Your Billboard in the News
Posted by on December 5, 2005 at 09:50 AM
The Associated Press:
An advertising company that gives most of its political donations to Republicans blocked the Democratic National Committee from putting up billboards criticizing GOP Rep. Jean Schmidt of Ohio.
Lamar Advertising Co. of Baton Rouge, La., refused to put up two billboards in Portsmouth, Ohio, and another in Cincinnati with a picture of Schmidt and the following message: "Shame on you, Jean Schmidt: Stop attacking veterans. Keep your eye on the ball - we need a real plan for Iraq."
The billboards are the result of 7,000 donations, DNC executive director Tom McMahon said, after Schmidt attacked Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha, a Democrat and Marine veteran, for his call for withdrawal from Iraq. Schmidt was booed off the House floor two weeks ago when she said "cowards cut and run, Marines never do."
Google News shows 46 related articles on the web about Lamar Advertising's rejection of your billboard--that's quite a bit of press. Many of the papers/stations covering the story are from Ohio as well. Malia Rulon wrote a terrific piece about the refusal for the largest newspaper in Jean Schmidt's district, The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Very encouraging reporting, Tim. It's good to see that the press is taking on the story. It's sickening that they personally attack Howard Dean, and talk about "scamming" donors out of money. Fools. They're so unaware of the fact that half this country was not sleeping when they took control, and we are not the sheeple kool-aid drinkers that cannot differentiate the troops from the policy. The darkness ends with the light of just one candle. The truth will come to light.
Nice work, DNC.

Anything more we can do on the blog to get the message out there?

If there are anybodies that believe the Republicans are moral then they don't know what is morality! I guess the Democrats are the only people left that are moral and conduct themselves as gentlemen and gentleladys. Don't you know God in his heaven is laughing at them and laughing at anyone that buys their rhetoric? If they keep the house and senate after the goofes the Republicans have made, then the people deserve what they get.

man, it's amazing to see a situation in which money apparently doesn't talk and bullshit definitely walks [where they want to...]. these billboards, bought and paid for, being rejected, well, this is just discrimination, isn't it?? not that we haven't become used to our 1st amendment rights being ignored or just plain murdered--it just amazes me that they have the 'cojones' to pull something like this... [well, actually, it doesn't really 'amaze' me--we've kind of learned what to expect from these discriminators...

I'm hoping that OH-2 residents are ready to boycott Lamar Advertising.
Just like Wal-Mart, they deserve a lump of coal in thier stockings.

I hope people from every state are reading this and understand the stubborn obstinacity and refusal to do the decent thing by this Lamar bunch. Its outrageous. It really is that bad. Time for alternative press...get this story out. Better yet, get Mizz (erable) Schmidt out! I like the idea about mobile billboards. They do that with loud speakers in England. Just contacted Act For Change, keep spreading the word. This is inexcusable censorship by a rotten partisan un business...shame on Schmidt, Lamar, and discriminatory comerce. They are all exposed anyway...

We know what scoundrels these Republicans are, forget them.I can't believe there is only one billboard company in the area. Find another that wants some money. When you wave money in front of people, you will always find a taker.

Why don't we try to get an injunction for contract performance by Lamar. They have shown bad faith under the contract. There's a strong argument that $ damages are insufficient and specific performance is required. Let's get this to court. Call the ACLU. It's a free speech issue.

This is one time when the Dems need to stand firm, prove that a valid, signed contract is in place, and enforce the contract. There should be no hesitation to force Lamar Advertising's hand for non performance and for breach of contract.
What Schmidt did was wrong and waiting for an extended period of time to reply will be interpreted as indecisiveness on the part of the party.

Great! Get the story out there. The republicans can attempt to censor us but as long as we are persistant, we will be heard!!!

If you have plenty of "extra" cash to donate to the billboard, good for you. But, G.W. has been killing me for 5 years now, so my money isn't going to any artificial sign of protest. When the Dem.'s are ready to IMPEACH this unpatriotic, coward, I'm all in!
Fighting back with "Republican" style tactics is fine with me. It's been way over due. Sadly, that's what folks in this country respond to. But, we're WAY past that point now. We need ACTION!

Republicans have only one way of fighting. They use everything they can dig up on people and every court, every law suit that they can use to win. They will do anything and it works. Why won't Democrats do the same? When the future of your country is at stake from these right wingers, it is time to fight fire with fire. The Republican committee has a team that goes over every Democrat that dissagrees with them. They look for anything, any dirt, anything that will blount the political fallout. Why don't we have investigaters digging the dirt on these scoundrels. There's plenty out there and the public wants to hear it.Scoundrel's leave a trail everywhere they go. What is wrong with our leaders? Haven't they had enough of these SOB's? I have. These Republicans made the rules, we didn't, so let's use their rules on them and win some of the congressional seats back. Forget fair, it's not in their game plan and shouldn't be in ours.

There should be more "shame on you" billboards to call attention to the Ohioans who sold their citizens down the river in supporting George W. Bush:
Carl H. Linder
W. R. Timken, Jr
Robert T. Bennett
Ron Bashear
David L. Brenna
William O. Brisben
Douglas E. Corn
Walden W. O'Dell
M. Keith Weikel, PhD
