Breaking News: Cheney's 'Direct Involvement'
Posted by Joe Rospars on October 24, 2005 at 10:35 PMSerious, serious allegations this evening as the inquiry into the CIA leak that jeopardized national security in an attempt to cover-up lies about Iraq reaches the heart of the Bush White House:
I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, first learned about the C.I.A. officer at the heart of the leak investigation in a conversation with Mr. Cheney weeks before her identity became public in 2003, lawyers involved in the case said Monday. You really must read the whole thing.Notes of the previously undisclosed conversation between Mr. Libby and Mr. Cheney on June 12, 2003, appear to differ from Mr. Libby’s testimony to a federal grand jury that he initially learned about the C.I.A. officer, Valerie Wilson, from journalists, the lawyers said.
The notes, taken by Mr. Libby during the conversation, for the first time place Mr. Cheney in the middle of an effort by the White House to learn about Ms. Wilson’s husband, Joseph C. Wilson IV, who was questioning the administration’s handling of intelligence about Iraq’s nuclear program to justify the war.
Lawyers said the notes show that Mr. Cheney knew that Ms. Wilson worked at the C.I.A. more than a month before her identity was made public and her undercover status was disclosed in a syndicated column by Robert D. Novak on July 14, 2003.
Mr. Libby’s notes indicate that Mr. Cheney had gotten his information about Ms. Wilson from George J. Tenet, the director of central intelligence, in response to questions from the vice president about Mr. Wilson.

This is big. It doesn't mean elgal trouble neccesarily for the VP but DEFINITELY large political trouble. First, it means Libby did in fact lie under oath when saying he learned Plame's identity from a jorunalist, when in fact it was Cheney. If Cheney testified the same story as Libby he too could be in legal jeopardy, but I am not sure if he was under oath when he met with Fitzgerald.
Wait for the legal indictments either tommorow Wednesday or Thursday but then the Dems need to jump on this. At all times consider consistency with the Clinton case. We must say two things, 1. Perjury is always a serious charge, Clinton was guilty of it, and so are they.
2. Lying about sex and lying about sending our troops into war are completely different. Using the slogan, When Clinton lied, nobody died.

I agree, Scott. This is big. Cheney may be going down. Scotty-Dog McClellon is going to miss Turdblossom. He's repeating himself like an idiot. They're going to be exposed. Please, let it be soon. Merry Fitzmas! Good job on getting this up so quickly, guys. You rawk!!

We now know why Tenet got that Presidential Medal of Freedom. Cheney asked him for any information he had about Wilson that might make him look bad, and Tenet gave it to him. Did they consult with the entire Iraq Group first?
The whole Niger discredidation story was hatched between them? They decided that Plame must be outed to protect the WMD lies told at the UN -- the hell with the rest of her agency contacts in the field? Is that what was discussed on Air Force One?
And then Libbey (and Rove) were charged with getting it out. How many times has he lied for Cheney? How many times has Cheney asked him to lie?
Miller, Russert, and all the rest of Cheney's moles carried out their orders to make sure Wilson's mission was questioned...they still are doing it.
And Novak was the stooge who did the final dirty deed and then acted dumb to cover his own involvement.
Nice plan. Flawlessly executed by all the actors involved. It's a shame there was a war going on and undercover agents in the Middle East were put in jeopardy. They are our front line troops in the war on terror...and the Vice President of the United States decided some just might have to die so he could live another day without being outed himself.
I hope Mr. Russert is planing to devote a full hour next Sunday explaining his involvement. I really want to hear why he thought it was such a good idea to discredit Wilson and divert attention from the the fact that Saddam never had any WMDs...it was just a technicality after all. Who would have dreamed that he didn't?

Well a tight knit group of viscous folks must be singing... wonder who they are singing too...
Guess, they don't have another Miers to divert attention.
Not the left needs to re-spnond based on shared values and link w/ those that have similar values on the right ...

Bush and Cheney will escape because they were never required to testify to the grand jury so they couldnt have purjured themselves. Isnt that just great.

