Good morning, fair {{Dems}},
Tracy, we could easily add Biddy Dole to the list of folks who don't live where they're supposed to. True, Mrs Dole's mother lived in NC, but Biddy hasn't for years. Except for a bit of campaigning, she hasn't been seen in NC.
But then again, what would we expect from someone who got elected strictly as a right-wing rubber-stamper who, like the "good girl" she is, does as she's told by her handlers, signing whatever legislative idiocy appears before her. She no more represents NC than the man in the moon.
Where there's smoke, there's fire. Bet a few of our bloggers could find a lot more absentee Congressfolk who haven't been seen at their residences since election day.
Once they get to DC and taste that sweet money-trough they never come back... Time to send them home for good.
Wherever "home" might truly be...
I only know ONE person that has changed to Independent recently. That was my only reason because I thought JEN was saying what she said NOT knowing burnsey had changed. I said RUT ROH like she made an oopsie.

I can barely type myself and can only say you are not alone.
My D will change to I (aye Capt) stab me in the back ONCE, shame on you, twice? um NO there is no twice! You're dead.
I tried to love ya until I learned more about ya! Back to the Independant ranks of Michael Moore and Jon Stewart.
I know most of you will not care and the few who do are probably considering the change themselves.
Peace!

Gigi aka Dawnie, many of us have very long memories and before you go spouting off that you never stated you were leaving the Dems you might want to refresh you memory.
Also for a few other of your very choice posts, as you slam people and call them bigots you might want to remember a few rather nasty comments you made about the garbage that washes up on the lawns of those living in Florida.
Oh and before you get really pissy, catty is as catty does and honey you are as catty as they come.
They define a republic to be a government of laws, and not
of men."
-- John Adams (Novanglus No. 7, 6 March 1775)
Are you still a Republic if the laws are written as you go?
We have got rid of the fetish of the divine right of kings, and that slavery is of divine origin and authority. But the divine right of property has taken its place. The tendency plainly is towards ... “a government of the rich, by the rich, and for the rich.” : Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893), U.S. president
Credit ICH with some perspecatious abservations this morning.
If he walks like a conservative ...
Richard Viguerie, a prominent conservative activist, argued in a Washington Post article that the main cause of right-wing anger at Bush is that "he talked like a conservative to win our votes but never governed like a conservative."
You could have fooled most of the rest of us. Our take on it is just the opposite. Bush talked like a moderate who was "a uniter not a divider" and has governed for the few, not the many.
The Bush regime has killed tens of thousands of people in Iraq and Afghanistan, mainly women and children. The deaths are excused as unintended "collateral damage" of the ongoing war, but the deaths are nonetheless important to the tens of thousands of relatives and friends. An equally important casualty of the Bush regime is truth.
THE ADMINISTRATION THAT WON'T STOP LYING
~snip~
Freedom of expression still exists in America, but only on behalf of lies. Truth is forbidden, except on the Internet. The Internet is still free, because Americans are accustomed to believing what they hear on TV and read in the news columns of newspapers, whereas the Internet is new and iffy to most Americans and of less concern to the government. The mainstream media, which serve as a government propaganda organ, and the Internet are two parallel universes.
Like father, like son, to a point
Just because he's a Democrat, Jack said, "doesn't mean that I agree with everybody else on how you deal with something like Iraq. I don't agree with Dad on what he just said."
So what is Jack Carter's stance on Iraq? Where is Benji when we need him...I guess I'll have to go hunt for it myself. :)
Well, Senate Democrats did handsprings down the aisle to confirm Field Marshal Hayden as head of the CIA.
If the semantic gag of "Homeland Security" did not trigger fears of a coup d'etat, then certainly, I thought, the sight of a general in uniform as head of a civilian intelligence agency would.
Wrong!
Save for one or two legislators who still believe in the Constitution, this Congress is the most inept in history. They will be known one day as the "Failed Congress" of the early 21st Century. Count on it.
Thanks, Feinstein and Co. for helping Bush build his dictatorship.
Storm's a comin' and it ain't gonna be purty.
Now you can recess and go back to Main Street and brag on Memorial Day about how patriotic you are. (Pass the Pepto).
This Viet Nam vet says, "No, thanks! You've screwed up America enough!"
And yet I'm still a DEM no matter how angry I got.
And yet you're still hiding behind another name (potato) and still apparently a bigot.
I'll ignore YOU - and please feel free to get over yourself and ignore my posts ok?
"The Bush regime has killed tens of thousands of people in Iraq ... An equally important casualty of the Bush regime is truth."
morning Dawnie & everyone,
yep, yesterday kingbush and his lap pooch gave their iraqi pep (aka spin) talk. so what they didn't say was over 2000 of our finest are dead, thousands more maimed for life, countless iraqi civilians obliterated, billions of taxpayer dollars wasted or should we say given as spoils to kingbush's loyals...and what else did they not say? remember bullhorn guy doing the photo op on 911 rubble saying they'd get those responsible "dead or alive" aka osama. but maybe kingbush can convince the americans and his lap pooch ... maybe... maybe, just maybe...osama is in iran? any volunteers still out there to fight for kingbush and lap pooch?
Morning AM1
DPD really? I better turn on the tv in the background. Or did you read this somewhere?

