Former RNC Chair Thinks Rove Leak Worse Than Watergate
Posted by Josh McConaha on July 13, 2005 at 09:37 AMHunter over at DailyKos points out that former RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie thinks that the leaking of an undercover CIA operative's identity is more serious than Watergate.
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Don't you think it's more serious than Watergate, when you think about it?RNC CHAIRMAN ED GILLESPIE: I think if the allegation is true, to reveal the identity of an undercover CIA operative -- it's abhorrent, and it should be a crime, and it is a crime.
CHRIS MATTHEWS: It'd be worse than Watergate, wouldn't it?
GILLESPIE: It's -- Yeah, I suppose in terms of the real world implications of it. It's not just politics.
Well, at least he thought that way before he found out it was Rove. I'm willing to bet he's saying something else today.
But Gillespie was right -- this is isn't "just politics"...it's our national security. Of course, current RNC Chair Ken Mehlman thinks that leaking classified information for a partisan attack was exactly what Rove should have done, which just goes to show just how partisan they are.

Now the repubs are attempting to defend Karl Rove on two fronts. The first saying that he is the victim of partisanship. That's not even worth addressing. However, the second is essentially no harm no foul. He didn't know that Plame was an operative or she wasn't an operative at that time. I think what the Dems ought to be focusing on is a larger picture that has two aspects.
First, if you contradict the administration, you are viciously attacked as someone who is disgruntled. If we look at Paul O'Neill, Richard Clarke and place the Plame incident in that context, it becomes clear that there is a pattern in this White House of using the press to create an image of their being victims of sinister forces.
Second, the harm that has been done by these allegations and revelations is far greater than republican "operatives" suggest.
"Disgruntled" Richard Clarke's concerns about a domestic terrorist attack were ignored. as a result 3,030 people were killed and another 2,800 injured on September 11. They beat down on Clarke so badly that they escaped responsibility for inaction in the months before September 11.
CNN's most recent casualty list shows that there are 1,943 coalition dead of whom 1,755 are U.S. soldiers. How enthusiastic would the Congress have been to vote push war powers if Joe Wilson's visit to Niger had not been so viciously attacked? This does not even consider the thousands of innocent Iraqis who are now in the sites of terrorists because of the U.S. presence. Money certainly does not compare to lives but billions of dollars that could have been used here are now going into the Iraq war.
The Democrats need to frame the debate, to remind the public of the human magnitude of Rove's "unknowing revelation." Indeed Valerie Plame is safe and sound but the discrediting of Mr. Wilson's report led this country into a war that didn't need to be fought.

And how morally corrupt they are too. Instead of taking the high road, Ken Mehlman continues down the same evil path, over the cliff and into the sea.
Next year during the elections, all Republicans will be percieved as being guilty by association.
Keep on talking Ken, keep on leading your Party down the pathway to destruction.

