Spring Meeting & Fifty State Strategy Collide

Posted by on April 20, 2006 at 06:55 PM

Bringing it back to the 50 State Strategy, I had the occassion to spend a few minutes earlier today with DeMiktric Biggs, one of the organizers hired by the DNC in Mississippi. Like the previous stories from Utah, Ohio and Oklahmoma, the tale told by Biggs was an inspiration as well. Click the image below to find out how Democrats are organizing in Mississippi in 2006.

Video: Meet DeMiktric Biggs -- Mississippi DNC Organizer

We're drawing close to the end of day one, and it's been pretty exciting. I hope you've enjoyed the coverage as much as I have bringing it to you.

It was good to be reading about what is going on in New Orleans. It is a shame that the republicans are up to their same old nastiness and stating that the Democrats are exploiting a tragedy in an election year by holding their convention in New Orleans.

Exploiting??

The Democratic delegates are going to help in a clean up effort.

The Democrats are going to clean up lawns and clean out, stabilize and demolish homes in disrepair.

The Democrats are going to distribute clothing and other necessities to victims and pack groceries for the needy.

That is what makes me proud...this is not a potemkin photo op, this is about real down to earth hard workers helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Afterall we all know that the Bush administration has not helped them.

PeppermintLizzy on April 20, 2006 at 07:49 PM

In contrast, the Republicans would never even think of holding their convention, let alone a presidential convention, in a city that suffered as a result of their incompetence or collusion!

So the republikans think the Democrats are exploiting a tragedy.

The republikans have exploited fear with their "republikan party's WAR AGAINST THE NATION OF ISLAM."

DEMOCRATS SHOULD CONTINUE TO STAY FOCUSED ON WHAT IS BEST FOR AMERICA,

Let the republikans do the mud-slinging.

republikans,

take your bush administration AND RESTAFF IT!

4
Benji on April 20, 2006 at 10:28 PM

TIM,

You tell those Democratic Delegates that the only reason why swing-voters voted for Bush is because they wanted Bush to finish a fight that he started...

and it would have been a real tragedy if Kerry and the Democrats ended up having to clean up the republikans crap.

The republikans can clean up their own crap.

bush has two more years to make good on his "WORD" that he is a uniter and not a divider...

so far it looks like he's...

a big mouth that's...

ALL TALK AND NO WALK.

5
Benji on April 20, 2006 at 10:41 PM

Well, keep in mind.We all know why Republicans would try to accuse Democrats of exploiting the situation with New Orleans. After all, that's what their president did when he had a photo taken of him of a Black woman and her daughter who were PRE-SELECTED.....as well as forcing that young Black man to hug him in front of cameras. We can't forget the little "Fly Bye's" that President Bush went on,but only after recieving MASS complaints about how he ignored the people. So,becasue Republicans are so fake, and that's all they know, they are quick to accuse others of being like them.

Democrats on the other hand, are out there because they are Democrats. It's just that simple. The Democratic Party is more like "We the People "than the Republicans are.I mean, noone forced John Edwards to go out there to New Orleans with a group of Spring Breakers and help clean up the place now did they? NO! So see ?
It's a "Democrat thang".It's an American thing.

Let the Republicans talk their smack.America knows they are full of it and just in case they don't,we, the Democrat Constituency, will be here to make sure they all know.LOL!

Iran's leader hails rising oil prices as ‘very good’

Comments emphasize hawkish position of world’s 4th largest oil export
REUTERS
Updated: 7:46 a.m. ET April 21, 2006
TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's president said on Friday the rise in oil price was “very good,” Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported, emphasizing the hawkish position of the world’s fourth largest oil exporter as crude prices have hit record levels.

“The increase of the oil price and growth of oil income is very good and we hope that the oil prices reach their real levels,” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said as he toured an oil exhibition in Tehran, the agency reported.

He did not say what those real levels should be. But these and other earlier remarks suggest he believes crude prices should rise above this week’s record high of over $74 a barrel.

----ok has there ever been an american president who has taken more pointy sticks in the eye from foreign leaders ( be they assholes like this one or respected like others ) than bush? does the fact that every leader of any organization larger than the kids lemonade stand down the street feels he or she can lash out at our presidunce and the american people mean that he has made us stronger in the world?

record high of over $74 a barrel. - posted by Greg

On NPR yesterday, one analyst suggested $80 a barrel by July, with a per gallon price of $3.25. On the up-shot, the number of SUV's people listed in the classifieds has gone up a LOT, and I'm seeing a bunch of "for sale" signs on trucks all over my community. If only the differential weren't going to pad profits of the super-rich. I'd support $3.25 if it were going toward research for alternative fuels, pollution control, infrastructure improvement, etc.

