Republican Priorities: Cut Taxes for the Rich
Right now, it's not clear exactly how much it will take to rebuild the Gulf States. We do know, however, that budget cuts were responsible for the under-funded levee projects in New Orleans.
Well, in the wake of the disaster, what does ultra-conservative activist Grover Norquist do? He writes a memo (PDF) suggesting that even after Katrina, now is the time to give a tax break to the wealthiest Americans.
Showing little sympathy, the RNC yesterday emailed their activists asking them not to help in the aftermath of Katrina, but to call their Senators about this very issue.
Frist has done his part and signaled that one of the very first actions the Senate will take after their long summer recess is to work on permanently repealing the estate tax.
As ThinkProgress points out:
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has "found that the estate tax encourages wealthy individuals to donate considerably more to charity, since estate tax liability is reduced through donations made both during life and at death." If there were no estate tax in 2000, for example, "charitable donations would have been between $13 billion to $25 billion lower than they actually were."
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said in response:
I am surprised at the Republican leadership's insensitivity toward the events of the last week. With thousands presumed dead after Hurricane Katrina and families uprooted all along the Gulf Coast, giving tax breaks to millionaires should be the last thing on the Senate's agenda. I understand that the Senate shouldn't grind to a halt as a result of Hurricane Katrina, but there are issues that are of much greater importance both to the people directly affected by the hurricane as well as the nation as a whole than estate tax repeal. This shouldn't even be a choice. Families have been torn apart and homes have been washed in four states. These victims deserve the Senate's time, not the handful of millionaires repealing the Estate Tax will affect. I once again urge Senator Frist to reconsider his decision. Gulf Coast families are counting on us. They are suffering, and they have no where else to turn. We owe it to them to make their safety and survival our top priority, and we should give them nothing less. Regardless of how one feels about the estate tax, we should all be able to agree that the Senate's attention should be on the victims of this crisis.
After a week of a down-right confusing response to one of the worst disasters this country has ever seen, is this where their priorities lie?

Greg Palast asks: Where is our Huey Long?
http://www.gregpalast.com/detail.cfm?artid=453&row=0
Personally, I think his name is probably Howard Dean.
... click my name for the Wikipedia entry on Long.
Dean can be our Long, without the corruption.
Friends, do not think for one minute that there won't be Dems supporting this atrocious repeal!! According to Sense of the Senate Amerndment from 2002 these Democrat Senators are on record as SUPPORTING a repeal of the Estate (death) tax:
Baucus (MT)
Bayh (IN)
Feinstein (CA)
Johnson (SD)
LANDRIEU (LA)
Lincoln (AR)
Nelson (FL)
Nelson (NE)
Wyden (OR)
also, Salazar and Pryor are not on record but WILL LIKELY VOTE TO REPEAL. Republicans who are against the repeal are Chafee and McCain. But WHO KNOWS? Republicans are also targeting Voinovich. I cannot stress the importance of a united Democrat stronghold in voting NO to this legislation. PLEASE call, email, both to WHOEVER you senators are regardless and tell them NO Repeal or abolishment! also, give them a piece of your mind about scheduling and voting to enable the rich even more after one of America's worst catstrophes EVER!!!
This is the final proof of the utter stupidity and incometence of the Bush Administration and thier moronic leader. George Bush has had his head up his ass ever since he was 16 years old, and now it's so far up their the "Jaws Of Life" couldn't get it out.
The failure of the Federal Govt. to help it's own people, is a sickening example of just how callous and incompetent Republicans and George Bush really are.
If it hadn't been for the dismantling of Clinton-era wetlands rules to pay off Shrubco supporters, the levees wouldn't have broken. But hell, how do black corpses in New Orleans stack up against developers with campaign cash? These people are murderers.