Frameshop: Fancy Talk
As the scandal unfolds around the crimes committed by President Bush's closest advisers, it is important to remember three key points.
1 George W. Bush will never, never, never fire someone in his inner circle, let alone his closest advisers.
2 When the Bush White House is in trouble they are very, very, very good at leading the media off the real story with fancy talk.
3 Democrats always forget about point number one, which makes them easy prey for point number two.
Case and point: just a short while ago, a statement that was obviously written by the White House was issued through Ken Mehlman, the Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Here is what that statement says:
"It's disappointing that once again, so many Democrat leaders are taking their political cues from the far-left, MoveOn wing of the party. The bottom line is Karl Rove was discouraging a reporter from writing a false story based on a false premise and the Democrats are engaging in blatant partisan political attacks." (Go here to see the full statement)
What follows in "Mehlman's" statement (which was clearly given to him by the White House), is not a litany of angry comments about MoveOn.org, but a character assassination of Joe Wilson.
Now...why does this statement present such a problem for the Democrats?
Well, now that this statement has been issued by the White House, the media will start launching stories about the credibility of Joe Wilson. As I write this essay (4:00pm EST, July 12), the scandal of Karl Rove committing a crime is the top story in the news media. It took one week for it to get to the top of the pile. By this time next week, the media will have two stories: one about Karl Rove committing a crime, and the other about Joe Wilson trying to bring down the President. This will be a huge, huge distraction if it happens. Suddenly, the story about President Bush's White House breaking the law to prevent someone from speaking the truth about Iraq not being an immediate danger to the United States will be off the front pages. The story will give way to a standard "he-said-she-said" round of political bickering.
Democrats must not follow the media into this blind alley.
How to avoid this trap?
Here are six suggestions:
1. Argue Politics, Not Law: So far the GOP has thrown up a series of smokescreens to protect the Bush White House. All this fancy lawyer talk is designed to lure the media into the minutiae of legal discussion or into discussions about what the meaning of "is" is. This is a waste of time for everyone in America. The real issues here are political. Certainly we must be concerned about President Bush's advisers having committed a crime. But even if they did not technically do so, there is still a big, big problem.
2. Always Put the President at the Center of this Scandal: Ultimately, this scandal is not about one adviser to the President. The scandal is about President George W. Bush and how he misled the public into a brutal and useless war that has stolen the lives of good citizens, wasted billions of dollars, and made the world a more dangerous place. Always put the President at the center of the scandal. I would say it is no longer even useful to talk about Karl Rove. Instead, talk about "the President's closest adviser, the architect of every one of George W. Bush's political campaigns, and the person who got George W. Bush elected twice to the White House." It's about Bush. Make it that way by talking about the President.
3. Talk About Why This Scandal Is a Scandal: The larger issue in this debate is the War in Iraq. Because Joe Wilson spoke out against the War in Iraq, the President's closest adviser tried to destroy Wilson's and his wife's lives. It's that simple: you opposed us, now we will use the power of the Presidency to destroy you. Americans want to know if their President is using his power for personal gain or revenge, and that is what has been discovered here.
4. Keep The Story Moving Forward: Many Democrats get caught up in one aspect of the story. This is understandable since it is quite a scandal. Yesterday, the mainstream press caught the White House Press Secretary off guard as he repeated denial after denial. Today, Democrats should be moving it forward to a new topic. Ask a a few new questions: "What did the President know? What did the Vice President know? Why have we not heard from Vice President Dick Cheney since this story began? If the Vice President was so concerned that Joe Wilson was lying, why hasn't Dick Cheney filed a civil suit in court against Joe Wilson." If we follow this tack, then suddenly the media will be talking about it.
5. Keep Talking to and for the American People: This is not a scandal about who will be the first reporter to catch the Bush White House with its pants down. The real issue is helping the American people to understand how little President Bush respects them. The fact that President Bush has gone silent as a potential act of treason has been discovered in the Oval Office--this demonstrates how little the President cares about the American people. Remind them of this: "The American people want to know what is happening in our name? Americans everywhere want to know if the President tried to destroy the lives of anyone who opposed the invasion of Iraq? The American people want to know if their sons and daughters were sent to die in Iraq on the backs of lies?"
6. Connect the Dots: It is really important not to get lost in just one story. Remind people that there are dozens of stories of the Bush White House lying to the American people on the issue of Iraq. Connect the dots. It's not necessary to have a long theory about how these things all fit together. Just keep reminding the American people of all the instances where it has been discovered that the Bush White House was not being truthful.
Keep the story out there! Don't let the White House lead media--and the American people--off the real story with a bunch of fancy talk.
The American people deserve better.

Excerpt:
An interesting historical footnote on Rove and his sleazy tactics. Not only does Rove know this dance, but he and his partner have danced it before. A Nov. 9, 2003 Houston Chronicle article by Rick Casey reveals that Rove was fired from Pappy Bush's '92 re-election campaign. The reason: he leaked information intended to smear a political opponent (a fellow Republican) to a national columnist.
That columnist's name was Robert Novak.
It's not bad enough that Karl Rove endangered America. Bush continues to leave this high-risk, one-man sleeper cell positioned to do it again.
Posted by oncall on July 13, 2005 at 10:56 AM
I would certainly like to know when betraying one's country became acceptable behavior for anyone -- let alone the very ones who are charged with the security and safety of that nation and its citizens. Obviously, human life and suffering have little meaning to the Republicans. They have amply demonstrated that they don't care who suffers as long as they're not the ones doing the suffering.
By now, though, we see who is locking arms with those who obey the law and who locks arms with fellow criminals. The more tightly-locked the Republican leadership become, the easier it is to identify and eventually prosecute all those who blow-off the rule of law as "something for the little people to worry with".
Rove, Bush, Frist, DeLay, Cheney -- all those who have perverted legal interpretations to suit their lust for power and money need to be removed from office. The rubber-stamp enablers like Dole and Burr need to be incarcerated with their capos.
They operate as mafia; they should be prosecuted as mafiosi.

