When You Wish Upon a Democrat

Posted by on December 12, 2005 at 03:40 PM

After a few days in 30 degree weather in New York City last week, I was really looking forward to our two days in Orlando for the Florida State Democratic Party Conference. Apparently, the Democrats in Florida were really looking forward to seeing us as well.

The staff told me that they expected this to be the largest conference in Florida history and were bracing for approximately 3,000 delegates from across the Sunshine State.

Close to 1,000 people packed the ballroom at the Contemporary Resort at Disney World to hear Gov Dean, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and Governor Tom Vilsack speak about the need to re-elect Sen. Bill Nelson and put a Democrat in the Governor's Mansion.

Gov Vilsack had the best line of the night. "I'm looking forward to Reggie Bush winning the Heisman trophy because it will be the first time a Bush has won something with all of the votes counted."

There was a guy dressed in a Santa suit and when I asked him why he was wearing the outfit he replied: "I want to deliver a Democratic victory to Floridians in 2006." Ho, Ho, Ho!

It was a great event this weekend. All across the South, we are seeing Democrats pull together and build back the base in a region where most analysts write off as red every election.

Floridians care about the bread and butter issues, not the social hot button issues. Issues like healthcare, education, and jobs are those that Floridians hold dear. Those are the same issues that Democrats care about. I will work to get this news out to fellow Floridians in both the state and federal races in 2006 and beyond.

Well, I hope the Governor took the opportunity to tell Bill Nelson that his flip-flopping attitude is not helpful to the Democratic agenda. The Florida Democratic party has long been plagued by a bunch of closet-Republicans and Bill Nelson is almost in.
The reason Florida turned to elect Republicans was in large part because the Democrats couldn't be trusted. When you consider that people turned to the Republican party in search of honesty, you can see how deceived and disillusioned many people are.
Democratic liars helped spawn the culture of corruption and, when you come right down to it, still aren't doing much to stop it.

MonicaSmith, What should Nelson do that he hasn't done? What did he leave undone that he should have done? How would you have done differently? Say you are elected in his place, how would you handle the job?

Response to One-for-All; I receive weekly updated, from Mega-Vote, which tells me how my Senator's and Representatives vote every week their in session. I can't remember specific issues, but there have been repeated times when Nelson has voted with Republicans, against the Democrats, and against his contituents best interest!!! (He'll probable vote for Alito)

One that really sticks in my mind, is Obama (who we met and helped set-up for in Daytona in 04'); voting FOR the Bankrupcy Bill.

I didn't see Sen. Nelson down here campaigning his heart out for Kerry!!!

You know what, glad you all enjoyed your party in Orlando!!! That didn't/ and doesn't do a thing to impress me, or get anyone elected! We worked our fingers to the bone, in two counties, trying to get Kerry elected, and I didn't see any of you at either one doing a thing!!!

We, worked to stop electronic voting machines by diebold from permantly being placed in Volusia, so we stand a wish and a prayer of electing a Dem. ever again in that county! There was NOT a Democrat anywhere to be seen!

We begged then State Dem. Chair Maddox for help, here in Putnam County, because our DEC wasn't organizing a thing! We were getting bombarded with Repug. flyer's daily in the mail, full of lies! I never even got a response!

I repeat my call, for the need for a third Independant/Progressive Party, where the people who do the work, are the one's who speak for the party!!! Instead of the private, elitest Democratic Party where Outsiders aren't welcome!!

While discussing your supposed "great" party, in Orlando! If all the representation you can musteer in a State of over 2 million is 2000, people you have a real problem!! Move-On can get that many together for a Protest Rally in a matter of a few days!

Daytona Beach News-Journal; which did a least three editorials this past week in support of No Diabold Electronic Voting, wrote up the Democratic convention on page 4F, I have it! It was under a story with pictures about circus elephants, and next to Death Notices! I haven't decided if I should send to the DNC in Washington D.C., or the State Florida Chair!

When Dean called for the Kick-Off parties, there wasn't a single one in all of the nearest four counties, Volusia, Putnam, St. John's or Flagler! We had to drive 80 miles one-way to get to the one in Marion County! How many "Party" members from those four counties went to the convention in Orlando? (st OUR expense!!)

The Real Christmas War

December 15, 2005

Yesterday, in an act of civil disobedience, 114 religious leaders were arrested when they refused to leave the steps of the Cannon House Office Building. They were protesting the House budget, which cuts billions of dollars in assistance to the poor while giving a $90 billion tax cut mostly to the wealthy. Instead of looking out for the least of us, the religious right and people like Jerry Falwell are more concerned with ensuring the greeters at stores like Target and Lands’ End say "Merry Christmas" instead of "Happy Holidays." Their time would be better spent fighting the real war this Christmas – the right’s assault on programs that help the nation’s neediest citizens.

The budget is a moral document. As Rev. Jim Wallace, founder of Sojourners, points out, "poverty is a moral issue, it's a faith issue, it's a religious issue." Religious groups across the country have rallied in recent months to get Congress to drop the budget cuts to programs that help the poor. These groups include the Catholic Church, the United Methodist Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Presbyterian Church, the Episcopal Church, and the United Church of Christ and they represent more than 86 million Americans. They understand that the true spirit of Christmas does not include $50 billion in cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and student loans.

One way to celebrate the spirit of Christmas is to not cut billions of dollars, but to raise the minimum wage. For millions of Americans making minimum wage, Christmas is a difficult time of year. If Congress takes no action on the minimum wage, it will be the eighth year in a row that Congress has failed to enact even a small increase in the minimum wage. By not raising the minimum wage while inflation rises, Congress is in effect giving these Americans a pay cut. Religious progressives are fighting for a living wage for all working Americans.

Instead of fighting real problems, the right is inventing problems. While progressives are fighting to end poverty and struggling with real issues, the right is inventing battles. In addition to the Target battle, Jerry Falwell’s Liberty Counsel threatened to sue an elementary school because they changed the words to “Silent Night” in a Christmas play, claiming they tried to secularize Christmas. In fact, the school was just performing a copyrighted play that contains numerous songs about Christmas, including the grand finale, an audience-led group singing of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”

This is from a Progressive e-mail news letter I receive daily, WHERE ARE THE DEMOCRATS?
WE THE PEOPLE, need a PROGRESSIVE/INDEPENDANY PARTY where ALL the PEOPLE ARE WELCOME! Instead of this private, elitest Democratic party where we're only welcome when there's work to be done, they're to good to do!!!!
