Bush Accountable For Failures in Iraq

June 23, 2006

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement on Democratic efforts to hold the Bush Administration accountable for its failure to provide a strategy for success in Iraq and the need to provide real benchmarks for success so that Iraqis can take control of their own security:

"President Bush's permanent commitment to a failed strategy in Iraq not only isn't working, its irresponsible. Republicans in Washington have failed to hold President Bush accountable, with deadly consequences. Democrats remain united and will not allow President Bush to leave the problems in Iraq to the next Administration. We believe that it's time for a new direction in Iraq and a plan for success that is both tough and smart. We will hold President Bush accountable and ensure that 2006 is a year of significant transition so that our troops can come home and eventually be redeployed to other parts of the world to fight and win the war on terror. Democrats remain committed to tracking down and killing terrorists who want to hurt Americans and we will continue to stand with our troops as they bravely serve our country, we won't just stand for photo-ops in Baghdad."