I've got a question about this--why exactly is it such a bad thing for my family NOT to get everything I will to them in assets, property, etc.? I earned it, so why shouldn't I give it to anyone I want?
why help the poor? the democrats lash out at anyone who wants to teach intelligent design. So if evolution is what they believe in then this is just the survival of the fittest. People who are not poor are more fit to survive by your own teachings. As someone who believes in intelligent design it is our moral responsibility to GOD to help these people.
The way that Bush has failed to respond to the hurricane damage is just another example of how incompetent and cold he really is. Even Hugo Chavez (who Bush's buddy Pat Robertson thinks we should assassinate) is offering to give aid. Bush ought to be ashamed of himself and his political party.
Republicans' Homeland Security Policy
(from www.gop.com)
Homeland Security
--President Bush has nearly tripled homeland security discretionary funding.
--More than $18 billion has been awarded to state and local governments to protect the homeland.
--The Bush Administration developed a comprehensive National Strategy for Homeland Security, focused on six key areas: intelligence and warning; border and transportation security; domestic counterterrorism; protecting critical infrastructure; defending against catastrophic threats; and emergency preparedness and response.
--For the first time, the President has made countering and investigating terrorist activity the number one priority for both law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The Bush Administration has transformed the FBI into an agency whose primary mission is to prevent terrorist attacks and increased its budget by 60 percent.
---------------------
As you can clearly see, though Bush has "tripled" the budget of Homeland Security, it is subject to "discretionary" spending -- in other words, at the "discretion" of the president and Secretary Chertoff:
"the president has made countering...terrorist activity the number one priority..."
So little, if any, of the "$18 billion" allocated to Homeland Security to "focus on...defending catastrophic threats; emergency preparedness and response; and protecting critical infrastructure..." was used for this purpose, but only instead countering terrorism, and still, there has not been a terrorist attack on the US since 9/11.
But now that we really needed the government to have provided this critical protection and disaster contingency plan, and it has failed to give it to us (especially after we paid for it), we wonder what other outstanding expenditures stick out on the government balance sheet that are siphoning away vital Homeland Security funds. Hmmm...
WAR:
1) IRAQ -- $300 billion; 1886 sons and daughters dead.
2) Body Armor for Troops -- (Mission Accomplished; armor no longer necessary)
and the rich shall inherit the earth?
Got news for all you intelligent designers and others who think you don't have to share the wealth with the less fortunate...there's going to be a final accounting for those who don't heed the word of God. Hold on to your pocketbooks and find yourself outside looking in on Judgement Day. The final estate tax will be paid by those who didn't cough it up when it was needed for those in distress and dismay.
It seems that the Republicans are hell bent on damning their souls. WE should give all we can from our meager savings to help the victims of Katrina, but THEY earned their money and can give it to whomever they want? You poor, unfortunate souls. By all means hold on to your money; it should give your family great joy to see you go sooner not later.
I think it's a disgrace how slow the Bush administration is taking to respond to the tragedy of hurricane Katrina and also how nothing is being done or said to these scumbag oil companies/gas stations who are price stealing from the American public. I think it's disgusting how these gas stations are taking advantage of a horrible tragedy and how President Bush is allowing it. The time is now for all Democrats to come against the Bush administration and force these greedy oil companies to stop stealing from us. Oil on the market was slightly down and oil is being released from the federal government yet these scumbag oil companies continue to raise the prices. In southern CT alone the price has been jacked up between $3.39 - $3.63 and I hear in some parts of the country it's even worse. Why hasn't a cap been issued to these gas stations? Why aren't people in office condemning it? Why aren't fines being issued to these money hungry oil companies? They wave their fake flags and pretend they love America yet what these oil companies are really doing is very UN-AMERICAN, they are taking advantage of a terrible situation, people have had to cut back on buying basic needs. When does it end? Why have Democrats allowed it to go this far without making a big stink out of it to Bush? Instead I see TV commericals about judge Roberts. I don't care about judge Roberts I want something done to make fuel more affordable!!! Get our troops out of Iraq now and help the people in need over hurricane Katrina. It's time to demand an end to this illegal war now and deal with real issues at home! President Bush should be impeached in my opinion he is the worse President we ever had!
