50-State Strategy: California - Talking with Jerry McNerney

Posted by on June 23, 2006 at 10:42 AM

This week I sat down to chat with Jerry McNerney, the Democratic nominee for Congress from California's 11th District.

Tell me a bit about yourself.

I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then went to a Catholic military boarding school, and later earned a PhD in mathematics in college. From there I started working in the wind and renewable energy field. I worked in that field for 25 years.

How did you get the into wind energy field?

Well actually, I got into it by going to an interview in Port Arthur, Texas for an oil company, but when I got off the airplane you could feel the oil in the air. It seemed to me that they were exploiting the earth for profit, and so I headed back home. When I got home I got a call about working in labs to develop wind energy and that sounded liked a perfect fit.

What made you decide to run for Congress?

After September 11, 2001 my son joined the Air Force to defend our country. He is now a commissioned officer, and in 2004 he called me and said there was no one running in the Democratic primary in 11th Congressional District, and said 'I want you to do your duty like I did and run for Congress'. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to run for Congress because I felt a duty to my son and a duty to my country.

What do you see happening in the CA-11th?

I have a positive vision for the District; I want to create thousands of jobs by transforming our District into the "Silicon Valley" of renewable energy - by fostering bio-fuel, solar and wind energy opportunities. This has really resonated with people I have talked to. They are interested in these technologies, on ending our nation's dependency on foreign oil, as well as concerned about pollution and asthma rates which are on the rise and some of the highest in the nation.

What kind of concerns are you hearing about on the ground?

A large part of the district is very depressed economically and so there is a political and economic divide. Yet healthcare issues are important across the board. Last week I was at a meeting at SEIU with a number of retired seniors who have pensions of $200 and $300 a month, yet they have to pay over a thousand dollars each month in prescription drug costs. We have 45 million uninsured Americans in this country, and even those who are insured have to pay a high price for health care. Healthcare costs are hurting our families and our businesses and we need to address this. Another issue of concern is our education system. Education is the key to our prosperity, but California is one of the lowest states for per capita spending per student. Education is part of what made California so prosperous and we need to devote resources necessary so our children can compete and be successful in the future.

Do you think the voters are ready for a change?

Yes, Mr. Pombo's corruption is being recognized and understood for what it is by the people of the District. We have some of the worst roads in the state and the worst air quality. We have twice the state's unemployment rate. Mr. Pombo is the Chairman of the Resources Committee, yet he's brought home very little for his own constituents. People are starting to get that.

Moving into the General Election, what is your strategy for success?

Last Thursday I joined the two other Democratic Primary candidates for a unity breakfast and we will be working together in the future. We won the primary with a great campaign team, a good ground game, and outreach into the District, and we'll win in November the same way. The grassroots have been a very big help and an inspiration. I feel humbled by how dedicated my supporters are. If this is what it takes to move our country forward, this is what we are going to do. We are going to appeal to our grassroots and netroots supporters and make a change.

We are so proud of your work Jerry, you ROCK! It takes courage and vision to take on an entrenched incumbant even one as corrupt and wicked as Richard Pombo. I've been sending your campaign donations all along, a little here and there - as I can afford to. I encourage all other Dems in California to do the same. Actually everyone in the nation would do well to help you kick Pombo out of office. That man is determined to destroy the Endangered Species Act! He's got to go!

Tracy, Thanks for the interview with Jerry McNerney. Now you need to sit down with David Roth, the democratic candidate for the 45th Congressional District in California. David is attempting to unseat Republican Mary Bono. Rep. Bono has become a "Bushie" and is well financed. In my humble opinion, David Roth is one of the most exciting candidates to come along in a long time. He could use some help from the DNC. Thanks,

Dear Friends,

I will try to keep this short and sweet on what I think all Democratic Candidates should do and keep doing, that is if you want to win back congress this year. I think I made it fairly easy from the start even though the upper part of this letter is seven pages long. The one single issue I see bringing down the whole Party is the Illegal immigration issue, note it is Illegal Immigration, not lawful immigration. There is the plus side, the fact the bush/cheney regime have done nothing or as close to nothing as possible and still collect a pay check. (sounds exactly like what the bobble heads in congress have done, or not done more like it) The bush/cheney regime have absolutely refused to fully fund the border patrol, fund the 9-11 commission recommendations, totally given in to big business and not pursued any work place enforcement. Hell, they will not even enforce the currant border laws. The very same problem that came up in the 9-11 attacks was the visa holder over staying their visa’s and no one tried to contact them and warned them at the very least. I would think, and hope currant Democratic Congressmen&women are helping the New Democratic candidates with info on the horrible record of the bush/cheney regime on enforcement of border laws and security, and also port security. We already know the bush/cheney regime tried to sell several of our larger port operations. Now they are in the process of selling the control of American Controlled Air Line Companies. Yes, according to Lou Dobbs, and he is hardly ever wrong about things like this.

