With a beautiful three day weekend ahead of us, there is no time like the present to volunteer and help take back our country.

Take the time this weekend to reach out to local candidates and consider spending a few hours volunteering this weekend. Senate, Congress, Governor, State House or School Board. All of these campaigns can use a few good men and women.

Why not you?

Have some fun and do some good.

NO TROLLS ALLOWED!! It will be a LOOOOOOOONG weekend, and trolls will be rampant.

BEWARE OF NAME HIJACKING AGAIN!!!

Those who seem to be posting aren't actually the ones who are doing it.

WATCH OUT FOR SUBTLE DIFFERENCES IN SPELLING OR PUNCTUATION OF THE BLOGGER'S NAME.

The trolls are out of "rehab" or "school" or "Prison", or...

Mike Malloy mentions there IS NO OPPOSITION PARTY only some opposing Democrats.

(I don't know how I functioned as a citizen before Air America)

25 "democrats" proved their inability to STAND up today and OPPOSE this REGIME that is trying to turn this into another NAZI GERMANY!!

With that many lambs willing to follow to the slaughter is there any hope at all?????

good evening. looks like there are more porcupine needles to pull out of the presidunce's ass:

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iran has a right to develop nuclear technology and the international community should drop its demands that Tehran prove it's not trying to build a nuclear weapon, Iraq's foreign minister said Friday.

"Iran doesn't claim that they want to obtain a nuclear weapon or a nuclear bomb, so there is no need that we ask them for any guarantee now," Hoshyar Zebari said after meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Manouchehr Mottaki.

Iran's nuclear ambitions are "an international issue," Zebari said. "In our beliefs, it is a matter of principle. Every country has the right to have its nuclear technology, every country like the Islamic Republic or any other country, since it is for peaceful purposes."

that supports our position nicely...hahahahaha...

it was pure arrogance on the part of the US Administration to assume they could replace saddam with a government made from the fuedal tribes that would be sympethetic to them. Having them side with another Islamic nation right out of the box was a bit of a no-brainer, any such government that sided with someone thought of in the region as a war criminal would have no hope of legitimacy to those they presume to govern.
ol condilingus shoulda seen that one coming, being the secretary of state and all... since she was previously the national security advisor, it should have been even more obvious since it is kinda the duty of that position to know how the enemy might think.

nice piece at the village voice about gore's presentation to a packed crowd of i imagine a few thousand at town hall, times square, manhattan:

Al Gore and the Moral Imperative
By Anya Kamenetz | May 26, 2006

"Our political system has something in common with the earth's climate," Al Gore is saying to wild applause. "It is non-linear. Change can seem to be happening slowly, and then it can shift to a completely new path." The former vice president and current star of the documentary An Inconvenient Truth (official site: climatecrisis.net) was describing, to a packed house at Town Hall in Times Square yesterday, why he feels more hopeful than the most pessimistic scientists that the most serious consequences of global warming can be averted.

The event was full of hope, much of it taking a decidedly partisan shape and residing in the figure of Mr. Gore himself. "I wanted to get this chance to see the next president of the United States," said Bryan Snyder, waiting in line with his 17-year-old son Spencer. "I wouldn't be surprised if people looked at him with fresh eyes after this movie." Neither would the New York Times, New York Magazine, or liberal bloggers.

I've been kinda busy the past few months trying to recover from the "prosperity" of the country. I got "prosperitied" right out of my job in December, and just got a new one last month. But yay! I'm now a real developer, instead of just playing one on my computer. Now all I need is something that doesn't eat as much gas as my pick-em-up truck (yes, I know, I'm a BAD progressive...but heck, I do live in Texas).

But it is such a joy to listen to Air America during the LOOOOOONG drive time...I always enjoy yelling at Randi on my way home when she doesn't quite have her facts straight...but it's more fun when I drive along singing "I'm the Decider", lol!

Marine,

I define trolls as individuals who attack other bloggers but never state their own views or stay on topic.

I don't agree with you on many occasions but I never get into heated debates with you because you never aggressively attack anyone to get your point across.

So I just read your posts so I know what you're thinking, I respect your diverse views and move on.

I have never had reason to define you as a troll.

As a matter of fact, I remember when I first started blogging here. You were one of the first blogger I remember reading.

48
Benji on May 26, 2006 at 11:39 PM

Tune, that describes everyone and anyone who has a conversation online.

49
Marine on May 26, 2006 at 11:39 PM

tune, i never heard such a clear definition of troll as used in the two dimensional world.

50
gregg on May 26, 2006 at 11:39 PM

We have two people here (at the moment, anyway) who have certain basic troll characteristics:

They are unable or unwilling to take responsibility for their words or behavior.

They are unable or unwilling to consider the possibility that they have brought a great deal of dislike upon themselves.