You wonder why. The riots that are happing in the Gulf States are similar to what is happening in Iraq. Where is Cheny? How come minorities are the ones suffering the most? I don’t care if you are a republican. This is the opportunity where your leader should step in and show us why he was elected, but you know what? The complaints are getting louder, people are getting more angry, and fingers are starting to point to the republican government. With all of this happening, the administration is ready to take action and magically real progress is being made. Progress after 5 DAYS “…the results are unacceptable…” Bush. No Mr. President your timing for taking action, your assurance of this country, and response is unacceptable. I for one am tired of Bush… he took too long to respond to 9/11, his policy is not helping improve lives of many Americans, his policy is not making a stronger military, he took too long to respond to the tsunami, and now he just took too long to respond to the victims. Listen to what the president said this afternoon, right after he said, “unacceptable results.” He answered a reporter saying that “the results in Mississippi were acceptable,” but he then criticized the progress in New Orleans; however it’s with security that he has a problem with not the over all progress. The Bush administration is not speaking for any of you. None of you… how many times something wrong happens before we hold this government accountable? HOW LONG ???!!!!
What a sad, sad day for this country. For the entire world to witness how we treat our poor with such utter neglect, disrespect and lack of compassion is simply disgusting. This is the true face of America. "Come, bring us your tired, your hungry, your poor so we can through them in the dirtiest corner, take their jobs, fill our jails, hire whites to build and run them, and smile while doing so".
Now in America, your worth is based on your worth. Money is power, period. Did you now that in all the chaos today in New Orleans, they stopped the buses for a few hours that were picking up those thousands of poor, hungry, sick, tired African Americans in order to evacuate 700 white people from an upscale hotel? Oh, boy!!!
My fellow Americans, I am a white male who is so ashamed, so sickened and embarrassed by the actions of his fellow Caucasian Americans. Katrina has offered a clear visual of the effects of institutionalized Racism. The white, powerful majority has fearlessly shown their wings, flapping them in our faces. They knew this storm was coming at least 4 days before it hit. They new how devastated it would be. They new that there were ten's of thousands of poor, BLACK residents who would be at serious risk because of their lack of mobility. It took 5 days after the catastrophic storm to get substantial basic necessities to these people. Absolutely pathetic!! George Bush was on vacation throughout all of this, you know that right?
This is the face of Republican Capitalism my friends. The poor are expendable, the white folk are commendable. When will it change? When will we acknowledge the fact that the condition of the African American community is in such turmoil that it should be considered a national emergency? When do we take care of these Americans who have given there ancestors blood to help build this country? When do we get our Democrats into office so we can give incentives to companies to keep their jobs here, in this country, and not go overseas; providing more jobs to these low social-economic areas? When do we start to repair the families, the schools, the self-esteem, the lives of these most impoverished people? When does our government accept responsibility for this atrocity? When do we take down this greedy, self-centered, unholy, republican administration that enforces the separation of people based on their monetary value and skin color?
I am still devastated by the 2000 election robbery and the 2004 election farce. These are two gapping wounds that will just not heal because of the salt that the present administration perpetually dumps in them. Katrina confirms just how narcissistic and racist our Republican dominated government really is.
The same Grover Norquist who cozied up to Islamicists, even after 9/11? Why the Bush administration is not called on why they keep a man who works closely with the enemy making policy decisions, is beyond me.
However, the real tragedy is that Republican ideology is intact, including unilateralism. over twenty nations and two organizations offered to help out with humanitarian aid, but President Bush turned down every single one of them and said 'we can handle it ourselves.' Aside from the obvious fact that we haven't, WHO DOES GEORGE W. BUSH THINK HE IS to presume to speak for the people who are dying of thirst, hunger and disease, and turn away assistance. The man's arrogance is breathtaking, and people are dying because of it.
