DNC Commends CBC and African-American Leaders for Stance on Sudan

May 17, 2006

Today the Congressional Black Caucus along with TransAfrica staged a peaceful demonstration at the Sudanese Embassy to highlight the pressing crisis in Darfur. DNC Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement commending their efforts:

"I am grateful for the work of the Congressional Black Caucus along with humanitarian organizations which are helping to keep the spotlight on the tragic and devastating conditions that continue to exist in Sudan. The genocide in Sudan has driven more than 2 million people from their homes into refugee camps while 450,000 have died from famine, violence and neglect since 2003.

"Recently leaders in the region have been moving towards a peace agreement that would bring an end to the violence and to this humanitarian crisis. I hope that all parties continue to work together for a positive solution to cease the ongoing conflict. As a leader in the world, America should not turn our back on this crisis and must be vigilant in working towards a peaceful solution.

"The work of humanitarian groups, as well as aid from the U.S. government, has been invaluable to the people of Darfur. While we continue to grapple with issues here at home it is important not to forget those who continue to suffer abroad. I urge these groups to continue their positive work and efforts to keep the issue of genocide in Sudan on our national radar."