Good Morning,
Just read a story about abstinence programs at schools. When verifying the statistic, it has been shown to be distorted. Why? ...because...
Young religious freaks are taught to lie about their sexual activities to make the data look good.
How do we know they are lying? They are lying because these people have become virgins for the second and third time after admitting they have had sex.
Two commandments broken and taught by fundamentalist christians, thou shall lie and thou shall covet!
Read about how to become a “Virgin” after having several children!
“Virginity Pledges Reveal Some Insights About Truth”, By Faye Flam, Knight Ridder Newspapers. Wednesday, May 24 2006.
Well someone please teach these religious freaks, "You are only a virgin once in your lifetime!".

Here is the video and transcript of Governor Dean on MSNBC. Chris Matthews just wants to talk about gossip and unimportant stuff, and he gets rather insulting in this interview.
They just spoke to one congressperson who was at the scene when the shooting happened. I hope they find whoever did this.
Retired General Wesley Clark Calls For Iraq Troop Withdrawal...

CNN reports that the Capital bldg is "locked" down....heard the sound of gunfire in garage of rayburn bldg.
Thought Clark had gone over to Faux News...is this to help the pug plan of backing out in "increments"?
The threat was "called in" to Capitol Police

(CNN) -- A human rights group said Friday that about 34 civilians were killed in a U.S. air attack Monday on the village of Azizi in southern Afghanistan, more than double the number previously cited by President Hamid Karzai.
"According to a witness who was wounded and is now in the Mirwais hospital in Kandahar, there were two separate groups of civilians killed in the village," said Engineer Abdul Qader Noorzai, director of the Kandahar office of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission said.

d.i.t.t.o. on the faux news job for my favorite General!
I'm still very proud of his speaking out against this criminal administrations misdealings. And his stands on other various issues.
Gawd, I received one of those insipid emails that waves the flag and stands on the bible. It states that those "pc people" won't let anyone say Merry Christmas anymore and that the illegal immigrants are demanding that we speak their language. It goes on to "send a message" to the immigrants that "this country was founded on Christian beliefs" and the "enlish language" and they better get used to it.
I responded to the sender by demonstrating shock that that the writer was so intolerant and praying for him to follow the message of Jesus Christ.
That should make their head spin around...
Posted by momoaizo on May 26, 2006 at 12:12 PM
No, a direct one. Even anonymous, possibly phony reports of gunfire in our nation's capitol should be followed up and approached with caution.
GOOD MORNING
Do you think they timed the press conference to detract attention from the ambulance?
Posted by momoaizo on May 26, 2006 at 12:10 PM
I wonder if the NSA will report where the phone call came from....... since they are apparently LISTENING and READING us all! No matter WHAT name we use!
LOL
(yawning) oh yea TGIF for real!
SOB! Just got home and caught up on news emails, and that Architect of Spying on us, Heyden got Confirmed! Also confirmed--- that Right wing judge bush is again pushing down our throats!
Anybody reading Crashing the Gate, knows the MAIN Republican strategy, is fill the courts with Right Wing ideologues, "to create a society that has been re-engineered to reflect conservative dogma" !
Look at the Democrats who sat there and voted in Heyden! F***king Lieberman of course!

Oh i agree Blue, all calls of shots fired should be investigated and approached with caution
caution being the key word here...could not understand why needed 100 police officers with cars, haven't counted how many ambulances and fire trucks i've seen so far for an anonymous call reporting they "think" they heard shots fired.
but the media needs something to report....maybe they were the anon caller?
i understand police work, hubby was in law enforcement for 13 years....to catch a shooter, you don't need all this hype....

sorry {{pammy}} it's a sad state of affairs no doubt!
I can't help but think there is so much more bubbling under the surface. Besides all the Anger and Ignorance!
Morning,
Been reading and watching all these news reports regarding Bush and Blair admission of error.
Bush thinks his biggest mistake was to talk up his, ”Cowboy ways; Wanted Dead or Alive!”
That’s an admission his political tactics was wrong, not an admission, “He lied to the country to get us into the war! He lied to the country regarding every decision he has made! He’s lied to the country”, and bush thinks his lies will all go away if he admits to error in political tactics and improperly placed propagandas.
We need to expose the difference between lying to the public to get us into war verse apologizing for using the wrong political tactics and propagandas.
Kavanaugh was confirmed on a vote of 57-36, warmly praised by Republicans but widely opposed by Democrats who said he is ill-suited to sit on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

In a statement, Bush said Kavanaugh will be "a brilliant, thoughtful and fair-minded judge."
The confirmation represented a victory for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a possible 2008 presidential candidate, whose efforts to fill more federal court seats with Bush's nominees have been bedeviled by Democratic objections. Five weeks ago he informed the Senate that he expected Kavanaugh to be confirmed by Memorial Day.
"I am committed to confirming additional judicial nominees to the bench who will practice judicial restraint and interpret the law strictly and impartially," Frist said Friday.
The vote marked the latest in a string of confirmations for conservative appeallate court nominees in the year since a centrist group of senators agreed on terms designed to prevent a meltdown over Bush's conservative picks.
Kavanaugh was not mentioned by name in an agreement announced by the so-called Gang of 14, but his nomination was pending at the time and he figured in the discussions. More recently, the seven Democrats who were members of the group had intervened in his case, calling for a second Judiciary Committee hearing into his appointment. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., chairman of the panel, agreed, defusing any threat of a filibuster designed to block a vote.

