Republicans in Washington and Juneau are Failing Alaska's Students

As Alaska students prepare to head back to school, a new report by the Center for American Progress shows the impact of President Bush's and Governor Murkowski's failed leadership on education.

The comprehensive report measuring educational progress across the country found that Alaska ranks 45th among all states on its high school graduation rate and 50th among the 50 states in academic readiness for college.

Of entering Alaska high-school freshmen, only 27% are considered academically ready for college four years later, compared to 34% nationally, according to the report, "Education: The State We're In."

Only 44% of Alaska high-school graduates enroll in college the following fall, while the national average is 57%. Only 20% of Alaska college freshmen earn a bachelor's degree, while a little more than half of all US college freshmen do so.
