50 State Canvass: Success Stories

NEW JERSEY
“I had a great response form all of the contacts I made over the weekend. I canvassed my voting district by myself - knocking on 100 doors and making 30 contacts. I also registered two new voters both Dems. It was a very good weekend.”
MISSISSIPPI
“This weekend, over 70 Mississippi Democrats participated in what was dubbed as "VISION" Mississippi. This event was a huge success. Our vision canvassers took to the streets and distributed over 3000 door hangers and held just as many conversations about the Democratic Party and its vision for America as well as Mississippi. As we have told our vision canvassers, April 29th marked the beginning of one of the most comprehensive GOTV pushes that Mississippi Democrats have ever seen and it will all revolve around neighbors talking to neighbors.”
(This success story submitted by your Mississippi DNC Organizer, DeMiktric M. Biggs)
VERMONT
"Several people were genuinely pleased to see that the Democrats CARE and are GETTING ORGANIZED. I'm personally psyched to get out to other neighborhoods in the county between now and November. I believe we can make a real difference on voter education and turnout."
OHIO
“Although there were only 2 of us we dropped lit at 200 over houses and only stopped when we ran out.”
TEXAS
“I enjoyed meeting neighbors that I had never met. Those who revealed that they were Republicans almost told me apologetically that they voted Republican. Most of them expressed some dissatisfaction with the present situation. All it all it was s very nice experience.”
IDAHO
“We contacted 1000 homes. Coeur d' Alene covered 1300 homes. We were rewarded buy finding people at home and having them show "delight" that there are Democrats visible in this very red district, in this very red state.”
ARIZONA
“I called my walk "Getting to Know Your Neighbors". I listed a time to greet from 10 till noon. I got door hangers from the Arizona and Maricopa County Democratic Office. So I started out pushing my wheelchair around the small area which is our neighborhood. I found almost everyone at home. There were several people who were very interested persons who needed materials to register to vote (which I had and gave to them). There were quite a few who were glad for the door
hanger and its information. I felt that our neighbors have a real concern for our country and a desire to be more involved than they have ever been before. Noon came too soon, so I plan to continue each Saturday that I am able till I have been to each house in this little neighborhood. Along the way maybe I can find others to help me. This will be my beginnings of "Talking Neighbor to Neighbor."
FLORIDA
“I worked with my local DEC to organize this event. We met at the local headquarter office. The best part of the event was talking with the voters, asking them what is important to them really seemed to resonate with them. We were not surprised to hear that gas prices were at the top of their list of concerns.”

This is good news. Now if the DNC can get local state parties in order with proper marching orders and materials we'll be in good shape. For example, I lived in Monmouth County, NJ during the 2004 elections and went to the annual county fair. The Republicans had their booth stocked to the max with Bush 2004 materials, stickers, etc. while the NJ booth only had some lit on a local official and a sherif. NOT A THING for Kerry's campaign or anybody running on a national level. This kind of thing just screams imcompetence and apathy, and it can't be the face of the Democratic party if we really want to take back the country. I hope Governor Dean can use his authority and leadership to turn things around at the local level and not merely rely on weekend warriors with pamphlets (which serve their purpose but are just the beginning).
Can someone tell me why democrats are voting WITH RETHUGS to pass a pork laden bill?
Why bother with grass roots when dems are no different than the rethugs?
Seriously.
Why bother?
If they won't help stop the pork and rape of our treasury for cronies and special interests, then just what are dems fighting for?
Just the ability to scam us for more money? And then give it to their special interest K Street buddies?
Because we have DLC and conservative dems that are running the senate. The bloggers are on top of things and we'll change everything and fight back and we'll put serious progressive candidates in the house and senate that's a promise.
As far as the 50 state canvas goes i enjoy reading them and as i said before it's good to see everyone getting involved along with bringing a message so hopefully this will be a trend to help us get back congress in November and we say bye bye to the repugs.
Gas Prices
Yes gas prices is the number one concern ,WHY
that's easy when you got to pawn your personal items to fill your tank that's a problem. I was put out of business because of fuel prices so I know what people are concerned about. I'm trying to find a attorney for a lawsuit against the big oil companies. See me

In Canton Ohio, a small group of us from the Todd Bosley for county commissioner Campaign managed to get about 1100 doors Saturday morning. Although my wife was less than thrilled about me being out there on our anniversary.
Much thanks goes out to Jessica from the ODP for giving us hand out there as well.

