Bush on the Economy: Long on Rhetoric, Short on Results

December 5, 2005

Washington, DC - Today President Bush spoke in North Carolina and tout economic "successes" while ignoring the reality that millions of hard-working Americans can see for themselves: that the Bush economy is not working for them.

"Millions of Americans already know what the President refuses to admit, that the Bush economy isn't working for them. President Bush refuses to tell the truth: wages are flat, health care costs are skyrocketing and Americans are paying more for basic necessities like heating oil," said Democratic National Committee Communications Director Karen Finney.

"While President Bush praises his own economic record, he fails to mention that he squandered a huge surplus and has presided over the worst deficits in our nation's history. And Bush's budgets don't honestly address the ongoing costs of the Iraq War or the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

"The President travelled to North Carolina today to sell his failed economic agenda. He neglected to explain to the people of that state, who have seen more than a hundred thousand of their friends and neighbors lose their manufacturing jobs, why his White House has stood aside and offered little help. We simply cannot trust Republicans in Washington to put the economy back to work for the American people.

"America can do better than President Bush's reckless fiscal policy. We need real economic leadership that reduces the deficit and puts the concerns of America's working families first."