Amazing! Randi Rhodes yesterday suggested that the reason Bob Novak is not on the radar is because he may have already testified for the Special Prosecutor.
The way to keep the Reich off of making this a partisan issue is to make it a patriotic one. The entire network Ms. Plame had cultivated is useless and no longer a resourse for our national Security thanks to this leak. Her contacts and coworkers are forever compromised and their lives are in jeopardy.
There ought to be a fear factor here. While these sources indicated there were no weapons of mass destruction, they wcould also be used to determine what there was, or at least that was true before Ms. Plame's identity was revealed so carelessly.

The Republican House Whip characterized the Rove matter as just one of the day's complaints against this administration. I think we need to respond by recapping all of the past complaints, to illustrate a pattern of corruption and incompetence.
1. The Halliburton (Cheney's former boss) overcharges taxpayers for gasoline and military meals, by hundreds of millions of dollars.
2. Continued refusals by the Federal Regulatory Commission (FERC) to assist California during the energy crisis, when California first complained that Enron and other energy traders such as Enron were gaming the system.
3. Hiding from the Congress and American people the means to develop an energy policy that does not work, and resulted in the Enron California fiasco.
4. Its refusal to listen to FBI (John O'Neill), NSA (Richard Clark) and CIA (including Tenant's Memo that Al Queda to Strike in US) that predicted a 9/11 attack, including FBI anti-terrorist specialist John O'Neill, who according to Frontline, predicted Al Queda would hit the World Trade Center.
5. Failure of all security protocols that were to be followed during 9/11, including the stand down of the Air Force scramble once it was known the jets were hijacked, among other failures to predict the attack.
6. The willingness to leave Texas to sign the bill to keep Shaivo alive, contrary to the judicial determination of her will.
7. The lack of media coverage on most of these issues and challenges to WMDs and the War and other actions by this White House, due to media's fear of the administration's FCC who gives them favors or takes them away.
8. Erosion of our intelligence and the loss of qualified intelligence agents due to the arrogance of this administration.
9. Estate tax give away for the wealthiest 1% of the nation, people with mega wealth many of whom benefit solely by retaining their political power to game and undermine the fairness of our capitalist system and our democratic ways, taking needed funds away from State governments.
10. Consuming a federal surplus and running the nation into its worst deficit budgets ever, that continue to increase the national debt and that portion of each annual budget that must pay interest to service that debt.
11. Changes in environmental regulations that protect water and the environment to benefit big business and damage our health.
12. Squandering global sympathy and US support from 9/11 with the US now being a most hated and feared nation, with China being reported as more popular than the US.
13. The economy, with massive job losses and jobs leaving this country.
14. Administration pressures imposed upon Medicare officials not to disclose to Congress errors in budget figures that are off by almost $140 billion. The medical prescription program was a give away to the pharmaceutical industry.
15. The state of an economy that has lost its manufacturing capability rendering us vulnerable with China seeking to acquire our natural resources and Union Oil.

Why do you people keep declaring Valerie Plame as an undercover operative when that has yet to be proven? Furthermore, the law states that Mr. Rove has only committed a crime in the case that he knowingly revealed the name of a CIA operative that was actively undercover. Meaning, that she could be undercover and he not knowing that could safely reveal her name. You have no case, I suggest that you take a cue from your partners in crime and Moveon.

I just went to the GOP website where they're actually trying to say Karl Rove deserves an award. I attempted to post messages on their blog, but they immediately deleted my posts and prevented me from posting any further. That's insane! Does the DNC do that?
Posted by Burnham on July 13, 2005 at 12:14 PM
Chris, if Karl Rove honestly thought that she was not an undercover agent, why would he go to the lengths to explain that he never said her name? He obviously understands in his mind that revealing her identity was wrong.
Posted by Burnham on July 13, 2005 at 12:16 PM
John Gibson of Fox News says that Rove should get a medal for naming Mrs. Plame. Reason : Because she sent someone (her husband) who was against the war (Oh my gosh!) to try to discredit evidence that supported the war (Eek!).
It doesn't matter that the CIA later agreed with Wilson and said the president should never have been told about the whole Africa/Iraq business.

