Pentagon Not Reimbursing Troops Who Buy Body Armor

Posted by Jesse Berney on September 30, 2005 at 02:42 PM

Does this sound like an administration that cares about our troops?

Nearly a year after Congress demanded action, the Pentagon still hasn't figured out a way to reimburse U.S. troops for body armor and equipment they purchased to better protect themselves while serving in Iraq.

For Marine Sgt. Todd Bowers that extra equipment -- a high-tech rifle scope bought by his father for $600 and a $100 pair of goggles -- turned out to be a life-or-death purchase. And he has never been reimbursed.

Bowers, who is from Arizona but going to school in Washington, D.C., was shot by a sniper during his second tour in Iraq, but the round lodged in his scope, and his goggles protected his eyes from the shrapnel that struck his face.

"We weren't provided those going to Iraq," he said yesterday. "But they literally saved my life."

He and other soldiers and their parents are still spending hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for armor they say the military won't provide. One U.S. senator said yesterday he will try again to force the Pentagon to obey the reimbursement law it opposed from the outset and has so far not implemented.

It is a crime -- literally -- that the Pentagon has not reimbursed the troops for their body armor and other vital equipment. It is equally reprehensible that our troops and their families are still purchasing this equipment themselves.

We can do better than this.

What's sad is, betcha Bowers and his buddies still vote for the Republicans next time! Strong on Defense and all that garbage they are fed!!!

Yes, a thread on the military is topical. This is a letter I sent to editors today. I think the "permanent" bases need to be a widespread topic of discussion, along with what we are going to "plant" there.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the U.S and coalition forces invaded Iraq, it had an army of over 330,000 in addition to a People's Army, which, by all accounts, wasn't very effective.
Obviously, since the trained forces were not successful in their war with Iran and were incapable of keeping the U.S. out, they weren't a whole lot better. But is that a realistic rationale for the current U.S. position that the occupation must continue until the Iraqi forces are brought up to snuff?
That doesn't make any sense and when something makes no sense, it's logical to conclude that there's some deception afoot.
Is the real story that the U.S.is just buying time until the military installations it's constructing for itself are complete? And, if the originally planned 14 permanent bases have been scaled back to 4 facilities, that will be manned by a rotating staff, does that mean nuclear missiles have been ruled out and the Pentagon has decided to introduce them some place else?
Can we look forward to yet another Vietnam redux?
This really makes me speechless. What can our Government be thinking? I also just learned that this morning on C-Span, Brian Lamb, hungup on a man because he started his comment with a gripe towards Democrats, then he said and the Republicans are trying to do too much against the Laws and regulations in place. Mr Lamb said, you called in on the wrong line you aren't a Republican? Look! If our Republicans wanted to remove the Pope dead or alive and some of the Republicans didn't agree, then the Republicans don't want them? Is that really the tone of the Republicans? Is that why they are so united because like Hitler you are an outcast if you don't believe exactly the way they do? I am so glad that Bush nor any of his Cabinet members aren't like Hitlers personality or no one could oppose and not be treated as an enemy? Sounds like the Nixon mind set to me, what do you think?
John Kerry voted to approve the $87 billion for the Iraq war, which included the funds to equip the soldiers. The bill he voted on had a requirement that the $87 billion be paid for by rolling back part of the Bush tax cuts for those making over $300,000 a year. The bill did not pass because President Bush threatened to veto it.
Kerry voted against the second bill to approve the $87 billion of the Iraq war. This bill did not require it to be paid by rolling back the tax cuts. In fact, this bill had no way of funding itself other than increasing the deficit. This is the bill that actually passed.
We had better, the only problems was, the rove machine got the flip flop message out before anyone really understood what it was about.
It's even more criminal that soldiers who can't afford to purchase the body armor go without.
But that's what this administration stands for isn't it? You aren't worth protection unless you have lots of money.
6
Pam and PH,
You guys are right about the armor. I know first hand about purchasing it. I do recall that military families that could afford the armor for their son or daughter also sent money for the ones that could not afford it.
It does not mean that everyone got it though.
I am heartsick to hear once again how the chicken hawks in this administration are willing to send other people's children into danger without even giving them protective equipment. I am outraged that the same chicken hawks swaggered and lied (and spit on the Constitution) to get us into this war. And I am losing patience with Democrats who won't stand up to this administration and demand that we get out of this war. Cindy Sheehan for President--we need someone with guts to be at the head of our party!
As an Iraqi freedom veteran, I can personally attest to the lack of essential gear needed by our troops in Iraq. I spent my first seven months in country wearing the old vietnam era "flak" jacket. We also drove around the countryside with no more protection from the roadside bombs than the sandbags we used to line the floor would provide us. Eventually we used OUR OWN money to purchase steel sheets from a local Iraqi buisiness and fabricated our own armored doors for our vehicles. Unfortunately the protection we hoped it would provide wasn't enough to save a member of my company who was killed by an IED. It was really disheartening to inform the people back home about our lack of preparedness and be labeled a "whiner" or see in the papers that we were a bunch of pansies compared to the soldiers in past conflicts. As Army Reservists we were treated like second class soldiers by the government and even by our active duty counterparts. I will say though, what is even more appaling to me as a soldier is the cut in funding for the VA by our president! When I went to the VA for my post deployment physical (which I had to drive 2 hours away for) they actually informed me that I made too much money in my civilian job so I would have pay for the physical myself! At least they accepted my blue cross I guess.
So, what is the Pentagon spending money on?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Since Senator Rockefeller is one of only eight members of Congress still entitled to get straight answers from the Department of Defense, perhaps he should ask whether the US has introduced, or plans to introduce, nuclear missiles and bombs into Iraq to "protect" the bases it is having built.
Could it be that all that hoopla about Saddam Hussein having nuclear bombs and the drones to deliver them was just a ploy to get international inspectors to certify there was nothing there and keep them from coming back and having another look around when there are?

I can't believe a year later (after Congress demanded action regarding this issue) that the Pentagon still has their head stuck in a "hole".

***Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., said he will offer amendments to the defense appropriations bill working its way through Congress to take the issue out of the hands of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and give control to military unit commanders in the field.

"Rumsfeld is violating the law," Dodd said. "It's been sitting on the books for over a year. They were opposed to it. It was insulting to them. I'm sorry that's how they felt."

Dodd said men and women in uniform "are serving halfway around the world. And they shouldn't have to rely on bake sales and lemonade stands to raise money" to get them the equipment they need.***

AMEN to that, Senator Dodd!!!

Bush does not support our troops.
Cheney does not support our troops.
Rumpsfeld does not support or troops.
Now, the Pentagon does not support our troops?
How pathetic is that?!!!

I guess that became apparent when they started to throw soldiers into jail for PR reasons over the torturegate scandles, even though the torture orders came down from the top.

The industrial military complex has gotten out of control. They must be brought down before the US is turned into a third world country with a fascist-military government and we become their serfs.

A proof of strength of conviction by any Democrat would be a demand to reinstitute the draft. Horrible, costly and deadly decisions are being made by politicians, and supported by their constituents, because the consequences of the decisions are not equally shared across economic strata in this country.

Also, the time has come. There is no "fixing what we broke" in Iraq. We can no more eliminate insecurity and strife in that country than a sliver can heal the infection it created. We're the sliver. We need to be removed. We need to withdraw our troops today, and we need to abandon the idea of leaving "enduing bases" over there, too. You can't have an exit plan if you don't plan to exit.

Howard Dean was right when he said it "remains to be seen <whether Iraqis would be better off without Saddam." Can there be any dispute of that now...over two years later?

On April 22, 2004, Army Ranger Pat Tillman was killed in Afghanistan. Tillman was a football star at Arizona State University, chosen Pac-10 defensive player of the year in 1997, and selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL draft. He rejected the Cardinals’ offer of a three year, $3.6 million contract extension to join the Army in June 2002, hoping to fight Al Queda.

After his death, the current administration regaled him as a hero capitalizing on the loss to propagandize its campaigns in Afghanistan -- and Iraq.

It was a lie.

In "Family Demands the Truth, New inquiry may expose events that led to Pat Tillman’s death," investigative journalist Robert Collier of the San Francisco Chronicle exposes a military campaign on American soil to preserve Tillman's status as an American hero -- while denying Tillman's opposition to the current administration and his family's desperate efforts to learn the truth.

Originally stationed in Iraq, Tillman let his true feelings be known: "'I can see it like a movie screen,' [Spc. Russell] Baer said. 'We were outside of (a city in southern Iraq) watching as bombs were dropping on the town. We were at an old air base, me, Kevin [Tillman's brother] and Pat, we weren’t in the fight right then. We were talking. And Pat said, 'You know, this war is so f— illegal.' And we all said, 'Yeah.' That’s who he was. He totally was against Bush.'"

Frustrated and despondent, Tillman's family continues to seek answers:

"'There have been so many discrepancies so far that it’s hard to know what to believe,' Mary Tillman said. 'There are too many murky details.' ... On her copies [of military reports], Mary Tillman has added competing marks and scrawls — countless color-coded tabs and angry notes such as 'Contradiction!' 'Wrong!' and '????'"

"'The administration clearly was using this case for its own political reasons,' said the father, Patrick Tillman. 'This cover-up started within minutes of Pat’s death, and it started at high levels. This is not something that (lower-ranking) people in the field do,' he said."

Journalist Collier exposes the lies:

Conflicting testimony. In his Nov. 14, 2004, interrogation, the first investigator expressed frustration with “watching some of these guys getting off, what I thought … was a lesser of a punishment than what they should’ve received. And I will tell you, over a period of time … the stories have changed. They have changed to, I think, help some individuals.”
Commanders’ accountability. According to the documents and interviews, Capt. William Saunders, to whom platoon leader Uthlaut had protested splitting his troops, was allowed to change his testimony over a crucial detail — whether he had reported Uthlaut’s dissent to a higher ranking commander. In initial questioning, Saunders said he had done so, but when that apparently was contradicted by that commander’s testimony, Saunders was threatened with perjury charges. He was given immunity and allowed to change his prior testimony.
Inaccurate information. While the military code gives clear guidance for informing family members upon a soldier’s death when cases are suspected of being a result of friendly fire, that procedure was not followed in the Tillman case. After Tillman’s death, the Army gave conflicting and incorrect descriptions of the events.
Legal liability. In testimony on Nov. 14, the officer who conducted the first investigation said that he thought some Rangers could have been charged with “criminal intent,” and that some Rangers committed “gross negligence.” The legal difference between the two terms is roughly similar to the distinction between murder and involuntary manslaughter. As a result of his family's persistence, the military has now launched a fourth probe into Tillman's death, nearly 18 months later. They may never learn the truth. To the current administration's relief, the American public won't either, and sadly doesn't care.

