*Shrug*
Facts, reality, public sentiment... *shrug*
Bush shrugged off a recent Pentagon-contracted report which concluded the Army was overextended and the United States cannot sustain the pace of troop deployments to Iraq long enough to break the back of the insurgency there.
Bush shrugged off a report showing weaker-than-expected job growth on Friday and declared that "the American economy heads into 2006 with a full head of steam."
Amid the increasing criticism and desperation, Bush shrugged off questions about a National Guard depleted by active duty in Iraq. The guard, said Bush, can fight a war and react to hurricane devastation simultaneously.
The Post/ABC survey indicated that 58 percent of Americans have doubts about Bush's honesty, marking the first time in his presidency that more than half the country questioned his integrity.Bush shrugged off the numbers, saying that if he works hard enough things will take care of themselves.
Bush shrugged off a question about detainees being sent by the United States back to their home countries where they could be subject to torture.
What he failed to address were the Academy's central conclusions: That global warming is a real threat, that it has intensified in the past 20 years and that greenhouse gases like CO2 are the most likely cause. When the administration's own EPA fortified these facts in 2002, placing even clearer blame on power plant emissions for causing climate change, President Bush shrugged off the findings as a "report put out by the bureaucracy."
One of the couple's dogs, Spot, rolled across the carpet as Bush shrugged off suggestions that bin Laden slipped away from U.S. forces during cease fire talks in Afghanistan."I don't know where he is. I hadn't heard much from him recently, which means he could be in a cave that doesn't have an opening to it anymore; or could be in a cave where he can get out or may have tried to slither out into neighboring Pakistan. We don't know," the president said.
"But I will tell you this: We're going to find him."

At the Bush press conference on 1/26/06, he stated why people get rid of government leaders (in that case Fateh in Palestine):
1. To be rid corruption.
2. To have leaders who give them education for their children and
3. To have a system that provides them with medical care.
The Dems need to play this one over and over, in a campaign to get rid of Bush and his Fateh/Republican cronies. If the Dems were able to fully expose the corruption and incompetence of Bush, from the first Energy Policies that reduced government royalties paid by energy companies by $700 million, to the failure to respond to FBI, Paul O'Neil's, NSA's Richard Clark and CIA's Tenant's predictions of the 9/11 attach on the World Trade Center, to FEMA's prediction that Katrina would submerge New Orleans for weeks, and all of the scandels in between, it would become obvious how and why this administration must be removed.
However, the Democratic leadership, including Dr. Dean, presumably does not read these blogs, and itself is out of touch with how to win the current political dog fight that. Unfortunately for all Americans, if they do not win, Bush and his corrupt administration will bankrupt a nd destroy our democracy and civil rights for generations.
The Dems are failing us by not being able to rally the party to protect the constitution. How and why is Byrd voting for Alieto. Where is the support of a filabuster of the Alieto nomination, that should force Frist to his Nuclear Option. That was how Clinton won against Gingrich, by calling his bluff on Congresses stalling the budget. The incompetence and inability of the Dems is very clear, and they need to figure this one out ASAP. Nadar may be the only answer, as a vote for Dems may be the wasted vote once Alieto gets in. The Dems need to hear that we will leave this party unless it is responsive to our needs and our nation.
Well, it's pretty clear that he's got to be Shrug from now on.
On another note, how do you like this

Governor Dean said he likes Tim Russert, considers him a friend. I wonder if he has read this exchange from this morning on the Today Show. They are shameless. We are proud to have a chairman who speaks out firmly, but the media and some of the other Democrats are having trouble handling the truth.
We have collected a number of other Shrub Shrugs in this thread at Democratic Underground.