I don't know for certain, but my feeling is that each of them is filled with self-hate, and is unable to face that issue.

Definitely a better job, if not better paying. And yeah, the pickup comes in handy for home projects, and hauling the riding mower to the shop when I forget to put oil in it and need a new engine. Hmmm....wonder if anyone is making ethanol or bio-diesel engines for mowers? They really are bigger polluters than cars. Unfortunately, practicality is going to win out over conscience for me in that regard. I am not mowing an acre with a manual mower.

Seriously - good to see everyone having a real debate around these parts. I think it's one of the great things about our side of the aisle - that we respect and encourage good debate and honest exchanges.

Only then do we grow our Party and expand our perspectives.

UK lawmaker says assassinating Blair would be justifiable...Friday, May 26, 2006; Posted: 11:30 p.m. EDT (03:30 GMT)

LONDON, England (AP) -- Maverick Member of Parliament George Galloway has said it would be "morally justified" for an assassin to target Prime Minister Tony Blair...he would like to go a few rounds with both Blair and Bush.

"I'd take them both at once," Galloway said.

"That's what really upsets me. They are the sort of men who are ready to fight to the last drop of other people's blood. They couldn't personally punch their way out of a paper bag. They send other mothers' sons to their death, and I find them both deeply repugnant," he said."

From the NSA site:

Americans expect NSA to conduct its missions within the law. But given the inherently secret nature of those missions, how can Americans be sure that the Agency does not invade their privacy?

The 4th Amendment of the Constitution demands it... oversight committees within all three branches of the U.S. government ensure it... and NSA employees, as U.S. citizens, have a vested interest in upholding it. Respecting the law is only a part of gaining Americans' trust.

*********
This, from an agency that just finished refusing the DoJ and FCC to investigate what appears to be clear violations of the constitution...

Remind me later to send these guys an email saying thanks for the laff... oh never mind, they can just read it here. bastards.

Love the kid bit, nice recruiting stunt there. I bet if you dig hard enough you will find a "snitch on your folks" program in there somewhere

Albuquerque, I think that there were three of us who realize just how much garbage the whole arguement "Businesses will just leave if they can't get cheap immigrant labor" is. We understand that most of these jobs are hopelessly connected to resources here in the United States, but most don't appear to. Heck, they don't even realize how giving business access to an enormous immigrant labor force might affect the livelihoods of Americans who seek to shrink the gap between the wealthy and the poor not expand it further.

I think they are aware of the issues, most of them at least. enough of them that understanding the finer points is not all that important.
Issues are:
-border is too open.
-illegal immigration is not good for anyone except businesses here that are forced to sell in a market with little or no disposable income.
-new immigration quotas are disproportional to the job creation curve.

Defining and redefining the issues, over and over ad nausem, does not cause solutions. You have repeatedly stated your view of the problem, so what say we moveon.org and you present some of your ideas to resolve the issues at hand?

Life in the U.S. changed after Regan took office. I met Regan and talked with him for about 10 minutes. He was a nice guy, but I disagree with his economic policies.
Before Regan, people were concerned about each other and their country. Ever since Regan came to office people changed to "It's all about Me". And that is the way U.S. Businesses are now.

People are still concerned about each other and their country... Reagan didn't change much there.. his policy was however a major turning point, as that was the first time the economic policy for the entire nation was discarded and replaced with one to placate the masses while entrenching the rich into their position of being able to own the government.

A wall is wishful thinking. show me a 50 foot wall, i'll show you a 51 foot ladder. it will cost billions upon billions for a 2000+ mile wall that will have the effect of adding about 5 minutes to a borderjumper's travel time.

Personel should be utilized most certainly. for the cost of 100 miles of wall they can have 10 years of effective border patrol.
Electronic surveilance should be added, initial cost investment with little in the way of upkeep expenses

hoipolloi,

Because of the large area and the cost of man power. I worked in an area with a 10 mile perimeter that called for a minimum of 100 fully armed personnel for every shift. Not to mention the four fences with one wired with 10,000 volts.
The cost would be too much.

aside from the odd batch of cubans that come in on floating trucks, the mexicans are the only ones who can (and do) sprint across the border. Yes they are a small percentage of refugees and/or immigrants. However, unless people overseas have suddenly learned to walk on water, the only ones in a position to stream across the border illegally are the canadians and the mexicans.
the canadians don't bother, because they hate american beer.
so, what are you left with? political correctness does not trump logic or fact.

Here's an interesting site many in the Sierra Club use for examining immigration and its cause and effect on urban sprawl, landfills, public education, county hospitals, and public schools among other things.

It is primarily a non-party affiliated Democrat site which questions the sustainability of our current immigration policies. Its conclusions are not racist just factual analysis.

I agree, I thought alot of the republicans was against confirming him. Did you e-mail your Senator with your opinion? For some reason, he was confirmed quickly.