THE ANSWER..........

Driving Toward Energy Independence

Plug-in hybrids will get us off of our foreign oil addiction. It will keep money in the US that is currently bleeding out to the middle east. It will provide great cash crops for farmers. If solar roofs that feed the grid are thrown into the mix we will not need to build future power plants.

New Slogan:

A plug-in bio-fuel hybrid in every garage and solar panels on every roof!!!!!

kjfindlay, are you a new visitor here or are you an oldie with a new name? i try to keep some sort of sense of who is who even though its all 1's and 0's in reality.

if gas goes up to 5 bucks a gallon i figure i will be able to buy one of those nifty bmw suv's and just drive it up and down the driveway once a week for kicks.

15
gregg on April 21, 2006 at 08:45 AM

deb, all the supposed experts claim solar is years away blah, blah...but if the morons running the gument put a bit of incentive behind retrofitting this stuff to exsiting homes and buisnesses and incorporating it into new construction we would see it take off even more than it currently is....the problem is the folks in power thing heavy dependence on oil is good bizznezz ( it is for them ) and god is telling them that global warming is part of his plan...time to put these folks out on one of those old test site atolls in the pacific and get a new set of brains in washington.

The reason why Kerry won New Hampshire and Lynch won the Governor's office is because Massachusetts residents have been moving to southern New Hampshire due to the cost of living.

The cost of living in New Hampshire is significantly less than in Massachusetts.

Good morning, all.

Kathy and gregg, didn't Scalia and Company deny us the names of all those energy "experts" who sat in with the Vice President and dictated what had to be in "their" energy bill...along with the opportunity to set EPA guidelines?

Trump said yesterday that he wouldn't endorse anybody for President in '08, but he sure likes the idea of Spitzer as NY Governor. He also said that while he's not blaming anyone, Iraq was a complete farce and there is no excuse for not knowning it was going to happen...we need to cut our losses and get out.

I cannot conceive that any communications department being so stupid and inept as to produce the performance we all witnessed yesterday in the Rose Garden. In my mind there are only four possible explanations:

1. Everyone at the White House is on drugs and just can't help but screwing up no matter what they do.

2. Scott was so pissed off, he planned a going-away present sure to embarass all those in the White House who lied to him and made him look like a stooge in front of the Press Corps these past few years.

3. Karl Rove doesn't like being demoted. King of the Dirty Tricks (which would more than describe what happened to President Hu yesterday) decided to show Bush he's still in control of policy no matter what is said publicly.

4. Bush, The Great Decider, decided that he was going to show the Chinese who is in charge. We are talking about someone who used to torture small animals and watched them squirm. With that in mind, what better way to put the Chinese President in his place than to embarass him not once but twice at an offical event....no matter that he was the host and responsible for making his guest feel welcome.

Any the above scenarios are too scarey to examine too closely. It speaks to the complete decline and fall of America's reputation for excellence. The Katrina recovery mismanagement and the Irqai occupation were just practice runs for this insult to all civilized people.

I wouldn't be surprised if China does not show up at our next bond offering. Will any other country? Maybe Tony Snow and the new Faux News outlet in the White House Press Room will explain it all to us....unless an ongoing investigation is underway by then.

What's very annoying is hearing that, if we had maintained the energy initiative that Carter started, we would already be completely energy independent. sigh. Was it the same day or just within the first month of his Administration that Reagan pulled down the solar panels from the White House? I know hindsight is 20/20 and all that, but sometimes it would be nice if we listened to foresight that's well informed, but I guess that's "liberal" thinking.

Hillary and Bill went to L.A.
They went to eat and drink and to play
Lots of folks came over to dine
They ate high on the hog
And drank all the best wine
Good friends wrote lots of really large checks
And called each other "Bubba" and "Tex".
Hillary's kitty was getting too low
She still had 20 million to go
While folks go to work for ten bucks an hour
The Clintons work hard to hold on to power
With millions of dollars in all of their PAC's
They still cannot buy the affection they lack
How much money is really enough
To move them to talk about people and stuff
Queen Hillary says that she just wants to reign
And Americans can just feel their own damn pain
Reform is a word for others to speak
Perhaps she will think to think it next week
How many votes can she buy with that cash
That she will make from the L.A. bash
Just hang out with the crust that is upper
And forget about the VFW chili supper
When the elections come and she spends for her votes,
She will sing "that's all she wrote".
Americans want some common sense
And someone who won't just sit on the fence
Give me a statesman, a patriot true
And America will say, "I'm voting for you".
Raise that money and raise that dough
It will not get you elected, though.

