A Meeting in the Oval Office
Posted by on October 25, 2005 at 11:22 AM
We were invited to the Oval Office for a meeting last Saturday. No, hell hasn't frozen over, the Oval Office was in Mystic Lake, Minnesota. Glynn Crooks, vice chairman of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, invited us to meet with him and other Native American leaders at his home.
"Why have a meeting in a sterile hotel room when you can have it here - the Oval Office," the Vice Chairman told me.
The guy has recreated an exact replica of one of the most famous offices in the world and no detail has been left out - right down to the red "nuclear" phone on the desk.
The Governor told the leaders we need more Native Americans to run for office and spread their unique and traditions to State Houses across the country. There were Native Americans from eight different states represented.
It's the closest I've come to seeing the Oval Office, but in 2008 I expect to see the real one.

That's really awesome.
:D!!!
we need more Native Americans to run for office
I have the opportunity to actually support one, Jack Jackson Jr. who is running for Congress this year in my district (against a Republican who doesn't even live in the state, and essentially bought the seat three years ago).
Hey ELI!! That's exciting! I wish you all the best!! Don't be such a stranger on the blog either!! We miss you! :-)
What we need is for Governor Dean to saddle up and again and run for president.
Every day another elected Democratic shows us why we need Governor Dean. Sen. Schumer this weekend said that he would vote for the war again even knowing what he knows now about the lies about WMD's. Gee thanks, Chuckie.
If I put a picture of Diane Feinstein up against a sillouette of George Bush, would anybody see any overlap?
The DLC says our number one priority is security, and Senator Clinton shakes her pom poms.
Jesus Christ, this party has lost its reason for being.
Please, Howard, tear up your deal with devil and run again.
***DOWN WITH AL FROM, DOWN WITH THE DLC***
Al From, the Founder and CEO of the Democratic Leadership Council, the DLC, was on C-Span 2 this morning spouting his rhetoric to fool the "Working Class and the Poor".
I was glad to see that NONE of the callers were of the opinion that the Democratic Party needs Al From's , DLC for the leadership of the Democratic Party.
Al From, DLC Founder & CEO, was NOT democratically elected by the people in an election as required for leadership. Our elected leaders do not need an unelected declared leader leading them away from the best interest of the "Working Class and the Poor".
ALL democratically elected Congressmen and Congresswomen who need Al From's leadership to guide them in how to lead themselves for their own interests are not leaders of the people; but are allowing themselves to be led.
It is absolutely necessary that all Congressional members of the DLC be removed from any leadership positions as soon as possible. No DLC Member will be performing in the best interest of the "Working Class and the Poor" and will never format a plan of real help for the "Working Class and the Poor" as the DLC represents business, industry and government, which MUST be represented on the RIGHT, not the LEFT. The LEFT must stick with representing the "Working Class and the Poor".
Native Americans are members of the "Working Class and the Poor". I am excited about Governor Howard Dean recognizing Native Americans as members of the American Democracy. The Dean Democratic Division of the Democratic Party is the ONLY side of the Democratic Party that is really democratic.
Government worked much better for ALL the people before the DLC was allowed to be implemented. The DLC is against the "Working Class and the Poor". Down with the DLC and all members who represent the DLC.
I think blaming the DLC is the wrong answer. They are bringing new ideas to the table to counter President Bush and Republican claims that the Democrats "Dont have a plan".
This is a NATIONAL PARTY, you need a coalition to win!
Metro vs. Retro is a flawed and Republican-like in it's hatefullness. It's about division not national unity! It's a bad plan for the party.
We need a big tent to win. I dont agree with the DLC on "free trade" but on a host of other issues they are pretty strait. Quit being narrowminded and check out PPI.org and read some of their education and reform proposals.
Even Dr. Dean realizes we need "all hands on deck" to win, which he has showed by helping rural "red state" parties.
If you expect a Dem in Oklahoma to have the same beliefs as a Dem in California to be a "Real Democrat" then you might as well throw the 50 state strategy out the window!
***SUPPORT DNC against DLC & GOP Duopoly***
Along with Native Americans; Governor Howard Dean represents the "Working Class and the Poor" against the DLC and GOP "duopoly" that excludes political representation of the MAJORITY of the Body Politic, the "Working Class and the Poor".
SUPPORT Governor Howard Dean in his efforts as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, the DNC, to reform the Democratic Farmer Labor Party, the DFL; so that the DFL represents the majority population of the Body Politic, the "Working Class and the Poor".
Show your support of Governor Howard Dean by making monthly contributions to Governor Howard Dean's Democratic National Committee. A one-time donation of $25.00 will secure membership in the Democratic Party; and a continuing donation of $25.00/month will express your continuing support of Governor Howard Dean's Democratic National Committee and his efforts to reform the Democratic Farmer Labor Party, the DFL, to represent the interests of the MAJORITY POPULATION of the Body Politic, the Working Class and the Poor".em>
*******DLC is Pseudo LEADERSHIP*******
Much the same as U.S. Government Leadership is in the interests of the Native Nations, DLC Leadership is pseudo leadership of the DNC that is unwanted and unneeded by the legitimate and duly elected leader of the Democratic Farmer Labor Party, Governor Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, DNC.
The DLC is Republican LIGHT, a part of the GOP-DLC "duopoly" that diminished the DFL from "majority control" in the Government of the United States to "minority control", and chose to represent the Professional Class as a "New Class" contrary to the interests of the "Working Class and the Poor".
The services of the DLC are not required by the DFL and the DNC, or by the "Working Class and the Poor" that support Governor Howard Dean; and are NOT WELCOMED by duly elected leadership of the DFL and the DNC.
SUPPORT the ONE and ONLY LEADER of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY, Governor Howard Dean, Chairman of the DNC.
In the same way that the duly elected Chief of a Native Nation is elected, the leader of the Democratic Farmer Labor Party, DFL, is duly elected Chairman by the Democratic National Committee to be the legitimate leader.
The Democratic Leadership Council, the DLC, is not afilliated with either the DNC or the DFL. The DLC is a private organization apart from the DNC and DFL that is trying to assert itself as having leadership over the DNC and DFL without the authority of the membership of the DNC, the DFL.
The elected leadership of the members of the DNC is the ONLY legitimate LEADERSHIP of the DNC. Governor Howard Dean is the duly elected leader of the membership of the DNC as Chairman of the DNC.
Down with pseudo leadership of the DFL by the DLC. DLC efforts to illegitimately assert leadership over the DFL is unwanted by the DNC membership and unsolicited by the duly elected leader of the DNC, Governor Howard Dean.
The DLC Membership must keep their place subject to the membership of the DNC, or be replaced -- either represent the membership of the DNC and their duly elected leadership of the DNC, or expect that DLC membership will be replaced by the DNC membership and duly elected leadership of the DNC.
Support the only legitimate leader of the DFL, Governor Howard Dean, the duly elected Chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
BTW, The cost of becoming a card carrying member of the DNC is only $25.
How beautiful are the feet of them that PREACH the Gospel of peace. Let us do evil that good will come? Is the Bush Administration trying to bring about good by doing evil? What happened to those Children of Israel that tried this? I Pray and intreat you to pray God will defeat our Government in those things that are wrong and Bless our Government in those things that serve God's Purpose! But they have not all obeyed the Gospel. For as Elias Prophesied, Lord who hath believed our report? Let us all Study more of God's word and study less on War.
I'd like to see more opportunities for native Americans to share their heritage on television. When do we ever see them in regular programming?
pop,
have to disagree that Democratic Party must also have DLC in order to appeal to all people. This split in the party is what has caused the party to now find themselves in the minority. The DLC forced their ideas onto the party the last 2 elections and we lost as a result. I agree that a Democratic in Oklahoma may have some different ideas than one in CA, but by splitting our party to try and appeal to all makes no sense. For instance, in trying to appeal to OK and Alabama Democrats, myself in CT finds this DLC platform appalling. I do not want to go to the center. My 2 Senators and my congressman are both on the membership. Lieberman is one of them. He has gone from the year 2000 when he ran with Gore in only believing in one right wing issue - i.e. School vouchers, to Now voting with Republicans a good deal of the time. I do not like the fact that the DLC still wants to swill at the trough of Corporate and special interest, YET, they condemn Hollywood and Michael Moore. DLC members are all still Democrats who will not come out against the war. Clinton, Kerry, etc, will not say they were lied to, and this Invasion must end. This is a misguided idea of the DLC. And remember, we don't have the REpublicans splitting in two groups, to try and appeal to all states. You either believe in their platform or you don't.
I thoroughly believe the DLC should be dissolved. They should stand up for the Real Basic Democratic/Liberal platform. There is nothing wrong with it. Our image has been tarnished by the Republicans with their campaign to define us as anti-guns, anti-life, for gay marriage, Tax and spend, tree huggers, etc.
We cannot just vote against them , there are too many of them. They must be convinced to come back to the Real Democratic Party.

I would like to see Native American Tribe Leaders work with the tribe leaders in Iraq?
You ask why? Maybe they could unite those tribes like our lovely Tribal Leaders in America are united with each other. I heard some Ambassador talking and said when the Tribes learn to live together it will unite Iraq. What kind of Counselling have the Bush Administration offered for Peace? Or are they still believing Kill enough of them and the rest will come around?
oneforall, I think they would have a better chance of success in Afganistan, which is more of a tribal nation. Iraqiis live primarily in a modern, urban environment. They do belong to large clans, but don't live together.
But I think it's an interesting idea for Afganistan. Why not take advantage of an untapped resource in our own country and allow our native American leaders try to advance peace?
...and to think he might have been only...One-Yeeeeeee-Haaaaaaaw away from the real thing. I don't want to take any enjoyment out of his fantasy...just keep that sausage hidden.
I am one of those Native Americans you have so disingenously categorized as among the 'working class poor...', from the district Jack Jackson Jr. wishes to represent. The Democratic party has a long way to go if it feels it is worthy to represent the wishes of those it knows nothing of. To categorize all natives into such a category means you know nothing of any natives. Currently Mr. Renzi does an admiral job trying to represent all the people of District 1. While I pander to no one idealogical persona, I do believe the members of Native America deserve more than quick collective subjectification and easy to remember terminology. Many of the Navajo people make far more than the typical stereotypical poor Indian and wonder which, if any party can represent them. As I doubt the moderator of this forum will allow this to be posted, I welcome response from anyone that actually understands Native America to comment without stereotype or telling me what category I fit into.