HappyFriday on October 1, 2005 at 12:14 PM

Happy,

there was something about that case of Tillman that Never did sit right. Trying to make it look like it was too confusing there, so that's why he was shot by his own men. I mean, how come that was the first case of this? And it just happens to be an American Sports Star, who is saying the Invasion is Illegal. Could it be that someone was afraid he might get PR in the US about that.
I posted an article yesterday on the Open thread, about a couple grunts who had been trying for months and months to report Torture and abuse, and their officers did not want them to talk about it.

"The news that yet another Army private, Lynndie England, 22, of Fort Ashby, West Virginia, has been convicted and sentenced for posing for the infamous photos of torture at Abu Ghraib, while her superiors duck responsibility, is a sad commentary on the extent to which the Bush administration has corrupted the US Army.

They choose, instead, to stone the woman, like the hypocrites of Bible fame, contending that the photos inflamed the insurgency in Iraq. It is the torture, not the photos, that inflames the insurgency. And responsibility for the torture reaches directly up the chain of command to the commander-in-chief himself. Perhaps when even more repulsive photos and videos of torture at Abu Ghraib are released, as a federal judge has now ordered, the American people finally will be jarred awake.

The problem is not with the Republican Party, who is doing what they always do and doing it successfully. The problem is with our party letting the Republic Party define the issues. This headline on a DNC website which is mostly viewed by Democrats is preaching to the converted. The job of the DNC is to make discussions like these national discussions and not being frightened off by the Republican Party's labeling any questions related to the war effort as unpatriotic. Our own party needs to define the issues in a straightforward no nonsense way. If our leaders don't do this, we are going to continue this downward spiral that is not good for anyone. Democratic Leaders, please get off of this no win situation of letting the other party set the tone and define the issues so this country can start moving forward again instead of this agonizing backward trip we've been on.

Death Toll Climbs to 25 in Bali Blasts

BALI, Indonesia -- Terrorists targeted the Indonesian tropical resort of Bali for the second time in three years today with coordinated bombings that devastated seafood and noodle restaurants packed with foreigners, killing at least 25 people and wounding at least 100.

The blasts came a month after Indonesia's president warned of possible terrorist attacks. Two Americans were among the wounded.

Today's near-simultaneous blasts at two seafood cafes on Jimbaran beach and a three-story noodle and steakhouse in downtown Kuta occurred almost three years to the day that bombings blamed on Islamic militants killed 202 people, mostly foreigners in Bali.

So according to this it's the Hillary supporters who are the most against Kerry running again. And mj keeps thinking it's the Dean folks who are his enemy.

Inside Inside the Bubble

The film about John Kerry's campaign won't tell you why he lost.

Inside the Bubble, a documentary that promises to reveal how the Kerry campaign lost the 2004 election, has restored a bit of campaign-season buzz to Washington. The Drudge Report called the film a "devastating behind-the-scenes look." Lloyd Grove promised despair among Kerry loyalists and snickering from Hillary's followers as the doc revealed the Massachusetts senator, who still hopes to run in 2008, as boobish and flailing.

Titillating possibilities flitted through my head: grainy footage of John Kerry flip-flopping late at night in his hotel room. Strategist Bob Shrum controlling the candidate's every move from behind a glowing orb. Modern campaigns are so freeze-dried and antiseptic that one longs for unscripted moments, even after the fact. Plus, the film arrives as Democrats are still mulling the lessons of their loss. Should leaders of the party be cautious and calibrated to appeal to moderates and independents—or should they roar and stomp in an attempt to rally the base and captivate voters with authenticity?

Unfortunately, Inside the Bubble, which premiered at the New York Television Festival Thursday, doesn't do much to answer those questions. The movie overpromises the way sham politicians do.

Miller Walks: The Plot Thickens
by Arianna Huffington

What made her refuse Libby’s waiver when it was first offered but accept it now? (Especially since Judge Hogan had told Miller that “she was mistaken in her belief that she was defending a free press, stressing that the government source she ‘alleges she is protecting’ had already released her from her promise of confidentiality.”)

Was Miller’s sudden eagerness to find a get-out-of-jail excuse prompted by Fitzgerald’s planning to ask for an extension of the grand jury?

Or was it prompted by Fitzgerald’s gearing up to charge her with criminal contempt?

If all it took for Miller to feel properly released was a phone call, why did she wait 85 days to make it?

And so we don’t forget what this story is really about, and given that the aluminum tubes crap that Miller put on the front page of the New York Times was being heavily promoted by Cheney, how much of that bogus information came to Miller via Libby?

Rep. Danny K. Davis, Illinois Democrat and a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, quickly took issue.

I really feel like the DNC has "cut back" in their efforts to facilitate growth of the party. At a time when more and more Republicans are waking up and realizing they are not represented by THIER party, this party is not working hard enough to bring them in. Let me be clear; these people DO NOT want another Republican Party, because they REALIZE it was the Republican philosophy that created them. They WANT to come to us because we stand AGAINST those who disenfranchised them. And we don't even maintain our BLOG properly.

They see Republicans as "not caring about the people" and leave that party, assuming things are different on THIS side. Maybe the people at the top should do more, so these new Democrats feel that SOMEONE cares about them.

I know I make comments about heavy thread, but that's because I have dial up. There is this thing about debugging that has been happening on this site and no others that I am experiencing too.

Maybe the DNC is busy doing other projects and can't keep up the blog for us hungry posters. Maybe they are working behind the scenes to make it better. Maybe they needed a few days off. It sure does a person good. Maybe it's not in the budget to keep someone working for new thread.

I need to study my accounting and english. Tests on Monday. BBL...with vino! ;)

Folks, I wouldn't care a bit to help moderate this blog as I have all the free time in the world, and am home every day being handicapped. A lot of those posts being made by the goons the GOP sends over here to stir trouble would meet their end in a quick manner.

Last night, we had a republican voter come on and was changing his politics. This was around the 700th post on the open thread. I had a very good and long conversation with him and it was very productive. I welcomed him to our party and let him know we would do what we could to help him. Those types of posts deserve to be here, or any post by a republican or other party that is being honest wanting to know the truth. The ones like Dash, and a few others though, I'd make sure met a bitter end quickly.

Will_Matney on October 1, 2005 at 08:59 PM

Will and William,

I hear ya when it comes to the SERIOUS problems on this blog.

Did you realize that while thousands upon thousands of people were marching in cities across the US, this blog had NO THREAD from Friday to Monday??

And then we get a thread saying they are working on open threads...blah.

We had open threads...what the heck happen?? To add lovely blades of grass and that damn red line running down the right side of the page.

*shaking my head*

50
PeppermintLizzy on October 1, 2005 at 09:09 PM

You know what was funny though was when Dash came on here one night asking everyone questions and wanting facts. When I asked him a few, he never would answer the first. One question I asked about supreme court rulings for the poor, handicapped, etc really got his goat. His only reply, and this is the truth, was that would discriminate against rich folks! No other question would he tip and dodged me like the plague. He started in again I think day before yesterday. Right after his first post, I asked him those same questions again and he flew the coop. Not one other word did he mutter unless someone banned him I don't know about.

'Tis this the thread of the night>>

52
DeLLBerto on October 1, 2005 at 09:22 PM

DeLLBerto,

Yes it is, the other got so big we had to put it here since nobody has started another open thread. By the way, welcome back and it's good to see you. I enjoyed the talk we had last night very much!

53
Will_Matney on October 1, 2005 at 09:27 PM

DeLLBerto,

While I'm thinking about it, you just got back from pulling your tour in Iraq didn't you? If so, what did you run into about body armor and other necessisties?

54
Will_Matney on October 1, 2005 at 09:29 PM

please fix this blog. got thrown out again.

55
WilliamSchubert on October 1, 2005 at 09:41 PM

It feels like it did when we had only between 200 and 250 posts per day.... except now we have 500 - 1000, and we would have more if they refreshed the thread at 250 like they used to.

56
WilliamSchubert on October 1, 2005 at 09:54 PM

Hello guys. Just popping in & out.

"By the way, I have political forum in need of Democrats - it is www.jvpolitics.com - You should check it out and show those Republicans who is right!"

Posted by juidi on September 30, 2005 at 06:55 PM

I checked out your forum & you are definitely infested with blind repuke scum over there. I see one just registered today and has 24 posts already. I used to like battling with the idiots, but not any more. It truly is a waste of time.

57
Chuck on October 1, 2005 at 10:01 PM

Chuck,

The far right and the paid goons, you couldn't beat the truth into, or out of them with a 2 x 4 right between the eyes. The younger can be talked to but seems like folks in their mid 30's and up, it's a waste of time to try. I guess by this time, they have a mind set no matter what. I don't believe it would change their minds if their GOP president would want to start a nuclear war!

58
Will_Matney on October 1, 2005 at 10:17 PM

I was told to mention this, from Laura Flanders blog:

Well, William, when you go there make sure to tell them....

...that you just had a visit with what should be their electoral base and that we now are fully aware that we have been tossed out like trash by them. And that they will never win elections without us. Its too bad for the country that the Democratic party is so stupid. Because when the split takes place, we will lose elections for the next 50 years and by then, the planet might be totally incinerated.

Good evening! I see the blog continues to look more and more like a ghost town. If somebody would FIX the blog maybe more would post.

SNL premier tonight! Let's see if they do any good political skits.

61
RoseZ on October 1, 2005 at 11:12 PM

Oh, and Jacque, if you come back on, I'll be pouring myself some vino in a few minutes!! Join me!

62
RoseZ on October 1, 2005 at 11:13 PM

At one time I was pretty sure the Democrat main webpage had a place where you could get free web space for a political website. It also had something to start a blog. I don't see this anywhere now, is it still available? If so, could someone point me in the right direction.

