Dean Conference Call with General Wesley Clark, Don Fowler, and Lt. Colonel Andrew Horne

April 6, 2006

As part of the Democratic National Committee's commitment to reaching out to and supporting America's veterans and military families, DNC Chairman Howard Dean yesterday announced the appointment of regional members of the Democratic National Veterans and Military Families Council and unveiled the Council's new website highlighting the campaigns of more than two dozen Democratic veterans running for Congress. The new website can be viewed at www.democrats.org/fightingdems.

Dean announced the new Council members and unveiled the website during a conference call with retired Army General Wesley Clark, former DNC chairman and decorated Army Reserve veteran Don Fowler, and retired Marine Lt. Colonel Andrew Horne, an Iraq war veteran who is running for Congress in Louisville, Kentucky.

Audio from the conference call is available in radio actualities and can be downloaded using the links provided below.

"These Democratic veterans are not single issue candidates. They've got a lot of life experience and many of them have had other professions after they've come out of the military service so they bring a wide range of perspectives into their campaigns. They'll do a lot for the country in office, and they also bare witness to the fact that Democrats believe in public service. And we don't just talk about it, we do it."

"I do also believe that Democrats are strong on national defense and national security. We need to be strong but we need to be smart, and that's where the Democratic Party differentiates itself from the current administration. We need to be measured in what we do, we need to be tough when we need to be tough, but we don't need to be swaggering around and swinging when we don't need to be."

"We're going to use this organization, this new council, to build support by veterans and for veterans in all of these races and point out to the general public that we do have these people who are taking strong stances in the Democratic Party. They are patriots and they are loyalists to the country and to this party, and we think that their participation in this election will result in many of them getting elected and will increase support for the entire party."
