Kicking Ass: The Democratic Party's Blog

A Sheehan Update

Posted by Josh McConaha on August 16, 2005 at 12:26 PM

Just a couple of notes on Cindy Sheehan...

Last night, a man in a pick-up truck with a chain and pipe attached to the back of it mowed over a memorial to those who have died in Iraq. The memorial, made of white crosses, American flags and flowers, was erected by Cindy Sheehan and her supporters as they continue to wait for a meeting with the President outside his ranch in Texas. Fortunately, the man was caught, and police found pieces of the crosses in the undercarriage of his truck. (Crooks and Liars has a short video from this morning's Today show, and there are photos from the scene on this Kos diary.)

On a much lighter note, the Daily Show spent time on Sheehan last night, making light of the President's decision to "go on with his life" and take a nap instead of meeting with the grieving mother. They also go after those on the right trying to smear her, joking that, given the arguments from the right, Cindy Sheehan now wants to kill Kevin Bacon. (And on that note, Atrios points to a great debate that one conservative is having with herself that.) Again, Crooks and Liars has the video.

UPDATE: The Smoking Gun has a mugshot of Larry Northern, the man responsible for the destruction of the crosses.

Sheehan’s “Anti-War” encampment, now known as “Camp Casey,” outside of Crawford, Texas, near where Bush’s ranch is located, is literally driving the Neocons/Right Wing types crazy.

"Yes, my first born was murdered. Am I angry? Yes, he was killed for lies and for a PNAC Neo-Con agenda to benefit Israel. My son joined the army to protect America, not Israel."

Hitchens attributes this quote to Cindy Sheehan, saying it was sent to the editors of Nightline on March 15th. If you run it through Google, all you get are Hitchens and right-wing web sites like Free Republic.

Exactly where Hitchens got this from deserves further examination.

Do not want to use up too much space so you can read more comments here

Don't you just wonder if he is a Christian, tearing through a field of crosses in the Lord's name? Don't you just wonder if he supports the troops when he goes tearing through a memorial created in their memory to honor their lives and sacrifices? Don't you just wish we had a President who could be so magnanimous as to open his heart to a private exchange with Ms. Sheehan?

If it was my home, I would have invited her inside, no cameras, for some lemonade. Than, I would announce that there will be no other invitations for copy cats.

PS - The Anti-Peace protesters shouted "We don't care!" while the campers sang, "God Bless America." Don;t you just wonder if they have the "United We Stand" sticker on their cars? They can't even join in a prayer that God would bless America. Probably because if he DID, he would bring Peace. Now why does anyone believe that's wrong?

"The woman is unhinged and she's gone way over the edge of still being sane." This from Josh, of bluesite.com. Josh also calls Sheehan and her supporters outside WhiteHouse2 in Crawford "anti-American idiots."

I suppose if you son was killed in a needless war sold to the public with fake intel and resulting with a bunch of Islamic radicals taking charge, you might be a little unhinged. Is it unAmerican to say you expected better for your son?

There used to be a group of mothers dress in black who sat day after day in a courtyard in a South American capitol protesting the disappearance of their sons who had been taken into custody by their oppresive government. People called them crazy, too. The government finally fell after years of silent vigilance. People do notice. Cindy Sheehan is making a difference.

They can mow down the crosses, but they can't mow down the truth. Too many have died for nothing.

My earlier post referred to the Righties in Crawford shouting, "We don't care" while the Campers sang, "God Bless America" is pretty poignant. Let's here some Christians getting aghast at that!?!

I applaud Cindy for her efforts. Bush is afraid to speak with her. As a retired disabled veteran with twenty years in the military Bush is ignoring the plight of disabled veterans also. Each year over 500,000 disabled veterans have their disability deducted from their retirement pay on a monthly basis. Bush has a veto threat against concurrent receipt legislation since the year 2000. With the Bush anti veteran stance noted in congress with HR 303, it is hardly a surprise that Bush would be so blatant in his ignoring the valid issues that Cindy would like to speak with Bush about. Common courtesy is not a Bush trait. Cindy is a brave person to confront the Bush machine. Efforts by locals to fire a weapon or destroy a memorial to those who have died in this war are in line with the Bush way of thought. Our hearts go out to Cindy and the families of those who have lost love ones in this war. Keep up the effort. For now this is still the land of the free.

Cindy needs your help in Crawford!!

Cindy and the folks at Crawford need your help. We need the use of some type of van/camper/RV that can be used as a mini-office for the remainder of her stay here in Crawford. We need a place to get Cindy out of the sun, while she conducts phone interviews and other meetings.

The sun is taking it's toll on the protesters, with several people already suffering from sun poison.

If you have a vehicle that you can bring to Crawford (feel free to stay with us) - please call 707-365-7750!

Thanks for your help and your support.

GUN NUT! GUN NUT! GUN NUT! GUN NUT! GUN NUT! GUN NUT!

Hey, wanna have some fun at the NRA's expense? Play up the "Larry C. Northern, GUN NUT" angle.
Larry C. Northern = cross killer = GUN NUT = psychopath.
Me likely! A lot!

"A local gun nut, Larry Northern, angrily mowed down 500 crosses in his pickup truck..."

To see the gun nut in his natural redneck habitat:
1. http://www.wacoforsale.com/ltd/
2. Click "Hall of Fame."
3. See "The LTD Officers" photos. Apparently he isn't just a gun nut, but is/was a "president" of the gun nuts. Why, that's big-time "nut!"

So while were havin' some fun parading this hillbilly moron across the Net, let's do some serious ass-kickin' to the NRA while we're at it. An effortless -- and irresistable -- two-fer!!!

GUN NUT! GUN NUT! GUN NUT! GUN NUT! GUN NUT! GUN NUT!

w and his yahoos

w's on a 5-week (much needed for his life) vacation while our 100,000+ vacation in iraq enjoying the sites and sound of sand, heat, insurgents, and of lack of armor.

a yahoo shoots off a shut gun prepping for doves (aka as peace folks)

a yahoo drives his truck over crosses representing a memorial to our lost

and w's noble cause doesn't include his two but uses others, including trooper mom at camp mud who lost her casey to w's nobility

i'm perplexed, disgusted, and nauseated...time to take 5 (hours) and spend w/my family...only thing that makes sense right now...back later all.

A1st:

You are fine. It is the neo-con so called writers...such as David Horowitz who are losing it. They are really losing it.

Ron Reagan stopped Horowitz from ranting and verbally abusing Cindy Sheehan. Ron asked him if he lost a son in Iraq.

Then Horowitz actually said on MSNBC tonight that some of his near and dear friends have been killed by the Left.

His comments regarding the passing of Peter Jennings were "Jennings did considerable damage to the cause of civilization and human deceny."

Enough is enough!

This is hypocracy at its finest. I don't see any conservatives calling protesters camped in front of abortion clinics insane. And these people are supposedly "protecting" the lives of unborn kids that are not even theirs. These petulant pro-lifers don't know half the pain that Cindy and thousands of other parents have been put through. Cindy's son is dead and all she wants is answers, that sounds perfectly sane to me.

JalGravesy on August 17, 2005 at 02:16 PM

Bush is afraid to meet with her?! Do any of you guys remember her meeting with Bush last year in Washington and her very nice compliments of the president following the meeting?

How is it that she changed her story? And why has her own family come out against her? And why would one even pretend to think that any private citizen could get a 2nd meeting with a sitting president?

13
deerbob on August 17, 2005 at 03:33 PM

Cindy Sheehan says she was in a state of shock and grief then, and that she didn't know about Dalfour report, Senate intelligence committee report, the Downing street memos, or the 9/11 commission report. She's not in shock anymore, and has read all of them.

