Honesty In Government Event (Columbus, Ohio)

Posted by on January 18, 2006 at 05:26 PM

This is my first few minutes with Internet access since this morning, but I wanted to tell you about an event newly elected Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern called, "the best Democratic event [he has] ever seen at the State House."

I arrived at the Ohio Capitol building a few minutes late, and was actually denied access through a side entrance into the Rotunda -- there were just entirely too many people and reporters crammed into the long, but narrow, hallway leading up to a stage erected earlier this morning. It would seem that a Columbus television news crew had the same problem, and we hustled around together, working our way to the front of the crowd just in time to hear Governor Dean discussing Democratic unity, both nationally and locally, when it comes to clearing corruption from capitol buildings across the country.

Today's event, of course, highlighted Governor Dean, Chairman Redfern, and a host of Ohio legislators "demanding the same honesty and accountability in a state where Republican officials have defrauded the public and infected everything from the budget to the voting process with cronyism and corruption." Before and after the speeches and questions, participants were asked to sign a petition, formalizing the demands.

Governor Dean and Chairman Redfern also took a host of questions from local and national press attending the event. One of the more entertaining portions of the Q&A was a reporter from Fox News asserting that Democrats in Ohio were tossed out of office years ago because of rampant corruption -- Chairman Redfern did a terrific job setting the reporter straight, while explaining that reapportionment took what is essentially a 50/50 state and gave it a dramatic red hue in the legislature. You can actually hear the reporter attempting to shout Chairman Redfern down in the clip:

Today's Ohio event wasn't the only location Democrats held forth to unveil a plan meant to restore honesty and in government. In Washington, D.C., leaders in the House and Senate unveiled the "Honest Leadership & Open Government Act." Governor Dean was asked about the legislation and discussed how on the issue of opening up government and returning it to the people, the Democratic Party stands united.

When the Q&A ended, reporters descended upon the local representatives and candidates in attendance. I had a chance to catch up with old friends made during one of my several stints in the Buckeye State. As you can see, there was a lot of activity in the Rotunda:

I also had a chance to talk with one of the most important candidates in the country during the 2006 election cycle, Jennifer Brunner. Jennifer is running for Secretary of State in Ohio, the position currently held by J. Kenneth Blackwell. Need I say more? She is running unopposed in the primary, and you can expect to see much more about her in the coming months on the DNC blog.

I am in a Columbus airport right now, about to catch a flight back into Washington, D.C. I have so many more pictures and videos from today's event AND the wildly successful Democracy Bond-Holder meeting that took place after the petition signing in the Capitol. Hopefully I can get more up tonight, but if not, tomorrow will be a busy day. Keep checking in!

My soulmate- the great Jewish writer Sholom Aleichem wrote a book, called, "Some Laughter, Some Tears." Being in Ohio and Thinking About the theft of the 2004 election there brings both laughter and tears.
Laughter at the kind of would be Emperors Nero and Emperor Caligua that we have masquarading as President and Vice-President. The efforts of John Conyers, Stepanie Tubbs-Jones, Barbara Boxer, Lyndon LaRouche, and others to stop the 2004 Election Theft in Ohio dead in its tracks was critical in turning these latter day Roman Emperors into lame ducks.
Tears at the potential tragedy of them getting away with putting Sam Alito- a follower of Nazi crown jurist., Carl Schmitt, on the Supreme Court. Schmitt, the man who made Hitler's dictatorship and his genocide and murder "legal" is the God father of the Federalist Society which Alito, Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Kennedy subscribe to. So, look for these modern day Caliguas to create "emergencies" to justify getting rid of
the Constitution
So, let us all join to STOP ALITO's NOMINATION NOW- As, Al Gore, put it, "NO GO ALONG TO GET ALONG"
The Ohio Stop should remind the whole world that Cheney and Bush are illegimate and therefore they should take a hike quick..
They should not be allowed to make the Supreme Court a bunch of NAZI Carl Schmitt supporters.
Son't be a dumb Good German and Go Along Just cause the lying media says Alito is a shoo-in. Alito supports the Nazi Lover Carl Schmitt- Once everyone gets the guts to say that and tell the full truth--- Alito's Nomintation Will Be Crushed. Never Again Will the Liars Triumph

Honesty w/ the common good in mind is a must. Changing the material situation for many on the political left is important. But many on the right are also trying to starve the left's ability to respond. Consequently, the tax cuts, etc. need to be put in context for EVERYONE (I MEAN JOE IN KANSAS or MARY in the south...)-- trying to be too smart is a real mistake!!!

ne... here's my take

Material position and momentum

Chess has a lot in common w/ politics. One approaches chess w/ 3 variables (out side of fear, giving, etc.). They are material, position, and momentum.