good luck with that since the TV news media still seems to be more RED than BLUE!
although I do agree - our parallel universes between TV and the NET may some day equal cross paths........ then WATCH out!! lol
Hybrid 12:28
I agree with you. You really have to watch closely to exactly what words this administration uses. I don't know if this is a Rove tactic or what, but I noticed it during the 2004 campaign when Cheney would talk about Bin Laden/al Queda and Saddam/Iraq. He would mix his statements up so they absolutely gave you the impression that the two were related. But if you reviewed his specific words, he left himself some REAL Narrow wiggle room so that it probably couldn't be argued in a courtroom.

GAWD Pammy I can't believe Byrd!!! He voted against a bill I watched yesterday as well that even a bunch of PUGS voted with alongside MOST dems.
Surprisingly that one even Landrieu and Lieb voted along Dem lines. It was for some immigration ammendment though so maybe that's why?
I don't get it. Unless his age is making him more senile than is apparent. dammmmmmmmmit! I used to really like that guy. Landrieu I've never cared for or Lieb of course.
Ben Nelson is a card carrying dino so it's expected with him!
Say,
I'm hearing all these references to Blackberries. Do you suppose the taxpayers paid for them? It sounds like they are standard equipment.
just musing
Only a few of the candidates have realized the power of the internet....guess most don't realize that we have the ability to check their voting records...to read THE WHOLE BILL OR AMENDMENT submitted....to get the truth out with links backing up our post.
my hope is that more people will realize these facts and that msm and written media is not the whole facts and nothing but the facts....
anyone hear that rupert murdoch is buying up newspapers in england? he probably wants to slant their news because too many people have caught on to the slant towards the pugs that americas media puts on the news...
Posted by hoipolloi on May 26, 2006 at 12:42 PM
i'd say that whomever invented this word is racist! shouldn't it be "a grayberry"?
aaaaa musing......
I admit to not reading MUCH history on Rupert.
With a name like that anyway (lol) I'm wondering if he is as PRO Blair as he is PRO W?
Since Blairs popularity is even worse than W's?
Hillary better take note that whomever Rupert LIKES ends up on the short end of the popularity stick! (Gen. Clark too I guess)
Good afternoon, everyone.
Clark has it right. It's all a matter of priorities.
Who the hell cares about immigration when we have an unnecarry war dragging us down. The cheap labor from down south of the border doesn't begin to challenge the human carnage we're stuck with in Iraq.
And outsourcing of good-paying American jobs is more important than cheap labor illegals coming into this country.
And giving work visas to foreign nationals, so they can come to this country and steal our technological edge is more important than cheap labor illegals jumping the border.
The Republican priorities are all wacked out. They all revolve around exploiting labor not building a financially-sound economic base for America.
What is more important to the incumbent Republicans? Meeting the needs of multinationals or their own citizens?
Time to get American priorities straight. The hell with phoney issues and doubletalk agendas. Let's put this country back on track as a superpower...not the slave of foreign governments and their Republican public servants.
"The Republican priorities are all wacked out."
Perfectly said Sandy! Hola! :-)
Set the Wayback Machine, Sherman! Why is Congress so eager to open up ANWR? Here's an iceberg tip poking up that floated by but didn't get out of sight:
Published on Thursday, October 14, 2004 by the Los Angeles TimesHalliburton's Interests Assisted by White House
The administration has lent support to a lucrative drilling technique. Some in the EPA consider it an environmental concern.by Tom Hamburger and Alan C. Miller
WASHINGTON — Over the last four years, the Bush administration and Vice President Dick Cheney's office have backed a series of measures favoring a drilling technique developed by Halliburton Co., Cheney's former employer. The technology, known as hydraulic fracturing, boosts gas and oil production and generates $1.5 billion a year for the company, about one-fifth of its energy-related revenue. In recent years, Halliburton and other oil and gas firms have been fighting efforts to regulate the procedure under a statute that protects drinking water supplies.
The 2001 national energy policy report, written under the direction of the vice president's office, cited the value of hydraulic fracturing but didn't mention concerns raised by staff members at the Environmental Protection Agency.
Since then, the administration has taken steps to keep the practice from being regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, which Halliburton has said would hurt its business and add needless costs and bureaucratic delays.
An EPA study concluded in June that there was no evidence that hydraulic fracturing posed a threat to drinking water. However, some EPA employees complained about the study internally before its completion, and others have strongly criticized it publicly since its release.
One of them, an environmental engineer and 30-year EPA veteran in Denver, last week sought whistle-blower protection in an 18-page statement sent to the agency's inspector general and members of Congress. The statement alleges that the study's findings were premature, may endanger public health and were approved by an industry-dominated review panel that included a current Halliburton employee.
"EPA produced a final report … that I believe is scientifically unsound and contrary to the purposes of the law," Weston Wilson wrote to lawmakers.
Now, how much of Congress is either holding or betting Halliburton stock? Just keep in mind that for everyone EXCEPT Congress, insider trading is a crime. Just askin'...
Has anyone found Hassert at the Rayburn Building yet? I hear he's armed and dangerous. Been gunning for any FBI agent he finds going through Congressional offices looking for documents and cash laying around from bribery sources.
Why am I not inspired that the Capitol Police are holding a press conference instead of out looking for the gunman...just like Rumsfeld is in Iraq instead of looking for Bin Lauden?
Doesn't the gunman know that Congress went on vacation for the next three months and there is nobody left on the Hill but maybe some illegal aliens cutting grass?