China Mistakenly Called by Taiwan's Name

WASHINGTON - The meeting between
President Bush and Chinese President
Hu Jintao began with a gaffe Thursday when an announcer referred to China by the formal name of Taiwan, which China considers a rebellious province.

- we are soooooooo screwed if China calls up our debts - we do NOT want to annoy this country.

gregg @ 8:45: again, you are sadly misinformed. $5 per gallon is yet another in a series of President Bush's productivity enhancement initiatives. (PEI's). Pulling into your gas station with $20, or even $10 remaining in your wallet, you should be grateful that pumping gas at $5 per gallon takes harly any time at all and very soon your are back to work being a productive American. God Bless President Bush!

Thanks for the free ride, DJ and gregg. I appreciate someone taking the initiative.

Why do I get the feeling those gasoline lines are going to be in all our futures soon?

CNN ran a really disturbing special last night about a theoretic energy crisis in 2009. It supposedly is brought on by a Category 5 hurricane hitting Houston teamed up with an al Queda bombing of the oil pipeline terminal in Saudi Arabia. It suggests the worst case scenario with the failure of our enviornmental, energy, and foreign policy all intersecting.

If there was ever was an argument for electing people with brains for a change, this program made it loud and clear. I suppose it's going to be repeated often with gas prices going up and the hurricane season almost here. Catch it if you can. I think it was called the Perfect Storm.

Are we beating the drums of war toward yet another oil rich country?

Venezuela should have bigger worries than U.S. sentiment

The neocon plan...steal all of the oil around the globe and sell it to Americans so that they can joyride in their SUV's!!!

32
xdebx on April 21, 2006 at 09:21 AM

Personally, I think that we should start stepping up the environmentally friendly motor vehicles (hybrids, etc.). This President should be aggressively promoting that, but as we all know, he won't. He's best friends with the oil industry.

George W. Bush is frankly, a cheap bastard.

Dawn, I think there are a lot of bloggers too busy juggling a lot of responsibilites they didn't use to have. It cuts into your time. But they are here in spirit and will certainly return as the election nears.

We've had an interesting array of new people come in with varying views. It's good to see some here who we never thought would want to discuss issues with Democrats. I hope we get the same response when we canvass.

One thing that the hybrid article didn't mention is solar roof feeding the grid. For what we annually subsidize oil companies we could pay for photo-voltic roofs on houses as each needs a new roof. The home owner would pay for the cost of a 25 year shingle roof and the nation subsidize the difference. The roofs would feed the grid which would mean that we don't have to add new power plants. It would take 25 years for every roof in the US to be solar. Free energy from the sun charging our plug electric cars. Clean air, jobs for Americans.

Good Morning everyone! I have a property rights story to set off even the most staunch believes in imminent domain. (Well maybe not but my sense 'they got screwed' meter went off all the same this morning)

Two years ago a group put together a transportation plan for Seattle to extend the monorail system to actually be a useful means of transportation (incase you haven't been here the monorail was built in 1962 for the Worlds Fair and it shuttles people from the site of the fair to the downtown shopping area) anyway, the idea went to public vote and was approved and an additional tax was placed on car registration just for those that lived in the area to be covered by the monorail service.

The project turned into a huge mess, with basically the bidding design contractors pulling out their bids and no one wanting to even touch the project, it was WAY over budget just in the design stage and in condemning and buying up the property for the project. This last election cycle voters voted to kill the project and the city decided to sell the property back. People who had lost their property due to imminent domain were given the opportunity to buy their property back at a significant increase from what the city paid for it. (All in all the city netted a $15m profit from the resale of the property they originally condemned for the project)

At 74, Sen. Edward Kennedy still roars
Fri Apr 21, 2006 8:32am ET
By Thomas Ferraro

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - At 74, Edward Kennedy still roars as one of America's leading liberal voices, longest serving senators and most polarizing political figures.

While most people his age are retired, Kennedy shrugs off an achy back and heads toward anticipated re-election in November to an eighth six-year term.

"There's a lot to do," he said in a recent interview when asked to explain what even critics describe as his seemingly tireless efforts on behalf of the downtrodden.

"I think most of all it's the injustice that I continue to see and the opportunity to have some impact on it," the white-haired Massachusetts Democrat said.

