Under the Bush Administration, Republicans in the Justice Department have worked to systematically limit voting rights in rural communities through restrictive state voter ID laws, voter purging, and voter intimidation tactics that go against everything our country was founded on. Dear President Bush,

Republicans have repeatedly pushed for legislation requiring people to show IDs when they vote. Disguised under the language of “voter protection,” Republicans are really trying to suppress the vote of rural, minority Americans.

The fact is, some 4.5 million rural Americans lack the documents that Republicans want to require to vote -- twice as many urban voters. And 2 million African American voters don’t have birth certificates or passports. I stand against those who threaten to deprive citizens of their right to register, vote and have their vote counted.
