Well the Christian Coalition is still not responding, shame, shame? None of the TV Evangelist are responding and I know all of them collect over a billion dollars a year? Why can't they help? They use intimidation and promise of wealth if you will contribute to them? God's Word doesn't condone that type of service. It is more of a harm to God's purpose than service for the good! True Christians know what I am talking about! Only those kind people that don't know the Word Of God are fooled by their deceiving ways? The True Christians would feel better if they would help with large contributions?
With the federal government stepping up to help the people (abiet too slowly), we need the American people to help support the thousands of animals effected by Hurricane Katrina. Please help by donating to the organizations listed above as well as www.bestfriends.org and www.lvma.org. The LVMA is seriously low on supplies for both the animals as well as the volunteers.
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated" Mahatma Gandhi
Christians are doing plenty - this Sunday 2nd Baptist in Houston raised $6 million in donations for Katrina relief. Let's stop pointing fingers and work together. We are all Americans.
Regarding the comments made by oneforall, perhaps we haven't heard about the TV evangelists donating, but the Christian community as a whole is very much involved. Churches across the country are opening their doors as shelters and are taking up special offerings to assist the victims. There are many religious groups involved in caring and providing for these people, including Friendships, Convoy of Hope and many others. On the other hand, the Red Cross is taking all the credit, but they're padding their pockets as well. Did you see the family that was moved to a motel by the Salvation Army and United Way because staying at the Astrodome would be too much risk for their child with an immune deficiency. When they called the Red Cross they were told they couldn't help them because they weren't at the Astrodome. (that story was on CNN) I think the Red Cross is an organization that seriously needs to be investigated regarding the money they collect and their current practices. Give to the religious organizations and others that actually provide for all that need it without retaining up to 50% for "administrative costs.
Just received Gov Dean's Katrina Relief email
Is there any reason why the DNC is not at least listing Governor Blanco's Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation???
http://www.katrina.louisiana.gov/donate.htm
Don't let it be said that the DEMOCRATIC PARTY ignored Louisiana too!
Most of the money donated for hurricane relief goes to large national groups. There are, however, many smaller local organizations that are very worthy of support. I am President of Centro Campesino Farmworker Center a Community Development Corporation (CDC) in Miami-Dade County, Florida. My experience is that the local groups carry the burden of advocating for the poor who often are not well served by government or big organizations. They also continue the work of recovery after the big groups leave. My organization is still doing repair and construction work for the 2004 rural hurricane victims.
Southern Mutual Help Association, Inc. is a CDC in Louisiana that has done great work for 36 years. Their Executive Director won a MacArthur Genius Award. They desperately need funds. Democrats should help the little guys. Go to www.southernmutualhelp.org and donate with a credit card.
Chabad Hassidic movement organizing non-sectarian aid to Hurricane Katrina victims (and see aid links below):
Chabad Telethon to Aid Hurricane Relief Efforts
LOS ANGELES, CA, SEPTEMBER 5—Rabbi Boruch Shlomo Cunin, Director of West Coast Chabad-Lubavitch, announced today that Chabad will urge donors during its upcoming “Celebration 25” Telethon to add to their usual contributions in order to support Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The California-based organization has joined as a full partner in a broad relief program undertaken by Chabad-Lubavitch of Louisiana, and is providing vital financial, material, and logistical aid to those in need.
“It’s impossible to see the images of destruction and loss coming from the Gulf Coast and not be moved to action,” said Rabbi Cunin. “Our hearts go out to the hundreds of thousands who are suffering from this disaster, and we will continue to do everything we can to help the survivors. On September 25, we will ask our generous Telethon donors to contribute an extra amount during this emergency that they can earmark for hurricane relief. Chabad has a long, proud tradition of nonsectarian crisis intervention, and now is the time for all of us to step forward,” said Rabbi Cunin.
“West Coast Chabad-Lubavitch has assumed a critical role in our life-saving hurricane relief efforts,” said Rabbi Zelig Rivkin, Director of Chabad-Lubavitch of Louisiana. “They are providing immediate assistance that allows us to react quickly to the crisis, and have partnered with us in every way during this difficult time. We are grateful that the Chabad Telethon will urge donors to add to their usual contributions to support our efforts.”
“This is a time of great need for all of us along the Gulf Coast,” added Rabbi Rivkin. “Our network of emergency centers in the disaster area is working around the clock to assist survivors of this terrible storm. We hope that Telethon viewers--in addition to supporting Chabad’s ongoing, vital programs that rely on their donations--will use this opportunity to extend a helping hand for our relief efforts.”