"House Democratic leaders have spent recent days devising a Caucus-wide plan to further highlight GOP ethical missteps and national security compromises, ROLL CALL will report in Tuesday editions, RAW STORY has learned. Excerpts:
Sources say House Democratic leaders have held several private meetings to shape their Members’ message if federal indictments are issued against senior White House adviser Karl Rove and Vice President Cheney’s chief of staff, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby. (snip)"
Keep is simple - BUSH LIED! BUSH LIED BUSH LIED!

I think we need to do more to keep the insanity of this party out in front of us and the persons that need to see it. My Flash animation, Sars Brand Bat In A Can, http://batinacan.com directly addresses the inept preparedness of this government for disasters. I do it with humor.

No Myrtle,
Until the grand jury is finished, we don't know if they'll indict for outing a CIA NOC, or if they'll use the broader Espionage Act, which should cover everything that Cheney, Libby, and Rove have done.
She was covert,(don't come in here with RNC talking points, monkey) and the conspirators didn't need to know her status to have broken the law.
Also intent is not part of any of the laws covering National Security, Intelligence agents or treason. If the act revealed the agents identity, or an operations identity, if they did for political payback, or to destroy the USA's intelligence gathering ability so we will lose against AL Queda, or just to get a better dinner reservation is not an issue.
Posted by JohnNei on October 25, 2005 at 10:10 AM
At the very least, Rove and Scooter Libby are going down! Cheney and Bush are in political hot water. For them to be found guilty means proving a larger conspiracy OR that they obstructed an investigation. The former is unlikely but the latter is possible.
Posted by rjsnj on October 25, 2005 at 10:40 AM
Cheney's troubles are beginning to remind me of the often heard "You're Gong Down", used in profesional wrestling circles. When it rains, it downright pours at the Bush Whitehouse it seems.
We might soon see a wholesale cleaning of house not seen since the Nixon Watergate administration, with indictments and resignations very soon.

I'll never understand why the reichwing trolls come here. I mean it's not like their boards where they can print anything they want; lie, half truth, smear or slime, and the readers will eat it up as Gospel truth.
I mean this is the Democratic board. We are the people who got an education and learned to THINK FOR OURSELVES!
So ya gotta wonder why they keep coming here to spread the obvious lies and character assassinations that are the hallmark of the GOP Talking Points slime machine?
I am afraid to get my hopes up that we will see high level government officials actually indicted for outing an undercover CIA agent in a malicious manner for poltiical gain which really should be a crime of high treason. You know? Twenty Years in Federal prison?
But I can hope it will come true and then watch as the entire rightwing scheme to lie, smear, and destroy good men and women's lives is unraveled. And the complete and total ownership of the repuglican party by Corporate America is revealed as well.

Has anyone in the American MSM interviewed any of the weapons inspectors lately? I'd like to hear again what they were telling all the world about not finding ANY evidence WMD in Iraq... as Bush hastily rushed American troops to Iraq.
Why the big haste? Why couldn't we wait another week or two before bombing Iraq back to the stone age? I believe the only things they were uncovering were big stockpiles of conventional weapons that Rumsfeld thought were not important enough to protect.
These were the same weapons dumps that were then looted by the insurgents and are now killing our troops and civilans all over Iraq....maybe all over the Middle East?
Maybe Mr. Fizgerald should be investigating the criminal negligence and incompetence by those in the White House in Iraq not just their coverup in the Plame affair. It's beeen repeated in New Orleans and the Gulf coast after Katrina. Someone has to see that those responsible are held accountable before it happens again.
Maybe Bush just needs a little push to start firing people. Time to call in Donald Trump?
Posted by SandyH on October 25, 2005 at 01:10 PM
Buzz, Cheney didn't testify under oath...so he's free as a bird. Neither did the birdbrain.
I suspect Scooter and Rove may be indicted for perjury and obstruction, but they will be hired as consultants by the White House even if they are forced to resign.
It's the coming trial that's the big thing. And the trolls know it and hate the thought of it.
Maybe we can get someone at the Supreme Court to send over Reinquest's old impeachment trial robe..you know the one with the gold stripes on it?