More Shrub Shrugs. THIS link should work.
HOT TIP!
I just spoke to one of Feinstein's assistants in the San Francisco office and he said, "she's going to filibuster!"
Why is it that there is not a single mention in the last couple of days about the Alito nomination?
Why is it that 8 so-called Democratic Senators will not support a filibuster?
I don't know the answer to these questions, but I know that their decision has made one decision easy for me: I will not be renewing my membership in the DNC this year.
We can't expect this party to lead the nation if it won't lead on the issue of Alito's nomination being a horrible thing for our nation.
The party will get my vote by default, but it won't get my money this year.
Right at this moment, our young people are being wounded, sickened, killed in Bush's Iraq Scam -- if not by bullets, then by depleted uranium! Right now, we are being lied to about the fate of our New Orleans citizens, both those alive and dead. Right now the Bush Administration is falsely "detaining" and torturing innocent people in hidden places!!! Right now the Oil Industry continues to overcharge all of us in a monumental profiteering scheme! Right now the lack of diplomacy and trustworthiness the Bush Administration has displayed now yields a worldwide loss of respect for the U.S.! Right now we are faced with a totalitarian-style take-over of our Judiciary!!! And it goes on and on, proving this is a Rogue Menace of a "presidency", uncontrolled by its own majority of Republicans since their GOP is torn asunder by extremists and conmen.
And what of our Democrats? Circumstances present the perfect opportunity to prove the Democratic Party has the SOLIDARITY and enlightened thinking to stick together at a point in history that can undo all we've worked for FOR GENERATIONS!!!! And the Democrats are FAILING!!! Our party is torn apart by Corporatism and Centrist Claptrap and looks as useless as the GOP.
If the Democrats don't pull this FILIBUSTER of ALITO together this weekend, be aware that it is OVER. No more opportunities will be presented for standing before this Despotic Juggernaut!!!!!
WAKE UP AND GET SOME SOLIDARITY ON THIS, OR ADMIT YOU ARE FOOLS NOT WORTHY OF YOUR POSITIONS OF TRUST!!!
Well, I guess maybe we'll move here since Tim has not provided a weekend thread yet?
Welcome to the WEEKEND at the DNC!!
THANK YOU Senators KERRY, CLINTON AND REID FOR SUPPORTING A FILIBUSTER!!
Dear Senator Byrd (and the other 7 Dems who will not filabuster Alito):
Your (Byrd's) legacy as a champion of our Democratic values will go down in flames, if you both vote for Mr. Alito's confirmation and do not support the filabuster. Our Democracy is at stake with illegal wiretaps and the rights of individual citizens being abused for political purposes. Not to mention that our National Treasury is being diverted to those corporate interests who continue to support this Presidency and the Republican Party.
Judge Alieto has clearly evidenced by his Unitary Executive belief's and other views that he will continue to enable the Executive branch to trample the Democratic system, and the rights of American citizens to be safe from illegal searchs and seizeures. I have serveral clients upper middle class white clients, of modest means, who are registered Republican, who are now facing the abuses of a criminal justice system, that has no heart or mercy and that abuses witnesses who can testify as to their innocence in the same way that they abused Susan McDougal and Bill Clinton to find a basis for impeachment.
University professors are threatened with loss of their grants, due to their political views. We are moving toward an Orwellian era, that will crush any opposition to the graft and theft of our national treasury and our civil liberties. You know of the acts that this administration has taken from the first Energy Policies that reduced government royalties paid by energy companies by $700 million, to the failure to respond to FBI, Paul O'Neil's, NSA's Richard Clark and CIA's Tenant's predictions of the 9/11 attach on the World Trade Center, to FEMA's prediction that Katrina would submerge New Orleans for weeks, and all of the scandels in between. Alieto will protect these acts from challenge, and protect the wealthy elite who are controlling Mr. Bush and the Republican party with their money and favortism.
Your legacy by not rejecting this blatant threat to our Democracy, and not supporting the Filabuster, will render your years in the Senate as hyprocrisy and a waste.
I can only hope and pray that you can and will see what is happening to our democracy, and take all steps and exercise all powers to protect our Constitution and the rights of our citizens.
God save us all. God save you from making this tragic mistake.
God? puhleassssssssse!
it's the fundagelicals that have turned this nation into the crapfest its turned into imo.
The GOD of the Universe is way too busy to pander to our mess! We need to prove we can fix this on our own! PEOPLE NEED TO STAND UP for THEMSELVES!!

More Americans Favor Impeaching Bush, Poll Says
Today's topic: Domestic spying
by Jim Puzzanghera
WASHINGTON - The word "impeachment" is popping up increasingly these days and not just off the lips of liberal activists spouting predictable bumper-sticker slogans.
After the unfounded claims about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and recent news of domestic spying without warrants, mainstream politicians and ordinary voters are talking openly about the possibility that President Bush could be impeached. So is at least one powerful senator, Arlen Specter, R-Pa., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
So far, it's just talk. With Republicans controlling Congress, and memories still fresh of the bitter fight and national distraction inflamed by former President Clinton's 1998 impeachment, even the launching of an official inquiry is a very long shot.
But a poll released last week by Zogby International showed 52 percent of American adults thought Congress should consider impeaching Bush if he wiretapped U.S. citizens without court approval, including 59 percent of independents and 23 percent of Republicans. (The survey had a margin of error of 2.9 percentage points.)
Given those numbers, impeachment could become an issue in this fall's congressional elections, and dramatically raise the stakes. If Democrats win control of the House of Representatives, a leading proponent of starting an official impeachment inquiry, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., would become chairman of the House committee that could pursue it.
Conyers introduced legislation last month to create a special panel to investigate the Bush administration's alleged manipulation of pre-Iraq war intelligence and "make recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment."
He's not the only one dropping the "I word." A day later, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., wrote to four presidential scholars asking whether domestic spying by the National Security Agency was an impeachable offense.
Former Vice President Al Gore said last week that the NSA wiretapping could be an impeachable offense.
Bush contends that he holds authority as commander in chief to order the eavesdropping on international calls of terrorism suspects without court approval. He also claims that Congress' resolution authorizing him to use force against terrorists implicitly authorized his NSA spying.
But a 1978 law requires court-issued warrants for wiretapping people in the United States. And many in Congress, along with the non-partisan Congressional Research Service, said Bush is on shaky legal ground in ordering NSA spying without warrants as required by the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
Tucker Bounds, a Republican National Committee official, said impeachment talk is "nonsense."
But asked Jan. 15 what recourse there would be if Bush broke or ignored the law in authorizing wiretaps, Senate Judiciary Committee chair Specter mentioned impeachment.
"I'm not suggesting remotely that there's any basis, but you're asking, really, theory, what's the remedy?" he said on ABC's This Week. "Impeachment is the remedy."
Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., said of a Bush impeachment, "I'm not saying it would happen, but I think it should be explored." She was one of a handful of House members to co-sponsor Conyers' bill, which is unlikely to get a hearing or vote as long as Republicans rule the House of Representatives.
Stanford University historian Jack Rakove, a constitutional expert, said breaking the law on domestic spying would qualify as an impeachable offense, but that Congress should be hesitant to pursue it. The Clinton impeachment was a major distraction for the nation, he said. Some have suggested it hurt the U.S. effort against al-Qaida before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Despite such concerns, some liberal activists say it's time to impeach Bush. Bob Fertik, president of Democrats.com, has formed ImpeachPAC to fund campaigns of congressional candidates who support impeachment. It has raised more than $52,000 in 10 weeks.
"If the truth comes out," Fertik said, "there will be an open-and-shut case for a high crime of breaking the law."

Urge Them to Support Sen. Kerry's Filibuster Effort!
If you can't get through by phone, send in a fax through PFAW and email EVERYONE you know, make sure the link is posted on all the other blogs you read, and be the media.
I was such a dreamer when I imagined what the bush years would be like if we unplugged the cable t.v. stations for a month or two...even just a million or so...surely there were that many with their eyes open on election night.
this is tedious for me...this shock at the "MSM" and the petty, daily reports that it might not be a tool of the facist regime.
duh, hello? so forgive my anger, but understand this: we are all doing what we can to support Kerry and Kennedy...a pair with a pair! if it works, cool. if it doesn't...unplug the damned cable
they will ASK you why you're cancelling. LET'S HAVE A FREAKING UNIFIED MESSAGE
we will never have another opportunity at midterms if the media controls the message without understanding that we are disciplined enough to stand together the way they did during the bus boycott...
and it's damned pitiful that all it takes is to cut off the propaganda machine for a month or two
or not...ya know...gasp! katie isn't asking tough questions...o my, i thought tim russert was my friend...
wtf is that?

back OFF! do what you need to do and take care for your OWN business.
I have some ruby rings, so maybe I'll rub those together.
As for Kerry, he lost my respect (but not my vote) in 04 when he stated that he believed marriage should be between a man and a woman. But if he continues how he's going now, standing up against the "Insane Clown Possey" Administration, then I could bet back behind him again.
I'm going to go watch TV. Kerry is speaking on cspan. You cats enjoy yourselves.
Fade - ok lets start OVER
I take it you were NOT trying to tell me what to do earlier only making a suggestion to the group to do something YOU considered helpful.
am I correct? you meant no disrespect ?