I was wanting to start a website and first off put something up about Bennet and Limbaugh. I dont mind Democrat advertizing one bit but hate to use a free webpage that has popups and or big banner ads, etc. as I dont like to push a bunch of stuff on folks trying to sell them something. That would run folks off that may otherwise read it.

63
Will_Matney on October 1, 2005 at 11:14 PM

Good Evening Friends: here's a nice piece on Ronnie Earle:

Earle says his prosecution of DeLay isn't personal -- he says he has spoken to DeLay just once in his life. But clearly the case has acquired a personal flavor, as much of DeLay's public defense has focused on Earle, and Earle has held little back, too. ("Being called partisan and vindictive by Tom DeLay is like being called ugly by a frog," Earle said last year.)

Live from NY, it's Saturday Night!

Got my vino ready, RoseZ!

I need it. My printer broke & I have a paper due first thing Monday morning!

65
Jaline on October 1, 2005 at 11:31 PM

Hey Jacque!! Broken printer? That sucks. Matthews broke in his dorm tonight, too. Do you have use of printers at your school?

66
RoseZ on October 1, 2005 at 11:33 PM

Yes. It's ok for my writing assignments, but I have gotten used to doing my keyboarding (which is loaded here at home) and printing off my assignment reports from here. sigh....I can use my dads until I purchase a new one. I'm afraid this one is really done in...and my hands are stained with black ink. haha

Does Matthew know how to repair his printer?

I've not watch SNL for more than a year. This should be fun.

67
Jaline on October 1, 2005 at 11:37 PM

Matthew's dad tried to help him over the phone. Basically, it was running short on ink and it was putting creases in his papers. Dad told him to shake the ink cartridge to redistribute the ink. Matthew shook it WAY too hard, and ink went all over the dorm -- including his chemistry paper. So, he really needs an ink cartridge. We thought we sent a spare up, but he can't seem to find it.

He'll be coming home in a couple of weeks. Ken will check out the printer when he picks Matthew up. Hopefully, it's nothing big. But we're lucky because Ken's job supplies us with spare printers since they down-sized.

Funny skit on Jet Blue issue!!

68
RoseZ on October 1, 2005 at 11:43 PM

Great imitation of Aaron Brown! LOL!

69
RoseZ on October 1, 2005 at 11:44 PM

I hope he can make due until it gets fixed. Lots of fellow dormers to help out.

I can't wait until the cartoon on SNL.

70
Jaline on October 1, 2005 at 11:48 PM

Well, he also works at the computer center for the Engineering Department there, so he has plenty of access to computers and printers. It just means he has to walk a ways to get to them.

Is there always a cartoon on SNL? I really only started watching it last year, so I don't know.

71
RoseZ on October 1, 2005 at 11:50 PM

why does it take about 4 minutes to refresh this page? is it my computer or the blog. we have dsl and it uesed to be instantaneous.

What are the odds of Fitzgerald bringing perjury charges against Rove and his subsequent resignation?
Karen Hughes might have been brought back on board so she could eventually assume the post of domestic propaganda. After her no respect middle east tour she's probably aching to go back to manipulating the american press.

Richard, I try to stop guessing on these things. I mean, I assumed Gore would win in 2000. I assumed Kerry would win in 2004. I assumed Rummy would get nailed for Abu Ghraib. I thought Dubya would be tried for war crimes. Then there was Novak, Libby, Rove, Frist and on and on and on.

Seems they all get away with everything.

95
RoseZ on October 2, 2005 at 12:46 AM

Hola Karen!

96
RoseZ on October 2, 2005 at 12:46 AM

Rose - I want to see that, but Kirk doesn't. He thinks he saw all the best bits on a trailer when we went to see a different movie - we're those freaks who usually sit with their fingers in their ears and humming to not see previews to anything. Anyway, we neglected to do that once and saw a bunch of trailers, including this one. Guess I'll see it myself on video!

Al Gore is coming to Ann Arbor - FREE - with Edwards. Tickets available 9am Monday. I AM VERY EXCITED. Kirk - not so much. Weird little situation we're in right now - usually, we see eye to eye. Anyway, I'M EXCITED to see if he's back to his base or a politician still....

97
Karen on October 2, 2005 at 12:50 AM

What's with the red on the orchestra members' eye region?

Is that guy singing with Kanye anybody famous?

When it comes to music, I am SO out of it!!

98
RoseZ on October 2, 2005 at 12:50 AM

Who hasn't had a baby yet? The SNL weekend update lady? Was she on? Just saw two movies of heart-felt-sap - It Could Happen to You and Hope and Glory - on Encore. beer, HFS, feelin' kinda mellow. But have you never been mellow, have you never try-ee-iiii-eyed (thank you, Olivia Newton-John).

99
Karen on October 2, 2005 at 12:53 AM

I think she is.

His backup group looks familiar to me, but I don't know if the other guy was famous. But the sound was VERY good.

100
WilliamSchubert on October 2, 2005 at 12:53 AM

Karen, I'm a Jodie Foster junkie (except for Silence of Lambs b/c I'm ascared!). I saw her on like 4 talks shows and there were different trailers. I thought I knew exactly how it would go down. I was completely wrong.

There are surprises, and I won't say more than that because I don't want to ruin it. I think Kirk will be pleasantly surprised.

101
RoseZ on October 2, 2005 at 12:54 AM

Hi Karen:

I hope you get there. Do tell us what Gore and Edwards have to say. And what was up with the high school in Ann Arbor that had to close because of "mysterious illness"?

102
PeppermintLizzy on October 2, 2005 at 12:55 AM

Karen, nope. Tina Fey had her baby. She is on leave. Schube's sister is due any day now. She had Braxton Hicks the other day.

103
RoseZ on October 2, 2005 at 12:55 AM

So, any thoughts and opinions on the Bush Crime Family being found GUILTY for illegally "catapulting the propaganda", or using executive branch agencies to fund "commercials" and promotions through the media? It disgusts me that they found this illegal, but no consequence!!

104
Karen on October 2, 2005 at 12:55 AM

A bit of good news"

Dems Agree to Recommend Early Primaries

Democrats trying to change their presidential primaries for 2008 agreed Saturday to recommend that at least two other states join Iowa and New Hampshire in voting during the opening days of the nominating campaign.

105
Jaline on October 2, 2005 at 12:55 AM

Lizzy - new one on me - haven't heard - that's what I get for not reading the paper here - apparently Kirk's company has also been in the paper - guess it's time to get local!!

Rose - ME TOO! LOVE HER!! Loved Silence of the Lambs, but it was the last movie I have seen in the theater with my mom (seriously) 'cause she screamed all the way through it. It was kinda funny - like to "torture" her with it to this day.

106
Karen on October 2, 2005 at 12:57 AM

The Bush regime is adept at escaping consequence. Pappy taught them well every time he bailed junior out of every mess he has ever made!

107
RoseZ on October 2, 2005 at 12:58 AM

Gore & Edwards.

2 hotties!

That would be a great ticket!

108
Jaline on October 2, 2005 at 12:58 AM

OMG - I had Braxton-Hicks for, like, a month before my last kid. Finally couldn't take it anymore, and faked "water broken" just so the doctor could help out - turned out I was 5 cm dilated with no "real" contractions (F*ck THAT!).

109
Karen on October 2, 2005 at 12:59 AM

Jaline - I saw that - interesting. I thought the plan was to have a rotated primary with some big/small states representative for each "phase" and who gets to go first rotating over 4 seasons or something like that. I liked that idea, but I guess politics is keeping Iowa and NH on top.

110
Karen on October 2, 2005 at 01:01 AM

Jacque, thank goodness!! Every once in a while I feel like them dems are trying to do something! It's not often, but it happens.

BTW, question for you (you may or may not know). Do the Dems always go before the Pugs for conventions? I think it would be better if we have ours after the pugs. They had WAY too much time to destroy us between when we had ours and they had theirs and the subsequent election.

111
RoseZ on October 2, 2005 at 01:02 AM

1) please fix this blog

2) I didn't like the Debbie Downer, or the fighting husband and wife skit, and I don't think they needed the Girls gone wild sketch, but the rest of it was pretty good. I would give todays show an 88% B.

112
WilliamSchubert on October 2, 2005 at 01:02 AM

Yikes, Karen! I never had Braxton Hicks. My first was induced b/c of pre-eclampsia. The second was placenta separation. I hemorrhaged in the parking lot of our local Friendly's restaurant -- by myself!! Crazy!

113
RoseZ on October 2, 2005 at 01:04 AM

There are always parts of SNL that I'm not thrilled with. At least it was like that way back when with the original NRFPT players in the 70's. I don't think I watched SNL from 1982 when I married until last year. I like watching the political skits.

114
RoseZ on October 2, 2005 at 01:06 AM

ROSE - OUCH!! Nick was one week late - finally started labor the morning I was supposed to have my consultation about inducing. Anne was actually 3 days early, but after intense contractions for 4 weeks, I was SOOOOOOOO OVER it. In the end, the "official" labor for both was less than 10 hours, and they kinda popped out. For Anne, that was a good thing 'cause she had the cord wrapped twice around her neck - imagine if I HADN'T decided to "fake it" that morning and demand a doctor exam!!! Gives me the shakes just thinking about it.

115
Karen on October 2, 2005 at 01:10 AM

Karen,

I think that was the ideal primary season. I don't see it ever happening.

Rose,

With the repugs in control, don't look for anything the Dems propose to happen. ;]

I don't have an accurate answer to your question. I try to watch the Dem conventions and tried not to watch the Repugs. (I watched some of this years)

Peaceful rest, everyone.

117

Jaline - that's what I thought.

Anyway, best get some sleep - up until the wee hours yesterday, too, reading "Midas", by Russell Andrews, an EXCELLENT novel put out earlier this year that has a lot of the conspiracy stuff included, not to mention eery foresight into our current "gas crisis". Highly recommended. Can just see Gary Sinise in the lead role.... It's been a long time since I read a book in a day - and I read this one in 15 hours, including the 4 hours of sleep I got.

118
Karen on October 2, 2005 at 01:18 AM

Karen, I will have some thoughts on that in the future. Right now, I think the main problem is that the MSM doesn't do their job.