Chabad’s Telethon is an annual fundraising event that supports the largest network of educational and nonsectarian social services under Jewish auspices in America. Over the last 25 years, the Telethon has hosted appearances by such leading entertainment industry figures as Jon Voight, Magic Johnson, Martin Sheen, Bob Dylan, Matt LeBlanc, Tony Danza, Whoopi Goldberg, Drea de Matteo, and Jerry Weintraub. The special Chabad “Celebration 25” Telethon will broadcast live from Hollywood on September 25th, from 3 pm to Midnight, PST. It will also be simulcast around the globe via the Internet at www.tolife.com.
More than a dozen Chabad centers across the Gulf Coast and the South have been converted into emergency relief stations to provide shelter, food, clothing and accommodations to displaced families. Chabad of Louisiana has been involved in evacuation efforts, and has provided counseling, referrals to other agencies, and networking for those in search of loved ones. The organization is also helping place children in Chabad schools -- with tuition waived -- and is finding temporary housing for many families. Additionally, they are using their network of community and business contacts to find new employment for displaced persons.
“West Coast Chabad-Lubavitch will stand with our Gulf Coast representatives in the days and months ahead as we work to help the hurricane survivors rebuild their lives,” said Rabbi Cunin. “Our centers here on the West Coast will open their doors to refugees with relatives in the area -- In fact, the first groups have already arrived. We will reach out in every way possible to offer a new beginning for those affected by this tragedy.”
“The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, taught us the special power contained within each good deed,” added Rabbi Cunin, “And after this devastating storm, we will need as many good deeds as possible.”

I was so pleased to see animal rescue groups on the above list of groups needing donations. I've been so frustrated by the additional horrors that evacuees were subjected to by the rescue teams. Those with pets were forced by the rescuers to make a "Sophie's Choice;" they were given the choice to abandon their pets in order to get on the rescue vehicle, or to refuse rescue and keep their pets. This includes a blind woman who was prevented from taking her guide dog. I can't imagine the guilt and grief these people were subjected to on top of losing everything else. What a price to pay for rescue, and what extra effort and cost for animal groups to have to go back in and search for the animals afterward.
Kudos to the Democratic Party for recognizing these animal rescue groups on your donation list!
It never ceases to amaze me the Lutheran Disaster Response (www.elca.org) is omitted from lists like this. Not only do Lutherans support most Democratic positions, but 100% of all monies donated go to the disaster earmarked by the giver. We pay for our own administrative costs, thank you, and want to make sure that money goes where folks want it to go. I know that some of the organizations listed cannot say the same because I have worked with them.
I suspect that all the mainline church groups have some type of Disaster Organization that is in operation. In the Evangelical LUTHERAN Church in America (ELCA)is one for Domestic Disasters, that had worked in New York and is still working with last year's hurricane victims.
The Texas-Lousiana Synod of the ELCA reports: In addition to giving through ELCA Domestic Disaster Response, you can help in raising the $1,000,000 needed per week to pay for the cost of feeding the people who have been moved from the Superdome to the Astrodome. Bishop Blom has said that the interfaith community is organizing a plan to feed these displaced persons. He writes, "Four groups were set up--one for each week of this month. We are assigned to work with the Episcopalians and others to handle the last week (Sept. 28- Oct.4)."

I am very vocal and opinionated in my politics. I often sway to the side of democrats over republicans as the party of the working man, the part with a heart, the party that cares. Well today that has changed a bit.
I received a call tonight from the democratic party wanting money for fund raising. ( Nancy Poloski asked to call me ). I listened for several seconds and heard the words : the democractic party needs your financial assistance at this time. 100 dollars to address the potential loss of the supreme court etc.
At this point I stated that I have given money on many occasions in the past but at this time I felt that we as democrats should have a larger vision to help those among us that need it, and that I would give 100, 200 for the victims in New Orleans rather than to those seeking a political agenda. At that point the person on the phone said, that was admirable of me, said thank you and hung up.
I was offering that we as democrats, the party of the people dismiss the poltical fund raising and give the money to those in NO. but alas we are just like the rest.
If the democrats are to gain anything its in helping people; its not in being republican lite. This is the moment when they can demonstrate what it means to be liberal, compassionate etc democrats are not looking out for the next election, but in the final analysis; if they are willing to give up the prize its is than that they can win it.
