Kicking Ass: The Democratic Party's Blog

The calm before the storm ... the storm being the tidal wave of Democrats rushing into neighborhoods across the country all day tomorrow, sharing conversation with neighbors about the strong but smart Democratic message. Send your pictures and stories to april29@dnc.org.

In other news, you're going to be seeing a lot less of my fancy little font around the DNC blog. In fact, come next Friday, my presence will be akin to a 0 pt. Arial font. In other words, that's my last day with the organization. I'll be leaving to take a job with a campaign yet to be determined, but surely for a candidate I (and hopefully you) can believe in -- you're all invited. Pam B., I might end up in your neck of the woods, and if I do, I owe you dinner for all the trolls I have failed to zap promptly.

You'll meet the first of the new and improved captain(s) of the DNC Blog, Tracy, this coming Monday.

Rush Arrested

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., April 28 — Rush Limbaugh reached a settlement with prosecutors Friday in a fraud case involving prescription painkillers, though the conservative radio commentator maintains his innocence.

Limbaugh turned himself in to authorities about 4 p.m. on a warrant for fraud to conceal information to obtain a prescription, the first charge in the nearly 3-year-old case, said Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the state attorney. He was released an hour later on $3,000 bail.

Rove’s Legal Troubles More Extensive Than Previously Reported

Rove testified to the grand jury that when he told Cooper that Plame worked at the agency, he was only passing along unverified gossip, according to people familiar with his testimony.

In contrast, Cooper has testified that Rove told him in a phone conversation on July 11, 2003, that Plame worked for the CIA and played a role in having the agency select her husband, former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, to make a fact-finding trip to Niger in 2002.

Cooper has also testified that Rove, as well as a second source — I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, then-chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney — portrayed the information about Plame as accurate and authoritative.

Don't let this one sneak by, peeps.

When this kind of tax relaxation or termination goes through, WHO do you think has to pick up that $71 billion ? Why the Middle Class, the elderly, the poor, the children, the disabled, Veterans, of course, in cut benefits, services, etc.

"Eighteen of America's wealthiest families, including the Timkens of Canton, are bankrolling efforts to permanently repeal estate taxes that would save their families a total of $71.6 billion, according to a report released Tuesday by public interest groups.

Groups funded by the super-rich have engaged in a deceptive campaign to convince the public that estate taxes cause widespread problems for small businesses and family farms when they actually affect about one in 370 estates, said the report released by Public Citizen and Boston-based United for a Fair Economy.

04/28/06 -- WASHINGTON, April 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. war on terrorism has made the world safer, the State Department's counterterrorism chief said on Friday, despite more than 11,000 terrorist attacks worldwide last year that killed 14,600 people

But the new 2005 figures, which showed attacks in Iraq jumped and accounted for about a third of the world's total, may fuel criticism of the Bush administration's assertion that it is winning the fight against terrorism.

You don't honestly think anyone would go to a movie about Limbaugh, the big jerk, do you?

All he is is a big bag of wind. Tries to come off sounding so knowledgeable, so righteous, yet the worst thing that ever happened to him, was the Clintons leaving office! that is what catapulted him to fame. The Clinton haters just ate up his facetious digs at them every day.

I betcha he voted for Clinton the 2nd time around, because he knew which side his bread was buttered on.

Heading out. Wish I could stay around for my ice cream allottment, but please save it for me, gregg! I was good. :))

WASHINGTON - Republican Rep. John Sweeney (news, bio, voting record)'s attendance at a beer-drinking, college fraternity party has drawn criticism from Democrats who accused the New York lawmaker of using poor judgment.

"What is a 50-year-old congressman doing at a frat party at 1 in the morning cavorting with students 30 years his junior? Teaching them how a bill becomes a law?" Blake Zeff, a spokesman for New York Democrats, said Friday.

He was booked on Friday on a single count of concealing information to fraudulently obtain a prescription drug after turning up with his lawyer, Roy Black, at the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

The Ads Are Working against Republicans. The results from the first round of TV ads for the big plan to win the election are in. In each district the Republican was ahead before the ads went on TV, and after the ads ran they're losing. The tools are there to win and a victory in November is within reach. To keep the pressure on we want to expand the TV ad series. So, we.re escalating our program with an even bigger round of ads, focusing on the money these Congresspeople have taken from pharmaceutical companies. Can you help us keep the pressure on?