In addition the president assured her that their meeting would not be used politically, and then doing just what he said he wouldn't that caused Sheehan to confront him with her protest.

Of course, he can't do anything now. He could have stopped by her camp on Aug. 3 and this would have been over. But, since he has no concept of how to deal with the grief he causes, he must pay the price.

14
c_at_l_bob on August 17, 2005 at 07:14 PM

And I've come up with a Top Ten list that'll not only impress Letterman, but all the anti-war people out there.

"The Top 10 Reasons why Sheehan will keep fighting for justice and our troops."

I'll start with #10, and then if you guys wish, you can contribute.

#10. Bush refuses to meet with her, so Sheehan decides to camp out 24/7, whether or not she can sleep a wink.

I sent this note to the Anderson Cooper 360 during their hour on Cindy. I labelled it a positive comment, thus the first sentence.

Thank you for taking an hour to cover Cindy Sheehan and her protest. I think you and Bruce Mortensen, however, dismiss the numbers at "Camp Casey" unfairly. There were hundreds of thousands of protesters all over the United States prior to the war, and millions worldwide. We who protested then haven't changed our minds, in fact I'm more sure than ever that it was absolutely the wrong thing to do. Those 90 people at the camp are a potent symbol. People who will go thousands of miles and spend days and weeks protesting are a big deal. It’s a great deal more commitment than taking an afternoon to carry a sign in one's hometown.

What is it about some conservatives that they have to get destructively violent when they get politically angry?

Fifty years ago, they bombed a black church and killed civil rights activists.

More recently, they have bombed abortion clinics or shot the doctors.

And who can forget that "good ole 'murrican conservative" Timothy McVeigh, who killed 168 people in the Oklahoma City bombing?

Now we have this conservative clod who is so filled with anger and hate that he takes pleasure in destroying memorial crosses and American flags.

What is it about some conservatives that they can't stay rational when they are extremely angry or frustrated? Something compels them to inflict physical damage and/or pain and suffering on other people when they have reached their absolute limit of frustration. Liberals don't do this, but conservatives do. Why?

18
Mugwump on August 17, 2005 at 09:05 PM

We need the Democrats to stand behind Sheehan. It is about time to put pressure on Bush.

19
rebel on August 18, 2005 at 04:19 AM

I would like to know why the Democratic Party hasn't joined Sheehan in asking for what "noble cause" for which her son and 1800+ Americans have died in Iraq. With all due respect, it's a waste of time to go on simply criticizing Bush for failing to meet with her or to continue merely picking apart the right-wing attacks on her. The Party should affirmatively support Sheehan by demanding that Bush answer the question Sheehan has put to him: why are our soldiers dying in Iraq?

20
VTDem on August 18, 2005 at 10:51 AM

about driving the neocons crazy

(for a nice example see http://www.michnews.com/artman/publish/article_9083.shtml by J. Grant Swank, Jr)

When you try to debate a conservative, they want things said in a certain way, preferably like Rush Limbaugh would say it. And if you don't spout the "party-line" exactly the way they want it repeated, they will use a personal attack on you to shut you up and off. They will do this in person, face-to-face, if you question their beliefs, they will turn on you with an attack of your morals or sanity.

Surely the neocons are working Cindy Sheehan over and over again to bring her down. By time they are done, she will be given a code name or phrase. Something simple like "flip flopper" or if she were on their side something like "there is no crime." These little code words will be repeated over and over into the psyche of every American.

For example, "Sheehan surely is the poster girl for the arch-liberal look"

That is getting there, but they will narrow it down some more into something shorter and more clever and more evil-sounding or stupid, so that is easy to toss off with a casual flip that requires no thinking or debate.

Sad to sit here and watch helplessly and not be able to stop it for happening over and over. But as long as fellow Americans are so complacent that they let their thinking be done for them, preferring simple-minded phrases versus valid debate, there isn't much hope.