PlameGate
Oh the tangled webs politicians weave, Nixon had his Watergate, Bush Plamegate. Dirty political tricks of investigations, truth of prosecutors trickling public.
Secret gossiping of destroying character, passing secrets to liberal papers reporters, for then they can blame the liberal press. Conservatives then jumping up to defend the CIA.
Surely, some Democrat passed secret info. But sadly it is Bush’s secret inner circle, damage control for the White House aides, saying they was innocent of deceiving us.
How much more lies within the Iraq plan? How much deceit have they dealt America? Poker hand of marked cards of dishonesty, can they all take national security lie detector tests?
Character assassinations of McCain, others, Texas six shooting get down dirty politics, Judge Roy Bean style of American justice, Guantanamo dictating of international law.
Now it is time for the public media to arise, finding the truth within our secret government. Demanding our questions be answered in truth, for the weapon of mass destruction lies here. If lies are condoned in our constitutional values.
The more secret a politician becomes, the more they have to hide in deceit.

The Republican Dicks seem to be very adapt at getting caught. First we had Dick "I am not a crook" Nixon. Now we have Dick "I don't know who Wilson is" Cheney.
What happens if Cheney has to resign; who will run the country?
Maybe Junior has an opportunity to have Miers as his VP instead of as a nominee to the Supreme Court.
If the CIA leak opens Dick "curse word user on the Senate floor" Cheney up, could that be an entry into the energy committee that Cheney constituted outside the public view. And also his continued link with Halliburton and its relationship to the swindling son-of-halliburton!
I hope finally the mainstream media wakes up from its stupified fear of the radical right wing Fox News and Wall Street Journal!

Do you think they have talked Chaney and Tennant into taking the fall for the Bush's Legancy? Bush can't use Chaney like he can Rove and Chaney's Libby? Chaney want's to go back into Private Business as CEO. Tennant has already taken the fall for CIA bad information. When we all know Bush Adm. beefed it up. Well I hope and pray that the guilty will be punished through the letter of the Law and the innocent will have their good name restored, sooner rather than later.

Tenet says he didn't tell Cheney about Plame. This is very bad for Cheney because the only place he could have gotten it from now is from Powell. What makes it really bad is the fact that Powell showed Cheney a Classified Memorandum that stated Wilson's wife was a CIA covert operative. If that is true, Cheney cannot deny the fact that he knew Plame was a CIA NOC. That means he will be indicted for treason.
http://markcrispinmiller.blogspot.com/2005/10/powell-on-cheneys-role-in-plamegate.html
Powell recounted to the senator [McCain] that he had traveled on air force one with Bush and Cheney, and brought to their attention a classified memorandum about the issue of whether there was indeed a transaction inolving Niger and yellow cake uranium. the document included Ambassador Joe Wilson's involvement and identified his wife, Valerie Plame, as a covert agent. the memorandum further stated that this information was secret. Powell told McCain that he showed that memo only to two people--president and vice president. according to Powell, Cheney fixated on the Wilson/Plame connection, and Plame's status.
Powell testified about this exchange in great length to the grand jury investigating the plame case. according to sources close to the case, Powell appeared convinced that the vice president played a focal role in disclosing plame's undercover status.
Posted by KevinSchmidtVA on October 26, 2005 at 01:57 AM
Kevin, yeah, what happened to the chatter about the Air Force One trip to Africa? I thought someone said Ari Fleicher was seen reading the memo on board. So they American Taliban is throwing out the Tenet story to throw us all off? Either way, Cheney knew and his right hand man acted on it...without any consultation with the old man? They want us to believe that Scooter Libbey runs the country?
Posted by SandyH on October 26, 2005 at 08:03 AM
The Republican machine runs Bush and Cheney and all Republicans in Washington DC. If any of these people become a liability to the party, they will be asked to leave. Until then, it dosen't matter what they do because the machine has no morals or respect for democracy or the law. They have proved that over and over the past five years. It is their style to try to destroy people who disagree with them and they will continue to do so. This is no isolated incident, just one they got caught doing and the Republican party still backs every one of them, including Delay.

THE (Iraq) Scare-crow WAR
I call the Iraq war the "scarecrow" war.
The reason being that both the rhetoric and implementation was not and still is not about providing a flame for the terrorist to gather or changing the leadership in Iraq. Or even some dream of removing an existential threat to Israel. Note Iraq was no longer in the top 5 threats to Israel.
To accomplish this war, the USA hoped to start a civil war within Iraq with the hope that the war would be short lived. THE USA decided to topple the Baath Party and the heads of the party in particular. This meant and still means a war on one group w/in Iraq. A war of rhetoric to scare and then crow about the after effect. AND a civil war by definition.
Sooooo, why is this not a war on terror? Iraq is essentially a 3 group nation (simplistic given the clan networks). USA decided to attack the Sunnis and hope that the Kurds and Shiites would join forces to crush the Sunnis infrastructure. The USA accomplished this. But the net result was a different organization (Sunnis) sprung up -- an adhoc group of Iraq freedom fighters. This materialized into a formal civil war, an extension of the civil war started by the USA.
Now the 3 group are fighting internally and against each other for their survival. Several "terrorist" groups are coming into Iraq with the mission to remove the white Christian army from a Muslim land. After all, that is what these groups want to happen, NOT an ATTACK on western culture. Sooooo... Iran is somewhat supporting the Shiites in the South {but they are being attacked by USA para-military troops at the moment and have an agenda that does not include a war in Iraq}. The Kurds are somewhat isolated but a coherent group with their own security. AND the Sunnis who are on the receiving end of whole sale attacks (2 towns of ~200,000 have been completely destroyed -- Fallujah and a town in the west}... and the Saudi's are funneling money, etc. to support the group they align with...
SOOO... from the language of cruSADE.. To the starting of a civil war, the BUSH admin has openly started a civil war that they say is the March of Freedom... sounds very much like the KKK... with a group of WHITE men pushing for an ideology... and the rightful domination of an infidel group of non-Christians... and security of oil assets in the region.

Do not let them do this again ex: right after the Dem Convention last year; right after the John Edwards pick, and others.......

Too Bad, but this dnc site has degrade into a cheap tabloid. A site where you only read extreme, out-landish, information. The only content in this site is deceitful rhetoric, propaganda and extreme left ideas. They do add a few things like help Katrina victims and "grass roots" links to make it look good.
Don't think for a moment that they don't already have stories on all possible indictments in the Plame case. They are eagerly awaiting these releases. Not so they can clean up the "corruption" in the country but only to try to make the GOP look bad.
It is sad that a major party has so little to offer but pointing fingers at others. Like a child in a school yard the dnc spends it's time fault finding instead of building character.
Don't believe me? Read all you can here that go to the gop site and read all you can there. Then you will find how shallow the dnc has become.

Hey GarhardtWulf/ KarlRove, you RNC staffer.
This site states facts about what the radical right wing administration is doing.
A few decades ago we had Dick "I am not a crook" Nixon. Now we have Dick "I don't Wilson" Cheney.
Powell's Chief of Staff when he was the Secratary of State has an article in the newspapers today. He talks about a cabal in the white house including Cheney, Rummy and a few others who operated like a dictatorship rather than a democracy; something many people have suspected for a long time!
The CIA leak case shows how despotic this administration has become; this adfministration is using the power of the presidency to intimidate opposing view point, using propaganda, lies and falsehoods.
And when the legal process takes its course, they attack the prosecutor. See what Hutchison is doing with respect to the CIA leak indictments. See what DeLay is doing in the indictments and trial of his money laundering activities.
This administration is eroding the basic foundations of this great democracy.
We need to stop this "regime" before it is too late. Congress cannot fall into the trap of empowering the President to use the military inside the country. We cannot rule out this administration declaring marshall law and taking on emergency powers to keep themselves in power beyond their electoral mandate!