I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF THE LATEST REPUBLICAN PLOY TO TAKE PEOPLES RIGHTS AWAY WHEN IT COMES TO CHALLENGING ABUSE BY LARGE HEALTHCARE COMPANIES. UNDER THE GUISE OF AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE THESE COMPANIES WISH TO HAVE ALL COMPLAINTS FOR NON PAYMENT OF BENEFITS DECIDED IN FEDERAL COURT. NOT EVERYONE REALIZES THAT SUITS FILED IN FEDERAL COURT OFFER NO MONETARY RELIEF FOR THE DEFENDANT. DENYING BENEFITS IS A FAVORED PLOY OF THE MANY SO CALLED AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS. THEY SATISFY ONLY THE PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS OF HAVING A POLICY NOT THE PRACTICAL NEEDS OF HAVING COVERAGE. THIS IS ALSO THE SMOKE AND MIRRORS TACTICS BEING EMPLOYED BY REP. GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY AND HIS SOLUTION TO THE LACK OF HEALTHCARE IN THIS COUNTRY.
JUST A NOTE TO ALL YOU REDNECKS. THE HISTORY OF THE SOUTH IT WAS ALWAYS DEMOCRATIC. IT USED TO BE CALLED THE SOLID SOUTH FOR IT'S DEMOCRATIC NATURE AND VOTING RECORD. SO IF YOU LIVE DOWN SOUTH LIKE I DO AND VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS YOU HAVE READ YOUR HISTORY YOU JUST MIGHT BE A REDNECK!
Speaking of canvassing, I thought it was illegal for anyone to telephone blanket call to sell or beg; but the DLC is telephone blanket calling for support of their Republican-Lite Candidates and are calling themselves the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. They need to get their money from the Republicans as they are not representative of the majority population on the Democratic side. I give them nothing and no Democrat should give them anything. They are traitors to democracy.
Also, this is important.
ALL Independent, Green or other affiliation voters who want to vote a DLC-Republican-Lite Democrat out of office in the Primaries will have to change your affiliation to Democrat in order to do so or your vote will not be counted in the Primaries. Your vote will count in November, but in the crucial Democrat Primaries, your vote will not count. If you want your vote to count so that we can vote these DLC Democracy Traitors out of office, please register Democrat for the Primaries.

To find out the names of the new Democratic Candidates who aren't DLC-Republican-Lites, keep checking Jim Dean's site at Democracy For America.com and the Candidates will be listed (not there yet, but will be when the time comes):

It's great that Democratic candidates are making such progress in so many states. However, the state that is one of the most threatened is Michigan. Governor Jennifer Granholm is a highly compitent governor, but Republican challenger Dick DeVos has had a new bounce in the polls. He actually has topped Granholm's numbers. Michigan is the only state that has experienced no economic recovery in the last few years. The reason is that the Michigan economy is tightly knit to the Big 3 auto companies, which are currently in a depressing slump. Instead of blaming outsourcing, high gas prices, or overwhelming foreign compitition, the Michigan Republican Party piles all of the blame onto Governor Granholm. The sad thing is that tons of people believe these assanine claims. Even worse, the Democrats have not even started running ads. About every day now, I see an ad featuring Dick DeVos standing in a closed factory (which was closed under former Republican Governor John Engler's term). No matter how baseless his claims are, people grow to believe him as he pounds untrue messages into their heads repeatedly. If the Democrats in Michigan don't pick up the pace, the state could lose its public schools and other services. I'm sure that it feels great to gloat about a 50 state victory canvass, but in reality at least one of these states is in grave danger of a Republican takeover.
Vote for Democrat leaders who are willing to impeach Bush, apologize for any complicity in violations of international law and spying on Americans. If those leaders don't exist, don't vote Democrat. Get democratic!
voterDouglas:
Good idea, voterDouglas. Do you have a list of all who are willing to Impeach Bush? If so, post it or the link to it.
Hi MarthaA,
Whatever Democratic "leaders" who aren't willing to list THEMSELVES on the Congressional record as sincere opponents of war crimes and for impeachment of war criminals, well, they aren't worth our support at the polls, are they?
voterDouglas:
The REVOLUTIONARY Conservative Right has gotten too far out of hand, there is going to have to be a REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT from the Left in order to reign them back in.
This greedy, destructive, government is not a government anyone who is God fearing can go along with.
I ask God in the name of Jesus to bring this Hitler type regime to a halt and make the United States a real democracy that isn't always lying, killing, stealing, starving, destroying, torturing and running over people who are not able to protect themselves as is currently happening in the United States and the World by this Republican extreme regime. The Bush Regime is as FAR RIGHT as any Conservative Regime gets and people had better learn exactly what Conservative means when used politically by the FAR RED RIGHT and not forget it and teach it to your children so this will never happen again.
I had to talk to a lot of people to try and get doorhangers in MD, but I got what I needed to go around. I live in a very right-wing part of the state where I have been told that Dems aren't quite welcome.
I went canvassing anyway. I didn't have a partner to come along, so I decided to stay local. I spoke to about fifty people who said they are Republican, but are willing to hear what the National Dems are saying. I got plenty of doorslams, but I also got a lot of, "There's a NATIONAL Democratic party?"
I feel it was worth it. I didn't get to distribute all the doorhangers, but I'm talking to my local club, I'm going to see about doing another canvassing. Just a thought, though.
Please pass on a THANK YOU from California's central coast to DNC folks who made the State Partnership project possible. Getting enough doorhangers was a little tough, but it was worth it in the end for the overwhelming response. One sign of our success: New Precinct Captain, 12-year-old Bert, got his dad out walking and talking to neighbors about the Democratic Vision on May 13. Bert wants to learn how to enter his neighbors' choices (from the 6 items on the doorhanger) into our Grassroots Champions Coalition statewide database himself, and has already attended a training session. If Bert's optimistic face showed up at your door, would you have the courage to face him again if you hadn't voted on election day? Go Bert! And thank you Chairman Dean and the DNC!

In California, on April 29th, many Democrats were at the Convention, and we hit the streets anyway. It was slow starting and the momentum built as we knocked on the doors of those in Newport Beach. Neighbors were welcoming and nearly all feel the country is going in the wrong direction, even the Republicans that happen to live in the homes once occupied by Democrats.
Our members are willing to support the party if we simply pay attention to what they have to say rather than assuming that they are all going along with the political views in the media. My consensus is that we must remain consistent with our contact within the constituency of the party. Knock on the doors more often and have neighborhood meetings regularly that are people inclusive.
