Democracy Bonds: DC

Posted by on June 14, 2006 at 12:10 PM

Last night I left the office a bit earlier than usual to attend an event for Washington, D.C. area Democracy Bond holders. Held just a few blocks from the White House, this wasn't your typical D.C. fundraising event with someone collecting thousand dollar checks at the door.

This was an event for the grandfather who contributes $20 a month, the student who decided to skip a few trips to Starbucks and donate $15 dollars each month, or the mom who donates $30 every month because she wants a better future for her children . Each person has a different reason for purchasing their Democracy Bond, - but we also all have something in common - a committment to change America.

Governor Dean spoke to the crowd for about 15 minutes about the 50-State Strategy and the Democracy Bonds program. He closed his remarks by saying:

It isn't the Democratic party you're supporting when you buy Democracy Bonds, it's America, and our vision of America. The Democratic Party is important, but I didn't take this job because I love the Democratic Party, I took this job because I love America and I want it back.

New Yorkers - Come Out To Support Sherrod!
Sherrod Brown is a progressive Dem running for Senate in Ohio against conservative Republican Mike DeWine. See http://www.sherrodbrown.com/

Sherrod says it like it is, and he's gaining a big following in this all-important swing state. But he needs campaign money to keep the momentum going, and so the Democratic Senate '06 Committee in New York City is throwing a fundraiser for him next week. It will mostly be young professionals and students and should be a lot of fun - Sherrod is a great speaker. Details below. Thanks! Sacha

Congressman Sherrod Brown is running against Mike DeWine, one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents running this year. DeWine is down in the polls, but well ahead in fundraising, so it is critical that Sherrod get the finances he needs to gain victory for the Democrats in Ohio. Democratic Senate '06 is a network of professionals dedicated to returning a Democratic majority to the United States Senate in 2006. This event for Sherrod Brown will be the second of a series of happy-hour events the group will host for Democratic Senate candidates in key swing races around the country that will determine control of Congress. Check out our website: http://www.ds06.org

At our first event we raised nearly $12,000 for Claire McCaskill who has arch-conservative Jim Talent on the ropes in Missouri. With your help we can surpass the incredible success of our first event and help bring Ohio back into the Democratic fold! Your involvement is critical. Together we can have a significant impact.

Please forward this to anyone you know who might be interested in attending the event or joining the host committee. We look forward to seeing you on the 19th!
Yours,

The Democratic Senate '06 Committee

Federal law requires us to use our best efforts to collect and report the name, mailing address, occupation, and name of employer for individuals whose contributions exceed $200 in an election cycle.

Contributions to Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate are not deductible for federal income tax purposes.

I find this post extremely curious, and for the record I supported Howard Dean in his bid for the presidency. However, a statement like the following becomes an oxymoron:

It isn't the Democratic party you're supporting when you buy Democracy Bonds, it's America, and our vision of America.

And why is it an oxymoron, because on the main page of the Democracy Bonds it is written:

* Reform the political process by building a political party beholden only to the people, not the special interests
* Build the Democratic Party from the ground up in every precinct so that we can compete everywhere
* Win elections in every state and territory of the United States, at every level of office

May I ask what happened in California's CD-50? We did not win the election.

The Democratic Party is asking for folks to buy these bonds to build the party.

When has the Democratic Party helped the communities that are working so hard to get candidates elected to the House or the State Senate?

When has the Democratic Party even recognized the candidates running in New York for the House?

We have no unification by the our leaders in both the House and the Senate, so I ask just where is this building going to take place?

If these bonds were for America than I ask how will these bonds help the interest of the people, right now. What communities are you going to help with the money from these bonds.

Good Point Lizzy,

Also, who has oversight on these Democracy Bonds? Who determines how they will be spent? Where can one go to find an itemized list of "exenditures"?

Thanks anyway, but I'll support my local candidates only, for this election, that way I know my money won't go to supporting Republi-lites and Republi-lite issues.
There are too many Republi-lites directing campaigns at the national level, including some who have stabbed the real Democrats in the back, not just once but many times. Until these people are fired from those positions, I'm not sending money to the national party.

And this is why the bloggers are here Butte and if we get back congress,we'll make sure the people from the DLC are fired and gone for good.

Good luck by supporting your local candidates and if you have a chance, purchase a democracy bond where we'll end this nightmare republican leadership once and for all.
