How could I have forgotten this candidate George Allen gem earlier today?

"When I observed her on videotapes, clearly [she] is conscious and has the ability to feel," Allen concurred, although he has no medical background.

Must be something about Republican presidential candidates that makes them think they can diagnose people hundreds of miles away over video tape. Either that, or he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express the night before.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Fourteen shot at a trading company. At least 90 kidnapped at other businesses. Bodies dumped nightly, bound hand and foot, some tortured. A new brand of violence — a deadly mix of organized crime and sectarian murder — is tearing at Iraq.

ha ha ha. I love the Holiday Inn Express joke.

Speaking of jokes-- George Allen. If only it was a joke. Please, please give us a good campaign Jim Webb

A new thread!! Thank you!

For all those who live in Connecticut:

The Locals Love Their Ned

[...]

There is a rumbling out there, and Lieberman himself hears it. Indeed, he has become uncharacteristically petulant and defensive.

And I think the reason for the rumble and the senator’s ire is the same: Lieberman cannot make sense of his own defense of U.S. government policy in Iraq.

Lamont’s secret weapon is not his personal wealth. That helps. But his greatest asset is a public philosophy. He believes in constitutional democracy. He believes in limited government and popular sovereignty. Even in wartime, the power of government must be checked; even in wartime the president is not a law unto himself; even in wartime the people deserve to be informed by the free exchange of ideas. Even in wartime, the citizens may seek to change the government.

As Jane pens at Firedoglake: Feel the Nedmemtum

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A South African dominatrix has given up her battle to live in a vicarage, telling the church's congregation they can "shove" the disputed residence, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

The Pretoria News said Marianne Ellis had been renting the manse, or vicarage, at the Doornkloof Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk near Pretoria for some time when church elders discovered her sideline as a local dominatrix and asked her to move.

Ellis and her husband at first sought to fight the church in court, but Tuesday decided to back down, the newspaper said.

"It is a long story, but basically I am tired of fighting, really tired. They can take their manse back, in fact they can shove it," she told the newspaper.

it is being reported in the american newspapers that marianne ( thats ms. marianne sir! to you dpd ) is in line to replace karl rove and her husband will replace jeff gannon....

If democracy fails, Bush predicted that terrorists would use Iraq as a base to overthrow moderate governments in the Middle East and launch further attacks against the United States.

"The president can give all the speeches he wants, but nothing will change the fact that his Iraq policy is wrong," said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

"Two weeks ago, he told Americans that Iraqis would control their country by the end of the year. Last week, he told us our troops would be there until at least 2009. These mixed messages from President Bush are taking America in the wrong direction and jeopardizing Iraq's chances for success."

Vice President Dick Cheney said the Democrats' behavior has been inconsistent with what they're now promising to do. Cheney said he did not believe the Democrats had a credible plan for tracking down bin Laden and their plan to move U.S. forces out of Iraq this year would amount to a strategic retreat.

"It makes no sense at all to turn Iraq over to the terrorists," Cheney said on Fox News Radio's "The Tony Snow Show."

Jeez, is the insurgency in it's last throes, or are the "terrorists" about to take over the place? Make up your mind Dick, or at least get your lies straight.

Hello and Guten Tag from Germany,

some weeks ago I've seen a feature about New Mexico and Governor Bill Richardson on German television. I must say that I was deeply impressed.

After having done some research I have learned that Mr. Richardson intends to run for US-Presidency in 2008 and I am convinced he in fact would be the most promising candidate for the White House.

Actually, I have already begun to introduce Governor Richardson to my German audience and I would be very happy indeed to learn more about him.

Any recommendations and hints appreciatied.

Regards,
Olaf Petersen

"I applaud Senator Schumer’s desire to get this issue to the Supreme Court as soon as possible. I am pleased that my colleagues are thinking about ways to address the President's illegal conduct. But while I look forward to reviewing the Schumer proposal, Congress itself should not delay in holding the President accountable for his illegal actions."

Thanks, FOS-CIR, for thelink to the fallacious foto!! Upon reading some of the post about this photo the one I liked best was the fact about edo ice cream being am Turkish company with no outlets in Iraq, much less Baghdad!

Pertaining to your sign-in name, have you analyzed "guest worker program"? Say it three times, slowly. Why do I get the feeling that this program is the same thing that this country did away with 146 years ago? Think of what this program will do for "stabilizing" wages for the working class in this country, or maybe stagnating is a better term!! Yep, for all you folks that said we do not need unions because we have all these great government regulations, so go the regulations with a government that can't uphold a treaty with anyone anywhere.

37
davidual on March 30, 2006 at 04:39 AM

I think that GWB would like to take us back to 1834. This is when the government passed legislation which approved of workers right to organize, but also stated that their employers did not have to recognize their employees organization. Of course, at that same time, the right to own slaves (guest workers?) was unconditional in the south.

Incidentally, this was the hey day of the partisan press. The days when newspaper editors were party activists and favorable press gained patronage from political parties. Just sayin'!

morning fos and david.

speaking of tipping points this poll is amazing. so it would seem our democratic leadership would put energy independence, global warming and the future of our children and grandchildren together into one big fat winning agenda...

Americans at "tipping point" about energy-poll
Thu Mar 30, 2006 1:07 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans are nearly as worried about their country's dependence on foreign energy sources as they are about the war in Iraq, a poll released by the magazine Foreign Affairs showed on Thursday.

Almost half of the 1,000 Americans surveyed for the Public Agenda Confidence in U.S. Foreign Policy Index gave U.S. policymakers a failing grade in weaning the country from foreign oil.

Nearly 90 percent said the lack of energy independence jeopardizes national security.

Public Agenda, a nonpartisan group, conducted the poll in early January with funding from the Ford Foundation. It said that Americans are at a "tipping point" on energy, akin to their state of mind about the war.

Daniel Yankelovich, chairman of Public Agenda, said the public reaches a "tipping point" when it is gravely worried about an issue and believes the government has the ability to change matters. When the index was first published in August 2005, only the Iraq war triggered a similar response, he said.

"This time we find that a second issue has reached a tipping point, which is energy independence, and you have a very strong increase in the number of Americans who are intensely worried about the problem," Yankelovich said in a conference call.

GOOD NEWS!!:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Journalist Jill Carroll, who has been held hostage in Iraq since January 7, has been released, her employer, The Christian Science Monitor, said on Thursday.

The newspaper's spokeswoman Ellen Tuttle said the release has been confirmed by Carroll's father.

Carroll, 28, was working as a freelancer for The Christian Science Monitor when she was abducted by gunmen in Baghdad on January 7. Her driver escaped, but her interpreter, Allan Enwiyah, was killed.

Fault lines widen between evangelicals and the GOP

The fractures between some leading evangelicals and the Republican Party occur in a context of reawakening of what some call the Religious Left. Mainline Protestants, liberal Catholics, Reform Jews, progressive Muslims and Unitarian Universalists came alive politically in opposition to the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 and further mobilized in the 2004 electoral campaign. The best-selling books of Jim Wallis ("God's Politics") and Michael Lerner ("The Left Hand of God") show that religious progressive voices have a sizable, national following.