There's nothing good about drug use. We know it. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. Drug use destroys societies. Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods, which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.

What this says to me is that too many whites are getting away with drug use. Too many whites are getting away with drug sales. Too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we're not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too.

...We are becoming too tolerant as a society, folks, especially of crime, in too many parts of the country.... This country certainly appears to be tolerant, forgive and forget. I mean, you know as well as I do, you go out and commit the worst murder in the world and you just say you're sorry, people go, "Oh, OK. A little contrition."... People say, "I feel better. He said he's sorry for it." We're becoming too tolerant, folks.

STATES RIGHTS! I find this ironic. The GOP says they are the supporters of states' rights. Well, they have given the finger to the states pretty much the same as to the middle-class citizen. States are indeed responding with power, and a little "i love you, too" of their own:

10 States Sue EPA Over Global Warming

Hey Kristen, DeLL, Karen, Marsh, Lizzy, Jen and DPD. All the familiar faces (names).

Let's open up the bar.

I am celebrating Ellen's win for best talk show host. Got the Daytime Emmy's on in the background. Gotta get a good look at all the soap hunks in their tuxes.

79

83
gregg on April 28, 2006 at 10:06 PM

my priorities are fine. Just like it was no bodies business what Bill did when Hillary wasn't looking, who cares how many pills Rush pops? I want my tax dollars spent on IMPORTANT THINGS. I'm sick of this nitpicking wastefulness. I want a party that is focused on what is best for Americans, not on what is going on in peoples bedrooms and bathrooms. I guess it just doesn't exist!

84
newbie on April 28, 2006 at 10:07 PM

much more important things to spend tax dollars on.

Posted by newbie on April 28, 2006 at 09:57 PM

Au Contrere, Mon Frere!

Rush also has to pat $30,000 NOW in order to defray HIS abuse of the system.

How was that 70 MILLION bucks spent on Whitewater justified?

They had to keep expanding it until they nailed someone for getting a BJ from somebody other than his wife.

The Pubes even had an investigation into who was on the Clinton's Christmas Card list.

Get over it, and just slit your wrists now.

The Pube house of cards which was glued together with bull crap is melting under the heavy rain of HUBRIS.

85

Well, Kristen! Have you read who is the opening act performing?

Tonito!!! YESSSS, I was hoping someone would open up the bar! PLEASE may I have an Amaretto sour?

Rush is wrong about many things. Personally I don't feel sorry for him because of his deafness, but I do kinda feel bad for him that he's a hypocrite and a druggie.

currently on Cspan2 Gov Mitt Rmney R-Mass is talking about his insurance for everyone plan. I had heard about it earlier and thought maybe it was a good idea, but the way he presents it is that "there will be no more free rides, everyone will HAVE to have insurance and all but the VERY poor will HAVE to pay"...

any comments? anyone been following this?

Posted by momoaizo on April 28, 2006 at 12:08 PM
(Last open thread)

Most states say you have to have car insurance, too. But many can't afford it and drive without it. Just saying people must do something, doesn't mean they have the means to do it.

It's the same typical Republican "law and order" rhetoric. Let's just hope that this bill makes medical insurance more affordable. With risk shared by a large pool of well and sick, rates should hopefully go down for all. (I wouldn't be surprised if the insurance industry is going along with this so they can sabotage the whole universal health care idea.)

I don't trust any system that allows the insurers to control the process. Just look at all those on the Gulf coast who had their home owners insurance cancelled this week... just before the hurricane season starts.

FOUR "Hits"?

Lesseeeee, Jesse's Girl (sucked)

Um....I'm done, although I saw his album with that cool picture of a dog in a shirt and tie:

Working Class Dog

When I was in Vegas a few years ago he was on a marquee for some lounge show at the "Place where I lost a Hunnert". (Or something like that).

115
DPD on April 28, 2006 at 10:25 PM

Sandy, when I first heard about the Mass. plan I was really surprised as well, it seems that they are going to further punish people for being unable to provide health insurance for their families and it didn't seem that companies would be held responsible for making sure they were part of the solution.