Kristen:

eminent domain is a problem, thats terrible they couldnt get it back at their original sell price,

they wanted to pass legislation here to allow eminent domain to properties that the city deemed it could make more profit from a rivefront developement in taxes (in otherwords- the business owners)
changing the usual use or reason from properties for public use ( in other words - now it would really be private profit) to the betterment of the community.

on a personnal or is it personnel note i am going out now with wife to buy the first complete set of bathroom towels that i have ever purchased in my life. i am 58 years old, retired from gument, in second marriage and it is time to get rid of the collection of weird pieces of cloth ( now that after 26 years i got the bathroom finished ) and buy some new stuff. i realized that i was a bit out of touch when we were looking at tile for the bathroom and the design folks kept saying "get a neutral color and then when you want to redecorate you can always change your linen motif..." or something like that and i had never had such a concept in my head. the wife of course has adapted to my clueless sense of style and consumption by burying herself in gigantic art history tomes for the past ten years....so bbl.

got this email: (i know this is a bit long but it's muy importante!)

Congress is about to sell out the Internet by letting big phone and cable companies set up toll booths along the information superhighway.

Companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast are spending tens of millions in Washington to kill "network neutrality" -- a principle that keeps the Internet open to all.

A bill moving quickly through Congress would let these companies become Internet gatekeepers, deciding which Web sites go fast or slow -- and which won't load at all -- based on who pays them more. The rest of us will be detoured to the "slow lane," clicking furiously and waiting for our favorite sites to download.

Don't let Congress ruin the Internet:

Tell Congress to Save Net Neutrality Now

Our elected representatives are trading favors for campaign donations from phone and cable companies. They're being wooed by people like AT&T's CEO, who says "the Internet can't be free" and wants to decide what you do, where you go and what you watch online.

The best ideas never come from those with the deepest pockets. If the phone and cable companies get their way, the free and open Internet could soon be fenced in by large corporations. If Congress turns the Internet over to giants like AT&T, everyone who uses the Internet will suffer:

Google users -- Another search engine could pay AT&T to guarantee that it opens faster than Google on your computer.

iPod listeners -- Comcast could slow access to iTunes, steering you to a higher-priced music service that paid for the privilege.

Work-at-home parents -- Connecting to your office could take longer if you don't purchase your carrier's preferred applications. Sending family photos and videos could slow to a crawl.

Retirees -- Web pages you always use for online banking, access to health care information, planning a trip or communicating with friends and family could fall victim to Verizon's pay-for-speed schemes.

Bloggers -- Costs will skyrocket to post and share video and audio clips -- silencing citizen journalists and amplifying the mainstream media.

Online activists -- Political organizing could be slowed by the handful of dominant Internet providers who ask advocacy groups to pay a fee to join the "fast lane."

Small businesses -- When AT&T favors their own services, you won't be able to choose more affordable providers for online video, teleconferencing, and Internet phone calls.

Innovators with the "next big idea" -- Startups and entrepreneurs will be muscled out of the marketplace by big corporations that pay for a top spot on the Web.

We can't let Congress ruin the free and open Internet.

Let Congress Know that You Want Net Neutrality Now

We must act now or lose the Internet as we know it.

Onward,

Kristen - I think it's gonna be hard doing mornings here. I am not used to getting angry so early in the day! Emminent (sp) domain has to be one of the top 3 worst mistakes of this administration!

It just SCREAMS Nazi take over!

Jen

I don't know if charter.net is big like the others mentioned but they just made some deal where our cable TV, NET and Phone (as of today for us) will all be ONE service! It's such a fantastic deal that we HAD to wait 3 wks for it! Free install, free long distance anywhere in the continental U.S., fast cable internet and more tv stations than I will ever conceivably be able to watch! For under a hundred a month! TOTAL!

We were paying 100 just for comcast cable and tv down in florida. Phone was another wholely ridiculous number through local and long distance services.

This is a GREAT deal. Hope it turns out that way in the end!

oo thanks for reminding me

I have 30 days to do that here. I wonder if they'll give me my OLD NC picture back? That would be sweet as it was 10 yrs ago! hehe!

ok, I looked it up since I so obvioulsy butchered the word. Eminent would be the correct spelling and I promise to write it a hundred times to avoid the mistake again. :)

Dawn, let me know what you think of the phone service...basically it is a voice over internet system and I've been wondering if they have worked out all the call quality issues that can go along with that type of service. (Mainly how does it sound when you are on the phone and online as these two services will fight for the same bandwidth.

I've been thinking about changing but I don't really like comcast much and don't want to give up my email address again to switch.