omg ROFLOL!!!!! I forgot all about Chainsaw!! ROFLOL!!
Hi Dawnie and Hoipolli,
Does this mean the pugs and bush administration will change their strategy of lies to better coordinate the propaganda for the benefit of republicans?
Was this the address of political tactical errors to pug audience only?
Again it had nothing to do with the reality of the world around this administration.
“The decider”, decided to apologize about the political tactics was in error! So, do we call him “The Apologizer?”
As “The Decider”, apologies for the error in Carl Roves political tactics!
Gee, makes me feel so much better he is taking responsibility for the poor judgment of his administrations political tactics and propaganda.
Posted by momoaizo on May 26, 2006 at 01:06 PM
momoaizo, why not let Clark become our "General" spokesperson and attack the Republicans on their priorities and their distorted Christian values.
We need to hit hard on our four major priorities...redeploying our troops, rapid creation of energy altenatives, universal health care, and career advancement for Americans. Who better than a general to lead the charge?
We do too much defensive explaining and not enough offensive attacks.
I think we have lacked a strong leader to advocate our agenda for the coming election. Clark may be just the right man for the job.

It would seem that I wasn't in fact the ONLY one you knew who claimed to be switching parties, It seems however, that I am the only one to follow through on what I say. It seems that you like to throw out empty threats as someone posted earlier today. You've claimed in the past that you were switching parties, but now we find you really aren't, so what part of what you say are we supposed to believe?
My reasons for switching to Independent have been well chronicled here over the past three years, and was a very difficult decission for me to make, you say it was because I felt cheated out of something, and I guess that wouldn't be so far fetched, as I think most GLBT folks have been cheated out of their equality by this party, just as they have from the republican party. But if my realization that I must make a stand based on what's best for me, and to show the democratic party that they can no longer take my vote for granted, seems to you as petty then there's nothing I can do about it. I have many valid reasons for switching Party affiliation, and as I said it was a difficult decision since I have been registerd dem since 1983 and have never voted outside the party line. I still don't have equal rights under the law, so after 23 years I thought maybe it would help the cause if I looked for an affiliation that might be willing to stand up and be counted on the issues that are important to me.
You claim I dissed you earlier because of something you said or some interaction with the trolls? Well that would be difficult since I haven't been posting on this blog very often for the last two months. So I question the veracity of your claim. Especially the claim that how you interact with trolls is only YOUR business, which would be true if it in fact did not affect everyone else on the blog. You make it everyone elses business by posting it here. And then you wonder why they keep comming back, and you keep telling them to go back where they come from.
You, like Marine, often claim that it is always the fault of the reader for not understanding how you meant something to come across on the blog. As I said to him, if people keep misunderstanding what you are trying to say, then at some point it really must be HOW you say it and not at all the fault of those who read it.
Also you said: I never asked for your opinion on ME. Yet a LOT of you seem to like to do that. Maybe it makes you feel superior or better about yourselves. Beats me
Well, there are a lot of people who you say things about, who have not asked for your opinion on them, so if you don't wish for someone to comment on you, maybe you should stop commenting on other people. Funny how you only see the slights you percieve against yourself, but if anyone doesn't like what you say about them then your response is too damn bad. You said that your comment about me wasn't intended to be a slam, and I guess I'll take you at your word. But if you don't wish me to reply to something you say, then don't bring me or my name up.
And just so everyone knows, that Snarky One above was NOT me.
Latest report by CNN states the police and investigators cannot find any evidence of gun shot, no residue, no shell casing, no bullet, no reality, …just a bunch of guys that scared themselves silly.
Satire take on what happened today!
GOP and bush administration will pass a comprehensive law prohibiting popping chewing gums in and around the capital.
RoboNerd, maybe we should send Cheney and his shotgun to Pakistan for a state visit to a few caves in the region?
Sandy,
Cheney missed the bird and shot someone friendly. We do not need Cheney shooting at our own solders instead of the enemy!
HybridFuel, panic attacks pretty much describe the Republican way of life. Worry about things that aren't real. Ignore problems that could be solved. And pray for divine intervention...and a good place bribe.

This should be a better political strategy than acting bold, "Wanted Dead or Alive?" BS.
The president does not have to apologize for being cautious in protecting the public!!!

To help end this fued between Burnsey and Dawnie (GiGiFondue I presume) I have changed ny handle.
Gosh, what would this blog be without all of us nuts screaming at each other?
Political Satire!
The president will issue Marshal Law around the capital and call in the national guard with Marines as back up. The entire capital will be on lock down. Anyone entering or leaving the capital will have a body cavity search by Roving Hands to ensure no wMd’s are hiding in cavity spaces. Again this is for your own protection and the GOP photo collection.

2 posts to you in two days is hardly an attack, and I was simply replying to the post you posted to me earlier when I wasn't here. Glass houses huh? Funny it's only glass houses when it's someone other than yourself. If you hadn't brought me up, in your little snarky aside yesterday I wouldn't have said a damn thing to you. So place the blame where it belongs, instead of trying to shift your mistakes onto others and claiming that they are attacking you. You'd be, and usually are, the first to challenge someone when you felt you were slighted. And yea, I can leave you alone, just as long as you leave me out of your posts. If you continue to post about me or against me I will continue to call you on it.
What did the pug divert attention from?

I was thinking JEN made a boo boo not knowing you had changed parties when she told someone else that people don't change parties cuz of something someone says....... the DNC may not be a particular person but it is because of what they ultimately DIDN'T say that made you so angry.
They didn't say or post or advertise what YOU wanted to hear or read or understand about YOUR particular issue! (I only know of ONE that gets you so angry) I don't blame you and I even said that earlier.
the PETTY comment was NOT to you but to the gaggle of harpies that love to start fights or enjoy watching them or what ever!!
I was (I thought) making allowance for YOUR changing parties. Even though I was still ticked at your including me with gregg and some other blogger for the way we respond to trolls.
again I don't think that is your business
NOW I am over this. I am sorry if you want to continue it on you should do so through email. I have not yet put your address on block. Hope I won't have to.
Peace

"The Bush regime has killed tens of thousands of people in Iraq ... An equally important casualty of the Bush regime is truth."
morning Dawnie & everyone,
yep, yesterday kingbush and his lap pooch gave their iraqi pep (aka spin) talk. so what they didn't say was over 2000 of our finest are dead, thousands more maimed for life, countless iraqi civilians obliterated, billions of taxpayer dollars wasted or should we say given as spoils to kingbush's loyals...and what else did they not say? remember bullhorn guy doing the photo op on 911 rubble saying they'd get those responsible "dead or alive" aka osama. but maybe kingbush can convince the americans and his lap pooch ... maybe... maybe, just maybe...osama is in iran? any volunteers still out there to fight for kingbush and lap pooch?

fine, then it seems we both stepped in it. Your clarification here is good enough for me.
Peace and have a good Memorial Day week-end.
America1st,
The solders are at such an alert state of looking for enemy combatant that they do not know who or where the enemy is coming from.
How do you deprogram these solders before they re-enter society?
I think the current process is to fly them back into town, tell them to return the gear and get off the base, "You are discharged!”

This Memorial Day weekend, some Congressmen returning to their districts should have to explain why $500 million was cut from benefits for the brave men and women who defend our country to make way for extended tax cuts for the wealthy.

The Enron Verdict
William Greider
May 26, 2006
National affairs correspondent William Greider has been a political journalist for more than thirty-five years. A former Rolling Stone and Washington Post editor, he is the author of the national bestsellers One World, Ready or Not, Secrets of the Temple, Who Will Tell The People and, most recently, The Soul of Capitalism.
Normally, I am a "bleeding heart" when it comes to long prison terms, but an appropriate sentence for the Enron boys might be six trillion years. Kenneth Lay with his million-dollar smile and Jeffrey Skilling with the cold, confident eyes of a viper made their company into the symbol and showpiece for a glorious era. It was the hyper-modern and market-efficient "new economy," in which the concept of wealth falling out of the sky became briefly hip and widely believed in respectable circles.
Enron led the way. Lay and Skilling showed us how it's done. And when Enron fell, the great national delusion turned to catastrophe. Unwitting investors lost $6 trillion overall. Millions of innocent bystanders lost much more in terms of their lives. So let Skilling and Lay now serve as symbol for the shame of modern American capitalism. Let these guys do the time for all those others, the corporate titans and financial con men, who got away.
Justice sometimes proceeds in strange ways. I am opposed to public hangings and other forms of scapegoating, but perhaps this time we need a spectacular ritual sacrifice to amplify the point made by that swift, sure conviction in Texas. These men in the good suits are criminals—criminals!—who must be made to set an example for all ambitious people who toil in business and finance.
These two thugs looted pension funds and destroyed the personal savings of families. They stole money from the rest of us, not to mention from government and other non-glamorous business enterprises. They rigged energy markets to drive up prices and bilk defenseless consumers (an old-fashioned swindle borrowed from nineteenth-century robber barons and newly decriminalized by deregulation). They swallowed viable, productive companies and wrecked them, especially wrecking the livelihoods of their employees. And, worst of all, they were best pals with politicians and political leaders as well as the most prestigious names in banking and finance—connections the Mafia would die for!

not all of them Bruno. My father came home and didn't speak of his time in Viet Nam for over 34 years...now he is reliving every day he spent there, from crashing in a helicopter to being blown out the back of his hootch (I think that is term he used) to having his bunk mate commit suicide in the bunk next to him. This was the final thing that had his CO tell him it was time he went home.
While he never spoke of it, our family definitely suffered because of what happened and the VA never was there to help him.
Unless you are missing body parts the VA/Gov't seems to consider you whole.

Now that Bush's buddies the Enron criminals have been found guilty, is there any hope of Pacific Gas & Electric customers and the State of California recovering any of the booty?
This deserves an answer even though it appeared on yesterday's thread. From what I have heard, unless forensic accounts are hired to track the money, there's no hope of reparation. You can't give back something you can't find. If they can find the money, then the picture might change.
I feel strongly that the forensic people should be hired and every effort should be made to recover the money; these criminals should not benefit from it in anyway. Imagine if Bush does grant them pardons in 2009 as he leaves office, as I've heard some suggest! Then they've successfully stolen millions, and all it cost them was a few years in some white-collar prison.
***
All true! I am finished venting my spleen on immigration. I get upset about the issue because:
1) You can't have a rational discussion. When you push back on the quantity of immigration, someone makes the claim that it is racist. That is just wrong. I faced similar diatribe when discussing outsourcing a couple of years ago. I know this is a tactic calculated to shut down discussion.
2) I don't think our party did a careful analysis of the economic impact of this bill. How could they as amendment after amendment was piled on? Before this goes to a vote in the House, a reputable group such as EPI or Center for American Progress must study this bill to make sure it's doesn't overbook the economy - we need to have some sense that our economy can handle the increases in immigration.
Yes, yes, yes I realize that if the economy falters, the immigration levels can be scaled back. But, by the time you realize you are in trouble as in 2001-2002, it's a bit too late and the duration of a jobs recession is aggravated.
That's all I have to say unless anyone has actual data to discuss on the economic impact of the immigration bill.
I admit that I am a bit of a "policy wonk" and like to see careful analysis before giving a bill my support.

I agree! It may be a matter of a class action lawsuit against the Enron crooks.

Did you notice in the bill that it specifically states that an econmic impact study needs to be done within 90 days (I believe) prior to establishing Visa quotas and it will have to be done prior to raising that quota going forward?

No, I missed that one. That is a good measure.
It is worthwhile for a group such as EPI to make a "guess-estimate" on the impact before it is voted on in the House.
I realize this is NOT a science. All we can do is make an estimate. We owe that much to American workers. We also owe them the protection of the labor laws. For far too long, our labor laws have been ignored. There should never be a case of a qualified American worker losing out to a H1B.

most likely I will pull the lever for the D, but can't rule out that I might just not vote for anyone in certain races if there is no support for my personal views. I shall only vote for those who support full equality and don't try to play the fence on the issue, like those who say it's a states issue. My equality should not be up for anyone's "vote". It shows a lack of moral leadership to say we don't support a federal ammendment, but hey the states can decide to deny people equal rights. Fully equal under the law is my goal and I will not rest until I am able to call my partner my Husband, and no, I don't want to move to Massachusetts. Why should I have to leave the place I want to live because someone else has issues? I should be allowed to live anywhere in the U.S. and marry the person of my choice. Remember this is next weeks argument for the Right Wingers, as the Federal Marriage Ammendment comes to a vote on 6-06-06. Bet you a dollar that Frist and The rest had a good laugh about the date they picked to bring it to a vote.
PEACE AND GONE FOR TODAY
Well, this is a bit of good news:
Thanks to your thousands of calls and letters, we took a major step forward this week in the fight for Internet freedom.
A bipartisan majority on the House Judiciary Committee yesterday passed the "Internet Freedom and Nondiscrimination Act" -- a good bill that would use antitrust law to protect Network Neutrality. Special thanks to those of you who called the key members who cast the deciding votes.
The question before us is simple: Will the Internet remain in the hands of users and innovators? Or will a handful of telephone and cable companies determine which Web sites you see and which you don't? Yesterday's vote -- a milestone for our movement -- would have been unthinkable just three weeks ago. But we've shown once again that organized people can defeat powerful corporations.
Our opponents spent untold millions on high-priced lobbyists, slick ad campaigns and fake grassroots groups. But the voices of hundreds of thousands of citizens -- your voices -- made the difference.
The SavetheInternet.com Coalition led by Free Press now boasts nearly 700 groups that span the political spectrum, including MoveOn.org, the Christian Coalition, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Gun Owners of America, Consumers Union, and the American Library Association. Thousands of blogs have taken up our cause. Yesterday, the coalition's petition drive surpassed 750,000 signatures.
Our top priority is increasing the number of people who know about this threat to Internet freedom.

An odd coalition but these are indeed odd times we live in! It's always good to see the people win a battle, now can we win the war ...
Here is an interesting thought, if USA Procecutors office were to take the events of Lay and Skilling selling shares of Enrons and immediately thereafter or within 90 days, they contribute huge funds to republican causes, assuming one can track bank account transactions, What will the pugs do with illegal money syphoned into their coffers?
The procecutors have proof the money was illegal, they manipulated the market and information to the public to sell worthless stocks and securities. They also lied to banks to get loans to purchase the stocks, which is a fraud. ...and we have good evidence loads of money was donated to the republican cause through the likes of delay and bush campaign.