Hi {{{Rose}}} - You liked the movie? I don't think I can see it

124

Gov. Rod signed into law his "ALL KIDS" insurance plan. It just kicked in. ALL children are covered by Medicare / Medicaid until their 18th birthday.

ALL KIDS COVERED

Sounds like what Hillary proposed 20 years ago. It just takes guts and brains.

125
DPD on April 28, 2006 at 10:35 PM

tonito, I haven't talked about GH in ages. Is Frisco (the long haired 19 year old Detective with the pierced ears) still with Anna (the 19 year old Police Commissioner from England)?

And what about Duke Lavery? I think he's sleazy.

With the Ohio primary fast approaching, I was trying to think of something we could do to help our favorite local candidate, Subodh Chandra. Other than blogging, of course, which I've done rather a lot of.

My husband made "Flat Howard" available online in late 2003/early 2004. People could print it out in pieces and assemble it themselves, or we could send them the large file in one piece, and they could take it to a printer.

"Flat Howard" showed up at tabling events, fundraisers--anywhere Howard couldn't be there personally. Just do a Google search for "Flat Howard" and you can get a sense of how the 2D Dean got around.

When we met Paul Hackett at the Honesty in Government event back in January, someone from his campaign (forget who) thought it was a cool idea. Paul posed for a picture that was to be used to make a "Flat Hackett", but he dropped out of the race before that could happen.

Well, anyway, I ran the idea of a "Flat Subodh" past the folks at Buckeye State Blog, and met with a positive response.

So, voila, here he is!

Click on the press releases tab then on the press release "SCHOLARS AFFIRM CHENEY COMPLICITY IN 9/11", dated March 12, 2006 and "EXPERTS CLAIM OFFICIAL 9/11 STORY IS A HOAX", dated January 30,2006.

This will make your day. There are also some videos analyzing the collapse of the three buildings. I am a civil engineer and was shaken by the explanation they present.

I have been depressed all day since I first saw this video and listened to their tale. If any of this is true then the United States as we knew it no longer exists. It is very disturbing to think about.

Seems 'W' has yet to come up with even a hairbrained idea of what to do about gas prices. I'd give him a hint, but he won't listen to anybody but Dick and Karl. Schmuck, he really screwed himself up on this one. All options appear to be closed to him.

206
Dawnie on April 28, 2006 at 11:27 PM

Yes, kj, it will be something to watch. It is too bad this country has not figured out that the only way we'll ever get a handle on the drug problem is to follow Mexico's lead. For 50 years we have tried to solve this problem with ever increasing sums of money. Now spending Billions annually sith no improvement. Take the profit out of it and the criminals will get out of the business. We could then control it the say we control liquer sales, with licensing and taxes. Tax revenues to fund rehap clinics. But then, what would all those cops, lawyers, DEA agents and crooked pols do to earn a living?

213
Dawnie on April 28, 2006 at 11:31 PM

the moon of jupiter i saw is called ganymede. here is a picture of it:

ganyemed

and some stuff:

Ganymede [GAN-ee-meed] is the largest moon of Jupiter and is the largest in our solar system with a diameter of 5,262 km (3,280 miles). If Ganymede orbited the Sun instead of Jupiter it could be classified as a planet.

Jury Awards $1.7M to Woman Spanked on Job

FRESNO, Calif. -- A jury awarded $1.7 million Friday to a woman who was spanked in front of her colleagues in what her employer called a camaraderie-building exercise.

The jury of six men and six women found that Janet Orlando, 53, was subjected to sexual harassment and sexual battery when she was paddled on the rear end two years ago at Alarm One Inc., a home security company in Fresno.

Sales teams were encouraged to compete, and the losers were made fun of, forced to eat baby food, required to wear diapers and spanked with a rival company's yard signs, according to court documents.

He has actually turned the corner...he hasn't said a kind word about the Donkey Party since Dubya took office.

Hi Gregg, I'm hoping that Tracy will keep the trolls off of the site. This site is an awesome place to get and give information for campaigns. I've also noticed that more than a few people that may have voted pug last time come here to check out the dem stance. The GOP and Exxon Mobil
I read in the Washington Times that while congressional Republicans and Democrats in both the House and Senate promised to roll back billions of dollars in tax breaks for major oil companies, the House changed their minds on Thursday.

