Fifty State Canvass: Door Hangers Arriving -- First One Dropped

Posted by on April 18, 2006 at 11:24 AM

The first of the Fifty State Canvass door hangers are arriving in locations across the country this week. Here at the DNC, we got our shipment yesterday evening. In total, seven hundred and fifty thousand (750,000) pieces are ready to roll, delivering the Democratic message to the doorsteps Americans from Alaska to Floria, Maine to the Virgin Islands, and California to Michigan. It's an exciting time for the Democratic Party, an undertaking of this magnitute is unprecedented in its size. The coordination between the national party with grassroots activists and state parties is unparalleled in its scope. And the fact that this is all happening a full six months before Election Day is a first for everyone.

We've already had reports that phones at the Florida Democratic Party Headquarters have been ringing off the hook with requests for door hangers. We received an email from the Executive Director of the Wyoming Democratic Party this morning after he received that state's shipment:

We got our door hangers today, and I wanted to say that they look great. They're just a really well done piece for the canvass. Thanks!

At the DNC, we are getting phone calls from those not quite as internet savvy asking how they can sign up to participate and/or host a canvass themselves. It's pretty exciting.

We even dropped the first lit-piece early this morning -- right on the door of the Fifty State Strategy's captain, Governor Dean. But there is still a week and a half before Democrats across the country are out in full-force. Plenty of time to find an event and sign-up if you haven't yet. Plenty of time to email your friends and family about the Fifty State Canvass. Plenty of time to write about it on your websites and blogs. Plenty of time to email your favorite bloggers (both local and nationally) and ask them to promote the event. And plenty of time for you to get involved with your local party infrastructure to promote the canvass and make it a reality in your own backyards. After all, that's what this unprecedented cooperation is really all about.

A great idea, Let's turn America's eye for change in our government! Will Rogers has an interesting quote:

" The short memories of the American voters is what keeps our politicians in office."

Let us provoke their memories of the last 4 years and how the Democrats can return integrity to its' leadership!

During the last Presidential campaign I received numerous e-mails from the Democratic Party, various campaign groups, candidates, and party leaders. I was very concerned about certain issues and the way the campaign was being run. This was based not only on my own impressions but feedback I was getting from many others. I sent e-mails to just about every source I could find about these concerns and, in some cases, requesting hard data on certain issues to respond to individuals and group I was in contact with. On rare occasions I got a computer-generated "thank you note" (which was an absolute insult in the context of the e-mail it was responding to) and in most cases received no response, not even an acknowledgment of receipt. Here you are asking for people to canvas neighborhoods and support of a political partythat appears to be peddling its own limited self-serving agenda. based on my experience to date, the Democratic party and is a closed corporation with an interesting communication philosophy -- words flow in one direction and money in the other. I, and others, are not about to canvass neighborhoods for a party that completely shuts out its constituency. I'm not quite sure why I am writing this, my previous missives have all been in vain and I expect this will be another wasted effort. In normal times this would not have been such a concern. However, we have the most destructive President and a Republican party co-opted by a correspondingly destructive clique and the stakes have never been higher. My great hope is a groundswell to break through the wall the Democratic leadership has set up to protect its inner circle. In that respect, I see little difference from the Republican right.

Tim,

There are a few events "within 25 miles" of me in Illinois, but I beg to differ on this.

And plenty of time for you to get involved with your local party infrastructure to promote the canvass and make it a reality in your own backyards.

There's no local party infrastructure that gives a you-know-what about the voters or the grassroots. Is there any way to get the canvass materials out to the people instead of the machine?

Tim i applaud you for your great efforts for what you're doing for the party keep up the good work.

Debcoinc i can understand you're concern and frustration about what happened with the last election and if you wanna blame anyone about the mistakes in the last election blame the DLC and Terry McAuliffe. Don't give up it's worth a shot doing this fifty canvass effort we're listening now and we will seriously fight back.

Stanley, you call dean an idiot but let me ask you a question, how's the dems doing this year in reguards to winning in unexpected places i rest my case.

Zofyne,

If there is no party in your town, you need to form it. And it is not hard.

Contact your County Democratic Leader and invite/demand that he/she come to your town one evening. Gather together 2 people from each district within your town that want to be involved.

Set a night when you will meet and request that the Dem Leader be present. Then ask him to nominate all of you as District Representative.

You have got yourself a Town Party. Now at some point you will need to petition, this way you will never lose your rep stop until you choose to.

It can be done, it has been done. And you will be a founding person in forming equal representation in your town.

You will be quite surprised how many people are sitting home thinking they are the only ones in the town that are Democrat.

If you need help, just let me know.

As a lifelong Democrat, it is with great sadness and fear for the future of our nation that I submit this comment...Each time we get an e-mail from the DNC, my husband and I have responded with the exact same, clear cut message to you:The current political players are NOT representing THIS party, it's people or our nation well. As you try to encourage us to go door to door, to share concepts that would promote our party, you have seriously failed to outline what those concepts are for your OWN party members, let alone potential "converts". You are so busy playing the political game, you are failing the nation that you have sworn to honor,to serve and protect.
Stop playing games, start paying attention. Give us a clear plan to get out of Iraq. Offer a real agenda for the things that are truly important to all people. Get rid of your massive ego's, take your gloves off, get your hands dirty. Stop being critical of those few Democrats who have shown a willingness to think outside the box. Offer us viable concepts, REAL candidates to support and THEN ask us to go door to door.

Hi PeppermintLizzy,

I thought my post sounded harsh, but maybe I was being too subtle? You see there is a local party infrastructure called the Chicago Machine. It's just that they won't be bothered with voters or volunteers. You see that's what city and county employees are for...

That's why I was asking if there was some way to bypass the party and get the canvass materials into the hands of the people.

Believe me taking back the democratic party from the machine is like fighting republicans.

For the benefit of Stanley. Check the events within 20 miles of your zip code. You will see that there are a slew of canvassing events in the Chicago area. By and large these are not sponsored by the regular organization ward and township organizations. You would be comfortable with any of these efforts. Also, some of the events are sponsored by the more open local organizations. There is a lot of Democratic Party activity in the area these days that does not fit into the old model.

Enjoy!

I hope these are better than the push poll/request for money mailings I've gotten in the past, where they want you to take a phoney poll and don't ever address issues of real concern, or even have a space where you can write questions and concerns that you feel need to be addressed.
I hope Dean has better sense than to repeat those insults to voter intelligence.

BTW, are they going to canvass the rural areas, or are they going to ignore family farmers like they have in the past?
Family farmers are under attack from Big Business, and need to have a forum, or at least have their problems addressed in other areas.
The small farmer economy is falling victim to the subsidized big agri-businesses and any interest shown by Democrats might just turn some red states blue.
The Democrats need to stop ignoring rural issues, and start looking at getting getting back that part of their base. If the small farmer isn't a worker, ain't nobody a worker.