I'm certain that there is going to be at least one other big name to come out of this investigation. When we question "what is this administration going to do with Rove", we need to add "and anyone else who was involved in this potentially treasonous act". That way the story can stay focused on Rove while other names begin to be added. Otherwise, the stories will become separated.

Something to remember, the GOP and the Bush White House have been successful in changing the subject because we have strayed off subject with them.
When this happened, Howard Dean wasn’t our chairman. If we could choose anyone to lead our PR battle against the GOP forces of miss-information and propaganda, who could we choose better than Dean?
Posted by chriscoyle on July 13, 2005 at 01:55 PM
Democrats should use every tool they have to keep this issue front-and-center. Don't let go of this bone. Rove is a traitor, period (maybe not to the Republican party, but certainly to the United States.)

In addition, if Rove didn't think he was doing anything wrong, why would he tell Cooper it was "DOUBLE SECRET" background. As for Mehlman, someone needs to ask him what Democrat made Rove divulge the info to set him up for this "unjust" prosecution.

The silence and stonewalling is really making them all look guilty. People who I couldn't get to listen to me about this two years ago, now know what I'm talking about. And they want to know more. And the President won't give it to them.
All those involved have been identified by now and are being boxed in by the Special Prosecutor. I predict he will pick them off one by one, stretching it out over a long, grueling period.

if karl rove wasn't intentionally trying to out valerie plame or discredit joe wilson, then why didn't he tell matthew cooper the information "off the record"? he used the double super secret background because he wanted cooper to run with it, to detract from the news at hand.
even if what karl rove did isn't technically legal, he still lied about it when asked if he was involved, and mclellan either lied or was lied to about rove's involvement when he said that he had nothing to do with it.
if rove came clean about his conversation with cooper 2 years ago, it would have saved a ton of money, time and energy. the fact that he stood silent and let this go on shows that he only cares about advancing his agenda and cares nothing about integrity and national security.

JUST BREAKING:
Rove spoke to Novak before his article even came out, over 6 days before!
"
The article further revealed that Rove has told investigators that he learned from the columnist the name of Plame, not the other way around. After hearing from Novak about Plame, according to this source, Rove told the columnist: "I heard that, too." The Novak column appeared six days later.
The conversation with Novak took place three days before Rove chatted with Time magazine’s Matthew Cooper about the wife of former Ambassador Joseph Wilson.
Actually, as the Times noted, this account squares up pretty well with Novak’s own description, contained in a column of Oct. 1, 2003. Novak wrote then that a first inside official gave him the tip on Plame and a second source confirmed that. That second source was Rove, the Times says.
Asked by investigators how he knew enough to confirm Novak 's information was accurate, write Johnston and Stevenson, Rove said he had heard portions of the story about Plame helping to arrange her husband's trip to Africa from other journalists, but had not heard her name.
Rove has said he did not know the C.I.A. officer's name and did not leak it. The Times' source holds that Rove did not know that Plame was a covert officer.
Robert D. Luskin, Rove's lawyer, said Thursday, "Any pertinent information has been provided to the prosecutor." The Times said Novak declined to discuss the matter.
The Times added this description of its source: “The person who provided the information about Mr. Rove's conversation with Mr. Novak declined to be identified, citing requests by Mr. Fitzgerald that no one discuss the case. The person discussed the matter in the belief that Mr. Rove was truthful in saying he did not disclose Ms. Wilson's identity.”
The Times reporters observe: “The revelation of Mr. Rove's conversation with Mr. Novak raises a question the White House has never addressed: whether Mr. Rove ever described that conversation, or his conversation with Mr. Cooper, with the president.”"
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000979690
Rove openly lied and tried to spin the NY Times to print it! The lie is he got the name from Novak, when it shows him contradict the original writing....He confirmed for Novak that it was PLAME!
He knew her name, and flatout leaked the information to Matt Cooper and also confirmed it for Novak.....
So who was the other leaker, and how'd he tell Rove?
According to Jason Leopold and an official in the FBI, that source may be Lewis Libby who first started leaking the information everywhere.
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0507/S00227.htm
"In an exclusive interview Lewis Libby, the Vice President's Chief of Staff, told TIME: "The Vice President heard about the possibility of Iraq trying to acquire uranium from Niger in February 2002. As part of his regular intelligence briefing, the Vice President asked a question about the implication of the report. During the course of a year, the Vice President asked many such questions and the agency responded within a day or two saying that they had reporting suggesting the possibility of such a transaction. But the agency noted that the reporting lacked detail. The agency pointed out that Iraq already had 500 tons of uranium, portions of which came from Niger, according to the International Atomic Energy Administration (IAEA). The Vice President was unaware of the trip by Ambassador Wilson and didn't know about it until this year when it became public in the last month or so. ""
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,465270,00.html
"Two days later, two top White House officials disclosed Plame's identity to at least six Washington journalists, an administration official told The Post in an article published Sept. 28, 2003.
Those two officials were Karl Rove and Lewis Libby. "
If I were in that Jury hall, I'd be slapping down indictments on Rove and Libby for obstruction of justice and conspiracy! This meme needs to be repeated everywhere, ROVE KNEW HER NAME! So did the White House! LIES UPON LIES: HER NAME WAS KNOWN, AND THEY WERE LEAKING IT.
All of the CIA agents were NOCs, the crime is clear! Report it over and over again, Rove knew her name! He knew everything about the NOC operation Brewster Jennings, and openly lied about it!!!
Karl Rove flat out lied and he knew her name EVEN before talking to Cooper!!!!! The lynch-pin is unglued!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/15/AR2005071500036.html
The downing street minutes confirm, the intelligence & facts were fixed around the policy!! Get a special counsel in there and start indicting everyone in the coverup.