While I was in the hospital prior to the surgery, they gave me something to calm me down. The nurse decided to talk to me about New Orleans while I was becoming more and more drugged out. (This was prior to the anesthesia which knocked me out entirely)

Nurse: What about the busses?

I started singing the music they play on Stephanie Miller whenever they talk about Hannity mentioning the busses.

Bill: You know, they keep acting like there were thousands of busses. There were actually only around 246, and 70 of them didn't even work.

Nurse: But they could have used them.

Bill: Actually, they were not owned by the city, they were private busses. And the mayor DID use municipal busses (this was slurred) because he could, but he could only commandeer the busses is FEMA let them, and they said they would give them 700 busses, and they only set 100 busses.

Nurse: But they sent the bus drivers.

Bill: No they didn't

Nurse: Yes they did. And what about all the looting?

Bill: Most of that looting was bullshit. One Guy took a TV.

Nurse: I saw more looting than that.

Bill: Not a whole lot. You know what they found when they actually GOT there? Old Folks and children! And how much will those people enjoy those TVs and stuff? Until they get Cholera and Dysentary?

Nurse: Yes, the town is a mess. They should burn it to the ground.

Bill: I don't think so.

Nurse: But there is all that mold

Bill: They need to disinfect....

And then I passed out.

Schubert - yes, educating the masses has become our job. I've been doing that with family. I thought FEMA sent 100 busses TOTAL, and that 40 of them were a WEEK LATE?! Yeah, was horrified to hear my mom saying that crap, to the point of stammering too much to speak eloquently. She's the woman who has slapped me once in life, when I told her that one of my friends called another one of my friends a "N*gger" in Kindergarten. She said, "NEVER SAY THAT WORD." I said, "I DIDN'T - my FRIEND DID." She said, "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO SAID IT FIRST. YOU NEVER NEVER NEVER SAY THAT WORD." I never have since. sigh, now I have to defend the truth against the lies to her!!

Jaline,

I agree as well. I've been postulating this for quite some time.

I seem to remember just recently a poll showing Gore with KILLER NUMBERS! He just was over the top.

So yeah, I think Gore/Edwards would be a great team. I sometimes think Lieberman was just the worst choice for VP in history. The guy is basically a repug anyway.

But the killer choice would be Gore/Feingold.

But either one would be great.Wonder how Gore/B.Clinton would go over?

this is odd. or is it?

US finds fever bacteria during war protest weekend

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Small amounts of a bacteria that causes "rabbit fever" were found on Washington's National Mall last weekend as thousands of protesters marched against the
Iraq War, U.S. health authorities said on Saturday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said several government environmental air monitors in the Mall area detected low levels of Francisella tularensis bacteria that cause Tularemia, commonly known as rabbit fever, on September 24-25.

Public health agencies had no reports of any related human or animal illnesses caused by the bacteria.

The
CDC said it issued an alert on Friday night as a precaution so medical personnel were aware of the situation and could report any suspected cases.

Rabbit fever can not be passed from person to person and can be effectively treated with readily available medicines, the CDC said. Symptoms usually appear 3 to 5 days after exposure, but in rare cases can take up to two weeks.

Symptoms of the disease, which an infected person would have begun experiencing no earlier than on Monday, include: sudden fever, chills, headaches, conjunctivitis, diarrhea, muscle aches, joint pain, dry cough and progressive weakness.

District of Columbia health officials told local radio station WTOP on Saturday the detected bacteria was not harmful and probably occurred naturally.

The CDC waited a week to notify city officials of the detected bacteria because it took that long to test the samples at labs and confirm its presence, the radio station reported.

According to the CDC's Web site, people can get rabbit fever by:

* Being bitten by a infected tick, deerfly or other insect

* Handling infected animal carcasses

* Eating or drinking contaminated food or water

* Breathing in the bacteria

The CDC also said the bacteria can be used as a weapon if made into an aerosol that could be inhaled.

"The bacteria that cause Tularemia occur widely in nature and could be isolated and grown in quantity in a laboratory, although manufacturing an effective aerosol weapon would require considerable sophistication," the CDC said.

The Washington Post said the germ that causes tularemia is considered a biohazard because it is highly infectious and was tested in the 1960s by the United States as a biological weapon.

One of many security measures adopted in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks, the air monitors are part of the nationwide "Biowatch" system installed to sample the air in major metropolitan areas daily for pathogens that could be used in a biological attack on the United States.

Democrats Look to Add Two Early Primary States
"Democrats trying to change their presidential primaries for 2008 agreed to recommend that at least two other states join Iowa and New Hampshire in voting during the opening days of the nominating campaign," the AP reports.

That expansion "is intended to provide more racial and geographic diversity to an opening process now dominated by Iowa and New Hampshire. Those states, representing about 1.5 percent of the country's population, have residents who are mostly white. The additional states, expected to be named later, were likely to include a smaller state from the South and a smaller state from the Southwest or West."

133
Cyn_NY on October 2, 2005 at 08:34 AM

Hi Cyn!

It would be nice politically to have some changes in the Primary election dates. My association still wants to change the Presidential back to May instead of March. It is "hard work" pulling that one off, but makes for a nice Summer. I can actually take time off in May/June to do my planting!

Deadlines galore in my profession. And laws that change what seems daily too.

A Song of Sorrow -- and Endurance

Through the work of such an artist, we will be reminded that not even the force of a killer hurricane is greater than the force of the human soul. Nor is it more enduring than the passion to live and to interpret. It is still the writer's duty, as one scribe said on a cold winter night in Stockholm in 1950, "to help man endure by lifting his heart . . . to help him endure and prevail." The speaker, accepting the Nobel Prize in Literature, was William Faulkner, of Oxford, Miss.

My Letter to ABC News This Morning

Dear Sir:

George Stephanopoulos' interview this morning with General Casey was a terrible example of abuse in journalism. It is atrocious of ABC News to act as a conduit for pure and simple Government propaganda. You have the responsibility of honest journalism, not slavish pandering to this terribly dishonest Administration.

Casey simply repeated the meaningless phrases created by DoD to excuse this Administration's failed war of aggression against Iraq. When Casey said, "we are defeating them over there instead of fighting them here," he lied.

This is the repeated lie that was used to deceive the nation into this illegal and unprovoked war. There is no evidence that fighting insurgency and terrorists in Iraq will in any way reduce terrorism in other parts of the world, particularly here in the United States. This is pure propaganda, and Stephanopoulos certainly knows it. He failed to confront Casey with the truth.

I am very disappointed in ABC News. I had honestly expected better.

Sincerely,

Hello All! Jaline today's cartoon was hurtful.

I'm going to pay attention to Feingold. He may have the right stuff.

A new star rises on both sides of the aisle

A longtime darling of the left is getting an unusual endorsement from an architect of the political right.

A Bush pollster, Matthew Dowd, who helped with the president's 2000 and 2004 victories, tells us that -- of all the '08 Democratic presidential prospects -- Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin is the most astute.

Feingold appeals to the Democratic base with his vocal opposition to the war in the Iraq, Dowd notes, but he veered toward the political center with his vote this week supporting Roberts's confirmation.

''He has the antiwar constituency and a paddle in the water for moderates," Dowd says of Wisconsin's junior senator, who is visiting New Hampshire this weekend.

In fact, Feingold, a Rhodes scholar and Harvard Law grad who has served in the Senate since 1992, specializes in mixing it up. In 1999, he annoyed colleagues when he cast the lone Democratic vote against a motion to dismiss impeachment charges against President Clinton.

Morning all,

Well, this morning's paper has this news. Looks like the Republican Think Tanks have decided that AARP must go (Looks like they forgot that AARP went along with the Medicare Crapola(

That's why conservative organizations with names such as The Senior Coalition and the National Association of Senior Concerns are rising up to challenge AARP.

They accuse the nonpartisan group of being too liberal, and want to take away some of its power when baby boomers are swelling the ranks of older Americans.

The new assault on the nation's largest senior organization is driven in part by political polarization, the rise of conservatism and, most recently, the debate over President Bush's plan to overhaul Social Security.

The Bush administration is the military's worst enemy. Rumsfeld has repeatedly punished those leaders who have spoken up and told the truth. They are being considered as "disloyal" to their commander in chief. Rumsfeld knew about the state of equipment and training in the Reserve components well in advance of Iraq. He was told that we were stretched too thin with Afghanistan and Bosnia to go into Iraq. He lied to to military as well as the civilians about the reasons we were going into Iraq. He is putting expensive contractors into jobs that soldiers have traditionally done to take care of soldiers at less expense. It is interesting that the expense of training soldiers was figured into the military cost of these jobs, but not into the cost of the contractors, who hire trained soldiers away from the military to do the jobs the military trained them to do. The support soldiers who are not being used in their jobs are doing jobs they were never trained for. The administration has continually given lower enlisted soldiers a smaller percentage pay raise than the rest of the military. They are trying to cut benefits for military families, whose budgets are already stretched to the breaking point. US military personnel are being treated as disposible nonentities while the rich are getting more tax cuts. At a time when Iraq is creating more and more disabled veterans who need Veterans' Administration(VA) services, the VA budget and services are being cut. We need to stand up and support our military, because the Bush administraiton sure doesn't.

In case anyone is interested, this was my Letter to Editor this morning, in response to the groups trying to challenge AARP:

The Republican Think Tanks have been hard at work trying to find a way to get rid of AARP, and what they conceive as their "Liberal" agenda. ("Conservatives Seeking to Challenge Power of AARP).

We now have at least two new Conservative Senior groups trying to take membership away from AARP. One group's website touts AARP as fostering big government, higher taxes and burdensome regulation. Laughable, when you consider what this current Conservative Administration has wrought with their Policies and more government, and lower taxes merely for the wealthy.

And God forbid I should continue to get my husband's prescriptions out of Canada where I estimate I save $1500 per year on them. Why that is nothing more than Liberal to consider helping the elderly! I really should be forced to purchase them from the US Pharmaceutical companies where they gouge us with their pricing!

And it's certainly outrageous that AARP lobbied against the privatization of Social Security which would have stripped millions of dollars from going to fund our accounts! ( I hope the baby boomers these groups are trying to entice, notice that these new groups are pro-termination of Social Security by installing of private accounts.)