Stop the party fund raising and send the money to those that need it.
this is just as bad maybe worse than the republicans on monday after the storm asking for contributions and support to eliminate the estate tax.
We are better than this people .. lets start showing it.
The Veterans For Peace Road Trip crew headed directly into Covington Louisiana and have been on scene scince last Friday providing food, shelter, electricity and now communications.
You may remember them from Camp Casey this summer. They are the guys that walked in the ditch to President Bush's house arm and arm with Cindy Sheehan.
IF you'd like to donate to a real liberal relief organization please consider donating to the VFPRoadTrips crew.
I think it a good thing that people are listing other relief organizations that people can donate to, but I don't think it's necessary to be so critical of the original poster that your orgization was not listed. He clearly states "below are just a few". I'm glad that we're being told about other charities, some of them I'm familar with and some I'm not, so thank you.
The official relief agency of the Episcopal Church USA is
Episcopal Relief and Development.
Their website is:
http://www.er-d.org/erd.htm
WWOZ, the wonderful jazz and heritage radio station in New Orleans, was forced off the air by Hurricane Katrina. But like the people in Louisiana, the body may be bruised but the spirit is not broken.
“WWOZ in Exile” is now broadcasting on streaming audio through the studio of WFMU in Hoboken, New Jersey. The website http://www.wwoz.org/ has info on how to connect to the station on the internet, and news on how musicians from New Orleans are surviving the aftermath.
In all fairness, Pat Robertson's organization is participating in hurricane relief. Democratic and Progressive organizations are understandably reluctant to recommend his group. I think it's appropriate for our organizations not to recommend his organization, but he actually does appear to be doing something at this time.
I gave to the Episcopal Relief and Development on Sunday in church. However, I want to send clothes and most places are only taking money and water. They indicated that they were collecting at Lincoln Center but only gave one day's notice and had to be there tonight (Tues). Is anyone else colleting clothes?--especially in Brooklyn. Thanks
Beyond the incredibly inept handling of Katrina --which I think clearly demonstrates Bush's lack of concern for ordinary people (unless it's a photo-op!) and his customary understanding of the world through cliches: the situation in New Orleans gives us the opportunity to address the under class in the US. Who couldn't evacuate? Why? In your community (my community), who would be left behind? What kind of country are we if 1/3 + people are, seemingly, expendable? What am I doing in my community. Let's not lose the opportunity to raise this wider issue.
Have you noticed the big disasters that have befallen the U.S. since Bush took office. Just as a reminder there was the (1) electricity debacle in California that ended causing the state to be $20 million + in debt with a lot of local and personal anguish and lost hopes, (2) 9/11, (3) the overthrow of the government of Iraq and the resulting quagmire, and (4) Katrina, which was bad enough as a disaster but turned into a calamity because of the levee breaks and subsequent flooding.
Now consider that all of these disasters have a common component - George Bush failed to do something well within his power that would have contributed to lessening or even perhaps preventing the disaster or the severity of the disaster. He could have stopped the price gouging in California and did nothing, he did nothing to prevent 9/11 like pay attention to security briefing headlines, he actually did something to start the Iraq war but did so under false pretenses (by lying, if you are a little dense) and made sure there was not enough money to finish/re-inforce the levees to protect New Orleans.
The religious right is ready and willing to blame all of this on our sinful ways (abortions, gay marriages, etc) and God is trying to get us to change our ways. I think they got it all wrong, just as George gets it wrong most of the time. Perhaps God is trying to get us to change our ways but perhaps it is because we insist on electing "fake Christians" to lead us. Perhaps God is tired of being "used" to promote a political agenda.
Just saw on TV and interview at the Astrodome with two clergy (one black and young, the other white and older) who were members of a faith group made up of what sounded like all religions, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, etc., assisting in the relief effort as a united group. Now that's the silver lining to this dreadful cloud. The country is uniting!
I'm frustrated by the actions of Democratic members in Congress. They need to stop rubber stamping the policies of this administration and start speaking out. I realize it is hard to get the bullhorn when you are the minority but Newt Gingrich & Co found a way. To the Rs, bipartisanship is only called for when they are in trouble. Let this failure of the feds to respond to the Katrina disaster be a warning that those who don't speak out against the malfeasance of this administration bear some of the responsibility for the tragic results.
Another great organization you can donate to is LCMS World Relief at http://www.lcms.org/pages/internal.asp?NavID=8651.