Do you have the e-mail address of those that said this is just another attack against the Administration? WE SHOULD WRITE THEM & GIVE OUR OPPENION OF SUCH A ROTTEN ATTITUDE? Keep a record and write them all!

Sorry I had something more to say! We know and have known for some time that the Republicans are intemidating and getting people fired, especially REPORTERS. It's hard to lose your career because of speaking truth? But that is what is happening. Remember the WhiteHouse Reporter that ask Bush an embarrassing question and then Bush never called on him again? Since Bush made him of no value to the Broadcasting Co. so they had to let him go? There are very few if any reporters with a family that will take that chance? So we have to do it through ads! And we need to write more elected officials blasting them for such behavior?

If we hadn't illegally invaded Iraq and spent $250 billion there, maybe enough could have been diverted to education so rightwingnut could learn how to spell and punctuate.

Snailboy:
9/11 could have been prevented if Clinton hadn't lied about Iraq's WMD, killed 500,000 Iraqi children while implementing sanctions in conjunction with those lies, and tripled the number of U.S. troops on the Arabian Peninsula to enforce those sanctions. Osama bin Laden in 1997 said he would send Clinton "messages with no words" in response to all of that, and he did in August 1998, October 2000, and, of course, 9/11. Don't you agree Clinton needs to be sanctioned in some way for causing 9/11?

I'm curious about something and maybe some of you can help me. You guys spend a lot of time talking bad about the opposing party, who likewise spends a lot of time talking bad about you. You guys talk about one party or the other being "in power". Could any of you clarify something for me? Do you not understand that both parties are in power? Democrats and Republicans control the country. All of the rest of us have little or no influence.
One party talks about how bad the other is, and frankly, I just don't get it. No party that I am aware of is not rife with hypocrisy. In fact, the very word "politics" suggests coruption, power, and greed in the minds of many many people. You're all bad. Your ideals are wrong and certainly the ways you try to achieve them are wrong, Democrats and Republicans alike.
There is a reason most people in this country don't vote. Did you guys know that was true? Check the numbers. On a federal level and often times on a state level, most people don't vote. Do know what that means? It means that no matter who wins an election, most people didn't vote for them. Do you know why that is? It's not because they are lazy, and it's not because they are apathetic. At least, not the majority of them. I understand that most of you will deny that, but how could you not? To admit that there is something fundamentally wrong with our system would put you guys out of influence. Most poeple, more often than not, who don't vote straight up refuse to. The reason? Because they have no faith in any of you, Republicans or Democrats. They do not trust you to have their best intrests in mind. They refuse to choose the lesser of two evils. In fact often times, there isn't a lesser evil. You are all awful.
So next time to you start spouting all of your "this is what's best for the country" catch phrases, keep in mind that you don't represent the country. Any of you. You only represent a small percentage of it, and it's getting smaller all the time.
I mean, why would anybody who has any real knowledge of how nations are born and die join a political party? What is wrong with you people?

The preceding could be largely avoided by thinking Americans voting for "quality" candidates. Is this even possible?
