President Bush Needs To Stand Up With A Plan For Iraq
June 28, 2006Today in St. Louis, President Bush will meet with American soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Instead of offering his usual empty rhetoric, it is time for the President to provide these brave soldiers and the American people with a plan for success in Iraq that offers benchmarks for success so we can determine progress on the ground and begin to redeploy our troops. Democrats have a plan to make 2006 a year of significant transition in Iraq, where the Iraqi people begin to take over responsibility for their own defense.
"Why is it that President Bush doesn't understand why he needs to have a clear plan for Iraq? Stay the course is not a plan, saying that he will leave Iraq for the next President is not a plan," said Democratic National Committee Press Secretary Stacie Paxton. "Our troops deserve better. We need a clear plan that includes benchmarks for success and progress, so that our troops can be responsibly redeployed elsewhere in the region to fight and win the war on terror. America's Generals, the Iraqi government, and the American people all agree that it is time to change course in Iraq and begin the phased redeployment of U.S. troops to regions where they may be needed. Democrats will continue to fight for a real plan for success in Iraq that respects our troops, our people and our generals."
