DNC Chairman Howard Dean Celebrates Passover
April 14, 2006Today, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean released the following statement commemorating the Jewish holiday of Passover:
"At sundown tonight, Jews around the world will begin celebrating Passover, a holiday that symbolizes the true blessing of freedom. For the next week the enslavement of the Jewish people in Egypt, their persecution and suffering and their eventual redemption will be remembered.
"During these tumultuous times where genocide exists in Darfur, we are at war in Iraq and terrorist attacks remain prevalent in the Middle East and around the world, let us all reflect upon the universal themes of peace and freedom this special holiday embodies.
"As all those celebrating Passover sit down to the Seder, a ritual meal of order, we should renew our commitment to serving our local, national and global communities. The singing of dayeinu, it would have been enough, gives us the opportunity to acknowledge that there is still more to do to help those in need. And as the traditional four questions are asked, let us ask ourselves how we can stand up for our freedoms and the freedoms of our neighbors.
"My family and I wish all those celebrating, a Chag Pesach Sameach, a happy Passover holiday."