Checkout this dnc site. you post more comments than any other person.
Humm...
So how much do they pay you to write all the propaganda you spew? huh? I must say though, you do a pretty convincing job at "the average guy" writing. Notice how all of your comments go straight down the extreme left commentary line, and nobody does the amount of writing you do without getting paid for it.
At least your are doing your job.
God Bless America!

this dnc site has degrade into a cheap tabloid...
Considering the amount of material you GOP stooges are providing us with, why are you so surprised. You are the ones who have brought this presidency and Republican Congress down to the O.J. Simpson trial level.
But just wait until the civil trials begin with the beautiful, mysterious blonde spy confronting her nerdy White House tormenters. Sounds sort of like a Jerry Lewis comedy. This presidency has become a French farce, and you want to blame us for it?
And you want our '06 agenda now...when your party can't even provide water and ice to those devastated by Wilma? Get off your duff and go down there to Florida and open up a few more distribution centers.
You had no problem mobilizing after the 2000 election to get thousands of lawyers down there within hours of the polls closing....and all those people standing in line in the humid, hot Florida sun remember it well. And if they don't, we'll remind them.
Posted by SandyH on October 26, 2005 at 06:15 PM
SandyH,
"down to the O.J. Simpson trial level"?
That was Clinton
Some may get what they deserve. If they deserve it they should get it. No argument here.
"And you want our '06 agenda now"
Agenda? What agenda does the dnc have but to deride anything any motivated person comes up with. You can't just sit back and continue to point out other peoples fault and expect to raise your party up.
You just can't give up the 2000 election can you? That was years ago. and Gore, thankfully, lost. It was Gore, you revisionist leftist, that first started the court battle with his hordes of lawyers. If you get your fact strait it was Bush on the defense from the start.
Get out and help these displaced people. I have. Quit with the blaming. Get a life and do something positive.

Normally cool GarhardtWulf/ Karl Rove seems to be pretty upset with my last post. Something must have been very true; truth hurts. I don't blame GarhardtWulf/ Rove for his illogical outburst. And I do not take it personally!
There is a feeling the CIA leak may become as big or bigger than Watergate and may reach a lot higher, a lot, lot higher than Rove and Libby; even the top.
Next few days will tell. In the meanwhile, there is nervousness in the RNC staffer rank and file including those who snoop on this site!
DeLay has acknowledged he had not reported many money transactions. Too late for a mia culpa isn't it!
The RNC propaganda machinery and their radical right wing news media (Fox News, Wall Street Journal etc.) will get on overdrive in the next few days and weeks as the CIA leak investigation plays out!
The incompetent brother in the Florida State House is comepeting with the incompetent brother in the WH in the Wilma response!

Working Families that Vote for Republicans have a slave mentality? THIS IS A HARD SAYING BUT TRUE!
Many of the Working Families that vote for Republicans believe they don't derserve better than to work hard and give their taxes to the wealthy and wealthy Corporations. Some that vote Republican have told me that it is TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMY WITH AN UP FLOW ON TAXES. In other words the lower working class pay their taxes and they are given to the working middle class and the working middle class's pays the taxes that are given to the upper class tax cuts. They tell me that is why the economy is so strong? CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS, PEOPLE ARE JUST CRAZY AREN'T THEY?

The question that should have been asked at the Fitzgerald press conference:
To continue with the baseball analogy, let's assume that someone other than the pitcher threw the sand into the umpire's eyes. Now we get to the heart of the matter. What was this player's motive? Why would this player protect the pitcher in this play by jeopardizing his standing with the officials and being charged with interference with the umpire? Is the pitcher paying him? Has the pitcher promised to protect him? To give him another, more lucrative position in another venue? This is the real question.

What kind of message does this scandal send to other patriots serving their country? Sure, Valerie Plame's husband took the administration to task, but did Plame have a hand in that? She may well have disagreed with her husband -- need I remind anyone just whom Arnold Schwarzenegger is married to?
Libby should count himself lucky that he -- and the whole dirty lot of them, including Dick Cheney -- weren't charged with treason. We are at war, aren't we? And didn't they disclose, and conspire to disclose, the identity of a CIA operative? And aren't the identities of CIA operatives a matter of national security? How is what they did any different than disclosing troop locations in Iraq or Afghanistan? How is it any different than what the Rosenbergs were executed for?