AARP has offered many discounts and services over the years, but the most important one has always been their MediGap policies, which have always remained the most competitive in the market place. AARP has not allowed first Prudential, now UnitedHealthCare from overcharging it's members.

These new groups are nothing more than another arm of this Neo-Conservative group which has taken over the Republican Party of old. They say it themselves, they are not happy with AARP because they view them as 'anti-Bush'!

Well, the elderly are not stupid people, and they will see right through these group's attempts to swing them over to their membership. Any senior in this day and age, who does not realize that Liberalism is what has always taken care of them, needs to have their medication increased !

145

I am tired of Democrats scurrying to the middle. As I said last night, the Democratic Party is only going to LOSE votes if they continue to move right, because there ALREADY IS a Republican Party.

We keep losing folks on the left while trying to suck voters from the right. This MUST change, or the Democratic Party will split into Lieberman Democrats versus people like me. And while Sally* would be satisfied with Lieberman, I would not because there would be no difference between that party and the Republicans.

"AUSTIN – Grand jurors were presented a load of evidence, including testimony and phone records, that led them to believe Rep. Tom DeLay should be tried on a conspiracy charge, the leader of the Travis County grand jury that indicted the congressman said Friday.

He added: "Mr. Earle has stacks and stacks of papers – evidence of telephone calls from Mr. DeLay and everybody."

From the Washington Post,

Quote;

In Texas, The Hammer Runs Into an Anvil
DeLay Prosecutor Says Case Isn't Personal

By Juliet Eilperin and Mark Leibovich
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, October 2, 2005; Page A01

AUSTIN -- Ronnie Earle, the Texas prosecutor vilified by Rep. Tom DeLay as a "rogue district attorney" and an "unabashed partisan zealot," has heard worse.

There was the time, for instance, that a prominent Texas Democrat vowed to murder him.

"He would hold all these press conferences and say terrible things about me," Earle said, referring to Bob Bullock, the future lieutenant governor whom Earle investigated for allegedly misusing government resources in the 1970s.

"I know at least twice people took guns away from him when he said he was going to kill me."

Earle, a Democrat, was laughing as he recounted the story in the Travis County district attorney's office last week. And like many sagas in Earle's career, the Bullock episode comes with a footnote.

Earle couldn't persuade the grand jury to indict Bullock, who was then the state's comptroller and struggling with a drinking problem. But years later, once Bullock had sobered up, the two men were recounting old times at Bullock's kitchen table.

"You know years ago when you investigated me?" Earle recalled Bullock telling him. "I was guilty as hell."

It's unlikely that Earle will be reminiscing over a kitchen table anytime soon with DeLay, the powerful Texas Republican with the nickname "The Hammer," whom he indicted last week. DeLay, whom Earle charged with conspiring to funnel illegal corporate campaign contributions into the state's 2002 legislative elections, has been forced to temporarily abdicate his post as House majority leader.

But one can see why Earle loves telling the Bullock story. It vindicates Earle's position, at least in his own retelling (Bullock died in 1999). It also exemplifies his willingness to target swaggering political figures, regardless of party.

A recurring theme among Earle's critics over the years -- and a centerpiece of DeLay's attacks -- has been that Earle courts media attention too aggressively. "During his investigation," DeLay said, "he has gone out of his way to give several media interviews in his office. The only days he actually comes into his office, I'm told." These critiques gained resonance last week when the National Review reported that Earle had allowed a film crew extensive access to his office while he worked on the DeLay case.

Explaining his cooperation with the media, Earle places it in the broader context of his mission. "Justice depends on the law," he said. "The law depends on democracy, democracy depends on free elections and free elections depend on freedom of the press. I see it as all of a piece."

End Quote.

Housing Promises Made to Evacuees Have Fallen Short
Red Cross to Halt Hotel Stipends in 2 Weeks, And Hundreds of Shelters Have Closed

By Spencer S. Hsu and Elizabeth Williamson
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, October 2, 2005; Page A01

Two weeks before President Bush's mid-October goal for moving Hurricane Katrina victims out of shelters, more than 100,000 people still reside in such makeshift housing, and 400,000 more are in hotel rooms costing up to $100 a night.

Housing options promised by the federal government a month ago have largely failed to materialize. Cruise ships and trailer parks have so far proved in large part to be unworkable, while an American Red Cross program -- paid for by the federal government -- that allows storm victims to stay in motels or hotels is scheduled to expire Oct. 15. It is projected to cost the Federal Emergency Management Agency as much as $168 million.

Editorial from the Washington Post.

Whose Fault Is Pork?

Sunday, October 2, 2005; Page B06

THE HUGE EXPANSION of government overseen by the supposed party of small government has provoked a conservative backlash. The Heritage Foundation, which is usually respectful of Republican Party officeholders, recently noted that the party's ascendancy has coincided with an extraordinarily expensive Medicare prescription drug bill, the most costly farm bill in modern history, a 51 percent increase in spending on veterans and an increase in the annual number of pork projects from 6,000 in 2001 to 14,000 this year. Rank-and-file Republican House members are fed up with this unconservative record; on Wednesday they rebelled against Majority Leader Tom DeLay's scheme to have a big-spending ally keep his throne warm while he fights a criminal indictment. But the conservative revolt should logically be taken a step further. It should target President Bush.

When they are at their most timid, which means frequently, critics of government profligacy are content to blame "the system." They point to the pressures on members of Congress to grasp for favors for their districts. They invoke the old truth that special interests hire lobbyists to fight for subsidies while the public that pays for them goes unrepresented on K Street. But blaming systemic forces for political cronyism is like blaming crime on societal forces such as poverty. It's part of the explanation, but it isn't the whole one. Conservatives should know this better than anybody, since they believe most ardently in personal responsibility.

Who should be held responsible for runaway government spending? Mr. DeLay is certainly a good place to start. His governing principle was not to stand on principle but rather to rain taxpayers' money on every lobby that could return the favor with campaign contributions. But the biggest responsibility lies not with any member of the legislature but with Mr. Bush. Unlike senators and House members, the president represents the whole nation; he is supposed to defend the general interest against particularist claims. Moreover, he has the power to do so. If Congress serves up wasteful bills, the president can veto them.

Mr. Bush has been too cowardly to do that. He is the first president since John Quincy Adams to have served a full term without once exercising his veto, and his second term has so far been no different. This summer Mr. Bush promised to veto the transportation bill if it cost more than $256 billion. His threat brought the bill's size down quite a bit, but in the end he caved and signed a package that cost $295 billion. Why did he blink? Doesn't his administration pride itself on defending the power and prerogatives of the presidency? Mr. Bush's father had the courage to veto 44 bills in four years, and President Ronald Reagan once vetoed a transportation bill because it contained about 150 pork projects. But the bill that Mr. Bush just signed contained at least 6,000 pork projects.

The president's defenders plead that it's hard to veto bills when his own party controls Congress. But as the conservative commentator Bruce Bartlett points out, this defense is nonsense. President Franklin D. Roosevelt held office at a time of huge Democratic Party majorities in Congress, but that didn't stop him from vetoing a record 635 bills. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Jimmy Carter also coexisted with large Democratic majorities,

yet Kennedy vetoed 21 bills during his short presidency, Johnson vetoed 30 and Carter vetoed 31.

The truth is that there is nothing to stop Mr. Bush from wielding his veto -- witness the fact that the administration threatened Friday to veto a defense bill if, among other potential offenses, it contained language outlawing cruel and inhuman treatment of foreign detainees. But while Mr. Bush cares fervently, and scandalously, about the imperative of keeping inhumane practices legal, he does not care as much about waste of taxpayers' money. This is why he has not made vigorous use of his veto to restrain the growth of pork. This is why an anti-spending backlash that focuses only on Mr. DeLay is missing its main target.

The truth is we have a "big tent" party. Everyone is welcome who shares our wide ranging views on gov services, morals, education, accountability, etc. THEREFORE: It is the vote of and by these diverse ethnic and cultural groups that will win the elections. And win without moving to the center. Conservatives will not join us even if two thirds of their representatives are locked up for the fraud they commit.

When only some of us vote then we lose. We MUST get out our vote. And there are plenty of people who think and vote our way...when they vote.

Exactly ! Let every person look at what the Democrats/Liberals stand for. Let them look at what the Republicans/Conservatives stand for.

Let them make a decision based on which party has the most issues that they agree with.

DO NOT MOVE THE PARTY to the Center, in an attempt to court these people, you lose that old Left wing, which was what the party started on in the first place!

You don't like abortion? Fine, don't get one.

You don't agree Gays should have unions? Fine, mind your own business! How is your OWN union these days?

You don't like Gov. spending? HAHAHA look at what the Republicans are doing.

You don't like Taxes? Maybe you prefer this economy, no job, no security of Social services, to when Clinton was in, taxes were a little higher but there was prosperity and security !

How about that Pork the Repubs keep sticking into bills? You like that?

You like having this new breed, trying to stick Religion into every aspect of your life? How about when your Mother is lying there a vegetable, and you know she wants the tubes removed, and the Right says NO, keep the old shell pumping !

One SHOULD weigh carefully, which side they want, and then Support them. Not bitch or try to change them.

207
PamB on October 2, 2005 at 01:26 PM

I agree lhd, but I think the moderate Republicans are becoming disenfranchised as well. We could bring them over if we looked like we stood AGAINST those things that disenfranched the moderates in the first place. But we don't. The corporatists agree with the Republicans and ALSO work to disenfranchise the Rank and file Republican moderates, and the Rest of the party sound like Alan Colmes. We need more Paul Reikoffs and Paul Hacketts. And John Glenns.

General after general rose to his feet and raised his voice to shout at the way Iraq was being run and to express his fear of escalating war. "They were fools to break up our great army and form an army of thieves and criminals," said one senior officer. "They are traitors," added another.

The sense of hatred felt by these influential men, mostly Sunni Arabs, towards the new order installed by the US since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 is palpable and it bodes ill for Iraq.

Ex-army officers attack 'chaos' of Iraqi regime

236
Dawnelle on October 2, 2005 at 02:38 PM

Karen,

The cable company or whomever ran the cable used what's known as a splitter in the line where the two cables split to each TV (or they should have). If they didn't use a good brand splitter here, or if the cables shield (the braided wire on the outside under the rubber) has lost it's ground, radio frequency interferance can cause this from the cordless phone portion. If this keeps up, you might change the splitter or you might get whats known as a toroid choke and put on the cable of the one set right where it goes in the one TV. This toroid is availabe at Radio Shack. Really it'd not technically a toroid as that's round and it is rectangular. Anyhow this thing is rectangular and hollow in the middle. It snaps apart so you can get the cable inside it. What you do is wrap the cable around one portion of it several times, then snap it back together. This is used to block unwanted RF out of a TV set. You may try to move the phone part away from the modem etc by using a longer connection cord to as something there could be causing this where everything is too close together. Hope this helps!

I had an email from Burnsey this am and he asked me to share it with the blog. He has gained back some weight and is starting to feel better. However, due to some other problems that his doctors can't figure out, he is having a spinal tap tomorrow and an EMG on Tuesday, which he is not looking forward to. 244
DanaForshey on October 2, 2005 at 05:21 PM

Cyn_NY,

I feel for him as I've had two EMG's and I will not have another, unless it's a life or death situation. When they start sticking needles down deep in your muscles and shocking you with them, that is not fun. I said after the last one I had on my legs that was it, no more. A spinal tap isn't any fun either! I've not had a tap per say but had a spinal block for some surgery. That about made me sick, and that as a man I hardly ever do. These doctors don't have to suffer through this themselves. If they did, maybe they'd think twice about ordering tests. That's like doctors treating you for pain who've never hurt or know nothing about it, they don't care. If it were'nt for the pain clinic I'm in, I'd be screwed!

245
Will_Matney on October 2, 2005 at 05:29 PM

The pain subject is something I'd like to see discussed. Since Bush and the GOP have been in office, they've sicked the DEA goons on doctor after doctor. Now dont get me wrong, some deserve it but a majority dont. These christian coalition folks who are prohibitionists, dont care if folks have medical problems and are in pain daily. Since Bush has been in the last six years, doctors are afraid to write both pain and nerve medicine to ones who need it. The pahrmacies I've found have been leting local sheriffs departments see files without a warrent because they're afraid of them harassing them, same with the DEA. Where did our human rights go, and where did compassion go for the ones who are hurting every day? Even the doctor who's over the pain clinic here, and backed by a hospital, is scared a lot of times to give out anything. The ones without a hospital backing them generally meet a quick death by the DEA. They only talk about the amount of narcotics a doctor writes but never tell of who the patients are or what's actually wrong with them!

246
Will_Matney on October 2, 2005 at 05:37 PM

Will, it never ceases to amaze me what we can learn on this blog. I had no idea that the EMG was so awful. Let's all send some positive energy to Burnsey.

Our government can't provide armor for soliders to fight a war George W. Bush started. So the soliders have to buy them and now the government will not reimburse them. This is a disgrace. I am in favor for a timetable to withdraw our troops from Iraq.Posted by americafirstdemocrat on October 2, 2005 at 09:46 AM

When our troops in Iraq first complained to Rumfailed about not having body armor, Man Coulter imediatly declared they were nothing but "a bunch of whiners". That's how the Right Wing Haters feel about our troops. If they don't want to die needlessly, they're "a bunch of whiners".

WD on October 2, 2005 at 05:59 PM

I was just watching CNN Headlines news while eating, and they just had a segment on, where a female reporter was interviewing a group in Iraq.

Well, she then ends by saying "tell me some of the Good things you have done since you have been here".
One of the soldiers says, "well when we go out, we take goodie bags of candy for the kids". And then he said , "well, we helped get the kids back to school"

So THESE are the Noble causes Casey Sheehan died for! So Iraqi kids could have all the candy they want, and could go BACK into the schools that the US bombed!
Sick, Sick. And these soldiers were serious.
Like they had really been doing good.
A young kid home from iraq recently, at a party in his honor, was saying, We have been told to concentrate on the children. The adults all despise us, so work on the next generation and try and make them like America. ( Candy will do it, I guess !)

Families Lose Loved Ones Again -- in a Bureaucratic Mire

BATON ROUGE, La. — When he could finally leave his post guarding a nuclear power plant after Hurricane Katrina struck, Richard George Reysack III sped east of New Orleans to the flooded home of his 80-year-old father. Slogging through the muck, he found his father's corpse face-down in the hallway.

As devastating as that discovery was, at least Reysack had the body. Then even that was taken away. The authorities who moved the corpse to a temporary morgue not only won't return it to Reysack for burial, he said, they won't even confirm that they have it.

That article above makes me think of the Bush Crime Family's body dumping scandel.

Funeralgate

The Skeleton in Bush's Closet that won't go away.

Here's a new chapter in an old scandal involving a Bush contributor and longtime family friend, Robert Waltrip. This time it's the desecration of dead bodies, and George W. Bush is directly linked to this scandal (as is former FEMA director Joe Allbaugh, GW's Chief of Staff while governor of Texas). According to Fox News, Waltrip's company, a cemetery company called Service Corporation International (also known as Dignity Memorial) was "recycling" graves, removing the bodies that were there originally and throwing them in the woods to use the space to house new customers at two Jewish cemeteries in Florida.

Bush's connection to the story is that he was subpoenaed in 1999 but refused to testify in a lawsuit by an ousted Texas state employee as to what his involvement was in halting an investigation into SCI's embalming practices, among other things.
This was a big Texas scandal for our president at the time, but as you will learn from this Washington Post article dated August 31, 1999, a Texas judge put everything right for then-governor Bush, just in time to campaign for the Presidency.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 - Federal auditors said on Friday that the Bush administration violated the law by buying favorable news coverage of President Bush's education policies, by making payments to the conservative commentator Armstrong Williams and by hiring a public relations company to analyze media perceptions of the Republican Party.

In a blistering report, the investigators, from the Government Accountability Office, said the administration had disseminated "covert propaganda" in the United States, in violation of a statutory ban.

258
Chuck on October 2, 2005 at 07:12 PM

Cyn_NY,

Yup, an EMG is a test for the nerves. They insert a needle about two inches long down deep into the muscle close to a nerve. They then apply an electric shock through the needle and watch the reflex action. They also can here the muscle action through a speaker as the nerve impulses cause a sound where it's electrical. I had the needle stuck in my legs from my heel all up my leg, the hip, and to the main lower back. They did this about every siz inches or so up the leg. All this time the doctors saying try to relax. Yea boy, relax my ass!

Source to Stephanopoulos: President Bush Directly Involved In Leak Scandal
Near the end of a round table discussion on ABC’s This Week, George Stephanopoulos dropped this bomb:

Definitely a political problem but I wonder, George Will, do you think it’s a manageable one for the White House especially if we don’t know whether Fitzgerald is going to write a report or have indictments but if he is able to show as a source close to this told me this week, that President Bush and Vice President Cheney were actually involved in some of these discussions.

This would explain why Bush spent more than an hour answering questions from special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. It would also fundamentally change the dynamics of the scandal. President Bush could no longer claim he was merely a bystander who wants to “get to the bottom of it.” As Stephanopoulos notes, if Bush played a direct role it could make this scandal completely unmanageable.

Pam, I watched 48hours on TV lastnight and they said that BTK serial killer got his start when he got sexualy aroused when his grandparents killed amimals on the farm. That's how that guy Ed Gein got his start. Both these guys practised on animals as kids before they graduated to humans. Junior liked to "blowup frogs" as a boy and I have no doubt he gets "sexualy aroused" by humans getting blown up today. I saw on TV with my own eyes the day he ordered the "pearl harbor sneak attack" on Saddam how he declared with glee like a little kid, "I THINK WE GOT HIM!!!"

GOP's Unified Front Is Reduced to a Veneer

Those in Congress are increasingly inclined to openly disagree with Bush -- and each other.

WASHINGTON — In the disciplined world of George W. Bush's presidency, Republicans for years have shunned open criticism of the White House, fearful of a call to the woodshed from an administration that prizes loyalty.

So it was a striking departure when Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania — a high-ranking party official and a stalwart Bush ally — recently lambasted the administration's handling of this year's Social Security debate. It was even more striking that his office e-mailed the news far and wide with a subject line boasting: "Santorum takes Bush to task over Social Security strategy."

That was an emblem of the wobbly state of what was a cornerstone of Bush's first-term accomplishments: the confident, nearly lock-step unity of his party in Congress.

Now, every day seems to bring a new brawl among Republicans as divisions between factions proliferate.

A revolt by hard-line conservatives last week helped torpedo the selection of a more moderate Republican to temporarily replace indicted Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) as majority leader. A power struggle over a long-term successor is likely to follow.

Source to Stephanopoulos: President Bush Directly Involved In Leak Scandal

Hi Cyn

Of course Bush and Cheney were involved in this leak. Only those childishly naive would not know it. #1- How to pay back Wilson, and #2-How to send a message to every other intelligence, military, etc that they better not cross them.

Only problem, this magic circle in the White House have each other's back so closely, that they will go down themselves, rather than expose them.

Chuck,

Your in the same boat as me then. I broke my back at L2, it was a compression fracture. My legs contracted at the knees over not getting therapy when I should have. I never was able to set up past say a 15 degree angle for 6 months+. They had to pull me up in the bed say 3-4 times a day, I barley could turn on my side mostly laying flat of my back all that time.

My biggest problem was waking up in the middle of the night with back pain after the pain meds wore off. I take Ultram now and Percocet if I really need it. However, the pain doc I think about cured my back. There's a shot you take in the muscles and ligaments called Serapin. You ought to check into that as it sure helped me a huge amount. It's been months since that injection(s) and I dont wake up in pain like I did.

I am also starting to believe that more of the people I admire have DIED in the bush years, than in any previous administration. Is that true for anyone else? I don't mean in natural disasters either.

However, check this out:
Neo-Cons for a "Strong Europe"
By Pascal Riche | bio
From: Foreign Affairs
Here is a little scoop for TPMCafé: Bill Kristol, Robert Kagan, Gary Schmitt and other members of PNAC (the Project for a New American Century) are creating a new club called “Committee for a Strong Europe.” They just began inviting politicians and pundits from both side of the Atlantic to join. The honorary chairmen will be the former Spanish prime minister José Maria Aznar and Senator John McCain.

