Kicking Ass: The Democratic Party's Blog

Dear Mr. President

Posted by on May 31, 2006 at 03:15 PM

What does it say when President Bush can't answer the questions about the war in Iraq from a 10 year-old girl honestly and directly?

From the Morning Sentinel:

Ten-year-old Emily Shrader was watching television in her father's tractor-trailer at the beginning of a trip from Maine to Florida when she decided to get involved in her nation's foreign policy.

"It (television news) showed how many people were dying in Iraq, so I just started to write," said Shrader, a fourth-grade student in Lauren Taylor's class at Canaan Elementary School.

From Maine to Florida, Shrader, who was on April vacation, wrote, then edited and rewrote her letter to President Bush.

She told President Bush that her father, a long-haul trucker, often comes home on weekends, but if she didn't get to see him for over a month she would be very sad.

Think, she asked him, how he would feel if one of his parents went off to war and never came back.

"You could never even see him or say good-bye. You may never be able to say 'I love you Dad or Mom again,' " wrote Shrader.

Should we be surprised that he is so out-of-touch with the American people and their concerns? Should we be surprised that his answer to a child's dismay at the death and destruction is more of the same tired rhetoric:

"Democracy is on the march in Iraq .... I encourage you to support these service men and women who are willing to sacrifice for a cause greater than self," wrote the president.

Honestly, no, we should not be surprised - not when the Administration is content to ignore the facts, and mislead the public. The President would do well to take his own advice and support the service men and women by answering the question Americans of all ages are asking - What is our plan to succeed in Iraq and at what point can our troops begin to return home?

You took the time to post a this letter from a young girl asking the president about the war in Iraq and there is no mention of

US probe finds unprovoked killings in Haditha

I guess I should not be surprised, honestly.

what does it say? the answer is obvious. spin he will, and divert he has, because he doesn't have an answer. he never had a plan either.

WASHINGTON - President Bush said Wednesday he was troubled by allegations that U.S. Marines had killed unarmed Iraqi civilians and that, “if in fact laws were broken, there will be punishment.”

so, george bush breaks, not corrections, obliterates the colin powel pottery rule. has blamed the media and the iraqis themselves for his quagmire. now, he'll allow our finest, who were under the stress he created, to be charged and punished. perhaps, if the buck stopped where it is suppose to, then mr bush, mr cheney, and mr rumsfield assume some responsibility too?

"so, george bush breaks, actually, obliterates the colin powel pottery rule..."

America,

"In your anger"

I respect those words you wrote...because the killings in Haditha, were done by Marines, however it should be clearly stated:

I don't in any way condone the killing of civilians in a time of war, but a few things should be noted about what happens to soilders under stress. In order to stay alive in a combat situation your survival senses have to be maxed out at all times. Your body can accomplish this if you get angry and stay angry. This is actually a deep component of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

These soldiers are doing 2 and 3 tours, they are under enormous stress. The fact that these killings were covered up for over 4 months and allowed to be by the Defense Department, should anger everyone.

    lizzy,

i had to "chill" before i responded.

i'm more than just angry, i'm furious. This i'm afraid, will become a bigger issue overseas and what's left of america's already tarnished image, will be trashed.

and, my worst fear is our marines will be portrayed guilty by the rove-fox networks here, while mr bush, mr cheney, and mr rumsfield will have their butts covered by their friendly media, akd rove-fox networks.

    6
    america1st on May 31, 2006 at 05:06 PM

and one more thing...why does bush now, today, finally admit this? i'd sense since the networks that are independent of rove-fox brought this out, he's got to try and get in front of it.

(msnbc) "Snow said Tuesday that Bush was briefed about the killings by National Security Adviser Steve Hadley early this year when Time magazine began asking questions about the incident."

i'm convinced. bush is all about photo ops and lip service when he says "he cares."

    America,

The MahaBlog has the time line for the Haditha Massacre:

It is excellently done. Professional blogging at its finest.

and it is important to note: if Rep. Murtha hadn’t started talking about Haditha a couple of weeks ago, we in the U.S. probably would know even less about what happened than we’ve learned so far.

Curious isn't it that we are not hearing from other Democratic leaders...guess they saw the guantlet and turned tail and ran.

    lizzy,

thanks for web. i just checked it out. i'm guess i'm always a skeptic when it comes to what they'll finally report.

it remains to be seen how far anyone in the media and senate investigates. also, how much the bush adm will stone-wall and bluff that their policies had nothing to do with this.

if in fact laws were broken, there will be punishment.”