At any rate, i was attempting to draw marine out on his actual ideas. I'm sure he has stated them before, but they are usually mixed so thoroughly with statements saying everything we do and think is wrong that the points are entirely missed. He has some very good points, and he understands the problem. I give him that. So far, tho, no one has been able to understand his solutions.

News from the Hill:

FBI beefs up staff to probe pols

By Alexander Bolton

Federal law-enforcement officials say they witnessed a dramatic jump in campaign-finance and other election-related crimes in the 2004 presidential election year and are determined to beef up their policing of candidates running for federal and local office around the country this year.

Treat those who employ or otherwise aid persons here illegally to the absolute worst torture one could imagine. Give them to the governments from which those individuals fled. Ask that those governments imprison them for two months and then release them in the toughest area of their country from which they may make their way back to the United States. We'll call it sensativity training.

HEY, {{fade}} AVOID BUD AND BUD LIGHT!! They changed the recipes and tried to deny it, just like the typical PUG LIARS ALWAYS DO!..

NOW I'm stuck with an entire weekends worth of this crapola which "tastes" like (fill in the blank)

Clysedale P**S and they LIE about it

But, on a personal note, I was trying to get some tickets for the Cardinals (on line) and I tried to do it through the Cubs web site and I discovered that the CUBS WEB SITE IS CLOSED FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON!!

(Just KIDDING!!)

As it turns out, the Cubs just can't put 3 "W"'s in a row.

I emailed my Senator this morning, thanking him. Senator Durbin is the best! Senator Obama is learning and he's been doing a lot better. Wish there were more like ours, here in the great state of Illinois. Our governor is awesome, too.

For those of you discussing just what percentage of our criminal immigrants are Mexican I'll say this: The U.S. Government asks one question regarding race now, Hispanic or non-Hispanic. Oh and we get to push 2 for Spanish. Yes, I'm sure that much of this is the result of legal immigration, but don't forget we had an influx of illegal immigrants prior to '86 who must be considered when one looks to determine the total number of criminal immigrants we might expect to enter the country over a period of time. We might also compare these numbers in our attempts to determine just how much Reagan's Amnesty gift helped or hurt us in our attempts to regulate immigration since.

Tune, do you REALLY think the immigration debate was the only thing worth discussing tonight.

we have a freakin' GENERAL heading up the CIA, with the cojones to not retire. no one sees a problem here?

One of my Senators, Levin said he voted yea because the guy promised to act independently of the administration - something like that.
I usually like Levin. (He really grills them at the hearings.) I didn't like him this week tho cause of his vote Thursday but my gal, Stabenow, came through.
Anyway, when I heard his 'splaination I said "whaa??"
Goodnite everyone.

It is clearly not a solution to hide the number of individuals illegally entering or staying in the United States each year by increasing the number of immigrants allowed in to outrageously high numbers as appears to be the best solution that the Senate could come up with. My son use to think that all you had to do if you ran out of money was to right a check. Now, this isn't exactly righting a check as my son would have suggested but it amounts to pretty much the same thing. Hide the numbers daddy.

The Sierra Club is "primarily a non-party affiliated Democrat ..."

The contradiction in that statement almost makes sense in a nonsensical sort of way.

Are you talking about the same Sierra Club which was started by John Muir?

Wasn't Teddy R a Pug?

looks good on paper, and enforces the concept that law breaking is not to be accepted..

however.... what chance is there that the USA could deport 11 million people, all of whom would undoubtedly lay claim to refugee status and would demand a hearing? by law they would have to get their hearing. Would cost many billions, and take many decades.

Also, the idea of having them jailed there is a total non-starter. first, that would justify their refugee claim, since one of the base claims for that status is the threat of imprisonment for political or other unjust reasons. They left cuz they thought the government sucked. leaving the country is not illegal, the way they entered the USA is but only in USA. So they broke no law there, jail is off the table.

I actully wrote a couple fairly long posts in this morning's open thread on just this topic, the possible options and the results of each.. rather than repost, read here and here

actually the CIA thing is a huge issue too.. however it is a potentially short-lived one, congress can out him first time he screws up.. and if the pugs lose 2008, as we expect them to, he will be replaced unless he is in fact doing what he's supposed to do.

The Sierra Club's members are more than 750,000 of your friends and neighbors. Inspired by nature, we work together to protect our communities and the planet. The Club is America's oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.

The Sierra Club is a nonpartisan organization that works to support pro-environmental candidates for elected office. Our efforts range from voter education and grassroots action to candidate endorsements and direct candidate support.

And yes, Teddy R was a repug, but not like the repugs of today. Muir helped form an environmental organization called the Sierra Club on May 28, 1892 and was elected as its first president (a position he held until his death 22 years later).