And reading the memo, we see the old argument that tax cuts produce prosperity.
If that were true, given the size of the Bush 2001 tax cut, we should be living in a time of unparalleled prosperity. NOT.
And, conversely, after the record 1993 tax increase, we should have had a horrible recession. Also, NOT.
And as far as government revenues are concerned (because it will certainly take a lot of them to rebuild the Gulf Coast region), the tax cuts, predictably have produced enormous deficits, just as the tax increase produced a surplus.
speaking of RICH and TAX CUTS I wanted to get this in befor the rush the insurance companys with the huricane that just hit will want to raise their rates again they should not be given the chance the reason you ask?that is simple they have been getting money for insurance for many many years they are in buisness and a riskey one at that they took the gamble and now they must pay.if they squandered their money instead of makeing sure they had enough to cover the property that was lost that is their fault if they had done it right they had all those years to put away the moneys to cover the loss and then the extra would have been their profit.to make people pay 3 times for the same coverage is wrong
We have to wonder if Grover Norquist, famous for wanting to drown government in a bathtub is happy now that one of our major cities has been drowned.
The Republicans asked for it and they got it, with a little help from their friends at Halliburton and all the other contractors making a bundle off the war in Iraq.
I have been a Dem all of my life, I have been a county chairperson. And I am writing this with deep concern for the Democratic Party.
Where are you? Are you going to hide, hoping that Bush will go down in flames over the poor handling of the Gulf disaster?
I want to see my party standing strong with the people of New Orleans and other coastal communities that now look like a war zone. Is the best we can do if tell folks to send money to the Red Cross?
Hiding and tattling at this moment in time is a waste of time. Most people don't understand the estate tax, let it go for the moment and make a visible stand up for these folks that are in a terrible mess.
Roll up your sleeves and get busy, at the sites hit. A picture says a thousand words.
There was according to this morning's papers a disaster plan for NO that had been tested in a simulated catastrophe. But then the Bushcovites shoved FEMA into a hidy hole under Homeland Security and dumped the people who had experience, for political cronies. What has running a horse club got to do with saving people in the face of a natural diaster? Yet that is the background of the director of FEMA who is in place because of Repug cronyism.
IMPEACH BUSH, CHENEY ET AL NOW!
You're thinking small.
I believe that now is the time to make a historic ideological shift in the public discourse about taxes.
The issue isn't just the estate tax, and the fact that Republicans this week were more interested in saving money for their cronies than saving lives -- though that is indeed a disgusting display of Republican indifference to suffering; it's that the entire conservative ideology of cutting taxes and shrinking government leaves Americans desperate for necessary services at critical times like this.
I think that Democrats need to take a strong stand on this because Americans in the Gulf Coast are asking, loudly and clearly, "where is our government?"
And the answer is that it has been intentionally and maliciously shrunk by conservative ideologues.
If you want another way to look at it, I'd say that *now* is the time to change the way taxes and government services are framed in the public discourse.
If you're interested, I've written more about this in this blog post: Grover Norquist, Americans for Tax Reform, and Hurricane Katrina

TatteredCoat you have summed in a paragraph why the "national disgrace" of the evacuation of New Orleans occured.
Enough said.
Now that the refugees have begun to be evacuated from the city and it seems to be moving with a pace.
Let us not forget 06 Elections with this "national disgrace". There was an entire ethnic group that in many ways left to die because of no Fed government intervention.
I personally will make sure that this atrocious behavior is dragged around like a blanket for the country to remember what was done to the citizens of New Orleans.
I guess there are two issues that I'll see to their public rememberance. The Hurricane Katrina disaster and the 2000 election ripoff in Florida with Katherine Harris's campaign. That issue will definitely be flung around.