House Republicans refused to go along with a proposal that called on House members to accept a Senate-passed repeal of $5 billion worth of oil industry tax breaks.

A resolution urging House negotiators to accept the Senate tax proposals failed 232-190, with only two Republicans voting for it.

Meanwhile, in the Senate, GOP leaders unveiled a 10-point plan aimed at soothing the growing election-year public anger over high gasoline prices.

It included a $100 fuel-cost rebate for millions of taxpayers and proposals to rescind oil industry tax breaks enacted only eight months ago, and other measures.

But the plan also called for opening an Alaska wildlife refuge to oil drilling - a longtime goal of several large oil companies operating on the Alaska North Slope - to the consternation of many Democrats and moderate GOP senators, who long have opposed such a move. The drilling provision all but assured the package would have a tough time getting approved. (Nice try though)
Democrats, meanwhile, talked of suspending the 18.4-cent federal gasoline tax for two months to ease Americans' pain at the pump.

352
Cyn_NY on April 29, 2006 at 08:10 AM

Cyn,
Let's urge everyone to call senators once again. This ANWR crap is ridiculous. In fact these replublicans are ridiculous! I sure hope that democrats will take a long look at themselves and make sure the majority of them walk a straight and narrow path for us common folk. This could be the beginning of a new era for Americans if the democrats can pull it together! Suddenly, Hillary doesn't seem so far fetched.

Video from Crooks and Liars

Bill Kristol, who is one of the major players in the group called PNAC, joined the set of the "Colbert Report," and I think was taken off guard right at the outset of the show because he had to answer questions that our media never asks. PNAC envisioned America attacking the Middle East since the middle '90's and for some inexplicable reason (that was a joke) the media never questions him or his members which have lined the walls of Bush's cabinet about PNAC and how it influenced our foreign policy, which led us to attack Iraq.

I do like watching certain football games. Mostly if I can get their live or on a big screen at a local pub or something. Now that can be exciting (if we're winnning)

I went to the Sebring races and Daytona a few times as a kid but it was only cuz we'd party like animals the whole weekend.

Bush Impeachment - The Illinois State Legislature Is Preparing to Drop a Bombshell

The Illinois General Assembly is about to rock the nation. Members of state legislatures are normally not considered as having the ability to decide issues with a massive impact to the nation as a whole. Representative Karen A. Yarbrough of Illinois' 7th District is about to shatter that perception forever. Representative Yarbrough stumbled on a little known and never utlitized rule of the US House of Representatives, Section 603 of Jefferson's Manual of the Rules of the United States House of Representatives, which allows federal impeachment proceedings to be initiated by joint resolution of a state legislature. From there, Illinois House Joint Resolution 125 (hereafter to be referred to as HJR0125) was born.

Detailing five specific charges against President Bush including one that is specified to be a felony, the complete text of HJR0125 is copied below at the end of this article. One of the interesting points is that one of the items, the one specified as a felony, that the NSA was directed by the President to spy on American citizens without warrant, is not in dispute. That fact should prove an interesting dilemma for a Republican controlled US House that clearly is not only loathe to initiate impeachment proceedings, but does not even want to thoroughly investigate any of the five items brought up by the Illinois Assembly as high crimes and/or misdemeanors. Should HJR0125 be passed by the Illinois General Assembly, the US House will be forced by House Rules to take up the issue of impeachment as a privileged bill, meaning it will take precedence over other House business.

The Illinois General Assembly joins a growing chorus of voices calling for censure or impeachment of President Bush including Democratic state committees in Vermont, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Nevada and North Carolina as well as the residents themselves of seven towns in Vermont, seventy Vermont state legislators and Congressman John Conyers. The call for impeachment is starting to grow well beyond what could be considered a fringe movement. An ABC News/Washington Post Poll Conducted April 6-9 showed that 33% of Americans currently support Impeaching President Bush, coincidentally, only a similar amount supported impeaching Nixon at the start of the Watergate investigation. If and when Illinois HJR0125 hits the capitol and the individual charges are publicly investigated, that number is likely to grow rapidly. Combined with the very real likelihood that Rove is about to be indicted in the LeakGate investigation, and Bush is in real trouble beyond his plummeting poll numbers. His cronies in the Republican dominated congress will probably save him from the embarassment of an impeachment conviction, for now, but his Presidency will be all but finished.

