Video: Time for President Bush to Keep His Word on Leak
President Bush told us that he wanted to know who was responsible for the leak of an undercover CIA operative's agenda. He said he'd fire anyone who was involved.
Will President Bush keep his word? Does he mean what he says? Watch our new video to see Bush's promise -- and take action.

Asking Bush to keep his word is like asking fish to breath air.
EXCELLENT, just EXCELLENT!!!
YOU GO, CHAIRMAN DEAN AND TEAM...with your PRO-active selves!!!! YES!!!
nice video; drives home the Bush=Dishonest frame.
Here's another frame--Rove's leak betrayed the CIA! Do we have any former CIA officials to call upon to speak up on behalf of undercover agents? Bush's refusal to fire Rove and Libby(and strip them of any or all security clearances that they may have) is a betrayal of trust to our TROOPS! (What's a current undercover agent supposed to think?) Let's ask Bush to place his loyalty to our troops, our security and our anti-terrorism mission ahead of his loyalty to his political fraternity.
It seems to me that we could use this to try to stay ABOVE the political fray--while continuing to show that Bush/Republicans are abusing their power solely to benefit renegade right-wing interests (which, after all, is the same frame that we're using on the judicial nominees/filibuster issuers)!
Hate to throw cold water on this effort, but I am now personally convinced that the source of the info about Wilson's wife was the fellow who can't remember names, who just happened to observe "oh, yeah, that guy, the one whose wife is at the CIA."
And his unthinking minions ran with it. Or maybe he even came up with the suggestion that "she probably put him up to it."
So, of course, the person who leaked the name is going to be hard to identify. There wasn't anybody who leaked it. There was just that well practiced pattern of going after a fellow's wife if you didn't like him.
Does that make it any better? Well, that depends. Who's going to be the first to tell where he "first heard it" and what is it going to take to make them spill the beans?
As my husband observed, the first guy didn't spill the beans; he just piled them on someone else's plate.
All the Republican talking heads on cable TV cackle on and on about how hard it is to prove a case against somebody, like Karl Rove, of breaking the law against outing a CIA covert agent.
We've been told about the tests: the Plame had to be a covert agent at the time, if so, then Rove had to know that Plame was a covert agent, Rove had to know the CIA was taking "affirmative measures" to hide the identity of Plame, and finally, Rove had to authorized to have this kind of classified information.
Lawrence O'Donnell is one reporter who has taken a look at the Court of Appeals opinions and thinks there is a good chance that, if not Rove, someone has achieved all four. He also notes that Rove, though not referred to as a "target" of the investigation is called a "subject", one step below target. Judith Miller's testimony may be what is needed to advance Karl to the top of the class.
It is buried in one of the handful of federal court opinions that have come down in the last year ordering Matt Cooper and Judy Miller to testify or go to jail.
In February, Circuit Judge David Tatel joined his colleagues’ order to Cooper and Miller despite his own, very lonely finding that indeed there is a federal privilege for reporters that can shield them from being compelled to testify to grand juries and give up sources. He based his finding on Rule 501 of the Federal Rules of Evidence, which authorizes federal courts to develop new privileges “in the light of reason and experience.” Tatel actually found that reason and experience “support recognition of a privilege for reporters’ confidential sources.” But Tatel still ordered Cooper and Miller to testify because he found that the privilege had to give way to “the gravity of the suspected crime.”
Judge Tatel’s opinion has eight blank pages in the middle of it where he discusses the secret information the prosecutor has supplied only to the judges to convince them that the testimony he is demanding is worth sending reporters to jail to get. The gravity of the suspected crime is presumably very well developed in those redacted pages. Later, Tatel refers to “[h]aving carefully scrutinized [the prosecutor’s] voluminous classified filings.”
Some of us have theorized that the prosecutor may have given up the leak case in favor of a perjury case, but Tatel still refers to it simply as a case “which involves the alleged exposure of a covert agent.” Tatel wrote a 41-page opinion in which he seemed eager to make new law -- a federal reporters’ shield law -- but in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to do it in this particular case. In his final paragraph, he says he “might have” let Cooper and Miller off the hook “[w]ere the leak at issue in this case less harmful to national security.”
