Breaking: Cheney Shoots 78-Year-Old Man, Bin Laden Still at Large
Posted by Joe Rospars on February 12, 2006 at 04:44 PM
According to MSNBC:
Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.
Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.
Armstrong said Cheney turned to shoot a bird and accidentally hit Whittington. She said Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
Following the incident, Cheney reportedly claimed that Whittington's ties to the quail were "pretty well established". Despite hitting only Mr. Whittington with his shotgun blast, Cheney was heard to be insisting hours later that the quail, since flown away, was in its "last throes".
Cheney has a history of misdirecting fire, famously playing a key role in the drive to invade Iraq after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The mastermind of those attacks, Osama bin Laden, is still at large.

vice presidents who hunt and fish shoot senior citizens.
It is the new plan for Social Security.
i wonder if they were making the 78 year old lawyer fetch the ducks? these are really sick rich guys and those kicks just keep gettin harder to find.
off topic but fun just the same:
monkey's uncle shoots barrister
The Gang Who Can't Shoot Straight strikes again.
Was he hunting down WMD? Things could have gotten worse. Cheney could have used one of those Bunker Buster bombs instead.
Maybe Scalia should think twice about duck hunting with the Inspecator Clousseau in the future.
Whatever happened to returning fire?
All the Labrador and Golden Retrievers in Texas must be Democrats.
for the vice president, everyone is "fair game."
this is from a report at salon about the recent conservative political action conference:
Then came questions. A young woman asked Coulter to describe the most difficult ethical decision she ever made. "There was one time I had a shot at Bill Clinton," Coulter said.
and:
About an hour earlier, Vice President Dick Cheney had appeared from behind the blue curtains to wow the thousand or so diners with a bulldog version of the president's last State of the Union, bluntly daring Democrats to continue opposing the war in Iraq.
Woof, Woof Mutha F_ _ _ _ rs
I always knew vice was one "mean" and "hateful" SOB, but I never knew how much of a "mean" and "hateful" SOB until today.
What a hoot. But let's be prepared for the Republican attacks tommorow. The "how dare they make fun of a 78 year old being shot" comments. If you hear them or see them, and they will be out there, just laugh. I'm glad that the 78 year old guy is ok. But get real. This IS funny. Cheney and his gang won't see it that way. Bullies don't like being the butt of jokes. Hey..that reminds me.. what part of Whittington did Cheney shoot anyway?

Little Guys who take on the government rarely win, unless the Little Guy is a guy like Harry Whittington.
Whittington, an Austin lawyer, is very rich, very stubborn and very patient — qualities that come in handy if, like him, you're waging a long legal battle against the city.
and another peek at our Mr. Whittington:
Funeral Board: The chairman of the TFSC, Harry Whittington, who was appointed by Bush in 1999, says he had looked into the various allegations against the commission and Robbins, and found nothing to substantiate them. The "board feels very confident in our executive director and the pattern we are pursuing," Whittington said. However, the board's confidence could be tested if Monreal and Almasov follow through with their threats to sue the agency for wrongful termination.
uh, gregg...i'd like to buy a vowel...
shot in the chest, neck and face...abbygirl
The Katrina Report summary at the Washington Post is very interesting, considering this was a Republican committee:
At the same time, weaknesses identified by Sept. 11 investigators -- poor communications among first responders, a shortage of qualified emergency personnel and lack of training and funding -- doomed a response confronted by overwhelming demands for help.
"If 9/11 was a failure of imagination then Katrina was a failure of initiative. It was a failure of leadership," the report's preface states. "In this instance, blinding lack of situational awareness and disjointed decision making needlessly compounded and prolonged Katrina's horror."

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- James and Sarah Brady made comments today related to Vice President Cheney's reportedly accidental shooting yesterday in Texas.
"Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him," said Jim Brady. "I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog - and I thought he was an idiot."
"I've thought Cheney was scary for a long time," Sarah Brady said. "Now I know I was right to be nervous."

wow rove is really gonna have to work his anal cyst off to spin this mother into a positive story for dumb and dumber....i know, i know but he caught the cyst virus from borrowing rush's bicycle...
Maybe this was meant to be a warning shot to the other republicans that are beginning to question the president's authority to do some of the things he has been doing. Without the hammer to keep them in line, they had to resort to other methods. :)
The serious side of the Cheney shooting was a failure to notify the police and a 24 hour cover-up of the event. It is possible this could constitute a crime, or that this delay was used to cover-up evidence such as intoxicated hunting or using a firearm while under the influence of intoxication which is a crime under Texas firearms laws . Some criminal conduct questions have been raised by the strange handling of this incident in which law enforcement was kept away for at least 24 hours.
It was the duty of the Vice President to inform police of the accident in a timely manner, and he failed to do so and now raises some serious questions about his conduct during this accident.

Cheney break the law... not AGAIN! I'm sure he's really sorry. With over 2,200 people lost in Iraq because of his lies, I know he doesn't want to add anymore to the list he's responsible for... then again, he does want to "stay the course."
I wonder why "Tricky Dick the Second" never goes to Walter Reed, like Rep. Murtha and Sen. Cleland? Maybe because not even the most diabolical people could sleep if they saw the thousands of people that are handicapped and amputees because of the LIES he told. I bet he does need a drink.
What is scary is that, IN THEORY, the devil could possess one person, and convience so many that war is the way to go, even if it hurts and kills so many. And now they say he wants Iran. Too bad the motto to "error on the side of life" only applied to Terri Schivo, and not foreign policy.
IMPEACH CHENEY FIRST!
Way to go Uncle Dick. Pumps three rounds into some old guys head on a duck hunt. What an *ssh*le. This administration is on a roll.
You have to wonder about the intoxication question. This guy was caught drunk driving how many times? Wasn't he the one who gave Chalabi details about our military troop movements (which he passed on to Iran) over a few glasses of whiskey?
The delay in reporting the shooting incident is already making the media ask questions. Shame they don't see the same problem with warrantless domestic wiretaps.
internet weekly milks the gift horse:
looney goons
Paranoid and trigger happy. That's the Dick Cheney I know.LOL :D
Is Abramoff going to pay for more hunting trips with Cheney?
Harry Whittington is involved in many allegations of corruption in the funeral home industry. He was assigned by then Gov. Bush to oversee the funeral service industry in Texas. This is a guy who was ripping off families who lost loved ones.
Wow! Cheney should challenge Zell Miller to duel.
My money is on Cheney.
Cheney Cover-up Of Hunting Accident Raises Some Disturbing Questions
Disturbing questions are renewed about a 1999 scandal involving Gov. Bush who was claimed to have lied under oath in a sworn affidavit, and had appointed millionaire Austin attorney, Harry Whittington to state funeral home regulation board.
PROGRESSIVE VALUES
I gotta tell ya, I read this last night and I am STILL laughing about this line:
...claimed that Whittington's ties to the quail were "pretty well established."
It's great to get a laugh when so much of what's happening in this country makes ya cry.
Cheers!
I might suggest who I'd like to see Dick take hunting next week...........
Hey George - got plans for anything next weekend?
This makes me fear even more for this county's security if Bush ever dies in office and Cheney becomes President.
Laura Bush was pardoned for killing a man when she ran a stop sign. She said she was Day Dreaming. The authorities said it was an accident.
Do you think some people are charmed to get by with crime and others are helt responsible for their actions?
Will Chaney be Charmed? Because of who he is?
I don't really like this kind of humor, because it's the kind of humor used (in the other direction) by Rush Limbaugh and his dittoheads. Not funny.
However, I did write the following note to Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia this morning. I doubt that I will hear back from him, but one can always hope.
Dear Senator Byrd:
Sixteen years ago, when my father was 65 years old, he accidentally shot a fellow hunter while hunting for wild turkey in our native Pocahontas County, West Virginia. The hunter suffered no serious injuries and remains a close family friend to this day.
In connection with that incident, I wrote a letter to you and asked for your help. You were the Commencement speaker at my high school graduation in 1967, where I delivered the Valedictory Address. You shook my hand and told me to call upon you for help at any time.