If the Democratic Party can not see the Danger in supporting Illegal Aliens, I hold No Hope for the Party to win any seat in November. I have tried to explain to you all several ways, if you can not win, and take control of at least one house of Congress, then the war is lost and we should just hang it up because then Satan Wins!!! To do anyone any good whatsoever, you must first win, and as people much smarter than me have said, people usually vote against something as opposed to voting for something. So I am begging the Party leaders, please, PLEASE support the border security first proposal, and say we will have to study what to do with the remainder of the illegal’s. It is an extremely complex issue and it needs careful consideration. Not a ruse to put out a bill that may not be what the country needs, and we do not want to displace any American worker who wants to fill the jobs. Tell the American people we are not like the bush/cheney regime we know there are Americans who will do some of the jobs he wants to give to the lowest paid workers in the country. Stand up for the American workers. And Jesus please remember, most of those people you saw out protesting with Mexican flags are illegal’s and can NOT VOTE!!!!

I know we are the Party of civil rights and a protector of all peoples basic human rights, something the bush/cheney regime has abandoned for our country without the concent of the majority of the American people. They have come out with the torture memos, rendition and only God knows what else we do not know about yet. Just the appearance of the torture memos have hurt us around the world in ways we may not comprehend yet. The thought of Americans torturing Arabs is enough to recruit terrorists in all countries, including ours. Wasn’t there an incident on a college campus where an Arab American ran down some students to protest the torture of Arab’s at Getmo? I would like to have known where bush’s brain was on that call.

Something that has always seemed hard for the Democratic Party to do is attack, attack, attack the opponent. Always Attack, and stay on the offence, do not let up even for a minute. Yes, we may turn a few people off, but very few and it will show people once and for all we are tough. The Democratic Party is tied to the left a little or maybe way to much on issues like that. People think Dems, and they are labeled liberals which is fair. However when people think of liberals they think geek, book worm, I hate to say it, but, like a pussy or chicken maybe a better word. We need to get people to realize we are not all chickens and will fight, and fight to the death if need be. However, if need be we are going to fight smart, and not try and do it cheaply, like a current president we know.

In every venue we need to attack the bush/cheney, and their hear no evil, see no evil, and speak no evil bobble heads in congress. A huge issue to attack them on and no one seems to be willing to get it past their lips and for the life of me I can not figure out why, is how we got into this God awful war in Iraq in the first place. There has been absolutely no real investigation into the question of why people were pressured into giving only evidence that looked one way. Why was there no one standing up screaming this is a mistake, and if they were kept out of those meetings why, by whom, and when were they. This issue is a major winning topic for us in the upcoming elections. I am telling you, this issue is a winner all the way around, except for the republicans, and even they should say thank you and just may do that in the years to come. Remember Candidates, you are doing this for us, the American People, every color, every religion, all of us. We need to know what happened on this issue!!! WATCH THE PBS SHOW FRONTLINE, “THE DARK SIDE” ISSUE It should give all candidates and Democratic strategists a lot of ammunition to fire off. I will close this with an idea, how do we know that the bush/cheney/rumsfeld war plan is not going exactly the way it was always intended to go. Keeping us tied down in Iraq until bush’s re-election, and now until the end of his last term. You tie in cheney’s halliburton connections, and the fact they have never had enough troops, would not raise the troop levels, and still wont do that. The simple fact is, the longer we are in Iraq, the longer halliburton will make Billions...... It is no wonder that bush would not get rid of rumsfeld sense he presumably would know of this extended war plan. I mean it all ties together, I can not help but think it is a definite possibly. Bush even let it slip that next president will have to worry about Iraq. That is not fair to any presidential candidate, it is definitely not fair to the county.

