Who's Divided?
Posted by on December 15, 2005 at 11:51 AM
From the Boston Globe -- A piece entitled "A divided GOP heads to year's end with unmet goals"
After starting the year full of grand promise, the expanded Republican majority in Congress is stumbling to the finish, with party leaders facing unexpected difficulty this week winning support for a raft of unfinished priorities, and major bills involving taxes, healthcare, and the war on terrorism appearing likely to get bumped into 2006.
GOP leaders threatened yesterday to keep Congress in Washington for a rare weekend session to get critical work done, and aides expressed hope that members' desires to head home for the holidays will push along compromises.
But the list of unfinished legislation underscores the deep divisions among Republicans that have stymied the party's broad goals for the year. For example, the proposal to drill for oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- the Bush administration's top energy priority -- is in danger of being shelved, with moderate Republicans who question its effect on the environment vowing to sink the entire budget if it is in the final bill.
At the same time, a bipartisan group of senators, mindful of an erosion of civil liberties, say they will filibuster a bill to extend the Patriot Act, with a showdown likely tomorrow that will pit Republicans against one another. Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, is locked in a standoff with the White House over a measure he added to a different bill that would prevent the administration from torturing prisoners.
Of course there was that CBS poll released last week as well:
"From what you have seen or heard about the situation in Iraq, what should the United States do now? Should the U.S. increase the number of U.S. troops in Iraq, keep the same number of U.S. troops in Iraq as there are now, or decrease the number of U.S. troops in Iraq, or remove all its troops from Iraq?"
Democrats:
Decrease/Remove All: 76%
Increase/Keep Same: 19%
Republicans:
Decrease/Remove All: 41%
Increase/Keep Same: 53%

I think we should pull out in Six Months like Murtha said. What would it hurt? We can always invade again if the Generals think we should! If we don't try it then we will always wonder, if some of the men that die after six Months from now, if they died invain? That would be hard to explain on the day of reconding!
How is that there has been no comments from this site about the Honorable Joe Lieberman and his statement that there is a clear vision and strategy in Iraq? I mean this guy was the democratic vice-presidential nominee (who I voted for)in 2000! Lieberman has it right. Despite the intelligence failures this war is right and it is just. But please do not be fooled by my log-in name. Democrats are not the liars...the far left idiots that run the party are. We need to get rid of Howard Dean and get someone that has a clear platform to direct the mainstream democrats that far outnumber the idiot liberals that have hi-jacked our party.
Together, that's an average of 58% who want to decrease or remove all soldiers from Iraq.Splitting us up into our respective parties, does not change the fact that the majority of America wants to see a withdrawl in U.S. troop numbers. The divide we see in the Republican party is simply the smart ones waking up to the reality that this war is going nowhere. The Starbucks(Dawn of the 2006 elections)is starting to kick in.
you crack me up Rliars :)
I actually think you're on the right track though - keep doin your best to sound like a Democrat - when you finally get it right
then judge.
Joe Lieberman is a closet Republican. Gore realized his mistake and supported Dean in '04.
Democrats need to win the Conecticut Senate seat.
This is so great hearing that the Repooplicans are so divide amongst themselves. Geogie's a real dumbass. His approval rating is below 40%. We must work hard to get it below 30% now. We have the enemy down now. Let's go for the kill. We should get control of the House and Senate by 2008. Then, with a PRESIDENT KERRY, we will have the Repooplicans by the f&&king balls. Can you say castration?
Republicans are divided because of Bush's lack of popularity. It means that the extreme right is in trouble, and the moderates are starting to listen to their constituents instead of goose-stepping along with the "dissent is traitorous" Bushies.
People are starting to think for themselves, and they are starting to feel betrayed by the spin.
Repub-lites who claim to be Democrats need to wake up and feel the heat. Otherwise they won't get through the primaries, even if the DLC (Democrat Loosership Committee) is on their side.
My only concern is will the DNC keep listening to those clowns and blow the upcoming elections too?