I never received a reply to that letter, and my father had his hunting license taken away by a local Magistrate for a period of at least five years.
I suppose neither you nor anyone else in the Democratic Party will have the fortitude to do what should be done under the present circumstances, which would be to call upon your colleagues in the House of Representatives to impeach the Vice President of the United States for high crimes and misdemeanors in connection with the penchant for this Administration to disregard the civil liberties protected by our Constitution and established legal frameworks such as FISA, recently revised.
However, I hope that the least you would do is look into taking away his hunting license.
fcsnc, Don't you think the Republicans are doing a good enough job of trashing Democrats that you have to chime in?
Why would you trash an old man like that of Senator Bird. Democrats that trash Democrats deserve to loose. That is what they are setting our party up for. There is nothing more sorry than a person who is a trader to a cause.
Hi there freeforall!
(1) Learn to read.
(2) Go back and read my post.
IMHO you are having way too much fun to win.
You should also learn to spell.
The opposite of "win" is spelled l-o-s-e . Which is what you do when you dare to berate a fellow Democrat. I'll bet you wouldn't recognize a Democrat (or the truth) if it walked up and bit you.
While we're at it, freeforall,
Aaron Burr was a t-r-a-i-t-o-r.
I think "trader" is one of Dick Cheney's hunting dogs, although I'm not sure.
I really got you guys off your duff and ready to fight for what's right. I love Democrats so much, right or wrong they are so much better than any talk the talk Republican. Now if we can get the Republicans to put their hard earned work where their mouth is? They will learn to walk the walk instead of just making a good speech. We Democrats can deal so much better with truth than daydreaming!
The only VP since Arron Burr to shoot someone, but that shouldn't be a surprise from this bungling administration. He is either not capable of handling weapons anymore or he is careless...or maybe he's just a "major league asshole". I wonder if the media will once again opt for lazy reporting and accept the Administration's assertion that this is no big deal. I saw someone's comment saying that it's not like Chapaquiddick or anything. Oh, so it's okay to be careless and shoot someone? The media dissects every single news story to death, unless it has to do with the White House. I would like to know if Cheney has been trained in gun safety or was he given a pass on it considering his position? What if this wasn't an accident? What if he's incompetent? If this was a "liberal" government official, Republicans would be screaming for his resignation and all hell would break loose!
I imagine Cheney grew up hunting with his family. He wouldn't need any instruction of gun safety. He should have none better.
I hear there was another hunting incident in 2003. Something about Cheney shooting like 70 quail at one time at some private club...where they released the birds from a big net....I suppose so he didn't have to actually go out and hunt? (What was it in the report yesterday about they were waiting in a car?)
It seems that the NSA has been after PETA ever since they protested.
Freeforeall,
The person that Laura hit just happened to be a former classmate and boyfriend. It was said that he "cheated" on her just before the accident. That's the story from Texas. It was not so random. However, she was young, and nobody is perfect.
I just want to point out that Democrats aren't like the Limbots and Republicans who make TOTALLY unfair comments about stories from the past.
BTW, Laura AND her family in Texas are Democrats. Her old friends are Democrats. I'm sure they wonder where went wrong, and started hanging around with "the wrong crowd." We all know it was when she moved to Houston.
I have been reading the few suggestions in this article and all others to this point. Many have wrote wonderful suggestions. Keep up the good work!
What do you think about a big class to teach people interested in becomng a Democratic, Political, Official? We could have the brightest and most successful of our Officials teach a class for a week or so each year in their State? Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to handle the Republicans like President and Mrs Clinton, Kennedy, Reid, and there are many others.
HEADLINES: CHENEY SHOOTS LAWYER AT LOBBYIST RANCH.
As Bill Mahr said on hardball it follows the typical administration pattern, (1) screw up, (2)then lie about it and (3) ultimately, blame the cictim.
what a dumb ---k..... To bad he got the wrong guy...only kidding... well....
The story from the Washington POst -- NSA inq. may not happen
Great story. Just mays one ashamed to see what the USA stands for no longer matter. Breaking the law is no long braeking the law (we just need to change it), violating torture treaties is no longer torture... and an A.G. that interprets the law and decides what is to go to court is just doing his job. I never use the term slim, but an elected person that does not actively go after this is ... well slim..
