Tell President Bush: Get Osama Bin Laden Now
Posted by Jesse Berney on June 27, 2005 at 12:06 PMNearly four years after Osama bin Laden murdered almost 3,000 Americans in the September 11 attacks, President Bush has abandoned his promise to get the terrorist leader "dead or alive."
President Bush's hand-picked CIA chief Porter Goss told TIME that he has an "excellent idea" where to find bin Laden. So why isn't capturing him the Bush administration's top priority? Goss says that "international obligations" complicate matters, but what happened to the president who said countries were either "with us or against us" in the war on terror?
Why is bin Laden still free to send video messages to al Qaeda recruits and plan more attacks against American citizens?
Bush has let this murderer go free for far too long. If we know where he is, then it's time for bin Laden to feel the full brunt of America's military might.
It was all the way back on March 13, 2002 -- just six months after the attacks -- that Bush first told us he was no longer making Osama bin Laden a priority, saying, "I truly am not that concerned about him."
But the rest of America has never stopped being concerned about him. Instead, President Bush turned his attention to trumping up reasons to invade Iraq, a country that was not involved in 9/11, had no WMDs, and posed no imminent threat to the United States until Bush turned it into the world's most dangerous terrorist training camp.
It's time for President Bush to make capturing the man responsible for murdering 3,000 American citizens his top priority, Osama bin Laden has been free to plan more attacks for far too long.

Let me try again... I agree that fixing something that isnt broken is a waste of time and a brain drain. I enjoyed the general post daily blog... I could check in and catch the wave of information at any time. Sigh. I am so well just worn threadbear B******** about Osama. We should not of taken out hand out of the crackerjack box until we came out with the prize. Some life lessons are just lost on those that are protected by status, decree, philosopy or otherwise from life's truly simple pleasures. On a funny note, the internet "joke" about sending armed menopausal women after OSAMA is circulating again... it still has the ring of truth.

Hey folks--
We've read through your comments and we're working to fix things as they come up. We've got a list - much of it compiled from here - and you should see changes soon (I've already added a comment count to the top of this page). We'll be tweaking and building to help improve the small bugs we've found, but we hope you're happy so far.
A few notes:
1. We're aware of the account issues and are working on it. Sorry if you had to get a new account.
2. Yes, one name only. It's so people can't steal names. There are a few restrictions, but you can always change your nickname when you want.
3. No HTML in comments. We'll probably revisit this.
4. Comment count is now available at the top of the page.
Posted by Josh on June 27, 2005 at 02:18 PM

Here goes...
Moreover, 18 students representing Iraq's 18 governorates ended a sit-in at al-Firdous Square in the center of Baghdad, meant as a protest against the Government's decision to extend the presence of multinational forces. Shabar said that "the choice of al-Firdous Square for our sit-in came as a result of the refusal of the Government to let the sit-in be held in front of the Parliament building." Member of Parliament Falah Hassan Shneishel added that "a big rally will take place today at Kadhimiyya with the participation of tribes which came to Baghdad from all Iraqi governorates in support of the demand by the MPs to the Government to put a timetable for the withdrawal of occupation troops."

Honestly, we (or I) didn't even realize that they weren't on until people here mentioned it. It's a debate we'll have to have here. We just haven't had the discussion yet. We obviously understand what good they do, but they can be used for evil as well. We're going to have a series of meetings to discuss changes and edits, and that'll be on the list.

Didn't this happen in Vietnam?

"Insurgencies tend to go on five, six, eight, 10, 12 years," Rumsfeld said. "Coalition forces, foreign forces are not going to repress that insurgency. We're going to create an environment that the Iraqi people and the Iraqi security forces can win against that insurgency."
And what environment is that?? A f***in bubble? How about you and the coalition forces all join hands and make a big circle so none of the bad guys get in?
Or maybe you can like surround the entire country with rose bush's and then everytime one of those pesky foriegn fighters trying to get through, they get scratched and the more they get scratched, well, they will bleed to death, and bonus, they will bleed to death in Syria or Saudi.
Make sure you leave a path so our guys can get out? What, no path??

Posted by GregL on June 27, 2005 at 02:43 PM
I have a feeling that the first thread will wind up being the "open thread", people being what they are. I don't know if it was omitted by design, but I can pretty much guarantee a wandering off of the herd...

My dad was a WWII/CItadel graduate. I grew up hearing military stories. I dont doubt that there has been a suicide or an OD in our troops here or deployed. I would just treat gingerly unless I knew that the armed services was confirmining a number or a list of incidents.. Troop deployment, inappropriate recruitment and more are so incdindiary (is that spelled correctly) right now. We must study our history, we must talk to our WWII vets, they may be our only link to the answers we seek. My dad as gone to his reward, but I know that he said "war will never be the same again, the problem is that it will be more terrifying than ever before" how true....