And this is the "everyman, ordinary guy" that the sheep voted for? The compassionate Christian conservative?

You might have thought Karen Hughs would have jumped on this young girl's letter as an opportunity to re-establish the "myth" she and Rove worked so hard at creating for the 2000 and 2004 campaigns.

Just like the Jessica Lynch tale, there is nothing real about the progress in Iraq that the White House insists is putting the insurgency... in it's last throes. It's just as fake as the man who sits in the Oval Office. A fake cowboy living on a fake ranch telling the common folk that the next president will take care of everything....instead of fixing what he broke.

If a little girl can tell the difference, they are in a lot worse trouble than we all thought. No wonder Hughs doesn't even try anymore. Her boss doesn't.

Why bother lying when everyone knows the truth?

So it's time for them all to pack up and go on down to "the ranch" for a three-month summer vacation only to return just in time to lay a wreath at Ground Zero on September 11.

The troops in Iraq will just have to wait in the heat of Iraq and Afganistan for the next president in '09 to give them orders. Mr. Bush will be busy shaking hands with His Base and passing around the collection plate for a bunch of corrupt Congressional Republicans who already have plenty of moola from corporate lobbyists.

I often wonder if those were blonde, blue eyed people sneaking over that border, if there would be quite as much objection!

And condemn China for it's human rights record and Taiwan, etc???

hey marty, those people OWN us, did you miss that? Our national debt is owed to them, as well as Japan.

Here's what I am going to suggest for you, marty.

quit spending your time coming in posting hatred and anger on a blog, and go and do something with this time yourself about all these problems . Call and write your congress people! write Letters to editors. Write Reporters at TV networks, like the Chris Matthews, Tim Russerts, Lou Dobbs, and tell them what you would like them to report on, and to stay fair and balanced. Get involved in a campaign, and make sure that guy wins in November.

In other words do something Constructive and positive for your country, and quit taking it out on us!

    "The MahaBlog..."

    liz,

i finally checked it out. so raises two questions. why now is mr bush so surprised?

(msnbc) "Snow said Tuesday that Bush was briefed about the killings by National Security Adviser Steve Hadley early this year when Time magazine began asking questions about the incident."

and, was mr bush motivated because the iraqis themselves were ready to launch their own investigation?

msnbc) "Meanwhile, Iraq’s prime minister said on Tuesday his patience was wearing thin with excuses from U.S. troops that they kill civilians by “mistake” and said he would launch an investigation into the Haditha killings.

“There is a limit to the acceptable excuses. Yes, a mistake may happen, but there is an acceptable limit to mistakes,” Nuri al-Maliki told Reuters when asked about the Haditha incident."

i'm convinced this is bush at work whenever he's been exposed as a photo op fraud...

"exposed, quick...need a cover...need a story...quick...need to show i'm engaged in this investigation...heck you all, don't worry, i'll get those marine murders. yes'ser'ree, we'll take'm to texas and we'll all string um' up. they's bad marines."

    America,

You are right, and the whole sad truth behind this massacre is that it was covered up for months.

Bush knew about it and he lied again, but he lies all the time. He just lied about Snow resigning last week.

I mean come on, the effing Commander in Chief does not know about a massacre in Haditha. I don't buy the crap that he was out of the loop or he learned about it from the Times.

This is Rumsfeld's work and he should hang for it. (figuratively, of course)

And what amazes me even more is that people don't want to talk about it. Murtha spoke from his heart yesterday and could you please tell me who else stood by his side???

I realize my views on the subject may be a bit soft but for goodness sake can we please compare apples to apples and stop villifying those that came here to try and build a better life for their families.

I understand that the issue needs to be addressed in a way that will actually fix the problem, but to equate a program that requires people to let the government know they are here, pay back taxes as well as cover the high costs of filing for legal status and for some require they return home before they can file to come back to their families doesn't exactly sound like amensty but you bite on the Rep. While I despise what the leftys stand for, I think it would be in the best interest of conservatism if the Democrats control Congress. The Republican party has failed to do their basic job which is to provide oversight. I am tired of Republican politicians claiming to be conservatives while promoting ultra-liberal policies. These Republican politicians need to be taught a lesson for their incompetence and their lack of leadership. Never again will I allow myself to be swindled!

at least a duck knows what it's quackin' about, what it's waddlin' among, and flyin' thru. i'd take the duck anyday.

(msnbc) "Attorney: 7 Marines, sailor face murder charges...8 to be charged in death of Iraqi civilian in April, defense lawyer says"

    "NBC News and news services
Updated: 2 hours, 55 minutes ago

SAN DIEGO - Military prosecutors plan to file murder, kidnapping and conspiracy charges against seven Marines and a Navy corpsman in the shooting death of an Iraqi man in April, a defense lawyer said Thursday."

instead of the buck stopping where it should, we get diversion and scapegoats for breaking, oops i meant, obliterating the colin powel pottery principle. and when will mr president, mr vice-president, and secretary of defense be charged with war crimes? of course this mr president could grant himself, and his vice and secretary, "immunity?" of course his buddy alberto, his special attorney general, would find a way assist in this language.

    Dear Mr. President,

Why are the republicans who voted for you so ignorant.

    Take SoccerDude for instance.

Here is a ridiculous troll who probably voted for you...

...and now that everyone has figured out the republicans are sellouts...

...losers like SoccerDude come here and pretend that they care about the DNC.

Where was idiots like SoccerDude when this blog was struggling.

They were probably out voting republican.

Please, tell us why the republicans who voted for you are so ignorant.

"BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The U.S. military is investigating the deaths of nearly a dozen Iraqi civilians during a U.S. raid near Balad in March.

The probe is one of several inquiries into the possible killings of Iraqis, including women and children, by U.S. troops. Among the incidents are an alleged massacre by Marines of 24 civilians in Haditha last November and the death of an Iraqi civilian near Hamandiya, west of Baghdad, on April 26.

Also under military investigation are reports that soldiers killed two women, including one who was pregnant, in Samarra on Tuesday."

mr president, what exactly is your version of a "war on terrorism?" and what exactly is happening on "your watch?"

    I respect your post.

But let's make a few things clear.

I am an independent and I'm a centrist.

    I am not a democrat.

Many long-time bloggers here at the DNC blog know me as well as administrative moderators do too.

I'm am not here posting on the DNC to appease the right wing.

I am not a liberal or a left wing nut.

My views about the republicans are undebatable and true.

right wing republicans would have no business reading posts on this blog if the republicans weren't so backwards on the blogosphere and in every decision they have made in the last six years.

I don't attack anyone who doesn't attack me first.

and I have expressed my views on this blog many times and just because you are new doesn't mean I'm going to re-explain anything anytime soon.

But to show you that I am a reasonable political debater...

I will whole-heartedly concede to your olive branch post.

I respect that you have offered me advice

and maybe I'll see your posts around.

    Price Supports

As WORKING AND POOR CLASS workers and consumers, do you qualify for Price Supports?

The answer is that you qualify to pay to support prices in an economy and market in which you have NO EQUITY, for the benefit of the ELITE CAPITALIST CLASS that OWN and CONTROL the economy and access to both the Means of Production and Distribution; and you may qualify for Food Stamps or Commodities that your cumulative contributions through TAXES bought from Business and Industry to support HIGH PRICES and ADDED VALUE to the ELITE CAPITALIST CLASS, while being forced by the Government to support HIGH PRICES that you as a part of the WORKING AND POOR CLASS do not have the resources to buy.

Why is it that the Government, State, Local, Federal, County and City, together with the ELITE CAPITALIST CLASS need resources from the WORKING AND POOR CLASS AND CULTURE to be able to make a profit and function in the performance of their duties and responsibilities; but the WORKING AND POOR CLASS does not, according to the law, need resources to fulfill their responsibilities under the law for the same responsibilities as the Government, Federal, State, County, City and ELITE CAPITALIST CLASS of Business and Industry?

Do these requirements ring in your ears as being oppression and tyranny? Oppression being to be burdened, subdued and forced to perform actions in the interest of others by harsh and wrongful use of power and authority, and tyranny being Government oppression?

Price Supports for the economy, markets and benefit of the ELITE CAPITALIST CLASS, paid for by the WORKING AND POOR CLASS AND CULTURE without benefit from their meager earnings to support an economy and markets where the WORKING AND POOR CLASS are ONLY passive consumers; like cattle that do not receive benefit, is oppression and tyranny.

Price Support continued from 6/5/06 04:32 PM Post

When will the WORKING AND POOR CLASS AND CULTURE awaken from their stuperous SLUMBER of acceptance of oppression and tyranny as liberty and freedom, and say NO, we, the WORKING AND POOR CLASS AND CULTURE, do not want to, and will not provide the cumulative resources of the benefit of our labor, so that the ELITE CAPITALIST CLASS can receive benefit from an economy and markets that DO NOT provide benefit to the WORKING AND POOR CLASS AND CULTURE; that we, the WORKING AND POOR CLASS AND CULTURE, want to share in the benefit of the economy and markets of the Nation,States,Counties and Cities, and we, the WORKING AND POOR CLASS AND CULTURE need our OWN benefit and resources, and will NOT willingly give our benefit and resources up to support others against our own best interest.

TG; When will you get in touch with the working people, and stop ranting.
Working people are definitely not going Republican this year where I am. I can't even get into a decent political discussion about Bush. People keep agreeing with me!
The Republicans aren't the problem, as much as the perception by many people I've talked to, that there IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE REPUBLICANS AND THE DEMOCRATS!
People are talking third party. Around here the Libertarians are making heavy gains. I don't think this will hurt us in the legislative elections. But in 2008, unless people's perceptions of the Democrat party change, the third parties will draw what would be otherwise Democrat votes away from the presidential candidates and could tilt the election toward the Republicans.
This is the 800lb gorilla in the living room, and he is still growing.
We need to find the best candidates for the job, and no Republi-lites need apply. People keep pointing them out as the problem with the Democrats. The common people aren't being fooled by the faux Democrat lable.
These are the "unaware working poor" that our limosine liberal friend TG keeps ranting about.
The workers don't need to wake up, the DNC does.

    Dear Mr. President,

Thank you for your stalwart defense of the country and for not taking serious consideration of the feelings of a ten year old girl when it comes to the defense of the nation. We all know that children and most democrats live in a fantasy world where everyone wants to be nice and there is no fear of a global caliphate in which crazed jihadists kill people for just being non-believers in their eyes.

Thank you for ending the string of Clinton enabled terrorist attacks around the globe and in this country that started in 93 and cilminated in 9/11. Your answer with American military might has prevented attacks here and has drawn the muslim extremists into a killing ground in Iraq.
While it has enabled democratic extremists to paint terrible pictures of you, at least they are free to do so.

Thank you for leading us into the strongest economy since the beginning of the world. Leave it to the democrats to complain about a 4.6% unemployment rate, but most americans realize the good job you're doing and are thankful for the fredom to work and strive.

Thank you for the tax cuts enabling all americans to keep more of their hard earned money.

And thank you for helping the republican house retian the san diego seat. I'm positive its a harbinger of the elections this nov.

    You WERE being sarcastic, right?

No. I'm not being sarcastic. The reason democrats are out of power is that democrats are out of touch with normal americans like me who like the president and what he's doing for the country. Regardless of what your push polls enable you to continue thinking.

Most of us like to keep the money we earn.
Most of us don't mind helping somewhat out, but we want it voluntary.
Most of us are sick and tired of your pathetic attempts to eliminate our superior Judean/Christian heritage and culture.

I'm proud of who we are and what we've done. And as far as I'm concerned the rest of world doesn;t have top like us, but they darn well better respect us. After all, everyone wants to come here because of our heritage, freedom, economy, and rule of law. They certainly don't want to come here because of socialistic democratic policies supported by the leftists. hey can get it for free anywhere in europe. But they want to come here and not europe.

My whole reason for posting was to let people like you know that there are unrepentant conservatives out here who won't swallow your tripe.

Am i right? We'll see in Nov when you loose again.

You say you're an unrepentant conservative. Do you WORK for a living? Did you say YES? Then I hardly think you're a conservative. If you're a conservative, you're surely living off your capital stock, aren't you? Did I hear you say, NO? I suspect you're one of those lumpen-proletariat conservatives that I've heard talked about that doesn't know what's in their own best interest, much less someone else. That's the way it goes. Apparently there's a bunch of these lumpens in California, if the VOTE was actually legal. I do not trust election results unless there are paper ballots for recount.