Tatel’s colleagues are at least as impressed with the prosecutor’s secret filings as he is. One simply said “Special Counsel’s showing decides the case.”
All the judges who have seen the prosecutor’s secret evidence firmly believe he is pursuing a very serious crime, and they have done everything they can to help him get an indictment.
How about a video of Rove's greatest hits? He's said enough foul stuff in public to make most people believe he's turn on his country in a minute for the right political payoff. Keep the pressure on Rove and you'll keep the pressure on the President.
Monicasmith, we all know Cheney is the man they're after. It's his plate this is all going to end up on. No one's spilled the beans yet, but beans appear to be sprouting all over the place. No one wants to be tried for treason.
Dear Howard Dean,
What "standard of ethics" are you speaking of? I didn't think this administration had a "standard of ethics."
Bush is too scared to let Rove go. Mainly because he doesn't know how to talk to the public or HOW to talk for that matter. After a 1st term and one year into his 2nd, he doesn't want to fire Rove. That's not; right he needs to stick with his word and take action instead of standing around complaining. As each day goes by, Democrats especially get more and more upset with his actions. What he doesn't realize is that he's the most powerful man in America, and he has the whole world looking at him.
I'm not sure guys. Maybe we should wait until the investigation is done before we start saying that he is guilty.
I agree, if he did break the law, he should be fired. But after listening to the news, the Agent wasn't covert, so he didn't really break the law. And, he never actually said "I'll fire someone", he said : "if the person has violated the law, the person will be taken care of"
If they find that he broke the law, however, throw his butt in jail!
Of course laws were broken, but WE the Great American Public may NEVER know which ones, and by whom.
I'm hoping that we eventually get to see the evidence that the Special Prosecutor usedto convince those judges that the reporters should be compelled to speak. It must be one heckuva blemish on the ass of this administration to have that much firepower in the hands of the investigator that should never have had to commissioned in the first place, if they had 1) not been playing dirty tricks for revenge, and then 2) not played their tell lies so fast that no one can uncover the "truth" game, in order to try to cloud the issue. We can't lose sight of the seriousness of what is alleged to have happened. Furthermore, I have no idea how the the subject of such a serious criminal investigation can maintain access to classified info, until CLEARED of the allegations. Rove's access to all sensitive information should be suspended, until this investigation is over. Since he can't do his job without access, he should be suspended. With or without pay is up to W, but Rove should be suspended from his duties nonetheless. He is no better than the CIA officer he targeted (allegedly), and I know if a soldier or agent were suspected of such as serious lapse in judgement, access would be immediately suspended, until the investigation was completed. If convicted, part of his penalty should be forfeiture of all pay and allowances while under investigation.
Just so everyone understands what is sacrificed here for a decent Supreme Court nominee, the Republicans also intend to make military base closures in Hawaii, essentially surrendering our position in the Pacific, in order to be able to push this nominee through. Though they intend to re-fortify our military bases in California and Maine, we must understand that basically this White House is surrendering the memories of all of our faithful military and naval forces who fought the Great War in the Pacific. Since this essentially leaves Hawaii undefended and with China threatening a move upon Taiwan, it is uncertain what the future of the West Coast of the USA is. One almost feels as though this administration has ceded far too much, strategically, to the enemy that may be unrecoverable without a direct answer to the top Chinese military general's (and heir-apparent to the throne in the world's largest dictatorship) suggestion that wisdom, lying with China, of course, may be a happy consequence of nuclear weapon strikes against Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States.
So much for all that was fought for and lost in the Pacific...
I like that "political fraternity." Sounds like immature frat boy, which he is. Posted by hubert on July 19, 2005 at 02:07 PM
"Let's ask Bush to place his loyalty to our troops, our security and our anti-terrorism mission ahead of his loyalty to his political fraternity."
the point is...there was a cummulative effort by this administration to manipulate the reasons for going to war in iraq. wilson was taken out for daring to tell the general public in his op-ed piece that this administration got it wrong. americans have been far too forgiving (forgetful? not engaged?)of this 9/11 administration.
while the video is moving and i agree that anyone found illegally disseminating classified information should lose their job and be put on trial let's not forget some of our founding rights. we must not rush to convict.
in this country you are innocent until proven guilty. let the investigation conclude before we determine what course of action we should pursue.