Filibuster Alito, unless you want to kiss our democracy, freedom, privacy, and civil rights goodbye, and hand them over to the unitary executive privilege aka a dictatorship.
Use the filibuster to show the American people why they absolutely must wake up and smell the stench from this government. Use the filibuster to inform the American people why they cannot remain complacent and uninvolved, if they want to continue living ia a democracy. Use the filibuster to show the American people how their privacy -- everything about their lives -- will be compromised if they do not inform themselves with REAL news, not faux news.
Use the filibuster to tell the media that there are excruciatingly important events taking place in our country, in this world, that need to be covered more than rehashing Aruba, Scott Peterson, Michael Jackson, the latest titilatting sex scandal, the cruiseline mystery, and whatever other diverting fluff they can dig up to satisfy the vicarious pleasures of their viewers -- and have the audacity to call their dribble "news". What shame on the U.S. television "news" media, to participate in this scam against our country and world peace and security! We need an informed electorate for our democracy. The best people can do now if they are searching for real news on TV is to hunt for C-SPAN or the BBC. Use the filibuster to tell the American people that misinformation is the foe of democracy.
Use the filibuster to read passages from all the good books that talk about peace, understanding, tolerance, acceptance, and communication, and what these good books say about those who opt for violence, falsehoods, and corruption to get what they want. Read our constitution, especially the passages that talk about our civil rights, equality, balance of powers, the structure of our government, one person-one vote.
Use the filibuster to make a statement; to educate and inform; to get angry and fight, really fight, for what is good in our country and which no political party can trample upon. Make no apologies for anger -- it is well needed and appropriate at this time of corruption and the usurping of power by this executive branch. A simple "no" vote is not enough, even though the Bush PR dogs will be ready with their "partisan politics" talking points, passed out to their talking heads, if there is a filibuster. Tell America that you expect nothing less from the well oiled and funded misinformation machine of the Bush Administration.
Alito seems like a nice man, but he cannot see how his views on unitary executive privilege will devastate this country, allowing abuse of power to run amok.
bump, thump, creak
that's me falling over, hitting my head, and my knee creaking as i climbed back up...you're HOME?
wow, congratulations! and you, sir, are one of the things that motivated me to get out into the real world this week.

That's enough to make me want to soil my drawers. That cost is terrible, the tax cuts are dumb.

Having a mate doesn't mean marriage to me. Not a fan of the M word probably because I've tried it twice and figure that was enough of a shot.
I'm a fan of communal living! LOL with the right group of people. Probably why I survived basic training.
Hi Kathleen,
Very well said!! I love the idea of reading the constitution during the filibuster.
dell, i've got a couple a spare "depends" here fer ya...

sandy is this the working open thread? gonna move my posts over here.
well is seems the works were a bit gummed up last night. be this the tread. with so much partisan bickering and bad blood these days its nice to finally find a topic on which all americans both democrat and republican agree:
Most Americans want Bush reveal lobbyist ties: poll
Sat Jan 28, 2006 5:37 AM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three in four Americans want President George W. Bush to disclose his aides' links with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, a demand the White House has rejected so far, according to a poll published on Saturday.
The Washington Post said the demand was supported by clear majorities of both Republicans and Democrats in the Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted between January 23 and January 26.
Abramoff pleaded guilty to fraud charges this month and agreed to help U.S. prosecutors in a corruption probe that has sparked calls for reform of the Washington practice of lobbying lawmakers with donations and favors to influence legislation.
At a White House news conference on Thursday, Bush said he did not know Abramoff and would not release photographs in which the two appeared together.
He said the release of the photographs would be used for "pure political purposes" by Democrats.
The Washington Post said 76 percent of those surveyed said Bush should release lists of all meetings between his aides and Abramoff. Eighteen percent disagreed.
"Two in three Republicans joined with eight in 10 Democrats and political independents in favoring disclosure," the paper said.
It said 1,002 people were interviewed and the poll's margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Friday, January 27, 2006; Posted: 8:22 a.m. EST (13:22 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A majority of Americans are more likely to vote for a candidate in November's congressional elections who opposes President Bush, and 58 percent consider his second term a failure so far, according to a poll released Thursday.
Fewer people consider Bush to be honest and trustworthy now than did a year ago, and 53 percent said they believe his administration deliberately misled the public about Iraq's purported weapons program before the U.S. invasion in 2003, the CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll found.

Kerry Defends Senate Filibuster on Alito as 'a Vote of History'

Sen. John F. Kerry cut short a European trip yesterday and returned to Washington, where he was greeted with praise from liberal groups and ridicule from Republicans for his role in postponing a confirmation vote for Supreme Court nominee Samuel A. Alito Jr.
In a largely empty Capitol, Kerry (D-Mass.) defended his call for a filibuster that effectively delayed until Tuesday the Senate confirmation vote, which both parties say Alito will win. "Why are we so compelled to accept in such a rush a nominee who has so clearly been chosen for political and ideological reasons?" Kerry said in a 30-minute floor speech. "This is not the vote of Monday afternoon. This is a vote of history."

hey kids the washington post has a piece on how the evil commie liberal bloggers ( hands up please ) are messin with the great democratic centrist plan to take back the country thru stealth efforts such as supporting putting roberts and alito on the court so they can't be accused of being too "way out":
Blogs Attack From Left as Democrats Reach for Center

