On the Hill

We expect the Senate to vote on the Iraq resolution today.
From the Washington Post, the Republicans are planning hearings on immigration.
House GOP leaders yesterday announced a series of field hearings during the August recess, pushing off final negotiations on a bill until fall at the earliest.
The announcement was the clearest sign yet that House Republicans have largely given up on passing a broad rewrite of the nation's immigration laws this year. They believe that their get-tough approach -- including building a wall along the border with Mexico and deporting millions of illegal immigrants -- is far more popular with voters than the approach backed by Bush and the Senate, which would create a guest-worker program and allow many illegal immigrants to apply for U.S. citizenship.
Republicans are trying to kill the minimum wage bill now being debated. From the Boston Globe:
Democrats are proposing to raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, but Senate Republicans are using a legislative tactic that will force the measure to get 60 votes to pass. In its place, Republicans are offering an increase to $6.25, but say they will pair it with reductions in overtime pay and tax cuts for businesses-- a move that appears likely to arouse enough Democratic opposition to kill all attempts to raise the minimum wage this year.
The parliamentary plays are the latest in the partisan game of tit for tat that has long stymied efforts to raise the federal minimum wage. Senate Republican leaders initially sought to sink the minimum-wage increase by linking it to an unrelated measure that would make it a crime to transport a minor across state lines to get an abortion -- a move designed to rob the bill of crucial Democratic support.
The House will likely vote today or tomorrow on first reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act since it was signed into law in 1965.
UPDATE: The vote will not take place as planned. From the Associated Press:
The four-decade-old law enfranchised millions of black voters by ending poll taxes and literacy tests during the height of the civil rights struggle. A vote on renewing it for another 25 years had been scheduled for Wednesday, with both Republican and Democratic leaders behind it.
The dramatic shift came after a private caucus meeting earlier Wednesday in which several Republicans also balked at extending provisions in the law that require ballots to be printed in more than one language in neighborhoods where there are large numbers of immigrants, said several participants.
It is unclear whether the historic Voting Rights Act will come up for a vote this year.

And all they can to make sure those hiring illegal aliens are not prosecuted.

Why aren't Senate and House raises paired with minimum wage increases? (Let's make a law about that!) By voting against raising the minimum wage, it shows a clear case of discrimination against the rank and file. Ummm. Sounds political. The House and the Senate didn't object when their pay raises were voted in ... oh, wait. I forgot. They voted in their own pay raises!!!! Man. I want a job like these dudes have!!!! The only down side is that they are giving the "term" Republican a bad name. (Or, rather, a worse name.) In fact, when is the last time anyone bragged about being a Republican? It is definitely turning into a bad word. Their time is coming to an end and they know it. You can tell by the way they are working furiously to grab all the loot they can in the short time left to them. It sure is going to be sweet when the tables get turned on them. If they weren't such fools, turning the tables could be painful. But, being the fools they are, and Godless, it should be something to look forward to.
Raise minimum wage, I would say $15.00 per hour. Better take $7.10 while you can.
I think that the Democratic strategy on this would be,"these acts deserve an up or down vote!"Everthing with the repubs is always about how they can manipulate it.Bite them with their own slogans!
The problem with forcing anyone to present documents is that everyone will have to present them so the undocumented can be segregated from the documented. And then, of course, there's the brisk trade in fake documents.
Another matter worth considering is that many juveniles who've been taken into forster care because of parental neglect are likely to be undocumented because their parents just don't care.
These children already suffer because their school and health records are incomplete. Complicating their disrupted lives by demanding that they keep track of records they don't have seems doubly unfair.
If an oath is sufficient in a court of law, it should be sufficient to get a job.
WEALTHY vs the rest of us...
(cnn) "A new analysis finds chief executives of large companies made 262 times the average worker's annual pay in 2005."
let me do the simple math. what takes us 262 days of hard work, takes them only one day of telling us how much harder to work to remain employed under them?
I hope the dumb genes that seem to be inherited by every Democratic leader start to lose their efficacy before the upcoming elections.
Their stupid support and backing of illegal aliens and the immigration bill coming out of the Senate will lose them any support they may have garnered from middle of the road Americans.
While the Republican leaders appear to have been able to pass the corruption/greed gene down through the generations successfully, I'm in awe of how Democrat leaders have managed to pass down the gene for stupidity.
They must stop spending so much time together, the inbreeding is killing us.
This issue of minimum wage is one of the biggest dividing line between Democrats and Republicant's. In my opinion, its one of the most important political issues of this year. I like Hillary C's idea of tying the minimum wage to the salary of the congress. When I first heard about it I thought it was the smartest idea I've heard in the congress all year! I hope she gets her bill through.
P.S. GO CLAIRE McCASKILL!
Republicans are pathetic. In one breath, they try to say that they are the party of the people and in the next, they do things like complaining about measures that protect certain minorities in the Voting Rights Bill. Let's see them get any minority votes in this election. Like that'll happen.
Raising the minimum wage helps only those up for election. What is insulting is that for some reason the Democratic party thinks 7.25 is enough. Why not $30/hour! Let's make it worth working. If everyone got paid that then there would no longer be welfare. People would get off their couches, have a productive life, avoid trouble, contribute positively to society and....just a minute....they just may turn into Republicans. Since Democrates rely on the poor, those on welfare and criminals to get re-elected, I understand why they only want to raise the minimum wage to 7.25. Smart move Democrates.

