From the Arizona Republic:
The Senate Republican Policy Committee chaired by Rep. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., on Wednesday issued a report about why the U.S. government should not agree to recognize a "race-based government" of the nation's 400,000 Native Hawaiians in the same way it recognizes American Indians and Native Alaskans.

The Akaka Bill needs to be defeated but for a different set of reasons than the Repugnicans are opposing it for.
Please read up on Indigenous Hawaiian sovereignty and remember the injustice of the federal laws in place concerning Native Americans.
The Akaka Bill would be a sad step backward for the longstanding rights under International Law (regardless of this current worthless US administration) Indigenous Hawaiians have. BIG difference between 'federal recognition' and 'independence'.

thanks- remember, just because it's sponsored by a democrat doesn't always mean it's good.

That's not much of a critique, really. You go ahead and throw in your lot alongside those who compare the bill to Hitlerian racialism; they'll use you as best they can, then kick you to the curb. The international law angle, well that sure looks like a winner. And as unjust as the federal structure concerning Native Americans has often been--and it certainly has--go ask the tribes if they'd rather give up the trust relationship and duke it out directly with states, counties, and municipalities who resent them and want to take a few bites out of their asses. Good luck with your ideo-purity; sounds like you'll get a lot done.