Ok! You're not making fun of my real name. It was from an old Cheech & Chong movie.
As for your father. I understand why he doesn't talk about it. What could a person ever say that would make someone who wasn't there understand what soldiers endured when they answered the call.
I had a bad tendency to fight and bust up everything when I was angry. Which was frequently at the time.
Tell him you heard another old vet say,"it don't mean a thing."
Some more good news:
A federal appeals court ruled this week in two constitutional challenges filed by the ACLU to the Patriot Act's National Security Letter provision. The controversial "NSL" provision authorizes the FBI to demand a range of personal records without prior court approval, including records of Web site visits, e-mail addresses, and certain library records. The statute also "gags" anyone served with such a letter from revealing that the FBI sought or obtained information from them. The appeals court effectively lifted the gag that prevented Connecticut librarians who received a NSL from disclosing their identities. The gagged librarians will speak publicly about the case for the first time next week. In an ACLU press conference on Tuesday, May 30, they will talk about the gag order, the FBI records demand, and their firsthand experience of government treatment under the NSL provisions of the Patriot Act.
"Two separate lower courts found the Patriot Act's National Security Letter provision to be undemocratic and unconstitutional," said Jameel Jaffer, the ACLU attorney who argued the New York case before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. "We believe that recent amendments to the law make the provision worse, not better, and we are confident the district court will agree."
Concurring with this week's ruling in a separate opinion, Judge Richard Cardamone strongly criticized the government for continuing to argue that a permanent ban on speech, as previously authorized by the NSL provision, would be permissible under the First Amendment.
The latest ruling addressed two cases, the Connecticut case and another from New York, concerning an anonymous Internet Service Provider that challenged the NSL statute after an FBI records demand. Another judge struck down the statute in September 2004, saying that "democracy abhors undue secrecy." In that landmark ruling, Judge Victor Marrero held that the unlimited gag imposed by the NSL law violates free speech rights protected by the First Amendment.
For more information on National Security Letters, go to www.aclu.org/nsl
So the latest poop on that Capitol scare was that it was a jackhammer being used to repair an elevator shaft. (Until the next story is finalized.)
I would bet that Kenny Boy was alerting his buddies such as Bush and Cheney about the real state of Enron's business.

To clarify what i said in the last thread re seal the borders - I may not have phrased it properly, but i think the the premis remains sound. Before there can be any valid discussion about leniency towards those who's presence here is ILLEGAL (lets not forget that point), steps must be taken to stop a wave of those who would take advantage of such generosity.
I personally get very annoyed when people try to win (or stop) the discussion by playing the race card. It is a stale tactic, and IMO proves a racist attitude on the part of those who use it.
Stop the current wave of illegal activity, and then deal with those already guilty of the offence. A simple, logical, non-racist thought.
As for the H1B problem, it is true that it can corrupt the job market. It has in the past, and there is no reason to think the future will be different as long as the law has a bias towards business. Thinking outside the box, a possible solution would be a strong wage parity legislation, where no H1B could be hired for less than what an American-colleged professional would earn. In other words, make it so there is no monetary advantage to hiring an H1B outside of filling needed position that has a worker deficit.
It would be tough to manage, no doubt. Any such law would first have to examine the cost of education in the field of study, factor in a reasonable payback schedule for the debt incurred to gain said education, and arrive at a reasonable expected income.
Another area that needs attention is the bottom end worker scale. Too often i hear people argue, "if they wanted a better life they should have stayed in school and become a professional at something". This argument is bankrupt, since there are as many (if not more) white collar workers on the dole than laborers. why is this?
Simple. Laborers of the so-called "unskilled" variety are required for society to exist. without them, there would be no farm industry, no housing, no roads, etc. All such infrastructure is built with a strong back, not with a college degree.
As long as these trades are seen as "make work projects for the useless" rather than the foundation of our society, those who work them will be stuffed into the poverty region of the economic class scale. Labor has not had a raise (outside of minimum wage increases) since 1980.
The latest mantra from the chain gang bosses these days is something like "no one wants to work these days"... to which the slaves reply, "no one wants to pay these days".
Now i ask you... who wants to bust their ass all day for a wage that, after taxes, is within a couple bucks of what they get sitting on their couch on welfare?
I can think of a few million who would consider it a step up...
So you see, the illegal immigration issue is not something that can be fixed with ID cards and fences. Such things can only address a system that works, the current system in place obviously does not work so this legislation amounts to a bandaid on a 6 inch knife wound. It seems to stop the visible bleeding, but does absolutely nothing for the internal damage. and it is the internal damage that usually proves fatal.
(this still isn't phrased properly, sorry bout that... my skills as a wordsmith are somewhat lacking these days)
Randi Rhodes is talking this afternoon about the Presidential Powers that the President has extended to Negroponte which will allow Negroponte to exempt any company he wants from all FCC regulations.
Randi thinks that this is meant to shield all telecommunications companies that are now collaborators with the NSA from any liabilities and any responsibilities under the law.
I think that granting Negroponte presidential powers would be insanely damaging to what is left of this country as we know it. If that is the case as is being reported by Randi, it means that companies will know be able to buy immunity from wrongdoing. In other words, Enron and all the guilty parties would have been able to get away with all the fraud they perpetrated and would be untouchable by the Justice Department.
Thinking outside the box, a possible solution would be a strong wage parity legislation, where no H1B could be hired for less than what an American-colleged professional would earn. In other words, make it so there is no monetary advantage to hiring an H1B outside of filling needed position that has a worker deficit.
***
tune,
That's correct. Business should be respecting "prevailing wages" but they don't do. What they do is pay the H1B less money than other people in the industry. The H1B often does not stay in the country for the duration of the Visa. There are cases where companies bring in H1B to train them to replace an American worker. Being able to bring the person in on a visa makes training to take someone's job easier.
The latest mantra from the chain gang bosses these days is something like "no one wants to work these days"... to which the slaves reply, "no one wants to pay these days".

A draconian labor law from the beer-drinking canuks - this is in the province of Alberta, which has a debt of 0 and a spending deficit of 0.. in fact, they are currently arguing over the best ways to spend their surplus. (note, Alberta is also the only province with NO provincial sales tax).
No worker can be laid off or otherwise dismissed when such dismissal results in the position being filled by a lower-paid worker.
In other words, companies are not allowed to play the slave wage game.
This is an example of a success that should be looked into, in regards to how it helps the overall success of the province. On their list of abysmal failures, their base labor force takes a major beating in tax and minimum wage. And the industries, while recording big profits, complain constantly about the worker shortage.

We have a number of laws currently in place that don't get enforced; when a person is hired, hr is required to have them fill out 3 forms...fed w/holding paper - state w/h if applicable and I-9 which requires the employer to copy evidence of citizenship (with different options given, ss card and pic id like license or passport).
Quarterly, a report is sent in recaping the payroll deposits made and showing each individual, their ss # , and how much paid. so irs knows every 3 mos. if have legal employees, but if don't withhold taxes (as in paid under the table) then of course ss # not reported. problem is, immigrationa and nationalization people and/or irs rarely come to businesses and check people working against records.
so if paid under the table - can get away with not paying matching withholding taxes AND paying workers compensation insurance.
This can be fixed by giving the proper agencies the funding and the laws and enforcement capabilities needed to get a hand on this.
Gen. Michael Hayden won confirmation to be the 20th CIA director Friday in a lopsided Senate vote, placing a career Air Force officer in charge of the civilian spy agency that is grappling with intelligence reform at home as well as al-Qaida and other international threats.

People are disgusted with the Hostile Takeover by the Corporatists. Some have correctly identified their pain - mainly, people on the left. We never trusted the combination of wealth and power that is the essense of the GOP. We are not suspectible to the GOP misinformation machine. Our fellow Americans on the right, know they are hurting but allow themselves to misled by the Corporatist propagandists. They take their wrath out on the Dixie Chicks, "War on Christmas", and other nonsensical issues that the propagandists dream up.
Anyway, that's my pscho-analysis of the mixed up American electorate.
Republican Representative Jim Saxton speaking to Fox television, said he was in the elevator at the garage level of the Rayburn House Office building, when he heard what he thought was gunfire."I heard what I thought to be between six and ten shots," the Republican lawmaker said.
"It sounded exactly like gunfire to me. It was not of a backfire nature. it was the sharp crack as comes out of a weapon."
He continued: "I dove back into the elevator, rushed back to my office and asked my chief of staff to report what I had seen or heard to the Capitol Hill Police, which she did, and that started the chain of events that unfolded over the course of the day."
I know you guys probably have discussed this...but is Saxton living out his Starsky and Hutch days...and why is he so paranoid that people are shooting at him??
Hi, Pam.
I visited the new Lincoln Library and Museum yesterday. It was real eye opener. Back when Lincoln won the election there were red and blue states, too. The issue was slavery not immigration but there are too many similarities not to miss the point.
We have some real racism working here in this country today and also cheap labor issues. It's the same crap all over again.
I'm beginning to think America would have been better off if we had let the Confederacy go. It all boils down to some folks thinking they are better than others.
All that stuff in the Declaration of Independence about equality is lost on people who want to oppress others and want to make big bucks off the toil of others instead of doing their own labor.
The Republicans have multinationalized the issue.
Gotta run. Have a nice Memorial Weekend, all.
been thinking about a plan - it's really not new and sort of taken from the pug playbook. (they do it thru amway)
there are regulars here and on every other blog site...perhaps (this where the difficulty comes in....) each individual could start their own pyramid...
once a day, week, whatever, it could be decided the most important issue/s that we need to address our elected leaders about. then come up with the proper wording - links or whatever backup needed to reenforce the position we are taking ..... then virtually spread out and send an email to everyone in your address list. encourage them to join your effort....contact their congressman or senator - make it easy for them - give them a link or phone number) Yes i know moveon and other like organizations do this already, but we wouldn't ask for $$$ at the end of our message and it comes from someone they know and can reply to.
as everyone knows, all politics are local and the things that touch us personally are acted on with more passion.....
I know you guys probably have discussed this...but is Saxton living out his Starsky and Hutch days...and why is he so paranoid that people are shooting at him??

Hi Sandy, The Lincoln center sounds interesting.
Yeah, I too wonder why we fought so hard to keep these States part of the North.
My experience with why Racists have to hate and look down on another class(whether race, sex orientation, whatever) is because the only way they can feel good about themselves, is to tear others down . A person with a good self-image and self-pride, does not need to do this.
The Republicans have multinationalized the issue.
