DNC Commemorates 50th Anniversary of Montgomery Bus Boycott

December 2, 2005

Washington, DC - Today, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

"Today as America celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott we also commemorate the life of the late Mrs. Rosa Parks, the moving spirit who helped to spark this historic fight for freedom and equality. The brave actions taken by those on that day in Montgomery, Alabama fifty years ago became a 381-day sacrifice to free America from its immoral history of racial oppression and segregation. This would be the catalyst for the larger Civil Rights Movement and the struggle for justice for all Americans regardless of race, ethnicity, or class.

"While we have made tremendous progress there still remains much work to do. As we celebrate this landmark day in American history we must renew our commitment to our fellow man and continue the fight for fairness and justice. As Democrats we believe that we have a duty to uplift one another and that every American deserves a chance to achieve the American dream. For this reason we must renew our commitment to fighting for social and economic justice and eradicating poverty. We must also work to protect our fundamental rights, including the right to vote, which many Americans have fought and died for.

"Together America can do better. It is in this spirit that we honor the contributions of those who have gone before us by continuing the noble struggle that started fifty years ago."