We've got some fractures and divisions of our own.
The Liberman camp can't seem to come to terms with the Murtha camp, and all across the board we have varying views on Iraq policy. The reason is clear: Conditions change daily, and views evolve as time goes on.
So what can we democrats unite on? What rallying point can the Clintons, the Kerrys, the Murthas, the Libermans, the Kennedys, and the Warners come together on? I feel the answer is the health care crisis.
With some imagination, fresh ideas, and dogged approaches, the DNC can come together as champions for the middle class and the poor on this issue.
The Illinois governer has had success with his "All Kids" health care act, and it's available and affordable to everyone, which is novel in itself. Could we not unite behind a national cause that is similar in concept, yet open to adults as well?
Let the republicans splinter, and keep being shown as slashing the middle class and befriending big money to support their elections. We have a mandate before our eyes that can capture the center, left, and even some on the right on this issue. Who cares how divided we are on Iraq. That problem will resolve itself over time, healthcare will not unless we act.
A staunch Democrat...

I'm new to blogging, but not to politics. If the
Democrats don't wake up and start pulling together, we are going to find ourselves on the losing end again! John Murtha gave us a strong rallying cry. Why aren't we rallying? Let's get united on getting out of this mess in Iraq. Timetable or not, I think we need to remember those young men and women (look at Tammy Duckworth!) who have shown such remarkable courage and realize that we Democrats have been complete wimps. So let's get back on our feet and tell this Country we are committed to getting out of Iraq ASAP--we can work out the details later. If we don't find a solution soon, the blood from our dead and wounded will be on our heads, and not just on the Bush Bunch! I had a father, a husband and a son--all in the Regular Army. I believe there are times we must go to war, but this particular war was not justified.
Candidates who don't have a fire in their bellies are not needed.
This administration has lied to us, spied on us, treated our working poor, our military people, and everybody but the uber-rich like crap.
Our military is tired, our children are left behind, and our infrastructure is falling apart. Instead of fighting terrorism, we are giving terrorists recruiting tools.
When are we going to get more Democrats to sound like the opposition party they are supposed to be.
When is the DNC going to tell the DLC and the Republi-lites to get lost?
Murtha is right, we need at least 50 more like him. We need justified anger at being lied to and about, we need investigations.
Every public official at the federal level swears to "uphold the Constitution of the United States and defend it against all enemies foreign and domestic". Bush and Cheny have violated their oaths of office many times. Demand impeachment!
Amen...
DINO's like Lieberman need to go bye bye...
You can't play Neville Chamberlain when the other party is acting like Adolf Hitler.
You either stand up for yourself and your principles or get your butt kicked.
Bush has said just "trust me" every time his war support starts to crumble and by doing so, what have we got from him? He OK'd illegal spying on our citizens and is against a bill that prevents the US from torturing POW's.Has kidnapped citizens of other countries and detained them secret prisons around the world because they might look like a terrorist. Trust Bush? This is America, or it used to be, where we were humane to prisioners and demanded the same treatment of our prisioners from every country on this planet. We had laws that protected our citizens from scoundrels like George Bush who will do anything to anybody in the name of terrorism. We had a balanced budget when he took over, now the vault has nothing in it but a huge IOU.The question is "how far have we regressed as a civilized nation in the last five years. You have to be a fool to trust George Bush.
Big Sam,
Sorry I'm so late on this but you said:
"We've got some fractures and divisions of our own."
"The Lieberman camp can't seem to come to terms with the Murtha camp, and all across the board we have varying views on Iraq policy. The reason is clear: Conditions change daily, and views evolve as time goes on."
Sweetheart. There is no such thing as a Lieberman Camp.If there is,it's in the Republican Party.