Remember Always, you are doing this for us, if we/you do not get into office, you can not do anyone any good. Get your butts out of the office and start walking the streets, if not you get staff or volunteers to do it, talk to the people. All Government power is suppose to come from the people, and somehow the bush/cheney regime and their bobble heads have it all backwards. It is not good enough to bring up how we got into the war, you candidates MUST, absolutely a MUST ask the question rhetorically why did we really go to war???????? There are many theories out there, know them all. All my police officer training and the many many years I spent doing it gave me certain insights into people. No one would push as hard as they did for a WAR unless it was something personal. It should be obvious to anyone, bush wanted, and still wants saddam dead! Bush has said on numerous occasions that saddam tried to have his father killed. A major motive for trying to have him killed, I think it blinded him to anything else. He often spoke of saddam in the past tenths as if he were already dead. He has said many times the world WILL be a better place without saddam, and the world is a better world with saddam on trial for his life. Something that would not have happened without bush and cheney’s lies and their unrelenting all out push for the Iraq war. The halliburton/KBR cheney tie has to be investigated. They have gotten away with murder in over charging the Army in Iraq. And what happens, the Army is ordered to shut up and pay the bill. Never the less, cheney’s ties to halliburton and all their Waist, Fraud, and Abuse must be talked about in the elections. We must make all of America hear what most who will be reading this know what has gone on in Iraq. For what ever reason the Democrats seem to be to frightened to bring up allegations agaist the VP and his company. The America people deserve to know, the No Bid Contracts, cheney’s continued financial ties to halliburton even though he has said there isn’t any, he is lying again!!! Who is all the top management for halliburton in Iraq? Retired Generals who are war supporting republicans and are now making Millions! This is true, check it out, there is a ton of this the PBS show Frontline has already covered, and reported on. No one seems to be paying attention.

I know it is not a Presidential election, but believe me, people care about this issue, not just us Democrats. There are still a lot of republicans out there who for what ever reason are still republican, unlike me who has switched for life, but they are dying to punish bush for his lies. Bring it up all the time is only going to hurt bush, and make YOU look Strong and not afraid of a dam thing!!! Remember, how we got there, and why did we go? These are questions the American people want to know, and they sure as hell deserve to know, they are paying halliburton’s great great great great grand kids their millions. And it will be yours, ours, and my great great great great grand kids who will be paying for this war.

You know that brings up another great issue, War Profiteering, it should be outlawed. I hope no one has to tell any candidate the immense cost of this war, and outrageous Waist, Fraud, and Abuse of the tax payers money. Halliburton, and KBR must be investigated. The ties to cheney and his family must be brought to light. The old cop and detective in me screams Motive for the rush to war, and No One, absolutely No One pushed harder, or longer for this war than cheney.

Since we want to win in both houses of Congress, you had better bring up all the lack of oversite this lousy, lazy, corrupt, no good for nothing congress has been absolutely absent on every issue they are suppose to be doing. They call coming in to work three days a week, 200 days a year, cutting taxes in a time of war, allowing thee worse war profiteering, contract favoritism with these,No Bid BILLION dollar contrac almost all of them going to halliburton, no investigations into these issues, no oversite, asleep at the switch while the republicans rob your kids piggy bank, and future, cutting education at a time when we need more education, unethical business everyplace and no words from the white house or the republicans in condemning the business actions. Very little investigations and criminal charges at all in these cases. The war on the middle class is killing people, they have to work twice as hard for less than they got ten years ago. however, if you are a rich fat cat republican who is willing to support the war, hell bush will give you our kids piggy banks, and sell out your social security. I am telling you the country is going to hell in a hurry.

