What a Difference 30 Minutes Makes

The place is really filling up quickly and there is quite a line gathering out both doors into Satisfaction restaurant. There is a voter registration table, local Durham Democratic Party table and banners, and a consistent buzz filling the room. People are excited in North Carolina tonight. Here are some more photos:

Tim-

I'm a Duke student, and you're just a couple blocks away from campus. Worth swinging by right now? Is Sati's (what we call Satisfaction) going to be completely filled? Keep up the good work, and next time you're in town, let the campus groups know!!

Ben,

I'll be here for a few more hours if you want to share a drink or something. I'm the guy wearing a suit... Unfortunately, the place is clearing out -- I guess Governor Dean was the occassion and not the SOTU.

42 Democrats voted against Alito, a sufficient number to sustain a filibuster or to force the Republicans to follow through on their threat to blow up the cloture rule (even if Chaffee had flipped his vote on a cloture vote).

So there it is - evidence of EXACTLY what is wrong with this party. No will, no courage, no principles. Plenty of posturing ("Hey - I voted against Alito, right?" and "Hey - I actually CALLED for a filibuster - remember, Hillary?"), but not enough gonad among the lot of them to make a fight on principle - even at the cost of...HORRORS!!!!...losing.

You think I'm "cynical," boys and girls? There's nothing more cynical than a cowardly, capitulating elected Democrat. All nuance, no guts. No principle worth fighting for except the principle of triangulating themselves into reelection.

What a pathetic bunch. All they have to offer is that they are the "alternative" to Republicans, but when it comes time to put up and prove that they really do offer an alternative, they hide under tables.

Fuck the Democratic Party. Every time these useless, spineless turds do something like this, another three hundred thousand voters - the poor, the unemployed, the defenseless - shrug their shoulders and say "What the fuck - if they're not going to do anything for me then I might as well vote for Republicans - crumbs are better than nothing."

Howard - quit your day job and go third party. This truly is the end of the Road to Nowhere.

Well I know from this State of the Union is that I will never see those 51 minutes of my life ever again....what a waste. It felt like was watching another re-run of Mash...boring! I have heard so many times about victory...when is it going to come. I risked my damn life in the military and now I have a sister in...yeah we swore that we will defend this country against any enemies foreign or domestic so why not deal with the domestic terrorists that we have here...drug dealers, pedophile priests, rapists, corporation corruption. Come on stop giving the people a bunch of b.s. Give us an answer now!

Truthmonkey -

Typical Republican conservative claptrap. Government does anything to stand up for individuals against unrestrained corporate power, against unrestrained governmental power, and you paint it as "welfare." You're a typical Republican organ monkey. They toss you a few animal crackers and get you to think you're a member of their club. What a dope.

As for a filibuster, I don't expect you to understand why Democratic Senators should have done so.