I think they are focusing on the Negro hooker who probably didn't get raped by the Duke LaCrosse team.

How do you rape a hooker? If you don't pay her it is rape.

California Becomes Second State to Introduce Bush Impeachment

Joining Illinois, California has become the second state in which a proposal to impeach President Bush has been introduced in the state legislature. And this one includes Cheney as well.

California Assemblyman Paul Koretz of Los Angeles (where the LA Times has now called for Cheney's resignation) has submitted amendments to Assembly Joint Resolution No. 39, calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney. The amendments reference Section 603 of Jefferson's Manual of the Rules of the United States House of Representatives, which allows federal impeachment proceedings to be initiated by joint resolution of a state legislature.

The resolution, in the words of Koretz's press release, "bases the call for impeachment upon the Bush Administration intentionally misleading the Congress and the American people regarding the threat from Iraq in order to justify an unnecessary war that has cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives and casualties; exceeding constitutional authority to wage war by invading Iraq; exceeding constitutional authority by Federalizing the National Guard; conspiring to torture prisoners in violation of the 'Federal Torture Act' and indicating intent to continue such actions; spying on American citizens in violation of the 1978 Foreign Agency Surveillance Act; leaking and covering up the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson, and holding American citizens without charge or trial."

Hello everyone. Just got back from one of Florida's oldest tourist attractions, Weeki Wachee. My daughter loved watching the mermaid show and was so happy to talk to one. Gregg was right; even with all the idiots out there and with all the issues we are fighting, it's important to appreciate the family.

The California Democratic Party believes that the President and Vice President have committed the following offenses that warrant impeachment proceedings:

1-Intentionally misleading Congress and the public regarding the threat from Iraq in order to justify a war against Iraq, and intentionally
conspiring with others to defraud Congress in this regard.

2-Ordering the National Security Agency to conduct electronic surveillance of American citizens without seeking warrants from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review, as required by law, specifically, Title 50 United States Code, Section 1805.

3-Conspiring to commit the torture of prisoners. This crime violates the "Federal Torture Act" Title 18 United States Code, Section 113C. It also violates the UN Torture Convention and the Geneva Convention, which are U.S. law under Article VI of the U.S. Constitution, which makes treaties ratified by the US part of US law.

4-Ordering indefinite detention without access to legal counsel, without charge, and without the opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention, all in violation of U.S. law and the Bill of Rights.

On these grounds, the Democratic Party of the Great State of California, calls for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard “Dick” Cheney.

OH I was sent a zogby poll to take today. A few of the questions were interesting....... they are probing our thoughts on if we're willing to vote for a woman and if not this year when might we see a woman as President. Or if we think a woman should be VP before running for Pres.

Also they asked finally about if we thought Hillary stood a good chance, fair chance , etc of becoming president if she has Bill working to help her campaign?

How dumb. zogby is showing his chauvenist side it seems

Hey William, I got this email from Democrats.com too !

Will Your State Be the First to Send Impeachment Charges to Congress?

Three state legislatures, Illinois, California, and Vermont, have now introduced resolutions to send petitions to the U.S. House of Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against Bush (and, in the case of California, Cheney too). Minnesota, Missouri, and Oklahoma all have legislatures still active in May. Delaware, Louisana, R.I., South Carolina, and Puerto Rico are all up and running through June. New Hampshire is in session through July.

Every state has legislators brave enough to take the lead if we urge them to do so and provide them with the information they need.

Here's a kit to get you started:

Here's a place to get organized with others in your area:

Afternoon all, It's good to see everyone is hard at it. This will be quick. I really hate to say this, but it's about 90 degrees and I'm due for a swim.

Didn't check all the way back to AM, but did ya'all see the NY Times OP-Ed piece "Trading Frenzy Adding to Rise in Price of Oil"? That's the type of info I was referring to last night on my post. Because they have put the US in such an unfavorable position, there is no way for the admin. to calm investors fears and take the heat out of the oil markets. If, just once, that nit-wit would read something smart, like the piece above, he might be able to actually accomplish something. Enough is enough! Vote Democratic!