By “Strong Europe”, of course, they don’t mean “A Europe in which governments would be strong enough to say no to any crazy American military invasion plan,” but the statement of principle of the committee is so broadly crafted than many people could sign it. The purpose is to promote democracy, to have a stronger economy, to keep confidence in our values, etc.

However, knowing where this statement comes from, when I read “We believe both the United States and Europe should invest adequately in their armed forces so as to have strong militaries capable of serving in a wide variety of missions around the world”, I can’t help but hear a little whispering voice adding: “it’s especially true for you, you goddamn tight-fisted European wimps.

Man, I feel for you Will, cos I know that pain. Been through all of those pain meds. I've got L3-L4, L-4-L5, L5-S1 DDD with nearly complete disintegration. Facet arthropathy through entire back. Spondyliosis and stenosis with facet imbrication. I've had medial branch neurotomies twice and am about to go through them again starting in six days. I'm looking hard at replacement surgery, but they will have to drag me into that one.

Pam, that's how they set it up, so the "underlings" take the fall. Reagan did that in Iran-Contra and Nixon was doing it in Watergate. That book All the Presidents Men tells all about it. All the Republican administrations are setup to work that way. We'll have to see if they can pull it off.

Not necessarily mysterious causes, taken individually, but if 400 people YOU knew died from old age, or pneumonia, or scurvy, or heart attacks, or strokes, or complications from Krones... every year from 2001 on ,(exaggeration for effect) while prior to 2001 only one or two died each year, that would seem significant, right?

This is a post I posted to another thread a while ago, the one on Democrats volunteering in the Hurricane . Their site is a perfect reflection of their hard, uncaring attitudes.

Speaking of Bush and the RNC, a trip to the RNC website is quite a different experience from visiting the DNC site.

There is not ONE single Hurricane related story or request for help/aid.

The site consists of articles doing nothing more than Bashing Democrats! (And they like to call US the hateful party???)

And the emphasis on everyone trying to sign up more and more Republicans is embarassing. Like some kind of cult, where the ultimate goal is Number of members.

Also, I made a little trip to my own State of CT RNC site via the main one. Interesting to Note, the Chairwoman for the Party, one Jo McKenzie, not only was Gov.Rowland's #1 aide, and now he is in Prison, but the paper reported just this week, that she is being investigated as taking bribes and money for contracts, also! this shows the caliber of people that the Republicans are !!! Corrupt right down to the little man!

This is awful! I can't believe this happened. For any of you NY'ers that have ever taken a boat in Lake George, you know Lake George is a calm lake and today was a beautiful day in the Adirondacks. No wind, warm weather and the boats go slowly along the shore line.

Twenty-one people from a senior citizens tour group were killed on Sunday when a small tour boat capsized after it hit the wake from a larger boat on Lake George in upstate New York, police said.

The 40-foot (12-metre)-long, glass-enclosed Ethan Allen, operated by Shoreline Cruises, was carrying 50 passengers and crew when it capsized on Lake George, a resort area some 200 miles north of New York City at about 3 p.m. (1900 GMT), Warren County Sheriff Larry Cleveland told a news conference.

Most if not all of the tourists were from Canada, although eyewitnesses told local media some might have been from Michigan. No identities were released.

Witnesses and authorities said the boat was making a left turn when the it hit the wake of a larger boat, the Mohican, operated by Lake George Steamboat Co., which swamped and flipped the Ethan Allen sending the elderly passengers, who were on the upper deck and not wearing life jackets, into the water.

The captain survived the accident and was visibly shaken, witnesses said.

Local resident Frank Sause, who went to the lake after hearing emergency sirens, told CNN that several boats rushed to the accident scene in the lake to help rescue more than a dozen survivors who clung to the capsized boat for several minutes before it sank in the placid waters on a sunny afternoon. Fire and other rescue teams were on the scene within minutes to pull the elderly tourists out of the water.

Some witnesses reported seeing some smoke coming from the boat just before it sank by the stern.

"That's my wife, she's dead," Sause quoted one elderly survivor as saying as he was brought to shore. A temporary morgue was set up at a nearby campground, and bodies lay on the ground under white covers.

Media reports said the Ethan Allen was about 50 feet to 100 feet from shore when the accident happened. The injured were taken to a hospital in Glens Falls, the Glens Falls Post Star reported on its Web site.

Several local residents said the tour boat company had a good reputation with no known serious accidents and that nothing of the sort had occurred on the popular lake in memory.

"It is a tragedy and it's very unfortunate," Shoreline owner Jim Quirk told the Post Star as he paced up and down the lakeside walkway near his business.

Cleveland said all 29 people who survived the accident had been accounted for and the operation had been changed from a rescue to a recovery.

285
Chuck on October 2, 2005 at 07:58 PM

Chuck,

Same with me on surgery, that's a last resort. I have a doctor here who is a close friend and a surgeon. He told me that after you have the first back surgery, it never gets better. If they do more, it gets worse. Then your on strong pain meds all the time. The docs pass you from one to another over it until none will give you anything for pain. That is the jest of what he said.

Actually, mine was over osteoperosis. I had something go worng with my hormonal system where it knocked my immune system down. It all started with pneumonia, then the back while I was just getting over that. They said whatever it was acted like I had been taking steroids for a long time which I hadn't. They never did make a diagnosis to what happened. I think I was poisoned from some of the chemicals I used in my machine shop I had. I built fabrication machinery and had both metal working and electrical chemicals all over the place. This hit me right after I'd closed the shop. Keep in mind I'm only 40 with osteoperosis! Right now, my left shoulder has been hurting for around 2-3 months. First they said they thought I'd just sprained it but it didn't heal up. They ran an MRI about a week back and found a fracture so I'm nursing it now.

To get back to my original post above, if the republicans had there way, I wouldn't get anything for pain. I think they'd like to ban every narcotic whether it's legal or illegal.

A comment I wrote to the PBS Washington Week Blog today about the
racist Bill Bennett comments.

--------------------------------------------------

If Republicans want to know why they can't get African-Americans to vote for them instead of Democrats, Bill Bennett just showed you one
of the reasons why: The pervasive racism in the GOP.

African-Americans are a lot savvier than conservatives give us credit for. The GOP pandering to racists and the Dixiecrats has been a key component in their rise to power since 1964 and when you hear on the news that a politician has made a racist statement that gets them in
hot water, you can bet the farm that the person will be a Republican.

Where is the outrage from the GOP leadership? Ken Mehlman has been crisscrossing the country meeting with any African-American group that will take him over the last few months trying to convince us
that they have changed, and I have yet to hear him make a statement condemning those despicable remarks. Then again, I shouldn't be surprised with the deafening silence coming from the White House, the Republicans on Capitol Hill and GOP headquarters.

Kanye West was wrong. It's the ENTIRE GOP that doesn't like Black people, and they consistently show it in their words, deeds and
legislative priorities their contempt for 13% of the population.

My grandfather- the man I most looked up to in life (rest his soul), suffered horribly. He had five discs completely gone in his back along with a crushed right leg (a boulder fell from a cliff and landed on his car while he was driving home when he was 26 years old). I never knew him when he wasn't in severe pain and he always had a horrible limp & I saw tears running down his face many mornings in his kitchen while he drank coffee, when I was just little and spent the summers with him & my grandmother.

I'll never forget it. I didn't realize (at that time) what he was going through. He was always a great Grandpa to me & my brothers. It's how I get through. I figure if he was tough enough to take that, I can take anything.

Well you have to figure, I guess they'll have to keep them around as I'd about bet more than Limbaugh are additcs!

In my case, and I'd about bet Chuck will agree, we dont crave pain meds and wouldn't take then if we didn't have to. We need them for our illness. But you have ones like Limbaugh who instead of getting off the stuff or weaning himself down to the least drug he could take, he stayed on the high doses and then got higher as the tolerance built up. He was busted and rightly so but did we see anyone go after him for illegally obtaining those drugs? Did he loose his job over it like other folks do? Nope, the DEA never had a question, neither did his local law inforcement as far as I can find. He also had a job when he got dried out. However, the DEA is watching the doctors here in the US with an eagle eye, and doing things against our rights in investagations like looking at patient records with out a court order or a warrent! They have only been doing this since Bush came in office and he had Ashcroft to start it. I remember Ashcroft making a big brag about doing it on TV one day. That's one bastard I'm glad to see gone, I just wish the rest of them was.

John Roberts Rejects Meeting with

(Washington, D.C.)- U.S. Rep. Melvin L. In a letter to Judge Roberts dated August 25, 2005, Chairman Watt and Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton, the Chair of the CBC’s Judicial Task Force, requested that Judge Roberts meet with them as the official representatives of the CBC. A copy of the letter is attached.

“The members of the CBC are especially disappointed that Judge Roberts would not meet with us because we viewed the meeting as a critically important opportunity to make an impartial assessment of him as a person and to talk to him about particular concerns we had about his record on issues of great importance to the African American community, including civil rights, justice, equality and affirmative action,” noted Chairman Watt. “We especially wanted to hear from him firsthand about the stance he has taken on affirmative action and about his efforts to limit the effectiveness of the Voting Rights Act when the Act was last renewed.”

Democrats:

Rep. Raum Emanuel, D-Ill., said in a statement, "At the very time our country yearns for national unity in the wake of hurricane Katrina, these comments reflect a spirit of hate and division."

Senator Demands Bennett Apology for Remark

Sen. Harry Reid Demands Former Education Secretary William Bennett Apologize for Radio Comment

WASHINGTON Sep 29, 2005 — Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and other Democrats on Thursday demanded that former Education Secretary William Bennett apologize for remarks on his radio program linking the crime rate and the abortion of black babies.

Bennett responded that the comments, made Wednesday on his "Morning in America" show, had been mischaracterized and that his point was that the idea of supporting abortion to reduce crime was "morally reprehensible."

The author of "The Book of Virtues," answering a caller's question, took issue with the hypothesis put forth in a recent book that one reason crime is down is that abortion is up.

"But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down," Bennett said.

He went on to call that "an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky."

On his show Thursday, the anti-abortion Bennett said he was "pointing out that abortion should not be opposed for economic reasons any more than racism … should be supported or opposed for economic reasons. Immoral policies are wrong because they are wrong, not because of an economic calculation."