Democrats are getting an early glimpse of an intraparty rift that could complicate efforts to win back the White House: fiery liberals raising their voices on Web sites and in interest groups vs. elected officials trying to appeal to a much broader audience.
These activists -- spearheaded by battle-ready bloggers and making their influence felt through relentless e-mail campaigns -- have denounced what they regard as a flaccid Democratic response to the Supreme Court fight, President Bush's upcoming State of the Union address and the Iraq war. In every case, they have portrayed party leaders as gutless sellouts.
where the f_ _ _ is everybody?
i like this ending part of the piece i posted at 8:36am:
"John Kerry is beginning to bring the traditional Democratic leadership in Washington together with the untraditional netroots activists of the country," James Boyce wrote on the Huffington Post. "A man often accused of being the ultimate Washington insider looked outside of the beltway and saw the concern, in fact, the distress among literally millions of online Democrats."
Other Democrats, Boyce wrote, "triangulated, fabricated, postulated and capitulated."
Morning, Gregg. Thanks for leaving directions on the last blog. Otherwise, I would still be there, talking to myself.
Good Morning Greg and Cyn! I also must say thank you greg for the little trail of bread crumbs.

Democrats Split Over Filibuster On Alito
By Charles Babington
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, January 27, 2006
Several prominent Democratic senators called for a filibuster of Samuel A. Alito Jr.'s Supreme Court nomination yesterday, exposing a deep divide in the party even as they delighted the party's liberal base.
* * *
The divide is between the Beltway Democrats and the rest of us living back home with their failure to act on our behalf.
It's obvious to anyone who has attended a township meeting lately that the old party regulars and the the new activists are all tired of playing the game the way our leaders in Washington do....we want to start winning again.
If those who say they represent us in Congress continue to do the same stupid things over and over, we are going to continue losing....which is odd. Since in the last two presidential elections we almost won (did win according to some). It appears that we have the ear of a very, very large constituency which the Beltways are ignoring.
I beleive that we are on the right track by starting at the bottom to re-build support among our neighbors at the grassroots level. In the meantime, we would at least like to see some acknowledgement from our reps in Washington that they know people are still counting on them to show some solidarity...with each other...and with us.
I'm not going to say anything else on this matter. The die has been cast. We move forward, with or without them.
Great op-ed by Jeff Faux (of Economic Policy Institute) concerning globalization:
The media language we use to talk to each other about globalization hides its class structure. The press consistently talks about national “interest” without defining who exactly is getting what. Thus, American workers are told that the “Chinese” are taking their jobs. But the China threat is, in fact, another global business partnership—this one between commissars who supply the cheap labor and the United States and other foreign capitalists who supply the technology and two-thirds of the capital used to finance China’s exports. The rest of the world calls this “neoliberalism,” a term unknown among America’s media “internationalists.”
The politics of the global marketplace are a one-party system. The opposition to Davos is unorganized globally. What might be called the Party of Porto Alegre—the NGOs who meet at the same time in Brazil—is politically marginal. The trade union movement’s effort to organize the workers of the world is at best at a very early stage.
Still, there may be some bad new ahead for Davos. After a quarter of a century, the world is beginning to resist policies that have shifted wealth and power away from people who work for a living to those who invest. Scarcely a day goes by without a major riot somewhere in China, Indonesia and elsewhere in Asia. In South America, anti-neoliberal parties have come to power in Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela and Argentina—and already have slowed down the effort to extend NAFTA to the rest of the hemisphere. Very close to home, a leftist candidate is leading in the campaign for Mexico’s next president.
But perhaps more important, Davos’ chief champion—the U.S. governing class—is in trouble. The opposition to the war in Iraq has demonstrated the limits of America’s willingness to send its children to die in order to force the world’s cultures into one vast shopping mall. And the looming crisis of America’s foreign debt will cramp the ability of our elites to use the countries’ economic power to support their global corporate backers. The erosion of the American social contract—already being reflected in stagnant wages, financial insecurity and collapsing health care system—could soon force the governing class to pay more attention to Bloomington, Ill., than to Baghdad, Iraq.
Globalization will not go away. Improvements in communication and transportation will continue to make the world smaller for as far into the future as we can see. Nor will economic classes soon disappear. The question is, as always, who sets the rules and in whose interests? So although the parties at Davos may not be over, the rest of the world seems less willing to pay for them.

I think globalization is the battleground of the 21th century. There will political, economic and social upheavals unlike anything previously seen in history. Our country and indeed the world is definitely not ready for this.
If those who say they represent us in Congress continue to do the same stupid things over and over, we are going to continue losing....which is odd. Since in the last two presidential elections we almost won (did win according to some). It appears that we have the ear of a very, very large constituency which the Beltways are ignoring.

I am reminded of what Jim Hightower is fond of saying:
If the Democrats want to win, all they have to do is go talk to the people! (and listen to them as well of course)
A man often accused of being the ultimate Washington insider looked outside of the beltway and saw the concern, in fact, the distress among literally millions of online Democrats."

