GOP Calls for Investigation Into Blackwell Diebold Stock Purchase

Posted by on April 4, 2006 at 09:29 AM

The Cleveland Plain Dealer has the scoop:

Columbus -Secretary of State Ken Blackwell made an embarrassing announcement Monday: He accidentally bought stock in Diebold Inc., a voting machine maker that benefited from decisions made by his office.

A spokesperson for Ohio's Republican Attorney General Jim Petro called for an investigation. Predictably, Blackwell's campaign argued that decisions on voting machines are made at the county level. That might be true, but at the PD article goes on to note, it was Blackwell, as the state's chief election officer, responsible for whittling down the number of companies eligible to provide the "service" in each of Ohio's 88 counties. Without Blackwell's blessing, there's no Diebold -- and we all know just how insistent his office was about the machines in 2004.

How does one 'accidentally' buy stock? I hope this irresponsibility doesn't get forgotten. Man, do republicans seem to have trouble with admitting guilt when getting caught.

Diebold did present a good portfolio when HAVA started.

The rich like to get richer.

By any chance did JKenneth buy into ES & S??? They are the only other "certified" system here in OH.

"Widdling" down? Do you mean "whittling", as in to whittle wood? The "H" is not silent, either.

Another day , another Republican getting caught with his hands in the cookie jar. And the list goes on and on and on...

MoveOn.org has been running an ad attacking 2nd District Congressman Chris Chocola. It is very good. In in interview last night on one of our local channels, Chris said he thinks that outside forces shouldn't be allowed to interrupt local elections...ah right pal, like the oil industry had nothing to do with your election. When you finally get up off your knees after doing all that extra sucking, maybe you could run on your own? That little interview will work very well for Joe Donnelly when big oil comes in to save your ass again.

Allowing the Republicans to have control of the machines that we use to vote people into office is like...like...like........... I really can't find an appropriate word for this behavior that goes beyond dispicable. Of course morally bankrupt is two words.

In a fantasy dream I can see non-Republicans buying up the stock in this company and forcing morality upon it. Or maybe just junking the machines. Maybe contributions to political parties could go toward things such as this.

Of course if all States went to paper ballots only (such as Oregon), then we could wave goodbye to machines. And...paper ballots don't discriminate and break down like machines do. There should be unrelenting pressure brought to bear on getting paper ballots (which leave voting trails) to be the preferred method of voting. Also, I believe they cost less than machines. Voters would save gas when not having to go to voting places. Employers wouldn't have to let the workers off to go vote. There are all kinds of reasons to have paper ballots!

And politicians need to remember that they are in office to represent the people! Not themselves. I think they tend to forget this subtle point.

The Republicans truly don't think there is anything wrong with conflicts of interest, insider trading, bribery, no-bid contracts, war profiteering, outsourcing, or raping the environment. It baffles them when one of their members is indicted or one of their policies is called into question by religious and civil groups.

The fact that the "little people" who vote might get upset when they do these things doesn't seem register with them. How could a whole party become so jaded and graft-ridden when there are so many important problems that need to be tackled? They seem to have no conscience or interest in the future of this country.

How could they become so out of touch with their local communities? Did they think that Americans who are taking more and more hits economically and emotionally would let them take a pass forever? Did they think they could ignore their Constitutional responsiblities, start pre-emptive wars with bogus intel, and shame our national pride by torturing prisoners and ignoring citizens in distress during a natural disaster? Apparently so.

One of the most fascinating coversations I've heard in years was on Hardball yesterday before DeLay's announcement. Matthews and Buchanan got into talking about the macro economy which looks so good on paper versus the micro economy that most middle class and working poor face which we all know stinks (even Buchanan). Matthews couldn't believe he had missed that.

Tweleve years of deliberate moves by the Republican Congress to screw the common man, and Matthews is just beginning to realize that they were doing it and we might not like it. (He still can't face the fact that he was part of it.)

There are way too many rich media divas and their corporate bosses in this country. They have allowed corrupt Republican politicans to live in a parallel universe. It really is long past due that all of them should be made to live in the same hell that they have created for the rest of us.

Someone e-mailed Lou Dobbs a message yesterday that the shared stating that middle class people need to follow those Latino kids into the streets and start demanding better. I suppose it has come to that, hasn't it?

Unless these voters quit electing these corrupt Republicans and turn to us and our sane, workable agenda, the streets is all that is left for them. The situation has gotten way out of control. There is no other alternative.

Let's make it easy for them to make that decision. I urge every concerned citizen to join us in the national canvass.

Rally, I almost used that term, too. It fits. Thank you for saying it better than I could.

This story is Hilarious. What makes it so funny is they actually admitted it. Most politicians would--deny, deny, deny.

I know the Republicans are out of touch with reality, but there are Dems that are out of touch too----their so full on PORK-Barrel and self interests that is why there is only one course that seems to be predominate----GREED. We see our manufacturing jobs close down and re-open in Mexico or Indo-China were they have no environmental standards. America fought hard so our workers wouldn't have mutant kids, and our reward was NAFTA----no tarrifs on American owned Mexican assembled goods flowing into America. Those jobs belonged to Americans---of all creeds and political views---before BOTH parties desided to abandon us and sign NAFTA into existance.

It all leads back to 1865. We are just looking for some new people to enslave---cheap to almost free labor, and huge profit margins for the top 10%.

Voting Machines are like Slot Machines---the results are all programed.

I want to sell my stake in the Brooklyn Brige to Blackwell.

If Ohio and any other state that utilize Diebold Voting machines with no audit trail and do not upgrade to ones with, here is what should be done.

All Voters should obtain Absentee Ballots to combat the corruption in voting controlled by the Republicans.

OH has VVPAT...voter verifiable paper audit trail. I think more than half of the states that are using DRE (touchscreens) have enacted such laws.

You can find out which systems are used here:
