Memorial Day Open Thread

Posted by on May 29, 2006 at 12:30 PM

Did you know:

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that:

The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

During the first celebration of Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery.

This 1868 celebration was inspired by local observances of the day in several towns throughout America that had taken place in the three years since the Civil War. In fact, several Northern and Southern cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Columbus, Miss.; Macon, Ga.; Richmond, Va.; Boalsburg, Pa.; and Carbondale, Ill.

In 1966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon Johnson, declared Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day. They chose Waterloo—which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—because the town had made Memorial Day an annual, community-wide event during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

By the late 1800s, many communities across the country had begun to celebrate Memorial Day and, after World War I, observances also began to honor those who had died in all of America's wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May. (Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor all veterans, living and dead, is celebrated each year on November 11.)

Today, Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Also, it is customary for the president or vice-president to give a speech honoring the contributions of the dead and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually.

Bombs Kill Dozens in Iraq, Including CBS Crew Members

BAGHDAD, Iraq (May 29) - CBS News said Monday that two of its crew members were killed in an attack on a U.S. military unit in Iraq. Correspondent Kimberly Dozier was seriously wounded, the network said.

The network identified the dead as cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan.

The three journalists were embedded with a team from the Fourth Infantry Division when the convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device on Monday, CBS said.

That blast was one of many Monday and they came a day after a tribal chief who challenged Iraq's most feared terrorist and sent fighters to help U.S. troops battle al-Qaida in western Iraq was gunned down.

Vets Fighting for Jobs on Home Front

While the job market may feel like it's starting to pick up for most Americans, veterans between the ages of 20 and 24 are three times as likely to be unemployed on average. While no one questions their bravery or work ethic, some employers may struggle to understand how their military skills will translate.

Oh, I see. Those who are still fighting "the lost cause" are patriotic?

I think Momoaizo is correct about repeating a message often. Earlier, I had suggested a phrase that says: "This election is about preserving and protecting the Constitution". It says it all. What do you all think? Do you think that by repeating this often enough that folks will finally understand what's at stake here? By the way, I'm very new here. I'm from Northern California (Humboldt County). I've been reading this blog for about a year before finally posting for the first time on Wednesday.

dk2, is this the new White House "Stamp Out Democracy" strategy for the fall?

Why do I get the feeling Gonzales is at the bottom of this one, too? I wish he'd just get mad and take his Top Secret stamp and warrantless searches and go home....and take General NSA/FBI with him.

You do have to admit that they work well together as a secret police tag team for Notorious George and the rest of the crime family. I wonder what South American country they plan to "retire" to when the next administation begins to re-open up those "public" files. Nice that they are letting us know which ones might be of interest to prosecutors.

It's amazing. This administration operates just like a banana republic...right down to the irresponsible economic policy and intimidation of the legislative branch.

Does ANYONE really believe that the Nazis in the White House aren't listening in on phone calls?

An answer for Caller ID

(snip)

The technical term for it is called "Caller ID spoofing," but it was only available to law enforcement agencies, private detectives and the geeks who knew how to do it.
.....
Whether you decide to use it or not, at least you know of its existence. Now you know to take what you see on your Caller ID's display with a grain of salt
.....
The next option lets you choose to disguise your voice. You can select either male or female, with the male voice having a slightly better quality. You're not going to fool anyone with these voices, as both of them sound electronically processed. They're going to know it's not a real person's voice. Still, either of them will effectively disguise your voice from its actual tonality.

The other option you can choose before the call is placed is to record the conversation. If you choose this option, both sides of the conversation will be recorded.

I believe that the majority of our problems stem from Corporate Welfare/Regulatory Capture/Federal Taxpayers Subsidies to Business:

Corporate welfare corrupts the political process. One perverse, but predictable outcome of a $100 billion-plus corporate welfare state is that industry begins to view Congress, rather than consumers, as their real customers. Moreover, industry has done an all effective job at protecting their subsidies.

This is from a TESTIMONY of Stephen Moore
Director of Fiscal Policy Studies Cato Institute
Washington, D.C. before the Budget Committee
U.S. House of Representatives Corporate Subsidies in the Federal Budget on June 30, 1999

repeat from the top thread:

I want to take this day to give a special {{hug}} to all my fellow soldiers (marines, navy,AF,even the guard and reservists now realizing what it's like to serve FULL time 24/7 for the cause). No more weekend warriors indeed.

I only apologize that SOME of you got caught up in this illegal invasion and brainwashed into thinking it was some kind of holy war for the good of America! And not in fact for the corporate GREED of a small percentage of the top earners in this country.

I pray those of you that wish to return HOME will be able to do so and soon. I have no sympathy for the haters who joined only to "kill some foreigners" and have little patience with the brain dead parents of those good kids who were tricked into serving in this mess!

ALL others who have served with honor and dignity for the REAL causes of protecting this nation........... I salute you!

The BUCK for this SHAM stops at the TOP! We'll be investigating this fraud for years to come. I only hope GW and Chainsaw live long enough to be properly held accountable and driven to the nearest prison in chains!! where they belong! The attack came as the convoy passed through Tahariyat Square, just across the river from the Green Zone, around 10:30 a.m. Monday (3 a.m. ET).

The convoy victims were among at least 50 people killed in insurgent attacks in Iraq on Monday.

(cnn) KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- A deadly traffic accident Monday involving U.S. troops sparked the worst riot in the Afghan capital since the fall of the Taliban. At least eight people were killed and 107 injured, an official said.

lizzy,

this is a sad memorial day. and i'm sure a lot of people will see today with mixed feelings. honoring those yet wondering where this day with this horrific news out of iraq and now afghan' sliding backwards will all end. george bush reminds me of an arrogant child. warned to not disturb the "pottery (rule)" and he does as any arrogant immature child would do. then, photo ops on the 911 rubble to proclaim he'll get those responsible...dead or alive...to conviently invade iraq.

this question should be posed to this immature child, the cause of 911, where is osama on this memorial day?

I'm not at all convinced that producing Osama at this point would do SQUAT for W. As a matter of fact, I am not at all convinced that he or his cohorts don't have Osama secretly tucked away somewhere outside the U.S. at one of those gulags (with a dialysis machine plugged in) awaiting for just the perfect moment say in OCT to bring him to some pretent court like where they have Hussein.

I am not at all convinced of that at all. Getting more suspicious every day with every leak and every news article that sees the light of day.

America, I hear ya, Good Buddy! This is truly a sad day, but it has always been, remembering the souls that were lost during war. I cannot remember where I read it but someone commented that they felt the true meaning of Memorial Day was lost.

Lost among the hot dogs and hamburgers and beer all the picniking. I agree. Tell me one barbeque party that takes a moment of silence to remember the fallen before they start drinking and eating. We had a party yesterday, but today we are just remembering the fallen.

Oh America, I wish so much more could be done. I become so impatient. And that is where you will find me....planting the impatience in my garden.

here's a link to a blog that took place over a few days, they were talking about a firm called Wackenhut....a company that the shrubs don't want people to know that they were associated with....perhaps because of the ablility on the internet for many heads to get together and think, to bring in back-up for their thoughts and opinions, it is getting harder and harder for them to hide their crimes in the public anymore...perhaps this is why the bush administration wants to classify everything possible along with "privitizing" the internet....

Afternoon all,

Remember when we used to wonder if Cheney was calling the Shots, and ole dubya was just the puppet! Well wonder no more.

WASHINGTON -- The office of Vice President Dick Cheney routinely reviews pieces of legislation before they reach the president's desk, searching for provisions that Cheney believes would infringe on presidential power, according to former White House and Justice Department officials.

The officials said Cheney's legal adviser and chief of staff, David Addington , is the Bush administration's leading architect of the ``signing statements" the president has appended to more than 750 laws. The statements assert the president's right to ignore the laws because they conflict with his interpretation of the Constitution.

The Bush-Cheney administration has used such statements to claim for itself the option of bypassing a ban on torture, oversight provisions in the USA Patriot Act, and numerous requirements that they provide certain information to Congress, among other laws.

PamB,

This guy has a lot in common with Rove and his obession with Hillary....

That is the difference between them and us. They have turned abusive. Yes, that does make a difference. I've encountered some recovering abusers on the net, and I learned a few things from that experience. The one thing that sustains an abuser is denial; an abuser cannot allow himself to be open to the slightest possibility that he is harming another human being. They blame anyone and anything else in sight, but virtually all of that blame is directed at the victim, in one way or another. Abusers REFUSE to take responsibility for their behavior.

In dealing with an abuser, particularly from a treatment perspective, the first and most important step is to break that denial. It is not only breaking the denial about hurting other people. It is essential to break the denial that they are not responsible for their behavior. They must learn that they have to take responsibility for everything that they do, and it is a hard lesson to teach.

Until an abuser's denial is broken, it is dangerous to give them any sympathy. Sympathy gives them a way out, a way to avoid taking responsibility. Someone else made them the way they are; they're not responsible. This is utter garbage, and to give them this opening is truly a disservice.

(Diane Wilson speaks from her soapbox)

Afghans often complain about what they call the aggressive driving tactics of the U.S. military. Convoys often pass through crowded areas at high speed and sometimes disregard road rules. The U.S. military says such tactics are necessary to protect the troops from attack.

It was included in the article regarding the humvees that hit Afghan Civilians and then shot the rioters who reacted to the accident.

Not a good day in Kabul, Afghanistan.

BTW, I happened to click onto C-span the other night and they were showing the British Parliament from a week ago.

Funny thing, Tony Blair was ALSO discussing Immigration problems in THEIR country. I wonder if Karl Rove told him to throw that out there, in an effort to try and make his approval rise?

Just like Bush, except for one thing. Bush is calling for Open Borders, Blair was calling for Securing his!

Military Deaths
The Los Angeles Times

Sunday 28 May 2006

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq or who died at a US hospital of their injuries:

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Michael L. Hermanson, 21, of Fargo, North Dakota; specialist, Army National Guard. Hermanson was killed Tuesday when his mine-protected vehicle was attacked with a rocket-propelled grenade and then came under small-arms fire while his unit was on patrol to clear roadside bombs near Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 164th Engineer Battalion, Army National Guard in Minot, N.D.

Thank you again Lizzy for your help, Hey Dawnie, hope you are having another fine day.....

the other nite, Tom Terrific posted a link to the song A Song Of Peace, i tried going back to it to get the lyrics, remember singing that in church...

so I found the lyrics: A Song Of Peace
THIS IS MY SONG

This is my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on clover-leaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
Oh, hear my song, O God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountainside,
A song of peace.
Arranged and performed by Harmonious Combustion

And a link to just the song and a link to the song and a video, put out by Cindy Sheehan....

if anyone wants to truly FEEL what Memorial day is all about, watch this.....

Another FYI, when this site started, there was a link feature to connect e addy to ones name. Because all the trolls (paid by the Heritage Foundation, BTW) spammed, and confiscated people's e-addies, most regulars stopped using that feature.

Some even had kiddie porn sent to their home and work computers.

The Pugs will stop at nothing less than the worst and lowest depths of the bowels of Hell just because they think it's fun.

Right after {{JOAN}} got the news that her son was being sent to Little Georgie's Hormone Spurt, some asswipe posted dozens of pictures and movies of people being beheaded, with a "lock on" feature so that the actual computer owner couldn't even use the ESC. BACK or Refresh keys until that video was done.

I naively clicked on one titled
"Hey Guys, Check THIS Out", which was posted by a hijacked name.

THIS IS WHY THERE IS A FEDERAL LAW WHICH NOBODY SEEMS TO WANT TO TELL "*SOMEONE*" ABOUT.

Name hijacking ain't cool.

The reason that I asked, is because "cam58", and "marty58" could have been the same "Marty in California 58", i.e., caM(arty)58.

K? My name has been hijacked several times, as have others'. With the implosion of the Pubie Party, it will only get more frequent.

pamb,

i'm also tired about hearing their spins... "militants" and "insurgents" and this "axis of evil" and "war on terrorism"

maybe, just maybe, after the recent news about iraqi civilians being murdered by a marine unit, today CBS reporters dying in iraq, and this now developing uprising in afghanistan americans will realize that maybe the "big-bad-boogie man" does not reside in iran, nor north korea, nor cuba, nor venezuela...it currently resides in the whitehouse.

Someone needs to take both Peter Beinart and Michael Tomasky to task.

These guys are still ignorant. Liberals are against this war, because we can smell a lie a mile away. Iraq has nothing to do with defeating terror. For two guys who seem to be stuck in 1948, they surely fail to learn from the past:

Most "hard" wars are unnecessary.
Korea? Vietnam? 1st Gulf War?

The "cold war" was unnecessary.
Ronald Reagan negotiated. (He also backed Saddam Hussein while "cutting and running" from Lebanon)

Exploding military budgets (most of the money never gets to the troops) criple the domestic economy (resulting in either increased taxes or generational debt).
And you wonder why there was no money to completely fix the New Orleans' levees (or how about any other major domestic need).

So, someone tell Peter Beinart to stop comparing the "war on terror" with the "cold war" (King George's talking points) and remind Michael Tomasky why we are REALLY the target of religious extremists: We stick our nose in EVERYONE'S business just a little too much.

The Taliban started off with appx 45,000 members. The last figures I saw was 4-5,000 killed or captured. I'd say their recruiting efforts are going better than ours and winters over. They are coming back to town from the hills and hollers and they are not going to be playing.

I blame the President, he failed to equip the soldiers with the necessary equipment.

yep lizzy,

he broke the "pottery rule." unfortunately, we the taxpayers, are stuck paying the price tag both in monetary terms and allowing our sons and daughters to shed their blood for his world-war-crusades.

85
america1st on May 29, 2006 at 05:44 PM

The soldiers and the Marine were all killed by IED's. There exists such a thing as an IED jammer. For $47,000/vehicle, our children can be saved from most of the IED attacks. The Pentagon has decided that $47,000 is too much to spend to keep our children alive!!! Halliburton steals that much from the Pentagon before the CEO's first cup of morning coffee. For the two vehicles that were destroyed and the 6 of our children killed, it comes to a little over $15,000 per person. Not to be crass, but the government will be handing each family a check for $100, 000.00 soon (the deaths are still "pending") and $400,000.00 in insurance death benefits. I know each family would mortgage their homes, or sell their souls, if they knew it would have cost $15,000.00 to keep their precious family member alive.

What's worse, our troops in Iraq have not been given the equipment they need. According to the Pentagon, one-quarter of our soldiers lack the Kevlar vests and ceramic plating that can stop bullets fired from AK-47s or shrapnel from rocket-propelled grenades. Of the 15,000 Humvees in Iraq, fewer than 2,000 have the armored plating that can protect their occupants from roadside bombs.

I have heard from parents in Memphis who have been forced to buy protective gear to send to their sons and daughters in Iraq. Rushing this equipment to our soldiers should be our highest priority.

Re: Taliban...
With all the media hype, a fact that was mentioned once or twice then discarded has been since forgotten..

Taliban = student. Thats what taliban means. we are talking about winning a war against students of a culture, an enemy who's forces are replaced with every graduating class, who have been indoctrined (correctly, perhaps) that their religion and the dominance of their own religion in their own country is being warred upon by those who seek profit...
I think we all know the determination of our own students, our own taliban. the 4 dead in ohio only steeled their resolve.

This is the force we fight there.

They were stoning women and men if they were caught talking to each other from other families, it wasnt allowed at all, marriages were pre arranged.
So call it student if you want, but seven years ago I was wondering why the UN wasnt doing anything and where were all the humanity groups because noone was shouting about the taliban, there was shouting about aparthied and somolia and everywhere else, but not the taliban

Evening all fine dems. I copied this from another blog. Its a wake up call to me...I didn't realize that locals really can have cable access. I am sharing in hopes that some of you might look into doing your own programs. My Friend's Post:

On the track of thinking globally but acting locally, consider this:

When (x) and I proposed having a primary candidates' forum sponsored by the grange that happens to be within our Community Planning Organization and the CPO (an advisory committee to the County Commissioners here), we were told nobody'd come. We said we'd get the candidates (23 out of 31 from the Governor's office to the County Clerk - 4 Federal candidates were working in Washington) if the Grange and CPO would get the audience. They had a crisis of confidence and we did better than they!) However, we taped it, (x) edited it, and it was aired locally on two different cable outlets with a potential audience of 200K people. I've had a surprising number of folks who recognized me (I was the MC) tell me they watched it.

The point is this: every place there's cable, there's a public access channel and a facility that will loan equipment and show you how to use it. Clackamas Democrats have a monthly TV show that has good success getting name brand politicos and issue experts. We even get Tom Hartmann of Air America to do a gig every now and then. We have our own set, run a fairly stable 7 man crew that covers a three camera set up. It's line edited and cable cast live and then repeated periodically during the month and on other cable outlets as well. If a show is particularly interesting, we find ways to publicize it. Active Democrats watch it regularly.

Public Access Cable is under used and potentially valuable. It costs absolutely nothing to use. We're in danger of losing it because the cable companies don't like paying for it. If you get your local party, clubs, and issue advocates to use it, and if you tell your reps you want it, we'll be able to keep it. It's the only place I know of that ordinary folks can reach an audience with their unfiltered message.

Find out from your cable company where their facility is; get in touch with your County party chair and promote a regular program; tape special events; tape training sessions - tape a door to door canvassing or telephone canvassing training session and then air it for those who could not attend. Unless it's a political ad, contains obscene material, or is technically deficient (that means that it's on the wrong medium, as garbled sound, or was shot in the dark) they have to air it. You then own the tape and can do with it what you want. If it's good enough, offer it to your State Committee. (x and I shot the Democratic Gubernatorial Debate a couple of months before the primary and gave the tape to the State Committee. It ran in Clackamas county and I understand they edited it further and used it in places outside of Metro Portland. We couldn't believe they hadn't thought of it themselves. We won't have to do it again.)

And there's no reason you can't do PSA's either. They really want material. We're working on a 30 second get out the vote spot; a support your library spot; and a series of short, illustrated readings from diaries kept by settlers who came by wagon to Oregon City (the end of the Oregon trail). We have gotten cooperation from both the Oregon Historical Society and the Oregon Trail Museum for that one. It's fun, with modern equipment, even numb knuckles like me can make good pictures. Even the sound is good - I have a leg up here because I did voice overs for a living in a previous life.

Look into it: your voice can be heard and your message amplified.

you missed my point.. while true that they ruled with juvinile brutality and intollerance, it is also true that they were practicing a form of "islamic law". Saudi isn't much better in that track record. That set aside for the moment, consider these students themselves.
Brought up in a culture where the man rules the home and the mother says not a word in protest, and their religious leaders staunchly defend it, these young men can't help but feel it is the way things SHOULD be.

Now along comes America which previously, because it was advantagious to do so, had not so much as raised an eyebrow.. only now, they want to change things. they want to instill disobediance in women, they want to promote sex, they want the women walking around damn near naked and they want to rape islam for it's oil.

The truth of it is irrelivant. It's what they were weaned on, it's what they believe. Same way we were raised to believe that our government is on our side in the face of historical events which prove otherwise.

This is, and always has been (to them) a religiously motivated war. shrub doesn't help matters with his crap about talking to god. He makes it worse when he goes on television lighting candles for hanukka. and the troops are there to liberate the people from the evil of the religion they were raised on.
They cut off the hands of theives.. ask a muslim the best solution, he will say "don't steal".
when you tell them it isn't a war against islam, they don't believe you. that is the crux of it.

hypothetical reverse: say some jackasses got into the government here and started passing laws that covered women head to toe... the colleges would not stand for it, they would revolt. not because it shot a hole in the constitution, but because it would offend everything they have known from birth.

This morning on Meet the Press, Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, delivered a strong rebuke of Bush’s assessment of what’s going on in the Middle East:

I think you could make a pretty strong case that things are worse off in the Middle East today than they were three years ago. By measurement of Iraq, by Iran, by the Palestinian-Israeli issue, what’s going on in Egypt. And, I think the United States must use its force of diplomacy to engage Iran.

Hagel isn’t alone in making his argument that the Middle East is worse off since the Iraq invasion.

Some liberal media we have, right? We have to get stories of Bush's Lies and Cheating from International sources!