Also, Thrivent Financial members can get a gift match of their donation they make to one of four eligible organizations, supplemented $1 for every $2 given, up to $300 per member (e.g., if a member gives $600 to a relief organization, Thrivent Financial will provide that organization with an additional $300.) A Thrivent Financial Hurricane Katrina Individual Member Response Form must accompany the member’s gift (see http://www.thrivent.com/fraternal/katrina.html for form and instructions).
All funds raised and contributed through the Individual Member Response will be directed to four eligible recipients: Lutheran Disaster Response, ELCA Domestic Disaster Response, LCMS World Relief/Human Care and WELS Committee on Relief. These organizations will distribute the funds to those in need using their established processes.

I was watching the Daily Show last night and saw the comment Barbara Bush made regarding the victims of Hurricane Katrina. To paraphrase, she said the people relocated to Houston never had it so good since they were so poor anyway. Why has this not been blasted on the mainstream media? Her comments are indicative of the insensitivity of the Bush Family. They are a national disgrace. They make me ashamed to be an American
I have just heard that due to the disaster on the Gulf coast, heating oil is expected to be up to 70% more expensive thruout the country this winter! When will these oil companies stop gouging the American public and exhibit SOME civic responsibility other than profiteering! Who are these people? Who do they think they are? Are these people not human; don't they suffer and die like the rest of us? Are they incapable of compassion or shame? Is the need for profit to be the only value left in this "new world order" and everyone and everything else be damned?!
In a time of such pressing national crisis to simply allow the price of this essential commodity to "float" to whatever speculative level suits the profit margins is unconscionable! I can see why Thomas Jefferson was so opposed to allowing "corporations" to be formed in the United States. They are soulless entities with only one reason for existence: Profit, profit and more profit and these oil companies are the WORST! They have America in their grip now and they are sqeezing and squeezing and squeezing without a care for the damage to other businesses, the economy, the country and the American people. Truly the oil cartel is a pox upon us! By promising a new world of technology and comfort and leading us away from our roots they have bought America and our constitution in exchange for our enslavement!
I'd like to add another church-based charity to this, the Unitarian Universalist Association and UU Service Committee's fund:
http://www.uua.org/news/2005/050831_katrina/donate.html
They're doing good work, like many other congregations.
I am happy to hear a lot of the real fears that our nation should have considered are about to be brought into consciousness and very saddened that it had to happen in this way. I hope the party can take the lead in a vocal solution-making capacity. Our biggest criticism is not the lack of compassion, but the lack of cohesion. The flood of energy and purpose must be maintained with vision and that essence so lacking from the government today: IMAGINATION. Keep creating solutions, opportunities, looking toward tomorrow and the day after tomorrow and our voice of reason, spoken clearly and intellegently may have a chance to rise above the din of chaos and fear - the tools of the opposition.
I AM FEARFUL FOR OUR COUNTRY
It is great to hear about all the organizations that are helping the evacuees. I truly feel so sad for these people. I do not understand how such a tragedy fell upon our nation. How our government let this happen...I will never understand. This has changed our country forever...in so many ways.
I am an Arkansas resident. We have taken on 59,000 in our state. Fort Chaffee was opened for the evacuees. I live very close to there and I found myself getting nervous about it. Did you know 70% of New Orleans is HIV+. 3 out of 5 evacuees being processed are HIV+. This is New Orleans way of life. This made me scared for all the communities taking in the evacuees. I believe it will spread through the US. Please take precautions. After a few circumstances took place, our Governor ordered them out of Fort Chaffee. There was a riot, some breaking and entering, and rape at the fort. Buses that brought people in were filthy with used condoms and syringes. This is to be expected becauses as we are rescueing the good, we also rescueing the bad. The bad are ruining for all the good people. The evacuees told stories of rape of children and women. They specifically said the rapist are hear with us. Think about this, the money and items I have donated are helping house and feed these rapist. I can not comprehend americans doing this to other americans at a time like this or how "we" have let this happen. Let's just stay focused on these poor innocent children and the good people whom are so very grateful. I have been lucky enough to witness the gratitude and the strength of these people. May God be with them all and keep them safe. God bless the USA.
One more fine charity is Planned Parenthood. They have had many operations flooded and have lost medical resources. They are now trying to make birth control and emergency contraception available to the evacuees. Help or learn more at www.plannedparenthood.org
MAMA BUSH
Now that we've heard Barbara Bush's ugly assessment of the victims coming to Texas it's pretty clear where Boy Blunder gets his insipid hauteur. Just look at mama.