21
TheaG on August 18, 2005 at 12:52 PM

The Republicans saying that President Bush would have to meet with all the parents of the dead in Iraq if he met with Sheehan, is just a talking point. It is similar to an irresponsible employee blameing traffic on his lateness every day. Why do you think Bush won't allow anyone in his audence, when he is speaking, that is against him? All bullies will wilt when their bluff is called.

22
oneforall on August 18, 2005 at 08:41 PM

from the today show:

Lauer: what would you say to those people who were doubtful that morale can be that high here?"

Soldier: Well, sir, I tell you if I got my news from the newspapers also I'd be pretty depressed as well...and we are confident that if we're allowed to finish the job we started, we'll be very proud of it, and our country will be proud of us for doing it...soldiers will do anything when they know they have good leadership and they have the support from the people back at home, and as long as we continue to have confidence that we are supported and people have our back, there is nothing we cannot accomplish.

HEY DEMS, THANKS ALOT FOR YOUR LACK OF SUPPORT. JERKS

murray8144 on August 18, 2005 at 08:51 PM

MSNBC poll, Aug. 19, 2005:
"DO YOU AGREE WITH CINDY SHEEHAN?"

YES: 63%
NO: 33%
NOT SURE: 5%

So the nation stands behind Ms. Sheehan and her goals. Conservatives should feel free to print out the MSNBC poll, roll it up within the RNC's latest discredited talking points, liberally smear Vaseline over the paper roll, and then insert it in the same place that Rush Limbaugh's "pilonidal cyst" generously allowed him a pass on serving in Vietnam.

24
TC on August 19, 2005 at 05:42 PM

Hey murray8144,
how stupid can you be. The republicans lie about WMD’s and lie about Iraq being involved in 9/11 to convince the people of America that we need to send our children to invade Iraq. They do this for political reasons before an election to improve their chances. They send 2,000 American soldiers to die for this lie. This invasion is proven to have been a HUGE blunder. The Democrats pressure this corrupt republican administration to bring the troops home as soon as possible so less will die for this lie. The republicans seek to avoid the truth and to keep these troops there to die so the republicans can avoid having to admit they lied. The republicans mislead the young people in the military to keep them pumped up and want to keep them unaware of the true facts involved so the moral will stay high while they die. And you call Democrats jerks? Buy a clue since you obviously cannot find one on your own.
The troops need to understand that the Democrats do “have their backs”, support them whole-heartedly and want to bring them home alive as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the troops also need to understand that the republicans are using them as pawns for their political rhetoric just as you have done. Sadly, informing them of that fact will bring down their moral. But the truth is important. Everyone deserves the truth.
Luckily, as TC points out, most of the American people are catching on. Most are supporting Sheehan.

Hey Republicans, thanks for sending our young people to their deaths to advance your political agenda, stupid jerks.

I am so thankful for people like Sheehan? She is bringing the reality of War to peoples attention. Everyone goes on vacation, sleeps late and never thinks of the troops dodging bullits and bombs over there. This is the only war started by a President that didn't ask the people to sacrifice for the military to have armour, and all the medical care for wounded as well as death pay for families left without a bread winner. This President believes in letting the troops do without so we at home can have it all? What kind of person thinks like him? If GWB believes in God then he knows what God will do to him. I wish someone who knows him would ask him, why he doesn't believe the troops are a human being that have a soul that goes back to God when they die? And has he thought about what God thinks about his actions and attitude?

Bush don't meet with anyone except insiders who can keep everything quiet. The last thing any of our so called leaders will do is meet with a common citizen unless they can make some hay out of it. I don't think they have the courage to make Cindy leave the area but their way on all issues that can hurt them is to clam up and wait.
Guts is not something that George Bush has.

Not only that, he lacks dignity and authority (which are 2 things we ordinary people have learned from Donald Trump, that to be a good leader, you gotta have both those things).

If you want to be a good leader, you gotta lead with dignity AND authority (Something Hackett still has when it comes to fighting in Iraq, even though he lost the election last week).
