Granholm Calls on Bush to Put Americans Above the Interests of Big Oil
May 4, 2006This week, the Democratic National Committee's Podcast features an interview with Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, who is one of many Democrats leading the charge to ease gas prices and put America on a path to energy independence. She outlined steps she has taken to achieve this goal.
"We've created a $2 billion 21st century jobs fund that is going to invest in companies and researchers that are doing groundbreaking work in the field of alternative energy. And we're also increasing our investment in ethanol production in Michigan. In the near future we're going to have five corn-to-ethanol plants on line in Michigan," said Granholm.
Granholm also called on President Bush to put the interests of Americans ahead of the interests of the oil industry.
"Right now we've got billions of tax dollars going to oil companies in the form of tax giveaways that was provided in that legislation. We've also got billions of dollars being wrung from the pockets of our consumers through higher gas prices. To me, it seems like the legislation was designed to help big oil, because that has been the end result," said Granholm. "We need to stand together, we need to have our voices unite in saying to the President and to Congress, 'It is time to stand up for us, the American citizens. Stop standing up for big oil, stand up for everyday people.'"