You guys apparently don't know the half! I have the Republicans in my Darling family, which breaks my heart. They say things like, we(GOP) don't think you should give anyone a single thing? Let them take the money they spend on cigaretts, dance halls, sweets, and gambeling and save it and they would have enough money in case of a rainey day. Several in my family have relatives in Washington and they have said that Bush and his croneys get a good laugh with that attitude. It is like some(GOP)in this blog that say things like the troops volunteered & the ones stranded by the storm could have left when they were told too? They haven't the slightest idea how down trodden people can get when they don't have the neccessities? As far as I am concerned having a Republican attitude is like a cancer. It will evently get you?
I read the memo, but can't find the part where he asked the republicans NOT to help with the hurricane victims. Could one of you please point this part out?
If this tax cut is not filibustered by the Dems,
then I give up. There is no down side politically
unless you expect millionaires to vote dem. Yea right! This is such bull at a time where more taxes are needed not less.
rehnquist just passed away. certainly I send my regards to his family and I wish them well and that no further tragedy strikes them.
but since this is a political board I must say: this is so bad. i mean this is really bad. it's not enough that there's nothing really there to challenge roberts, but now bush has basically a blank check for his next nomination. he went mildly moderate with roberts but now he will no doubt go completely conservative with this one. man this is so bad.
and again, I can't emphasize enough how bad I feel for the whole rehnquist family. i realize that this will soon turn into a poltiical issue, but I really do feel for them. while I disagreed with a lot of his positions, he was indeed a rock on a court with its moments of instability. again i send nothing but my prayers and regards to his family and all those that admired him.
Unfortunatly, tax cuts for the rich seems to appeal to many of our Republican-lite senators. Where is Democratic leadership? Where is Dean ?
And on a different note, it is clear that the Republican leadership has been and continues to be a dismal failure. Earlier today, CNN reported that doctors are now seeing 150 patients per hour. Well this could have been greatly alleviated and many lives saved by accepting Castro's offer to send 1100 Cuban docs immediately to help out. Why are the Democrats not supporting this idea? It's the same old risk free strategy...no plan of our own, just hoping Bush and the GOP self-destruct. It's sometimes known as Republican-lite and sometimes the Kerry strategy. Will we ever learn to stand for something and stand up for it?
Time to set a few things straight: 1. the estate tax only effects those with estates over $1.3 million. After all, they really do need a hand from our government. Times are tough. Than there is the matter of DHS/FEMA actions. It's not as if no one knew about the huricane. The moment it crossed the Florida penisular it was a Cat. 1 and NHC announced that it would intesify. As soon as it aimed for the gulf coast as a Cat.3 it was time to act and fast. By Saturday everybody knew what what was coming and where. Where was the Pres.? Riding his bike with Lance at the ranch. Woopie! Come Sunday and it's a Cat.5 aimed right at N.O. Evacuation ordered and FEMA went into action, watching reruns of I Love Lucy. So the storm came, as we knew it would. It left a trail of death and distruction, as we knew it would. And then the Levees broke, just as we knew they would. Where was the Pres. Giving a speech in California about Social Security. Now you have to admit, that's the leadership we need. Oh, go soak your head, Russ, Bill, Art et.al. Elect democrats, let's change the culture of this country.
In order to change the culture of this country, we also have to change the culture of the Democrat Party. There are too many Republican-lites, who cater to the rich and big business and ignore the regular people who were the backbone for so long and now feel as they no longer have a home here. FDR was from a rich family too, but he was for the regular people and went all out to help them through the Depression. When WWII came along he set up the War Production Board to control prices and prevent profiteering. He wasn't afraid to tax the rich. Face it, you can't have a first world economy with a third world oligarchy. We need an FDR or a Harry Truman who was a regular person and wasn't afraid to tell it like it was. Democrats need to get back to their roots, or this country is down the tubes. And get rid of the DLC, every time a candidate follows their advice they loose the race.