LOL
rjsnj, i think what kerry learned was that the left has more energy and more committment to working to save the country from the religious nuts and greed mongers than any other group. he knows it was the left that broke their asses in pennsylvina and ohio and gave him a shot even though many of them were for dean. i think what he learned from dean was the power of the internet. but at the end of the day we have to remember it was kerry not dean or gore or clinton ( all of whom i value dearly ) who was in veterans against the war, who threw his medals away in protest and who spoke loudly, clearly and bravely to the congress of the united states. he has been a hero for a long time and in this very fucked up national gestalt, we find ourselves was mocked for it. but here he is standing up while biden and clinton and nelson and the rest are ducking and diving and parsing....and frankly dean is a bit weak on the filibuster as far as i am concerned...so say what you will about kerry it but is clear he wants to be president real bad and i for one hope he makes it.
These activists -- spearheaded by battle-ready bloggers and making their influence felt through relentless e-mail campaigns -- have denounced what they regard as a flaccid Democratic response to the Supreme Court fight, President Bush's upcoming State of the Union address and the Iraq war. Well, well, well ... we are being noticed by the MSM. I am oh so honored.
I think we are the "moral majority" in this country not the foaming at the mouth phoney right wing zealots!
Centrists? Jim Hightower has a good saying for them:
There is nothing in the middle of the road except a yellow line and dead armadillos.

hi gregg,
That describes yours truly. I knocked on every door in Philadelphia TWICE - damn, my hand still aches. I was out in Youngstown Ohio the last week of the election.
Absolutely, we are the ones with the motivation because we have conviction! The so-called "centrists" are trying to appease way too much. Notice how the foaming at the mouth right wing zealots didn't appease at all! They kept banging away, organizing and now the Pugs have to pay some attention to them.
Kerry has definitely caught on.
rjsnj, good for you. i wan not as productive but did alot of phone work for moveon and sent a money....this time i want to help out with spitzer and the effort to dump some new york repub congressfolks.
gotta go for now. enjoy the day.

gregg, phone calls are important too. Sometimes you actually get more done that way. In poorer areas, knocking doors is important because people often have no telephone!
Good luck with Spitzer and races against other ny repubs. I think Spitzer is a good man.
Well, let see if there is anything new on the filibuster ...
hello bloggers!! I havent watched much news this week but I saw that clinton ass kisser paul begala on the steven cober show last night. he is still rambling about the dems needing a spine. do they have to steal all of Howard's best lines? remember the kerry quote..."wrong war wrong place wrong time" I did read kerry's blog post at KOS. He said teresa reads the blogs. that's cool. I like her. I dont like begala or his siamese twin carville. and begala said he hopes hillary will run. what a horrible idea. I cant keep saying that often enough. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!! I am stunned that hamas has taken over the palestinian government. crazy. they brag about the suicide bombings they commit and now they are in charge? maybe this is the end of the world but we have to GO OUT SWINGING!!!! BETTER TO DIE ON YOUR FEET THAN TO LIVE ON YOUR KNEES!!!
have a great weekend everyone!
Good Morning everyone ;-)
http://www.democrats.com/we-can-stop-alito
we can stop alito this weekend!
From Bob Fertik:
I believe we really can stop Alito by Monday at 4:30 p.m. - but here's what we must do.
1. Ignore the media whores. Karl Rove is feeding them lies as he always does, and they are swallowing those lies as they always do. The only media that matters is the media we are creating right here by calling each Senator and getting a YES or NO statement from them.
2. Keep calling the Senators who are undecided or opposed to a filibuster. You can call their DC office all weekend and leave polite but firm voicemails urging the Senators to support Kerry's filibuster. When offices open on Monday 9 a.m. ET, make another round of calls. Let's shut down the Capitol switchboard on Monday!
3. Call the DNC (202-863-8000) and the DSCC (202-224-2447) and tell them your 2006 contributions will depend on the success of the Alito filibuster. Tell them they need to get every Democratic Senator on board.
4. Wake up the sleeping bloggers. Where are the biggest blogs, including DailyKos.com, TalkingPointsMemo.com, CrooksandLiars.com, and AmericaBlog.com? (Complaining about how Democrats played last week won't cut it -we're in the Super Bowl and we can win this damn game if we get Democrats to play their best game on Monday - and hopefully the rest of this coming week.) Thanks to Agonist, BobGeiger, BradBlog, BuzzFlash, CultureKitchen, The Democratic Daily, DemocraticUnderground, Eschaton, Firedoglake, Mahablog, MakeThemAccountable, Mark Crispin Miller, NewsDissector, PoliticalWire, RudePundit, Vichy Democrats and everyone else who's plugging this.
5. Lend a hand to real-world groups like NOW, People for the American Way, Feminist Majority, Backbone Campaign, Moveon, Planned Parenthood, Progressive Democrats of America, and Working Assets Long Distance, which have worked tirelessly for two months to Stop Alito.
6. Call talk shows like Air America, C-SPAN, etc. and talk about what we're doing on this blog and how we're killing ourselves to stop Alito - and how we can win if everyone who cares about the future of our Democracy joins us.
7. Keep hope alive - because American Democracy is worth it!!!
Bob Fertik
I dont like begala or his siamese twin carville. and begala said he hopes hillary will run. what a horrible idea.

