Hurricane Katrina

Democratic Mayors Ready to Help

Posted by Josh McConaha on September 3, 2005 at 11:35 AM

National Council of Democratic Mayors President Douglas Palmer sent this message to Democratic Mayors across the country yesterday, urging them to do whatever they can to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

My fellow Mayors,

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina our Mayoral colleagues and fellow citizens of this nation are struggling to make sense of this devastating tragedy and pick up the pieces of their lives. Trying times like these call for us to stand together and do whatever we can to help in the rescue, recovery and massive rehabilitation effort.

I'm writing to you with an urgent plea for you to immediately open up your cities and offer refuge and assistance to the affected citizens who have been left with nothing. As the first point of contact for our own communities, Mayors have the power to help like no one else can, particularly in the bordering and nearby states. There are so many things we can do:

Offer to send any available transportation services to the Gulf region to aid in the evacuation; Coordinate with your local religious and civic organizations to assess their capacity and ability to offer immediate services; Easily enroll displaced children in local schools; Work with your local motels and hotels to offer shelter.

The list goes on and on but we must move quickly to help as much as we possibly can. With so much happening right now my office would like to be a resource to you in your efforts to reach out and make a difference.

Please contact Jessica Briddle at 202-879-5599 jbriddle@deweysquare.com with any requests for information and offers of assistance.

Right now, weve got to help people with the basic necessities.

Sincerely Yours and Hoping We Can Make a Difference,

Mayor Douglas Palmer

Trenton, NJ

Now is the time for Democratic Leaders to show up and porove they can lad. I went on Sen Russ Feingold's website, and he doesn't even have a statement concerning Katrina. What's wrong with these people? This is not the Democratic Party I remember growing up. We need fighters. We need leaders. We need SOMEONE to speak to cameras, front and center. Someone to inspire. Someone to provide direction. Somebody to be a standard bearer for the Dems in this, our biggest national crisis in years! WHERE ARE THEY?? These people in NO are US!!

I used to wonder if they had spines. Now I wonder if they have hearts.

Where are the Christian TV Evangelist? They take in Billions of dollars each year, should they use a little of that to help the poor stranded people on the East Coast? We should have already removed them & put the sick & wounded in hospitals. No one should be dying by the second day? How can we allow them to be dying from neglect after five or six days? What about the Christian Coalition? Christian organizations should be the first to respond? The people will know they are phoneys by not advertising their first response and how much?

Nice to finally see proactive articles that try to make a real difference, instead of the normal All Bush-All-the-Time fare. One question, though. Of all the things to put in your top three captions, why this one? Surely, all mayors - DEM and GOP - already know this.

This #2 article on your site is an internal memo - from mayors - in the Democratic Party - to mayors - in the Democratic Party. Why give it such primary prominence even before their subsequent actions are witnessed?

If I was your political consultant, I would advise removing the article, at least until actual action is recorded. You are drawing attention to an issue better left masked over by actual action.

NO's DEM mayor failed his people. This issue, that your shining on spotlight on, could easily slide up the chain of command to the LA governor's office and perhaps even into a critique of the liberal approach to societal governance.

The good people in the Gulf (Red) states, who have never been represented in the Bush administration are in desperate need.
Our rhetoric says that "we" democrats care about this slice of America. We claim the our Party represents the poor, the unemployed, the working families that struggle to make ends meet. Now is the time to put our words into action. The Democratic Party needs to mobilize its own relief efforts and do more than put links to Red Cross's website on their web page. We need to be a visibly unified party and/or organization, working side-by-side with other relief organizations, but flying under our own banner. It is time to stop using words and start acting. I want to believe that our party really does care -- I need to see that the Democratic party will do more than use this as an opportunity to sling mud at Republicans. I want to see action. We need to be leaders and prove that, at this most critical hour, we can do more than throw angry, partisan insults at the establishment. We need to work for those that we claim to represent in the red states now, when they need us most. We need to show that we deserve the honor of their vote in 2008.

They can start by revoving Mr.Nagin as CEO of the city. This guy failed miserably in his job in evacuating his people, then had the nerve to try and blame the Gov. and President for not doing anything. When 9/11 happened you did not see Rudy getting on tv and crying about how the two George's needed to fix this problem because it wasnt his. He immediatly set up a command center and got on tv as much as he could to calm us down. He was a close as a politician can be to a hero as you could get. Churchill would have been proud of his role in calming not only us New Yorkers and Americans, but the whole free world.
Now fast forward 4 years to the greatest tragedy in American history. This clown fumbled the ball from the begining. He lost control before it became a problem, and all you ever see is him on tv passing of his failures to others. The failure of this situation belongs to local and state gov. officials, and noone else.