Same as commented above - let the investigation continue... Innocent till proven guilty..
And if we kept Bill after all the lies - we can manage to get thru Karl Rove
What a bunch of morons some of you are.
Have any of you bothered to read the "Amici Curiae"? If you have not you can go to it with this link.
http://www.bakerlaw.com/files/tbl_s10News/FileUpload44/10159/Amici%20Brief%20032305%20(Final).PDF
It basically states that 36 major news organizations and reporters' groups argue that both Matt Cooper and Judith Miller should not be compelled to reveal the identities of their 'confidential' sources because NO CRIME HAS BEEN COMMITTED!!! Rove did not break the law. You might realize this if you came up for air now and then.
The Brief then goes on to say that the identity of V.P., the so called 'covert' agent, was not convert at all and the CIA had previously mentioned her name publicly.
What is egregious, is the MSM still trying to purport a bold face lie on one hand to the American Public and behind closed doors say just the opposite.
It is too bad that so many Dems are so blinded by their hatred they cannot see the forest for the trees. This is why you will continue to lose election after election; the American Public is not so blinded.
President Bush is true to his word...he said if anyone in his administration leaked information then he wants to know who leaked, that is it...he wants to know...if anyone committed a CRIME then he will fire them. He is staying true to his word because no crime has been committed. If you crazy liberals paid attention to anything other than helping terrorists then you would know this! How dumb can you libs get? REALLY????
We must not let Rove slide under the radar dealing with the new Nominee of the Supreme Court. Rove has a history of being very tricky - watch the movie Bush's Brain. However, as a liberal Democrat - he should be innocent until proven guilty. We must remain strong. Although we may have lost elections... we are not that much of a "Majority"... Regaining control of the presidency and senate should be our main focus in 2008.
As a member of a 12 step group, I know the power of a group conscience. Let's have faith that our "minority" will hear everything and make the right decisions for us. Also, why is Bush moving his jaw and gritting his teeth so much on t.v. He looks like he is on Cocaine.
Keep the faith. Let's not forget Democracy.
I am new to this site (posted last night)but have been disappointed by the generalities/personal opinions many contributors here have opted to share.
'too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.' -JFK.
a 'headlines only' mentality is what has allowed this administration to so successfully tell us what is good for us.
stretch yourself a little. dare yourself to learn more. attempt to view the whole picture within the context of an administration willing to exploit your collective fears.
last comment: those of you willing to compare clinton's affair w/ms. lewinsky in the same context as an administration (whose pre-election platform was to restore integrity and ethics to the white house) that has misled americans on foreign policy have not bothered to utilize your brains. you have been mesmerized. and used.
So. Are there any real Democrats who bother to post here, or is this whole place full of nothing but Republican plants?
Pretty disturbing stuff, if you ask me.
For the record, some of us are furious because we deserve to be. Bush stole the 2000 election; he took office in 2004 after disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of people, in Ohio and elsewhere; he now has the U.S. enmeshed in a war that's a thin cover for his garnering more millions of dollars in oil profits for his cadre of white guys; and down deep, you guys know how disgusting he is, and that you have to lay claim to him.
I'm damn glad I'm not a Republican. I don't think I'd be able to live with myself.
I'm not to sure about this Rove thing. Like everything else we try, this seems weak. Rove ain't going anywhere soon, at least not until the Special Investigator reports, then we'll see.
Did we give up on trying to get Delay?
So much corruption in so many places. NewbieDem, I believe treason in the White House aces DeLay's House of Bribes scandal. But, yes, have we gave up on DeLay? What's Pelosi doing as our point man on this?
My posts disappear, so I changed my name. Are they still disappearing?
Please read the new york times article, Spy's notes on aims were sheled, suit says. aug 1st pg a8.ITs seems there are more to bushs lies then we know.