repal: Liking the president, and "normal American" are contradictions.
Most Americans I've talked to who consider themselves normal are very anti-Bush right now and feeling very angry because they've been betrayed so badly.
I don't know what tax cuts you think you got, but you had to be making over 100K per year to get much of any tax cuts out of the Bush administration and the rubber-stamp Republicans.
Let's see, the wages have not only stagnated, but regressed in real earning power, the "Homeland Security" is continually underfunded and badly mismanaged by Bushie cronies whose major talents seem to be kissing Bush butt, the "No Child Left Behind Act" has turned out to be a fraud, the Veterans' Administration has been funded at levels that won't help the vets on the roles, much less the newly disabled vets that Bush has created with his war that he justified with lies, the kids who are putting their lives on the line are being disrespected with Bush's targeted pay raises which gives the lowest paid soldiers the smallest percentage of pay raises, so their families have to scrape by. The Bush war has lost us respect throughout the world, and created the best recruiting ever for terrorist organizations. I could go on, but I doubt that, as a Republican you care about the health and welfare of the working poor, or about social responsibility.
If you think you are a "Normal American" who supports Bush, you are really on some heavy drugs, or your last name is Halliburton.

    Hello Martha,

    Here's a definition of Lumpenproletariat.

Every society has a group of people who can only be described by the German word "Lumpenproletariat." There is no equivalent English word for the brutal louts. The Nazis and the communists in pre-Hitler Germany understood the "Lumpen" can be a political force. In the early 1920s, the communists set up the Red Front Fighters League (the RFB). The Nazis soon established their Storm Troopers (the SA). The SA and RFB had similar uniforms, one with a swastika armband, the other with a hammer and sickle armband. They vied with each other for the title of most brutal and vile

I simply expressed my appreciation for President Bush, who I admire, and for the conservative principles that made this country great and will restore it. I made no threats to use force. I believe conservative principles most acurately reflect reality and that explains why they are effective and generate the most good for the most people.

Yes! I do work. I work harder than most. I have a full time job and a farm. I have been known to work over a hundred hours a week. I also have 4 children. And in spite of my work, I make sure they each get time with dad. My oldest is a very successful young person, mostly do to her conservative upbringing and stellar work ethic she learned from me.

No, I don't live off stocks. But I believe in capitalism. Before capitalism, there was fuedalism. While I enjoy my farm, I'm not interested in becoming a serf or a charcoaler. You seem to focus on negatives of capitalism, while ignoring the positives. No other system has elevated the living standards of ordinary people like you and me to such great heights.

Think about how well we live. We live better than kings and queens of the medival times. Common dieseases have been vanqished, thanks to those capitalistic drug companies. Travel is abore rather than an arduous and dangerous adventue, thanks to those capitalistic airlines and hotel chains. I can go the freezer and get a bowl of ice cream any time of the year.

I'll tell you what I tell my kids. Life isn't fair. Get over it. And work harder.

For you, I would add, don't get your exercise by jumping to conclusions. Without knowing anything about me as a person, you have essentially called me a nazi. This is a terrible thing to do and tells us much more about you than about me.

And this is why I decided to write my opinions here. President Bush is a great man, in my view. And I can not, in good conscience, not respond to the attacks against him that are regularly made.

If you have not read, "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand, I suggest that you do so. It's a classic novel that may give you a lot to think about.

I remain conservative to the core.

    Hello Butte,

Gosh, I thought I was reading an economic report from the Carter years. Let's move 30 years to the present. Low inflation, Unemployment extremely low (lower than clinton's years), high productivity, great GNP. Now, to be fair, oil prives have gotten high. But we have solutions to this:
    1. drill in anwar
    2. stop gore from jetting around the globe

As for homeland security, hmmmmm, no attacks since 9/11 here at home. Major plot in canada busted with our help. al quaeda on the run.
Zarkowi dead. Looks pretty good to me.

There is room for improvement. We do need to seal the southern border. I suggest we take over northern mexico and establish the rule of law there so that people can invest theri money in resorts and factories without having to worry about political and police corruption. Then all the jobs will be available locally.

Child left behind... My wife volenteers at our local public school. The scoop is that our entire district has performed better, and most especially, our elementary school since the program started. Don't even get me started on the poor underpaid teachers (50K for 9months work) with large classes (over 20 and they get an aid)

I'll take our current standing in the world. They may not like us, but they never did. They are into the same liberal left tendency to jealousy and eny over others that they perceive have more than them. And of course, we do. But it came at a price of blood, sweat, and tears. Also the discipline to live under the rule of law.

And what's with you guys with the ad-hominen attacks? Why do you automatically judge a person's character based on their political affiliation? Poverty and social welfare are immense and complicated discussions, which you've just reduced to a glib gotcha. I'm underwhelmed.

And, by the way, I've never done drugs in my entire life. Can you say that? So please don't cast stones. (that's a referecne to the bible, in case your not familiar with it - sorry - 2 can play!)