Bush 'planted fake news stories on American TV'

Federal authorities are actively investigating dozens of American television stations for broadcasting items produced by the Bush administration and major corporations, and passing them off as normal news. Some of the fake news segments talked up success in the war in Iraq, or promoted the companies' products.

Investigators from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are seeking information about stations across the country after a report produced by a campaign group detailed the extraordinary extent of the use of such items.

The report, by the non-profit group Centre for Media and Democracy, found that over a 10-month period at least 77 television stations were making use of the faux news broadcasts, known as Video News Releases (VNRs). Not one told viewers who had produced the items.

is no "War on Terror."

There is, however, a "war" on the U. S. Constitution.

After September 11, 2001, we’ve learned that we can take a punch and move on. We’ve faced far worse threats to our national survival in our history - the Civil War, the War of 1812, World War II to name a few - but we never abandoned our Constitution. Until now.

Terror is an emotion. Emotions are part of human nature and cannot be eradicated. A "War on Terror" is therefore a war on humanity. The Bush administration has exploited the fear and shock of a nation in the wake of a surprising and dramatic act of violence to whip national fear and paranoia into a constant boil. Why?

The evidence suggests the whole point has been to seize power and steal money. We are witnessing a creeping coup in the United States, the overthrow of the idea, promulgated by our founders and by writers like Tom Paine, that the "Law is King:"

These repugs keep bad mouthing Bill Clinton about his lack of response to terrorism. I did note that one of the last time Iran pulled a terrorist act, Clinton apparently gave them and ultimatum of some kind that was immediately classified. He probably told them that if they pulled anymore terrorist acts they would be returned to the stone age.

One of the lead religious right groups, the Family Research Council, is attacking Mary Cheney by name

Alan Keyes used to attack Mary Cheney by name too. Then his own daughter told him, "Dad, we have to talk."

As my children got older, I would give them a little more freedom coupled with more responsibility. And I told them they go hand in hand. Freedom of speech comes with a responsibility. Those naughty children like Coconuts who scream 'PHUCK' inside Walmart have not learned that lesson, and think they are being cute and clever. This is what we have to overcome, these home-schooled entitled brats that never learned how to behave in public. Much like their leader Dumya, born on third base and thinks he kicked a field goal.

But WHO is going to bring them to justice? I do NOT understand the weak kneed Democrats claiming their inability to do anything about this criminal behavior! WHY not BAN together and just WALK the HELL OUT???? Chicken chits!

bawk, bawk, bawk!

Dawnie- I am really disappointed in the democrats in Congress. They should have walked out en-masse over every issue that violated the Constition and every issue that violated the middle class and the poor. Maybe they could have put a stop to this moronistration.

Repugs passed a anti-gay marriage amendment in secret behind closed doors, remember the one where Russ Fiengold and Alen Specter yelled at each other? The one where Alen Specter said he was against it but was going to vote yes for it anyway? Well that bill is just for "turning out the base" in the coming elections, because an amendment like that needs to be voted on in all fifty states. See, the republicans look upon "queer bashing" as the gift that "keeps on giving" and I'm sure they hope to use "immigrant bashing" in the same way too.

Here is part of the problem, the leader (dump Reid)!
"I'm not Goodie two shoes. I just feel these events are nothing I did wrong," Reid said.

Do these Senators and Reps get any training in what they cant and can do. Why would Reid think this it OK?

I forgot who it was but there was a great idea posted the other day. Why not make election day a National Holiday. We would probably get a lot more people out to vote.

They could require it to be a paid holiday.

The more I think about it the more I am convinced that we have to get the money out of politics. ALL ELECTIONS SHOULD BE PUBLICLY FUNDED, PERIOD. If it is handled correctly, no rich person or corporation could ever again buy a Congressman, Executive Office appointee or Judiciary appointee. It is just mind boggling that the Walmarts, oil companies, Ace Hardware, etc., etc., etc. donate huge sums (that they saved on their lower income taxes) of money expecting FAVORS that screw the American people. We are being screwed from the back and the front.

This has to stop.

Another example of a hate crime perpetrated on the American people by the chicken hawk, pseudo religious evangelical a**holes in Congress.

Anyone who votes for the gay amendment should be charge with a hate crime and prosecuted.

The Gay Republican: Oxymoron, or Just Moron?