I agree on all points:
begala + carville = too influenced by the DLC
I hear that Carville is dropping out of politics - something about becoming a sports commentator (?).
good morning, y'all,
ez--that's a good post...but one of the things i realized monday, when i got absolutely fired up into campaign mode, was that there is too wide a gap between the "bloggers" and the regular people who don't know what we find out here on the internets.
the interesting thing is, they realize "MSM" is bull...but they don't have the time to devote to blogging (many single women...kidz, 2 jobs) or they don't have computers (gasp--yes, we are part of the elite middle class here, guys...) or they don't have the tech background to navigate the blogs (as in my senior citizen buddies across the street at the nursing home)
a while ago, there was an editorial posted by Pam B that talked about the gap between the knowledge base of the bloggers and the people that rely on t.v. for their news...we already knew about Fox news...but some of us (more cynical ones, such as fade) noticed that the whole damned corporate media was responsible for our tarnished image and the perpetuation of falsehood...so
what to do? what to do?
i went back to the "happy warrior" Paul Wellstone methodology--and it works
i'm thinkin' there aren't too many bloggers that haven't contacted, and enlisted family and friends...but what about a few other options to bring more into the fold...
i had photocopied phone numbers and a script, courtesty of PFAW and distributed them at the VFW Hall--where i got a fish fry after a little schmoozing...those trips to the gym really pay off
this morning i made a freeway blogger sign that says "veto alito"--and i'm on my way to get that up and go to a few other places where there are folks congregating...plus tonight, i'll hit a few bars with one of my peeps who is as motivated as i am...
we've got to get outside our comfort zone on this...and the prescription drugs problem child of the chimporer combined with the attack on social security worked very well with seniors.
i hope you will share any ideas you might have on "guerilla marketing" strategies...we've got time
Dick Durbin, one of the first to stand up for Kerry, is da bomb...Kerry--you are my leader and i love, respect and support you and Teresa...you are still my president and first lady...and i am one grateful democrat...thank you! and thank you PFAW!
Well since it looks like folks are posting here, I put this on the open thread.
Gregg, this kind of fits into what you posted above:
Democrats are getting an early glimpse of an intraparty rift that could complicate efforts to win back the White House: fiery liberals raising their voices on Web sites and in interest groups vs. elected officials trying to appeal to a much broader audience.
A post from the open thread said:
We are handing it away on social issues. Had not gay marriage been a ballot question in Ohio, maybe you would have seen a Kerry win in Ohio. He himself was pro civil union but anti gay marriage but the association with liberal holdings did him in.
Pat-
It's hard to read through what a person's intentions are when they post comments and whether they are meant kind or not so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Let me say this though, I was told on another blog because I was upset about Frist bringing back the Federal Marriage Amendment for another vote (I don't think it's too ironic that it's coming around with Alito looking like a shoe-in; it's not like we can win our rights through the courts now) that basically we (meaning gays and lesbians) need to sit down and shut up for the common good.
Gays need to be willing to give up their rights or hope of rights for the next 50-60 years so everyone else can get what they need.
No, I'm not kidding. I was really told this.
I'm hearing Kerry is the Great Liberal!!! The best we've got!! Oh joy, someone who wants me to have a second-class status is a LIBERAL!!! For Christ's sake, since when was that a liberal belief? Could it be since we have no Dems with any guts or any balls to stand up for minority rights?
The issues that affect the gay community and that are constantly beating against us go far deeper than marriage equality. For example, in Alaska, there is a ban on gay marriage but Republican lawmakers say that's not enough. They want to ban gay partner benefits too. You know, having medical coverage for your partner is too damn close to equal.
If this party doesn't draw a line and stand firm for gay rights, do you really think that Republicans will EVER stop? This has been the case over and over again. We run from the issue and run scared and the Republicans keep recreating the boundary of "acceptable" for everyone.
What's so hard about this for so-called liberals? It's an issue I can't fathom. It's a fear and excuse me, a pansy-ass pussiness, I can't comprehend. Being liberal doesn't mean being weak. It actually means you have to be stronger and tougher because you stand up for those that can't stand up for themselves.
My fear is this, we can't even scare up enough Dems to care about women losing choice over their bodies or invasion of privacy with this Alito nomination. They're scared to even do THAT!!! What makes me think that Dems will fight for less than 10% of the population? We have been pushing for weeks for the Dems to stop the Alito confirmation and they still can't get it together. Will Dems here in general put forth the same effort to stop the FMA? I don't know. It doesn't affect them so I don't know. And that's what scares me. We've been doing a lot of begging, pleading, and pushing lately with little result. Will anything less stop the FMA?
I don't bet on it. I think this party is so scared out its mind that it'll throw whoever it can under the train to save itself. I think we are the easiest and safest target.
Excuse this long post, but I had to get this off of my chest. It ate at me really bad last night.