With all the news about the "secret" wiretapping, the "Downing Street Memo's", the "no bid contracts (Halliburton)" how come I have not heard the word "IMPEACHMENT"? The cry from ALL Democrates is laud and clear, IMPEACH Bush and Cheney but our representatives are afraid of bring up the subject in the House or the Senate. THE DEMOCRATES MUST TAKE THE LEAD....IMPEACHMENT IS A MUST IF OUR PARTY IS TO SURVIVE. Demand our Representative keep pushing for impeachment, let the Republican Congress know that we mean business.
Maybe you guys should head on over to MSNBC.com and check out the president's approval ratings. They are up significantly. GOP support is also up. Looks like 2006 is going to bring us a filibuster proof majority. John Paul Stevens is going to step down and maybe Ruth Ginsberg and then we can finally put Edith Jones and Emilio Garza on the court and end as my new hero put it "a so called right to privacy". So, to all of you slutty democrat women and there are a lot of you, you better hurry up and have your abortions quickly because your time is running out. And if the news couldn't get any worse for you hippies, 2008 is going to probably bring us President Santorum or ideally President Bush, President Jeb Bush!
You can always tell when the RNC is really scared, they put their guys on all the boards that will allow them and we get treated to a rash of propaganda from their feeble minded soldiers.
Irish,
The bottom line is that impeachment ain't gonna happen until we get control of BOTH houses of Congress in 11 months.
Even if that happens, do you really want Dick Cheney as president? (oops, he already is)
The best strategy is to get control of Congress first. Then with the majority the Dems not only can set the agenda and pass the laws necessary to end this, but start investigating the BS that has been covered up over the last six years.
PragmaticAmerican,
I'm from Houston and proud to say I've hated Junior and his stupidity since 1994. There are also many peeps in the Houston area who agree with me. Despite the fact that Texas is temporarily a 'red' state, Houston has remained a Democratic bastion to the consternation of the Texas and Harris County GOP.
If Houston were as backward as you think is is, lesbian Annise Parker would have NEVER been elected three times to City Council (twice city wide)and she wouldn't be occupying the controller's chair now and being considered for mayor when Bill White leaves. Sue Lovell just became the second gay person elected to council two weeks ago.
I'm guessing you live in the 'burbs surrounding Harris County/Houston where they still worship and salute Dumb Fuhrer.
It's plain and simple as this.
Liberalism is intelligence in action.
Conservatives PREACH Christian values. Yet, they practice incompassion, insensitivity, intolerance, predjudice, and racism. Those aren't Christian values. That leads to my next statement.
Conservatism is hypocricy in action.
Need I say more?
Conservatives don't preach Christian values. They use them for sound bites to ensnare single-issue voters.
Much as I think that the "Moral Majority" is really an immoral minority, you do have to sort of feel sorry for them because the uber-rich OILigarchs have been playing them like a second-hand fiddle for years. The sad thing is that THEY HAVEN'T CAUGHT ON YET!!! Which shows you something about their mentality (or lack thereof.)
A lot of the real Christians have caught on and are starting to get mad. If the Democrats start appealing to their former base, the working people, and drop the emphasis on some of the single-issue-voter issues that the Repubs have been using to defeat Democrats, they could get their base back and we could start to straighten this Katrina-like mess the Bushies have made of this country, and maybe even get some criminal warrants out for those in the administration who have been wiping their dirty, corrupt feet on the laws of this land particularly the Constitution.
The DNC needs to get their head out of their ass and start acting like leaders, or go find a third party who won't win anyway.
Time to lead, follow, or get out of the way!!!
Right wing conservatives are not real Christians, because they don't practice what Jeasus taught. They just go through the motions yet support garbage people like Delay and Rove,Robertson and many others. You are who you support;it's that simple.
The American people by a majority voted for President George Bush and a majority of Republican congressional and Senate seats in order that these folks would govern the country.
The polls that are taken should not be relevant to the action the elected representatives take.
This is the problem with the Democratic officals and party members, thier decisions are governed by which ever way the wind is blowing.

Well there they go again talking about if the Democratic party would only appeal to certain groups the could get party back and so on. Just state the facts which represent your true beliefs not what you think will get you elected.