Ronald Reagan was a decent actor who did well playing the part of the U.S. President during his first term while the same folks who are running the show now did so then. For most of his second term, it was obvious to me that he was suffering from Alzheimer's. Every time I said this, people would look at me like I was crazy but, oddly, he was hardly out of office when it was announced that this was so. Ronald Reagan should have stepped down from his second term, but those behind-the-scenes people found it more convenient to keep him in place. The poor man hardly knew what was going on. I said it then, I say it now, and I will say it forever.

An ammendment on flag burning? What happens if an Iraqi civilian burns a flag in protest of our occupation? Gitmo? Torture?
What happens if a US citizen in protest of this governments policies (Iraq for instance) decides to burn a flag? Like Vietnam. Talk about attention getting. Remember all the flags going up in flames during the anti war protest?
Imagine the fall out if a bunch of flags got burnt in protest of the Iraq occupation and it got global attention. Hmmmm.....now there's a novel concept.

GregL,
Give'm a few... right now the team are about as busy as a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest. It's really impressive what they managed to turn on all at once. I'm for sitting back a bit and watching the magic unfold.

Hey, guys, fill out the form at the "New Democrats.org" thread to give feedback and thoughts, too.
What do you think about maybe having a "DNC Members" community under the "people" button at the top, with an "open discussion" thread, plus the ability for members to start their own subject threads if they don't like the ones offerred to them and/or if there seem to be enough people interested in a particular subject - ie Downing Street - would also help please those folks who like the "bulletin board" format. What do you think?

why the box for the URL? Does it direct/link and I'm just not getting it?

Jessica, they are confirming the suicides, at least in late 2003:
Army probes soldier suicides
By Gregg Zoroya, USA TODAY
Alarmed by the number of suicides among soldiers in Iraq, the Army has asked a team of doctors to determine whether the stress of combat and long deployments is contributing to the deaths.
"The number of suicides has caused the Army to be concerned," said Lt. Col. Elspeth Cameron Ritchie, a psychiatrist at the Army's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. Ritchie is helping to investigate the suicides in Iraq. "

now bye
Posted by Dewey_the_Leftie on June 27, 2005 at 02:57 PM
Jessica - yes, so do I, but we are all talking about our opinions about the blog on this thread that is really about Osama bin Laden - if we just choose the top thread as the "conversation" thread always, this will cause confusion when a) a new "top" thread is created and people start conversing there, and b) we want to go into archives to remember what was said at a certain time and/or catch up to the current conversation. If we just clicked on the "people" button at the top, and there was a DNC Member line on the list, we could just click onto that and find the open forum, which would be just like this, but in our own little sectiony-thingy.
I really like this continuous stream of thought thing, too, but it needs a proper home, is all.

The Pentagon yesterday released additional details about a program to compile a database of personal information on U.S. students to help bolster recruitment, saying that 12 million names currently are on file and that collection efforts have been going on for some time.
David S. C. Chu, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, said the Pentagon's contract with a private marketing firm was simply an attempt to obtain the most accurate list possible of contact information for high school students ages 16 to 18 as well as all college students.
If this crap doesn't piss you off, then I don't know what will. Talk about devious and deceptive practices to get to our kids.
They don't even have the balls to use the word "draft"

OK... gathering information on 16 year olds is just smoke and mirrors. they have it... how stooopid do they think we are. FROM BIRTH you have to have a SS# and be listed on someones taxes, you can start earning and saving money anytime there after. You can open a retirment account and work 20 hours a week beginning at 14 1/2. All schools use SS#'s as the number or the cross reference for students. Now lets just suppose I am the all powerful USA government. I need an out side marketing firm to gather and or distill this information.. I doubt it. WHO ownes said marketing firm... whoes district is it in.... follow the money friends... this is a con of the highest order

International obligations??? Tell Porter Goss to start in Crawford, Texas. All paths to Osama start and end there.

Dewey - I worked at Children's Bureau for a summer - on C Street SW (if memory serves). I have an aunt and a former co-worker in the area if you need some orientation assistance, or help with house-hunting, etc. To be honest, I'm jealous, I loved D.C. even if I lived on an unconditioned 3rd floor in 1995 when the drought was so bad all those people died in Chicago - lost 15 pounds in 4 months just from sweating! But I just loved D.C. Got engaged under a willow tree at the southwest corner of the capital lawn that summer!!

I would be very surprised if Osama is ever apprehended. If he is taken alive, he will probably reveal much more the this administration would ever want known. They don't want to kill him because his family, who happen to be W's friends, would not be pleased and might stop the oil flow. It's good for the government to have a nebulous enemy. Hitler selected Jews, Poles and gays. Bush has selected Osama and other Muslims who are not Saudis. There must be an enemy to unite the people behind the cause.