The current Washington political landscape is driven by material. Material has been converted to power and to some extent momentum. Many believe that many on the right are not going after a long term fix to starve the left's ability to respond. This is just wishful thinking. That's what the large national debt is about. That and transferring the national assets into private hands. Who cares if the USA is in debt if you have already been given the assets???

Using political tactics (hopefully w/ a moral compass) the left is exposing the abuse of the material component and making a shift in the context of the discussion (that's position). And the left is also using the Internet to quickly change the momentum.

Anyway, that's just my take on things... I'm just hoping that the context becomes the common good. And the momentum is structured for the common good. And not some political hacks back room thoughts. The only way to respond is clearly and directly. This way no one has room to think about their response.

Obama Backs Clinton's Criticism of GOP

Sen. Barack Obama
and other black Democrats are defending Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's description of the House of Representatives as a "plantation." First lady Laura Bush says Clinton's remark was "ridiculous."

Considering who she's married to, I suppose Laura would be an expert on ridiculous? Isn't it odd that she is the only one they can trot out of the White Huse to make comments anymore. It's like they know none of the rest of them have any credibility.

I wonder if they realize that Laura's stock has been plummeting since that "you must keep your children on a regular schedule" remark at a Katrina shelter? Her born-again halo is slightly crooked just like the rest of the Republican culture of corruption.

I agree with Senator Clinton whole heartly! Many have said what they see in the Republicans are a strong desire to control peoples mind and actions, according to their so called beliefs. With absolutly no respect for others beliefs. Republicans say they believe in freedom of speech and freedom of faith, but their actions is exactly opposite of what they say.

A Republican called in on C-Span this morning spewing out venom about Senator Reed(D),taking
a contribution from an Indian tribe. Senator Reed has helped Indians for years. After the help, not before, they decided to contribute to his campaign. Can't you see the difference? Only a retarded person or a political activist won't acknowledge the difference. If you have always helped Indians and they recognize your help with a contribution is one thing and the other is Republicans being paid to help before they vote, etc.. And to stop another tribe from getting a license without cause is evil and criminal.

Now about Hillary Clinton, if all our Senators were as brilliant as she is,"what a wonderful world this would be!" If you can't see she has love for the people then you can't recognize love.

The Republicans can't seem to take it anymore. The truth hurts too much. Everytime we confront them with their own actions, they can only lash back with a tirade against the messenger. It's a sign of desperation. When Rove is indicted, expect the level of venom to reach a fever pitch.

Makes you almost want to help Trent Lott get even with them. But on second thought, I'd rather he just retired to rebuild his coastal estate with FEMA money that "just normal people" can't seem to get. I can see him now sitting on the porch telling his grandchildren how things used be before Bush stabbed him in the back and then started doing it to everyone else not part of his Pioneer ruling class.

Small gov't sounds attractive, but not at the expense of the common good. Helping those in need, providing help w/ education, and halting the re-distribution of wealth and the US's assests ibn the way to go..

The strategy that the democrats have used and are using is one of competancy. And investment that insures growth for all. The only way is to grow one's self out of a fix.

The current Washington interests (including many cowards on the Left) is not an investment strategy. The growth in the stock market is not about productivity but transfer of assets from the US to a few folks and coporations. The overall equation must include all and especially those in need. To think that YOU will not pay a heavy price for not helping people is economically foolish .... THAT's NOT REDUCING TAXES. Hello, why??? The national debt is now owned by many conutires including China. All the China Gov't has to do is to dump these laons and the US is in much worse shape than any terrorist may do. AND someone will pick up the tab for those in need and it will not be in a growth context.

Governor Dean,
Please come to New Hampshire and help Governor Lynch explain to our corrupt Republican Legislature what is meant by an "Ethics Bill". Our governor knows, but the Republicans gutted his bill and made up one of their own which has no relationship whatsoever to anything ethical.

I have been wanting to alert the common folks that our voice has been silenced by money from the wealthy! Don't you resent that you have no part nor lot in what your government does? Can you see that only the wealthy corporations are running your government? Is this what our founding fathers wanted when they wrote "government for the people of the people and by the people?" Why should they get to bribe the Officials with lots of money by writing the Bill for the corporations, by the corporations and of the Corporations? God told Simon the Sorcerer that he had no part nor lot in the matter, when he tried to buy the Gifts of the Holy Ghost. Don't you think the commoners feel that they have no part nor lot in our government? I say the Lobbyist should not have anymore influnce on our Officials than we do! God said take the least among you and let him judge the matter. Do you think the Troops that walk the streets of Iraq, dodging bullets and bombs would say it is ok for wealthy people to control him? Could you find anyone that made proverty wages would say, "yes, I am proud of our Officials for letting the corporations to run our government to their benefit and at my
suffering? Cut the giving down to what the least among us could give and set the wealthy on the same level. Then it would be equal rights and equal benefits.
