Republicans admit they want obstruction

On Face the Nation, Speaker John Boehner was asked about his record of presiding over the least productive and least popular Congress in history. He responded by defending the obstructionist policies of far-right Republicans and said that Congress should be, "judged on how many laws we repeal." If you ever had any doubts, this confirms it — Republicans would rather obstruct than govern. The best way to stop them is to vote them out of office. Watch this video and then donate so we have the resources it takes to defeat them at the polls.

  • Despite the tremendous impact of the Violence Against Women Act, the truth is that far too many women in this country still face the violent reality of domestic abuse and rape, and far too many die every day because of violence in their communities and their own homes. You hear about lots of superstitions on Friday the 13th, but black cats and broken mirrors aren't the only myths we've been hearing lately. Check out this graphic to see how some Republicans have been misleading Americans about what Obamacare will do.
  • Never Forget

Today, we pay tribute to the loved ones we lost, remember the bravery of our heroes and stand together once again, united for all.

Although September 11, 2001 is painful in our memory, the fabric of the American spirit continues to shine through. We remember the stories about acts of courage, of brave Americans putting their concern for others safety above their own, and commemorate the outpouring of compassion that flowed from every corner of our country. We honor the firefighters, police officers, medical professionals and first responders who ran into burning buildings to save the lives of their fellow Americans, even if it meant losing their own.

While we hold our loved ones closer, we will never forget how our nation came together at this time of great adversity to move forward. The One World Trade Center now stands tall above the New York City skyline and reminds us of our resilience and commitment to building a better tomorrow for our children. And as we face great challenges as a nation, let us come together again so we may build a stronger, safer and more perfect union.

  • Run with Cory Booker

Cory Booker sent the following email to supporters urging them to run with him for his upcoming U.S. Senate bid. The special election takes place on October 16th. Join the campaign today.

    Friend --

It's a fair question these days: why would someone want to go to Washington to serve in the Senate at all? My answer: some people run from big challenges -- I run toward them.

I'm running in the October special election to be New Jersey's next United States senator -- and in a sign of the times, my extreme opponent has turned his campaign into an attack on President Obama and his agenda.

Too many of America's leaders turn their backs on the big challenges we face as a nation: the kinds of challenges that could make the lives of our children harder than our own. People like my extreme, out-of-touch opponent are more concerned with sticking it to President Obama than sticking up for American families.

Run with me to help win this special October senate race and solve our toughest challenges together. Join my campaign today.

I understand the skepticism about politics today. I saw it when I took office as mayor of Newark, N.J. Some people said we couldn't create jobs or attract businesses. But today the city's population is growing for the first time in 60 years, and while Newark represents only three percent of the state's population, it's now home to one-third of all commercial and multi-family development. Families can see a better future for themselves here.

I believe that we can do better. I know that when you bring people together to focus on our problems, even the most difficult things become possible.

But my opponent promises to put his extreme ideology above all else. He calls Social Security a "Ponzi scheme" and wants to do away with Medicare. He would outlaw abortion even in cases of rape or incest. He advocates a "tax increase for the poor" while eliminating the corporate income tax. This is the type of divisive agenda that would undo decades of consensus and pull our nation backward.

I reject division and skepticism. And with your help, so will the people of New Jersey in this special election.

Our special election is coming up fast: October 16th. And these special elections are wildcards -- we've seen out-of-touch candidates get elected in these typically low-turnout contests.

We don't have any time to waste, and we can't risk losing this seat.

Tell me you'll run with me before the election next month:

The author Jim Rohn once said, "Your life does not get better by chance. It gets better by change."

I'm running because the truth I've lived in Newark is that people who care can find solutions to even the most difficult challenges.

    I hope you'll join me,

    Cory Booker

Today, 50 years after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and proclaimed his dream for an equal America, we recognize the courage and strength that the leaders of the civil rights movement endured. Following the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Democrats fought for the passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights act, taking the biggest steps for equal rights in generations. Today, Democrats reflect on the past and promise to continue to fight every day for equality and opportunity for all, to make sure that we do not forget the legacy of Dr. King and his fellow civil rights leaders.

  • Debbie Wasserman Schultz: “Four things you need to know”

In an email, Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz shared the Democrats' four-point strategy for winning elections in 2013, 2014 and beyond and encouraged supporters to get involved.

    Friend --

I just got back from the DNC summer meeting in Arizona, so I thought I'd let you in on our strategy for the upcoming year and beyond (because I'm really excited about it).

We have a four-pronged plan for the coming year:

Recruiting and training top talent. Our party is only as strong as the people in it. So we're going to focus on identifying great candidates for state and local offices, training organizers across the country, and helping talented young people from all backgrounds break into politics through our Hope Institute program.

Maintaining and building our digital edge. A big part of the reason we won last year is because our online program and tools were light years ahead of the Republicans. But that's the thing about cutting-edge technology -- it stops being cutting-edge pretty quickly. We're not going to rest on our laurels. We're going to work hard to maintain our edge while developing the next generation of tools.

Expanding access to the ballot box. Every single thing we do as a party centers on our most fundamental right as Americans -- the right to vote. You've seen Republicans across the country restrict that right by taking advantage of the recent Supreme Court decision to gut the Voting Rights Act. And we're going to be fighting back by launching a national voter protection program.

Holding Republicans accountable and promoting the Democratic agenda. You've heard Republicans talk a lot about how they're "rebranding" their party and agenda to be more inclusive after last year's election. But if you've been paying attention to the policies they're supporting, you've noticed that they've only gotten more extreme. We're going to make sure they don't get away with that bait-and-switch.

Many people are going to work very hard to make sure this plan succeeds, but I have to be straight with you: a main factor in its success or failure will be whether we have the resources to pull it off.

Chip in $10 or more today and make sure we can put our plan into motion:

    https://my.democrats.org/Our-Strategy

This is a winning plan -- and I can't wait to get to work on it with you, because we saw last year what we're capable of.

    Thanks,

    Debbie