I'm not going to get into a political discussion at this time but I do have aquestion I hope someone can answer:
Is there a need for drivers in the TN area? I am disabled and can't do a whole lot more than drive so I would be willing to help out in that way if I am needed.
I keep hearing (and reading) of how many blunders the federal (national) government made in the Katrina disaster. Howard Dean just emailed me (personally?) to let me know that this failure of national government will be called to question soon. I would like some other questions answered as well. Why didn't the mayor of N.O. execute the evacuation plan for the city that was to be executed in event of a category 3(+) hurricane? Why didn't he use the city buses, the school buses, to evacuate the masses who had no other means? Why didn't the governor of Louisiana send in troops under her command to get the people out of the way of disaster? Who failed here? Last I checked, the local government is responsible first and foremost, then the state. Then, it is the responsibility of those entities to call upon the federal government and authorize it to act in their (state and city) territory.
The national government, however, must face its share of the blame and account for its failures. The national government has failed to insist that people take responsibility for their own actions/inactions by promoting a "savior government" who will take care of every person's needs. The national government has failed by always bailing individuals out of every problem they face (granted, these problems are not necessarily of their own making). The national government has failed by not holding the front lines of authority and responsibility accountable in the past, so that now our first response to disaster is "What is the President doing about it?"
All our problems cannot be blamed on our national government. All our solutions cannot be expected to come from our national government. For everyone who complains about "passing the buck", what did you do to prevent this tragedy? Then ask what did the front lines do? The last entity that is to come to aid is the national government!
As US citizens, we are very concerned about the lack of accountability this administration has regarding the devastation that has recently occurred in New Orleans. It is very disheartening that the loss of life and hope in New Orleans has not made any impact on the political game that this administration likes to play. The American People deserve to know why the planning and rescue of the hurricane survivors was not made a priority. Human life is not to be used as a political pawn. People have died and are dying everyday because of the incompetence and lack of caring this administration has shown during this time of dire straits.
We must stand together and work to replace the incompetence that we unfortunately have endured in the past weeks. As OUR elected official, we call on you to help in this effort.
I think it's time to clear things up about where the responsibility lies for the mess after the latest hurricane. It's not with the President, it's not with FEMA, and it's not with the Republican party. The state government of Louisiana and the city government of New Orleans are solely responsible for the atrocious handling of that disaster. A few questions.
What party has been in firm control of the Louisiana state government for decades? DEMOCRATIC.
What party spent MILLIONS OF DOLLARS allocated by the Federal Gov't for the New Orleans levy system on preparations for Mardi Gras? That would be the DEMOCRATIC party, right?
What administration has spent more in five years than the Clinton administration did in eight years on the New Orleans levy system? That would be the Bush administration.
What party has been in firm control of the New Orleans city government for decades? DEMOCRATIC.
What is the party affiliation of the Governor of New Orleans? (The same Governor who refused to allow the National Guard troops who were standing ready with literally tons of food and water for the people stranded at the New Orleans Super Dome to give them any because "We don't want people congregating around there?") I believe she's a DEMOCRAT.
Who's the uneducated idiot who let hundreds of New Orleans school buses sit unused and eventually become submerged in feet of water instead of using them for evacuations because "The seats in school buses aren't comfortable enough, we need to get us some Greyhound buses down here?" That particular idiot is, of course, a Democrat.
What administration has spent more in five years than the Clinton administration did in eight years on the New Orleans levy system? That would be the Bush administration.
Maybe if any democrat had half a brain, he or she could set you people on a decent path some real, intelligent discussion that could lead to your enlightenment. However, that particular scenario is quite unlikely to ever take shape. The brainless democrats running Louisiana and New Orleans are to blame for this astounding tragedy. Republicans know it, Democrats know it, Independents know it; in short, everyone knows it. It's as obvious as the democratic party's ineptitude. I disagree with the President on many issues, but this constant and unwarrented attacking has gone quite far enough. How about you lib's get a party platform together that consists of something more than kick Bush, kick Bush, kill babies, kick Bush, kick Bush, kill babies, huh? Then maybe you'll have some legitimacy to criticize. But until you do, just shut your mouths, alright, and quit blaming Bush for something that YOU caused. I recently heard some person stranded in New Orleans ask, "Where is our Giuliani?" One thing is for sure; he's not within the ranks of the democratic party.