Morning all:
That article Gregg posted at 8:36AM should be required reading for all.
a piece from it:
The question Democrats will debate over the next few years is whether the prevailing views of liberal activists on the war, the role of religion in politics and budget policies will help or hinder efforts to recapture the presidency and Congress.
Even if they disagree with their positions, Democratic candidates recognize from the Dean experience the power of the activists to raise money and infuse a campaign with their energy. On the flip side, the Alito and Kaine episodes serve as a cautionary tales of what can happen to politicians when they spurn the blogs.
Even if you did not like Howard, his "You Have the Power" is now being put to the test.
My morning paper says that Schummer and Reid are squaking that filibuster will not fly, not enough votes, blah, blah. WHY aren't the two of them on the friggin phone, telling Byrd, Nelson, Landrieu, Tim Johnson that THIS issue is one for the Country, not just for their Red States. Sometimes, a politician has to decide what is for the best for more than just his constituents, which in these cases are Religious Righters wanting the courts to start turning back what was worked SO hard for over the last 60 years.

re: Blogs Attack From Left as Democrats Reach for Center, see gregg @ 8:33
There simple must be more than two (2) national parties trying desperately to imitate each other. I want my own party-(the Might As Well Party?). Why should bloggers be made out as divisive when we're giving voice to the viewpoint of many millions of people. Why should we be dismissed for not kowtowing to the strategies of groups like the DLCC, who are attempting to seize victory through imitation. I wanna be me! I just gotta be me!
Campaign finance and regulation of lobbyists is a smokescreen- the real solution is opening the gates of the playing field to alternative voices. More representation is better represenation, i say.
The idiot is still wired by Rove!
Remember the Bulgegate scandal, when President Bush cheated during the debates with John Kerry by having someone (perhaps Karl Rove) feeding him talking points through an earpiece? Remember the wires snaking down his back? Well...it seems he's still at it. This speech about Sam Alito seemed pretty strange right from the start and seemed good fodder for sampling for a song...The process of listening to the speech many times during production of this track eventually brought home the fact that Bush is still wired! The evidence of this is the intro to the track or can be heard about 20 seconds into this video. Bush seems to tell the voice in his earphones to "shh." Unless someone else has a good explanation why he would stop in the middle of "he is well qualified" to throw in a "shh," it would seem quite clear that he still needs outside help, even to appear to be a real President.
{{{callie}}}
i mentioned this before, but they've got a "gay-haters R us" bill initiative right here in ILLINOIS...home of Dick Durbin, Barack Obama and Governor Rod Blagojevich...the democratic macho men of our party! These guys all have cojones...and have stood up for equal rights across the board.
focus and direct your righteous anger on the evil attempt to stir up the homophobes and whackojeezicals...we're on your side
don't confuse the success of the "defense of marriage" ballot initiatives of the forces of evil with the discussion of strategic ways to combat that...if you can
you either belong here, or you're on your own...and frankly--we need your kickin' ass over heah!! and you need us!! like it or not, we've got each other or we got nuttin', honey
keep ranting, setting us straight and above all--FIGHTING--cuz with what's happening right now, with Kerry leading this filibuster--there is hope
and this is the time to empower others with it, before that nixon-loving freak becomes a lifetime appointee--political problems will not exist if he's on the court...they will have it sewed up

I have been wondering about that. I expected more outrage from women on Alito. I think many foolishly believe that Roe v Wade will never get overthrown. But, it doesn't have to be overthrown completely to render it essentially meaningless ... States can are already making laws that chip away so much that the decision may become a hallow shell.
As if that isn't bad enough, once the basis for Roe is eroded, the basis for many other privacy based decisions is in doubt - Griswald v Connecticut (contraception) is a real frightening possibility.
The foaming at the mouth religious right snake charmers may turn the clock back 100 years or more!
I am in favor of gay marraiges and rights. It is a fundamental civil liberty that is at stake. The possibility of all sorts of draconian laws being passed makes me shudder.