2006-2008 predictions:
Number 1)John Mcain will be the next president of the United States and Lieberman, Giuliani or Hillary will be the VP.
Number 2)The US will invade Venezuela.
Number 3)Israel will target and bomb WMD sites in Syria and Iran.
Number 4)The Muslim Christian war will expand.
Number 5)Stem Cell progress will change the medical field as we now know it.
Wow johnnysend, Lets go through your Jeanne Dixon act...
2006-2008 predictions:
Number 1)John Mcain will be the next president of the United States and Lieberman, Giuliani or Hillary will be the VP.
*** McCain will run, but in the spirit of Rove/Bush, either Jeb Bush or Sen. Frist, or Sen. Linsay Graham will run another push poll about John McCain havin' them black babies, and that'll kill McCain in the Southern primaries (cause Southern Republicans don't cotton to their politicians havin' no black babies.)
Number 2)The US will invade Venezuela.
*** no Iran, after point #3; And we're already neck deep in Columbia with mercenary forces, so if we send in US forces into South America, under the US flag they'll go into Columbia first, then Venezuela, then Chile (why did the Chileans ever get rid of that good, pro-US, Republican favored Gen. Pinochet? Geez, Kissinger, and Nixon really loved him, its a shame the GOP lost that international ally)
Number 3)Israel will target and bomb WMD sites in Syria and Iran.
*** yes, true, Israel will bomb Iran, which will lead to Iran bombing Israel, and then the USA shooting at Iranian aircraft, and Iran launching anti-ship missiles at everything floating in the Gulf, including oil tankers--- ending Saudi and Kuwati and UAE and Qatar oil supplies.
Number 4)The Muslim Christian war will expand.
*** yep--- lets see USA has 280 million people, Islamic Arab -Asian- North African population 1.1 billion, so they can conduct suicide bombings, and lose 10 to 1 and only take out half our country.
Number 5)Stem Cell progress will change the medical field as we now know it.

Now for some real 2006 predictions that you can take to the bank:
1- From SoCal, Rep Duke Cunnigham's testimony puts 8-12 more Republicans on the path to a Grand Jury and likely Federal Prison.
2- In Sugarland Texas, Former Republican Majority leader Rep. Tom DeLay's associates Jack Abramoff, and Scanlon give testimony putting 15-20 Republican congressmen before the Grand Jury, and likely going to Federal prison, and in trouble with voters, hopefully including retiring Rep. Kolbe- AZ, and Rep JD Hayworth- AZ, and Senator John Kyl- AZ. They're all regulars at the DeLay/ Abramoff/ Norquist money trough.
3- From the White House, Karl Rove is indicted, then Scooter Libby's trial starts, Scooter plea bargains for a shorter sentence, but before either ROve or Scooter testify Bush pardons both, and Cheney, along with the entire White House iraq group, Paul Wolfie-witz for the Valerie Plame outing; Making Bush the first president to pardon anyone for betraying American military forces or intelligence agents.
4- And as all this unfolds, 20-30 Republicans who hold their oath to uphold the US Constitution serious will join with Democrats and hold congressional hearings on Bush's unconstitutional spying programs on US citizens. Leading to impeachment hearings in August, and into September.
The way things are going with Republican indictments, there could be more Congressional seats coming open than the scheduled ones for 2006.
The Republicans party is starting to sound like "Law & Order-Special Investigations Branch".
Will Faux News run the video when they frog-march Cheney out of the White House?
No way, Butte. Some BIG story will develop about a runaway blonde white woman, who may be dead, or missing, or just hiding, and Greta Van what_is_wrong_with_her_brain will dominate the news cycle with it from Vail, or Aspen, or Australia...
And everyone go to the miami herald and read Robert Steinback's column today. Now. It captures the essence of why Bush is the worst President in the history of the Republic, single handedly tearing down our freedoms, and convincing his followers that freedom and liberty aren't desirable things...