Given that it's spring of an election year, one of the most beloved of all Republican rites is in full bloom: gay bashing. It's not enough that the state republican parties have specifically told gay men and women they are not welcome in the party, or that one by one, they are trying to amend state constitutions to prohibit gay marriage (which in most of these states is already banned by law); U.S. Senate Republicans have announced that they are planning, once more, to argue the need for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

This is a debate more urgent, they suggest, than the war in Iraq, immigration, education, or terrorism.

What's different this year is that it's not just the right-wing Republicans doing the bashing. The latest news is that the most gay-friendly of Republicans, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, is campaigning for arch-homophobes Senator Rick Santorum and Iowa's gubernatorial candidate Jim Nussle. In fact, the few non-right wing Republicans left in the party are all out on the campaign trail, avidly supporting the most extreme anti-gay rhetoric of their fellow party members.

So once more, in response to the new gay bashing, comes the old question: Why would any gay man or woman belong to a party that has stated, over and over, as clearly as can be, without equivocation, that he or she is not welcome?

Wow Lizzy...beautiful garden.

I posted at 7:23 about how, we, just regular people can be on cable. I am hoping that more dems realize that public access cable is one way to spread our messages.

Looks nice when finished, but a killer of a job.

This weekend we opened the pool, power washed the house, the outside tables, chairs, swings, benchs, etc. I painted a bunch of stuff, too. I hope to have a Lamont house party, so want to get things in order. I am headed to CA again to stay with my daughter in a couple weeks, so have to get it all done now.

Good evening, everyone.

momo, i liked it. of course at the end after realizing that christ was mortal and had left a family behind the lead characters decide not to tell anyone... and there was great footage of all sorts of wonderful european sites.

Posted by gregg on May 29, 2006 at 07:37 PM

gregg, I thought the albino priest was miscast. He didn't have pink eyes. And he had sort of a Peter Lorre demeanor.

I would have liked a more sinster characterization. Robert Novak is a real life Opus Dei member. I could see him in the part sneaking around and talking on the phone with the forces of evil.

Actually he's played the part in real life...regularly.

Did you figure out who Sophie was before the ending? I thought it was obvious in the book, but then you got a lot more background info about her upbringing.

I thought the background scenes about the early Catholic Church and Crusades were well done. You got a great feel for how political the Christian movement was in Europe....even before the Reformation.

PeppermintLizzy on May 29, 2006 at 09:01 PM

did you see this one, Lizzy? Howard Dean says he can not take sides in Any Primary:

http://www.myleftnutmeg.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=1362

And there is another race with a Progressive Dem going against an incumbent in CA:

The Winograd vs. Harman Dem house primary race on June 6 in CA is very much like our own Lamont vs. Lieberman primary race -
This link will tell you why; this race has all the same dynamics as our primary, except that Winograd cannot self-finance like Ned can -

134
PeppermintLizzy on May 29, 2006 at 09:04 PM

Pam,

Not surprising that Dean cannot endorse, but he certainly could meet up with the new candidates and find out what their issues are. Great quote over at My Left Nutmeg:

Those footsteps you hear aren't just of Ms. Winograd and Mr. Lamont. They are from the millions of us who are fed up and very much mean to take our party and country back.

135
PeppermintLizzy on May 29, 2006 at 09:10 PM

no, Lizzy, it is in full sun, but our sprinkler system went twice today.

I was thinking of doing a Pool and BBQ party for Ned as a fund raiser, but my husband thinks the liability would be too much.

136
PamB on May 29, 2006 at 09:11 PM

I think the fact that Jim Dean and DFA has come out and supports Ned, speaks volumes about what Dean REALLY feels about these Center moving Dems!

I was reading how the Republicans, when their Wealthy backers started to revamp the party 40 years ago, worked to purge all the moderate and liberal Repubs from the party. They executed a take over of all the local politics. This is now what we must do. Go back to our Core Values.

137
PamB on May 29, 2006 at 09:16 PM

Just do the House Party then, and invite whoever you want to jump in the pool afterwards. I will be the first.

My house party is on June 11th. And we are in the process of re-siding our house...there is no way it is going to be done, so the guests will just have to understand that it is a work in progress.