Reid, D-Nev., said he was "appalled by Mr. Bennett's remarks" and called on him "to issue an immediate apology not only to African Americans but to the nation."

Rep. Raum Emanuel, D-Ill., said in a statement, "At the very time our country yearns for national unity in the wake of hurricane Katrina, these comments reflect a spirit of hate and division."

"Actions speak louder than words. The Republican Party's hollow rhetoric about reaching out to minority voters can't hide the fact that President Bush's failed leadership has driven more people onto the rolls of the uninsured, pushed more families into poverty, and driven down real workers' wages. Instead of finding solutions to the problems confronting American families, President Bush and his party have chosen a disastrous special interest-driven agenda highlighted by irresponsible tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, disastrous deficits, and a risky Social Security scheme that would undermine the promise of retirement security for African American seniors.

"Democrats know that we can do better by balancing the budget and getting the economy working for everyone so that American families don't have to choose between a bag of groceries and a gallon of gas."

Why? Hell, do a background check if they're that paranoid about sharing the reigns. It seems like a ridiculous control ploy, IMO.

361
Orangutan on October 2, 2005 at 11:59 PM

362
RoseZ on October 3, 2005 at 12:00 AM

Finally, I am not arguing that we "unilaterally disarm" in the face of Republican attacks, or bite our tongue when this Administration screws up. Whenever they are wrong, inept, or dishonest, we should say so clearly and repeatedly; and whenever they gear up their attack machine, we should respond quickly and forcefully. I am suggesting that the tone we take matters, and that truth, as best we know it, be the hallmark of our response.

This is an excellent plan, but the next step is getting the platform to present our response to the people.

We've a great "gameplan" to follow with all the corruption in GOP from the top on down but the spinning that they are willing to do hurts it. The GOP will say anything to discredit the Democrats right now. They say we're partisan, unpatriotic so on and so forth. I do feel the tide changing though. I think 2006 will be a great year. We'll take back Congress I think. Once we do that I think it's over for the Bush Crime Family. I think we'll grow the balls that we need to and will be able to take back this country and make it a great country again. Make it respected around the world. Sometimes I think we should hammer this point, and others I think just keep rolling on the path we are on so far because it is working. I'm interested to see what Patrick Fitzgerald has figured out about the depth of this administration's depravity.

Orangutan on October 3, 2005 at 12:21 AM

Dell, I understand your enthusiasm. I really do. I became a Dem in 2003, joined here as well, for the same reasons you state. But something is not right.

Oran, you know what's weird about this situation and the internet? The internet was one of the primary aspects of Howard Dean's grassroots efforts. It took off. He made it take off (or Joe Trippi). It was an integral part of Howard's campaign, and as far as I am concerned it was quite effective!!

Where is Howard now? Or at least his people? Is anyone overseeing the internet aspect of the political spectrum? Because I do know that is where they send myriad donation requests via email. I wouldn't give them $0.10 at this juncture.

The Dem party is supposed to be the party of the people. Yet, they are ignoring the people!! It's time to set things straight before I do something drastic like return to independent status.

Dell, you don't necessarily have to run for local office (sorry, Jacque, if you are reading!). Try to find out who is on your local dem committee. Ours is called Democratic Town Committee. They need people to do phone banks, offer rides to voters, sign postings, passing out fliers, etc. My son has done this over the past four years as a member of the Young Dems in his high school.

Also, do an internet search for meetups (I bet it is linked somewhere on this page as well). They hold local meetings all over the country where folks from the same locales gather and strategize and do things like writing letters to folks and LTE, etc. There's always plenty to do.

DPD, "little green footballs,"? That scares me, LOL!

You know, I've become a bit curious about how local elections are run as of late. We have an election for our town council in November (okay, and it's strange how the mayor is "picked" rather than elected)...

Hub and I were riding through town today on the way to our local ferry (it's an eating spot at the dock). Hub commented on how our dem signs should be a different color because they don't stand out. They are PALE blue -- VERY pale blue. In the next town, the signs were ROYAL blue and much bolder.

Hub, not realizing the colors of red and blue denote party affilliation suggested making the dem signs red, LOL! I had to explain it to him. Anyway, this small-town stuff isn't the same as state and fed elections that bring in lots of $$$ through donations, etc.

For all we know, some mayoral candidate's family members make decisions about things like sign colors and depend on some connection that might be able to give them free printing privileges or whatever. Just seems like a totally different animal, IMO.

It is sad.. I was like that for a bit. Never wanted to think critically or anything. That friend I talked about earlier always told me, "Dude you're not a Republican, you are a Democrat.. you just have to think for yourself for once." Everytime we talked politics and I thought about what I wanted instead of the Limbaughs and Fox News and that it was obvious I wasn't a Republican.

Thanks DPD; for the LGF link: Here's a good article that really puts into perspective what we knew all along, but are only beginning to realize about Palestine's future.

www.Democrats.org should have a link to all these websites that fight for a more progressive future.

That's a cool deal DeLLBerto. That friend was a cool friend to you on that. You will have to think for yourself as a Democrat, but you also have cool people like Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama to back you up on it too. Just different role models than Republicans have. And healthier and more honest too.

For over 15 years Flush has been telling his listeners "Don't read the Newspapers, they're too Libbrulll, I'll read them for you and tell you what they say"

So, the LAZy Pugs who have NEVER read a Paper in their lives have a built in excuse for being ignorant.

I had a friend who actually used that line on me, and I asked him how he KNOWS that ALL newspapers are Liberal if he never reads them, and he said he didn't have to read them, cuz Rush is saving him from Liberal Propaganda.

That was BEFORE Clinton was even sworn in, yet he had all these talking points about how Clinton was going to do this, and that, and all these other things.

He could never back up word one, and when handed actual articles I cut out of SEVERAL Papers, he refused to read them, saying "Oh, anOTHER Liberal lie."

IDIOTS!!

I hear that. Even when I was "dumb" I liked Obama, Jerry Garcia (don't know what that has to do with anything), Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr. (one of my all time heroes) and JFK. I always thought these individuals were better then Rush, Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole.

He was AWOL from the list. Probably had a meeting with his (Liquor) Cabinet when the Poll was conducted.

Either that, or the Brits know he's an incompetent buffoon.

I know, I know. Ya live, ya learn. Republicanism is kind of like a cult. They don't want anyone to know the truth. Once you learn the truth, you leave the party. I don't know.. facts are facts whether they come from a "librulll" source or a conservative source, it's just that the conservative source always seems to omit key points. That is what I've learned by buying into the cult mindset of being a Republican.

I also think Nelson Mandela is a good choice for a would be wanne-world-leader-be. However, power like this would seemingly go to anybodies head and I'm not sure if even he could stay clean with that much power. If you know what I mean.

I think Mandella could stay clean.

Bush is mentally unstable and he scares the world shitless with his Bring the Rapture On antics.

He truly wants to be the catalyst for the end of the World, so he and his cronies can go to Heaven.

The man should be institutionalized.

US President George W Bush was placed 43, ranking below two of his fiercest adversaries on the world stage, Fidel Castro - 36th - and Hugo Chavez, 33rd.

But what about GW's daddy? Just when the GOP was mending its fences with Bill this little BBC dity comes out and snubs both junior and senior, oh well as they say.

Harriet Meirs is the nominee for Supreme Court Justice according to CSpan. She is not a judge and presently is counsel to the White House. Anhyone know anything about her?

And, Good Morning Viet Nam!

439
Cyn_NY on October 3, 2005 at 07:18 AM

Miers, who has never been a judge, was the first woman to serve as president of the Texas State Bar and the Dallas Bar Association.

Without a judicial record, it's difficult to know whether Miers would dramatically move the court to the right. She would fill the shoes of O'Connor, a swing voter on the court for years who has cast deciding votes on some affirmative action, abortion and death penalty cases.

Known for thoroughness and her low-profile, Miers is one of the first staff members to arrive at the White House in the morning and among the last to leave.

When Bush named her White House counsel in November 2004, the president described Miers as a lawyer with keen judgment and discerning intellect — "a trusted adviser on whom I have long relied for straightforward advice."

He also joked of Miers, "When it comes to a cross-examination, she can filet better than Mrs. Paul."

Miers has been leading the White House effort to help Bush choose nominees to the Supreme Court, so getting the nod herself duplicates a move that Bush made in 2000 when he tapped the man leading his search committee for a vice presidential running mate — Dick Cheney.

Conservatives call Miers a top-notch lawyer who understands the limited role they say judges should play in society. In nominating Miers, they say Bush is reaffirming his commitment to picking judges who will respect the letter of the law and not allow cultural or social trends sway their opinions.

"Harriet Miers is a top-notch lawyer who understands the limited role that judges play in our society," said Noel Francisco, former assistant White House counsel and deputy assistant attorney general during the Bush administration. "In nominating Ms. Miers, the president has reaffirmed his commitment to appointing judges who will respect the rule of law and not legislate from the bench."

With no record, liberals say the White House should be prepared for Miers to be peppered with questions during her Senate confirmation.

"Choosing somebody who is not a judge would put that much more of a premium on straight answers to questions because there would be that much less for senators and the public to go on when looking at such a nominee's judicial philosophy," says Elliot Mincberg, counsel with the liberal People for the American Way.

Formerly Bush's personal lawyer in Texas, Miers came with the president to the White House as his staff secretary, the person in charge of all the paperwork that crosses the Oval Office desk. Miers was promoted to deputy chief of staff in June 2003.

Miers, a single, soft-spoken woman who guards her personal privacy, has led a trailblazing career. She grew up in Dallas, earning her undergraduate and law degrees from Southern Methodist University.

As an attorney in Dallas, Miers became president in 1996 of Locke Purnell, Rain & Harrell a firm with more than 200 lawyers where she worked starting in 1972. After it merged a few years later, she became co-manager of Locke Liddell & Sapp.

When Bush was governor of Texas, she represented him in a case involving a fishing house. In 1995, he appointed her to a six-year term on the Texas Lottery Commission.

She also served as a member-at-large on the Dallas City Council. In 1992, she became the first women president of the Texas State Bar. She was the first woman of the Dallas Bar Association in 1985.