When Ronald Reagan "cut and run" from U.S. involvement in Lebanon in 1983, there was no Republican outrage over it. In fact, the Republicans demanded the action! (Democratic leaders: It is so easy to use history against almost all of the Republican issues and statements!!!!!)
To curb Social Security fraud, issue everyone a PIN number to go with their Social Security number, such as is issued with credit cards. The current climate demands this kind of approach.
Hasn't anyone noticed that Republicans say one thing and then do the exact opposite!!!
The immigration issue? Send the bills for supporting illegal immigrants to the countries where they came from.
It's a hoot, isn't it, that Bush and his cronies say they want Iraq to be self-governing and to start re-building their nation -- this, a directive from a governing body who can't govern itself?
Let's think about this: if the best thing that can be said about this administration is that nothing bad happened today ---------- then things are really, really, really bad.
Jon Stewart for Presidednt!
Let's start enforcing the laws of the land people! For some reason the Democratic Party is forgetting what the word LEGAL means.
We can talk all we want about immigration reform, but unless we enforce our immigration laws, what difference does it make? Granting amnesty to millions of illegal aliens will only encourage more to come over. What happens then? We are showing no will to enforce our laws, so in another 10 or 20 years, we’ll have to go through this whole thing again. By then, how much more of our tax money will be going to subsidize health care, education, and other services for illegal aliens?
We have a huge problem in the border States as well as others including Florida where I live. Every official just sits around wringing their hands, doing nothing with hopes that some fairy godmother will come down and solve the problem.
Let's enforce the law. Please.
Enforcing the laws of the land is a good start. Let's start at the top and work down.
Bush, because of his lying to the people to start an illegal war causing multiple homicides, his negligent homicide not giving a rat's butt during Katrina, his flagrantly illegal spying on the American people and his disrespect for the Constitution of the United States. That's a start, then there's his ties to Abranoff...Hmmmm.
Cheny has a lot to answer for too, including his complicency in the War of Lies, and his ties to Halliburton and their sweetheart no-bid contracts for just about everything going on in Iraq. Same for Rumsfeld.
Then there's Congress, both the House and the Senate, Abramoff's just the lobbyist who got caught, we need to look at the dealings and the sweetheart deals. There's a lot of under-the-table crap going on that needs to be checked out.
Impeachment works well on legislators as well as administration officials.
Yeah!!! Enforcing the laws of the land is a Great Idea!!!!! Yeah!!!!