Right On Butte, I totally dig what you are sayng. Two things:1. The ciuntry is already down the tubes(it can alwats be resusitated with some Democratic leadership with balls though). 2. What the heck is the DLC?
May God bless President Bush - it's not his fault that he is a smirking dimwit.
Perhaps the Democratic Party, which I am a part of, can actually dig an intelligent person out of the woodwork who can and wants to provide leadership to a country in bad need of intelligence and vision. I wish I could think of someone right now, but am having trouble. Can anyone name a handful of potential leaders? Please.
Considering that the estate-tax bill is up for hearings when Congress returns from its Labor Day Holiday, here is a good argument against it. Since almost all the people affected by the passing of the estate tax bill are white, shouldn't there be every possible effort made to block this bill and use the money saved from that, to rebuilding New Orleans and providing assistance to the families there, who are mostly black? Priorities and common sense should tell you that rich white folks need that money a lot less than poor black families. What is the Democratic Party doing about this? Here is a classic case for not allowing the Republicans to make inroads into the black/minority community.
The FIASCO in New Orleans is due to one thing: the Neocon belief that the government exists only to protect the property rights of the rich. To this end, the Neocons have completely trashed the ability of government, at all levels, to meet human needs. Neocons have no concept of the Common Good. THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY MUST CONTINUALLY POINT THIS OUT in the days to come. They must constantly, constantly point out the many failures of the Bush Administration and the Neocon agenda. AND at the same time, present a positive alternative. Where is Harry Reid? Where is Howard Dean? Where is Barbara Boxer? Where is Hillary Clinton?
Sure Cranky!
Everyone that's seen me post here should know my personal favorite by now: Senator Joe Biden of Delaware.
Visit his website at http://wwww.uniteourstates.com
I also like Hillary Clinton, John McCain, John Kerry (despite Bush's highly successful smear campaign), Bill Richardson, and others.
If you can't find good politicians anywhere, then you are spending too much time looking for problems with the neo-cons (and we all know that's unnecesary).
What we should be doing is finding good politicians, and making them better known in our communities. Go to Unite Our States, and see what you can do. Go to http://www.senate.gov and search through the archives. Get voting records, go to the senators' web sites, see what their policies are, and when you find a good senator, tell people about them. Write to the ones that aren't doing a good job and provide constructive criticism.
Just a few thoughts.
Where is the sense of moral outrage by the Democratic leadership over the mismanagement of this disaster? In fact, when will our leaders stand up and confront the Republicans for their gross and flagrant mismanagement of our country, the war in Iraq, the hemorraging of jobs overseas, the union busting by big business and government, the disappearing Middle Class, ad nauseum.
I think that we need to make an arrangement with the Humane Society to have the testicles of castrated pets shipped en mass to the Democratic leaders because, frankly, I doubt they have a set between them!
I am disgusted not only with the Big Brother Republicans, but with our party, who claims to be the party of social conscience, but who has yet to give voice to the continued beating down of those in our society who are least able to help themselves.
If those survivors had been rich white folks, there would have been National Guard up the yinyang a nanosecond after the levees broke. AND, how is it that everyone in the press corps and even Harry Conick Jr, managed to get into New Orleans a moment after this whole thing happened and yet the government couldn't figure out how to send one Hummer with food and water to people who were dying of thirst and hunger?
****IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING KATRINA****
After surfing the net for hours and pilfering others' clever ideas for monikers, my DOG AND CAT have jointly issued the four decrees below. They've commanded me to proclaim these edicts to the human race via this blog. BY ORDER OF MY DOG AND CAT, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY AND UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, ALL BLOGGERS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING:
1. KATRINA, NEW ORLEANS, FEMA
The city of New Orleans shall hereby be referred to as LAKE GEORGE. With a nod to Herbert Hoover, all Katrina relocation centers shall be referred to as BUSHVILLES. FEMA chief Michael Brown, an underachieving Republican crony whose main pre-BushCo career accomplishment involved getting fired from the International Arabian Horse Association, shall hereby be known as (per the dog) MUSTANG MIKE, MISMASTER OF DISASTER or (per the cat) BRONCO BROWN, MISMASTER OF DISASTER.
