Republicans admit they want obstruction

On Face the Nation, Speaker John Boehner was asked about his record of presiding over the least productive and least popular Congress in history. He responded by defending the obstructionist policies of far-right Republicans and said that Congress should be, "judged on how many laws we repeal." If you ever had any doubts, this confirms it — Republicans would rather obstruct than govern. The best way to stop them is to vote them out of office.   • People’s rights, not politics

    As Democrats, our agenda is full equality under the law for every American.

    Last night, I attended the DNC's annual LGBT Leadership Gala — and wow was it a great night!

    Not only did we have our fabulous First Lady, Jason Collins, Sara Bareilles, and Andy Cohen in attendance, we had hundreds of Democrats fired up and ready to fight for equality.

    There is no gay agenda or straight agenda. As Democrats, our only agenda is full equality under the law for every American. Because this issue isn't about politics, it’s about people's rights.

    For so many Americans, when the President signed the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, it was personal. When he put in place hospital visitation rights for LGBT couples, it meant the world to some couples. When his administration established and developed the first comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy, it was life-changing. And when his administration filed a brief with the Supreme Court urging them to strike down Proposition 8, he sent the message that we as Americans will not tolerate inequality.

    Of course there is more to do. But by coming together at events like last night's and supporting the President and Democrats in Congress, we can do it.

    It is an undeniable fact that after years of dogged determination by LGBT leaders, activists and grassroots supporters, the tide is turning in our favor. But we can’t turn back for a second.

    We need to support candidates who are working toward real equality.

  • Distinguished Republican Leaders Hit Back

    While the RNC and Republicans at every level are paying lip service to repairing their damaged brand, distinguished Republican Party leaders are calling BS on an effort that is all form and no substance — lashing out against the Tea Partiers like Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Ken Cuccinelli who have become the standard bearers for the GOP. Unfortunately, the only Republicans with the courage to stand up against the Tea Party and their anti-gay, anti-women and anti-middle class agenda are retired from public office.

    Here's what some of those distinguished Republicans have said about their own party in the last few days:

    Former Virginia Senator John Warner:
    "The strength of America’s political system rests in the strength of having two viable, strong parties in stiff competition. Today each person has to make up their own mind. I’m concerned about the relative competitive strength of the two parties."  [Richmond Times Dispatch,  5/26/13] 

    Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole: 
    “I think they ought to put a sign on the national committee doors that says ‘closed for repairs’ until New Year’s Day next year and spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas.” [Fox News,  5/26/13] 

    Former Senator Olympia Snowe:
    "I certainly do agree with the former majority leader, Bob Dole, with whom I worked when I first entered the Senate and who was a consensus builder and understood what was essential and important for the Republican Party brand -- what was important for America and that unfortunately has been lost today on Capitol Hill."

    "The Republican party is undergoing some, you know, significant and serious changes and they are going to have to rethink their approach as a political party and how they are going to regroup and become a governing majority party that appeals to a broader group of Americans than they do today. You have a whole new group of lawmakers that know no other environment than the current one of dysfunction and disharmony,” said Snowe. “And that’s troubling.” [MSNBC, 5/28/13]

    The RNC may have filed their post-mortem report on their failings from the 2012 election months ago, but it's clear that the GOP has a lot more soul searching to do before they're able to return from the wilderness. And for good reason —Republicans are out of touch with middle-class Americans on every important issue we face, from tax fairness to making college more affordable, to common-sense reforms to reduce gun violence.  But you don’t need to take our word for it — just listen the GOP’s distinguished former leaders.  Kind of says it all.

  • “Time for them to do their damn jobs”

    Our communications director, Brad Woodhouse, fired off this email to supporters today about how Republicans in Congress need to stop playing political games and do their jobs:

    Getting in President Obama's way has been the top priority for Republicans in Congress since day one. But now they've gone too far.

    They've been caught red-handed making up so-called 'scandals' out of thin air to stir up false rumors of vast 'cover-ups' happening in the White House.

    Did they find a single shred of evidence to back up their outrageous claims? No.

    But rather than let the truth stand in their way, Republicans actually doctored emails between administration officials about Benghazi. Then, they released them to the press, trying to pass them off as real in order to create their scandal. Fortunately, they got caught in the act when the White House released all of the actual emails.

    Tell President Obama you've got his back right now, no matter what Republicans come up with next.

    While Republican leaders were focused on stirring up controversy, Michele Bachmann was talking about impeaching President Obama for absolutely no reason, and Republicans in the House voted to repeal Obamacare -- for the 37th time.

    That's how they think they should be spending their time and your money.

    Make sure the President knows that you stand behind him and his agenda right now -- and that you won't let Republican games distract you from advocating for real change that will benefit all Americans.

  • Obamacare matters for kids like Zoe

    What I care about is keeping my child healthy — and that's what Obamacare makes possible.

    My daughter Zoe was born with a congenital heart defect that required her to have multiple open heart surgeries in the first few months of her life. By the time she was six months old, she had already reached over half of her lifetime health insurance cap, which would have left us unable to pay for the continuing care and future surgeries required for Zoe to survive.

    I can't tell you how relieved I was when Obamacare passed. I got a letter from our insurance company telling us that Zoe's lifetime cap had been removed. It meant my family wouldn't have to lose everything to keep my daughter alive.

    By re-electing Barack Obama, Americans sent the clear message that we want Obamacare.

    But for some reason, Republicans continue to fight against the will of the American people. Maybe it's because they'll do anything to stop the President from succeeding or maybe they want to keep giving insurance companies record profits. Either way, I don't care. What I care about is keeping my child healthy — and that's what Obamacare makes possible.

    My family, and hundreds of thousands of families like mine across the country, have been through so much. We deserve better than Republicans continuously fighting against a policy that's been voted on, upheld by the Supreme Court, and reaffirmed by the American people.

  • My Mom and the American Dream

    Over 40 years ago, my mom decided to do what so many moms had done before her. She decided to leave her home country so that her children could have a better life with more opportunity, better education, and freedom -- she decided to immigrate to the United States. As we celebrate Mother's Day this year, let's pause to think of immigrant moms like mine who would stop at nothing to give their kids a better life with more opportunity. Let's rededicate ourselves to finding commonsense solutions and support the President's plan to fix our broken immigration system.