Now we come to the highest deficit in history. This president, VP and their bobble heads in congress has out spent every past president combined, all 42 of them over the past 225 plus years. They have out spent all the the past Administrations in only 5 years. They took the largest surplus ever and in less than, hear me, less than four years turned it into a deficit so large they had to raise the nations allowable debt limit. They have had to raise that debt level three more times since then, and are projected to do it again next year. It has been estimated by the time (we pray) bush’s war is over it will have cost the American tax payer, One Trillion Dollars!!! Was it worth it? In the cost of our most precious asset, our kids lives, All the Blood, in the lost limbs, wounded, and what ever mental damage it has done. At this point, I do not think it was worth it to give One Iraqi their freedom, but that is my personal view. It is also my view, and a correct one I think that if a people want freedom, they are the ones who must earn it, fight for it, to learn how very precious it really is. They must learn just How Much Freedom Cost, by no means is it cheep. From my study of history which I will admit is limited, but I hardly think it was our founding fathers wishes that we go globe trotting trying, or even in cases like Iraq and Afghanistan FORCE so called Freedom upon people who have shown very little wish to fight and die for it. The founding fathers knew we were embarking on an experiment in social and governmental engineering. Hell, this country is still only 227 years old, or there about’s, who in Gods name says we have some special insight into what is good for the rest of the world? I will tell you who thinks they have that special insight, the republicans, and they want to FORCE their values, not only on you and I, but it seems thee whole world.

I will end with this, as far as getting elected to congress. Our best bet is to stay way the hell away from the Illegal immigration issue. However, if forced to talk about it support the enforcement only right now, hell even the illegal already here want the flow to be cut off. It is just more competition for them. And Please REMEMBER they Can Not Vote, Americans can and will on this issue. Tell the people it is a very complex issue, which it is, and it will take time to study what needs to be done with whom ever is left to meet the needs of the Nation, and the immigrants themselves. We can talk about a possible path to citizenship later on. I am telling you, even the people like the Democrat who lost out in California can make a hell of a run for that seat, if, and only if, she changes her views on this issue telling folfs you are more in-tune with what the voters in the area want. What she can offer that they cant, and have refused to do and will continue to refuse to do is accountability on the executive ie bush/cheney. Don’t forget to always, Always use bush/cheney administration or regime and toss in rumsfeld if possible because they are less liked than bush. This issue should be thee only weak spot in our armor.

Ok, I am really ending with this, it all boils down to one simple issue that is an absolute guarantee, the republicans will Not Under any circumstances hold bush/cheney, or rumsfeld accountable for anything. It is an absolute guarantee we Democrats Will hold this administration accountable for their actions and their inactions. The uncontrollable spending will end if we are put in, and the Waist Fraud and Abuse of the no bid contract will be at an end. As I have said on many occasions, I do not judge this administration and their bobble heads as true republicans, they are a bunch of undisciplined renegade hoodlums who need to be sat down and made to follow the law, not make it up as they go along. Deciding which laws they will follow and which ones they wont. When you have that candidate debate, make sure you end with something like this.

Now go out there and Kick some republican ass, and do Not take names or prisoners, they would not do it for you. If you do not get into office we can not help anyone, and as sad as it is to say, the Democrats, US are our only chance to get answers about this out of control administration. Now go out there and get the Government back into the hands of the people where it belongs. Get it out of the hands of big business and powerful lobbies. The Government is suppose to belong to the people, not to the rich powerful and famous people, or especially politicians. I have given until it has hurt, and I truly mean Hurt. Would you please join me in giving one more time, so hopefully we can buy back our Government. My best Hopes, Wishes, Dreams, and Prayers go with all you new candidates, and the incumbent candidates. We the people are behind you!!!!
Oh, and please remember one more thing, if you are not doing the peoples will, you are a dirty, no good worthless, stinking politician and this Party will have no more use for you, clear?

Sincerely,
DW McKinney
Mesa, Arizona

PS: I ask one big huge favor of the democratic candidates besides the getting out and meeting of people, staying away from Washington DC and the what ever that keeps politicians from understanding the views, wishes, and desires of the people. Please, read some of the emails, and articles, on the Daily Kos, and more important I think, the Democratic website Blog. All I am saying is keep grounded.

PSS: I ask that all of you please send your views to your democratic candidates, State incumbents, and Incumbent Candidates. Please feel free to use this letter, any part of this letter, or add to it and take the parts you do not agree with out. It is very important we make our views known, and then support our candidates. I hate to say it, but we must all give until it hurts because we are up against all those multi millionaires who got $50,000.00 tax breaks this year alone. God only knows what other subsidies bush/cheney and the bobble heads have given their business’s. They will also give until it hurts because they will do anything to buy their government. Please forgive all my mistakes, I proof read it, but fast and do not have a lot of time. Believe it or not, it takes hours to send this to all the Senators, Congressmen&women and Party headquarters I send it to. If you managed to read this all the way through, I wish I was there to shake your hand, Good Job!!!!