2. CHENEY AND RICE
Dick "Heart Attack" Cheney, the cyborg who supported the gross underfunding of New Orlean's flood control efforts, and then refused to leave his Wyoming vacation once the deluge began, shall hereby be known as DICK BANS DIKE. In tribute to Condi Rice's thousand-dollar shoe buying spree in New York City during the peak of the crisis, she will hereby be known as IMELDA RICE, STILETTO QUEEN, or NO SHOES, NO SERVICE, at your discretion.
3. BUSHIES
Reflecting a failed presidency and his colossal dereliction of duty this past week, the act of reflexively defending George W. Bush shall hereby be referred to as BUSH FLUFFING. Those who engage in same shall be deemed BUSH FLUFFERS. Should Bush hallucinate about "mandates" or "political capital," these will be known as FLUFFY BUSH MOMENTS.
4. GOP AND TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH
Rather than focusing on Katrina relief, congressional Republicans will soon fixate on eliminating the Estate Tax, a levy paid only by the wealthiest 1% of estates last year. This GOP giveaway to the rich shall be referred to as THE PARIS HILTON TAX CUT.
I will promptly relay any forthcoming edicts issued by my pets. Failure to comply may result in your furniture being scratched or peed on. BUSH LIKES NICKNAMES, SO LET'S MAKE THESE STICK BY REPEATING THEM IN FUTURE POSTS! My dog and cat thank you.
Hurricane Katrina cleanup – 3 immediate action items:
1. Michael Chertoff must be removed as head of the Department of Homeland Security along with Michael D. Brown as head of FEMA. The telling quote from Governor Blanco’s office – “We wanted soldiers, helicopters, food and water. They wanted to negotiate an organizational chart.” – demonstrates that the DHS under Chertoff is more concerned with reporting lines than effectiveness. Add to that Secretary Chertoff’s many dismissive remarks over the past week indicating that he is unable to anticipate truly massive catastrophes, whether natural or man-made.
2. The displacement of over a half million people separated from their employment and their regular health coverage (those who had it, that is), will greatly exacerbate the pressure on the U.S. health care system to manage those who are uninsured or underinsured for health care. Hospitals and doctors in host cities can provide charitable care for only a limited period of time; then they will need to receive payment to avoid being financially overwhelmed. Private sector health plans will not step up to the plate unless required to do so by law. Legislation must be introduced immediately requiring health plans to honor their obligations to displaced enrollees, wherever located and for as long as necessary. If this is not addressed right away, you will start hearing nightmarish anecdotes of health plan beneficiaries without adequate health care resources and tangled up in cruelly inhuman bureaucratic red tape all over the country.
3. Obviously the Democrats need to take back the Congress in 2006. However, a Democratic Congress dedicated to social justice can be thwarted by an overzealous right-wing Supreme Court, as we saw in the early days of the New Deal. This could make the next decade the era of the “Raw Deal.” President Bush will nominate partisans who will fight the use of Federal resources to assist the overburdened states and localities trying to rebuild, possibly for a generation. These next two Supreme Court nominees must be questioned closely to assure that brittle logic and a reflexive urge to limit Federal power will not interfere with the use of Federal resources to address catastrophic, continuing suffering that spreads across a dozen or more states.
Hey I apologize to the dems. Repugs Have posponed their Tax break for the wealthy in large part due to a huge relief bill the dems came up with working through labor day weekend. Now the repugs look sooo lame, they are now in full damage control. But this time its now working!
GREAT JOB!
it is time for the dem to get off of there BUTT!! and quit letting the gop get there talking point out first ant they BETTER not go along with this hearing with is a dog and pony show