The second question, right after "Can you believe how incompetent BushCo is?" is "Where are the Democrats?"

The vacuum of crisis creates an opportunity for leadership. Yes, it is a good and necessary thing to donate to the Red Cross and to conserve gas. But it is a better thing to question why our nation has squandered our investments by letting the levees sink and FEMA become the toy of big donors. It is even better to stand up with outrage and ask why people are dying from lack of food and water in the United States of America. If you don't get the outrage, please read the open letter to Bush from the Times-Picayune:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2005/9/4/152433/0622

Hillary, Russ, Barack, whomever ... please carpe diem!

Even David Brooks says in today's New York Times that we are at a tipping point -- actually a bursting point -- for government in this country. If our leaders can't figure out how to do better than Bush, perhaps they could at least figure out how to be as good as Roosevelt. I'd like us to go for a progressive democratic future. Governor Dean, please join me! Wake up the Democrats!

***IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING KATRINA***
After surfing the net for hours and pilfering others' clever ideas for monikers, my DOG AND CAT have jointly issued the four decrees below. They've commanded me to proclaim these edicts to the human race via this blog. BY ORDER OF MY DOG AND CAT, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY AND UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, ALL BLOGGERS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING:

1. KATRINA, NEW ORLEANS, FEMA
The city of New Orleans shall hereby be referred to as LAKE GEORGE. With a nod to Herbert Hoover, all Katrina relocation centers shall be referred to as BUSHVILLES. FEMA chief Michael Brown, an underachieving Republican crony whose main pre-BushCo career accomplishment involved getting fired from the International Arabian Horse Association, shall hereby be known as (per the dog) MUSTANG MIKE, MISMASTER OF DISASTER or (per the cat) BRONCO BROWN, MISMASTER OF DISASTER.

2. CHENEY AND RICE
Dick "Heart Attack" Cheney, the cyborg who supported the gross underfunding of New Orlean's flood control efforts, and then refused to leave his Wyoming vacation once the deluge began, shall hereby be known as DICK BANS DIKE. In tribute to Condi Rice's thousand-dollar shoe buying spree in New York City during the peak of the crisis, she will hereby be known as IMELDA RICE, STILETTO QUEEN, or NO SHOES, NO SERVICE, at your discretion.

3. BUSHIES
Reflecting a failed presidency and his colossal dereliction of duty this past week, the act of reflexively defending George W. Bush shall hereby be referred to as BUSH FLUFFING. Those who engage in same shall be deemed BUSH FLUFFERS. Should Bush hallucinate about "mandates" or "political capital," these will be known as FLUFFY BUSH MOMENTS.

4. GOP AND TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH
Rather than focusing on Katrina relief, congressional Republicans will soon fixate on eliminating the Estate Tax, a levy paid only by the wealthiest 1% of estates last year. This GOP giveaway to the rich shall be referred to as THE PARIS HILTON TAX CUT.

I will promptly relay any forthcoming edicts issued by my pets. Failure to comply may result in your furniture being scratched or peed on. BUSH LIKES NICKNAMES, SO LET'S MAKE THESE STICK BY REPEATING THEM IN FUTURE POSTS! My dog and cat thank you.

Mayor DeStefano, New Haven, CT has pledged to take 100 families. If every good sized city across America pledged to take in 100 families, we would have beds aplenty. I hope other mayors are thinking seriously about this request. Though the current administration has failed miserably in its response to this tragedy, we as citizens need to each help ensure the best possible aid and recovery for those affected.

The sharks are circling. Please see my above comment and take real, high profile action. Call a mistake a mistake. You'll be surprised how much credability it will get you.

It is time for DEMS to roundly dissociate from the NO mayor and state governor. They will soon be as toxic as the NO water, and then it will just be another case of "where are the DEMs" on this issue, too?

Paging Sister Souljah. . .

I have to agree with Joan...where is the democratic leadership? I just read an AP report that Bush is going to lead the investigation of what went wrong. There were Republicans quoted throughout the article, where are the Democrats?! How can he investigate himself and his own administration?

I'm so disappointed -- I can't support and back the Republicans but there aren't any Democrats for me to stand behind.

Please someone make me proud to be a Democrat again, give me something...anything!!

If George can tell "Brownie" he is doing a good job, we should be able to back the Governor of Louisiana with pride as doing a great job. By not saying anything we validate the "where are the Democrats?" statement.
