Voting Rights Act: Bi-Lingual Ballots Upheld
Posted by on June 29, 2006 at 10:47 AM
Although the GOP continues to block the Voting Rights Act from being reauthorized, they did allow an amendment that would eliminate funding for language provisions to be considered. It failed:
The House of Representatives agreed to affirm the right of voters in areas with large populations of non-English-speaking citizens to cast ballots in their native language.
The 254-167 roll call Wednesday in support of bilingual balloting came just a week after Republican divisions over the issue contributed to the postponement of a House vote to renew the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act.
Leader Pelosi on the Amendment:
Any diminishing of language assistance is a diminishment of our American democracy. The right to vote must never, ever be compromised. Every vote counts – every vote must be counted.

The regressive republicans are FAILURES!
Historians will look back on this administration and GOP led congress and senate and will ask, "What were the American people thinking?" Instead of progressing the human race in the new century, America has elected a group of backward thinking officials. Instead of electing the most enlightened, we have elected the most regressive and uneducated. Woe on America if this is not changed in the 2006 mid-term elections.

Well put
I wish I could say I was proud of Nancy Pelosi, my Congressional representative. In a reply to an email sent on my behalf demanding the closure of the Guantanamo prison camp, Pelosi spoke of the necessary evil of detaining people without prosecution.
Today the Supreme Court slapped Bush - and those who support his policy of unlawful detainment - across the face.
I'm glad to hear that Pelosi is in support of voting rights. Now it would be nice if she took action to either prosecute or release the prisoners of war in Cuba.
If you are bilangual, I know where you can get a job. Go talk to these groups to change their mind to vote Democratic. If we Democrats win we will put your name in the local paper.
Patrick, you are an enemy to Democrats? Have you never learned to take a grievance to the person you see fault in, instead of airing it public that may change other mind to vote against Democrats? When people read your statement they will think you are a fool. Or living a lie.

Great, another one telling folks to shut up and keep on keeping on.
So because of his frustrations you equate that as an enemy to Democrats?
Following that logic, freeforall, we also should only address our grievances against the Bush Administration to them directly. You also sound like Bush himself when he carps about the "leaks" to the press regarding wire tapping and bank account spying. Hush! If you complain too loudly the enemy will hear.
Just keep it to yourself and be a good drone!
I can't be a blind follower and no one should. Democrats are just like any other politician. They don't take action until they feel pressure to do so. If we don't pressue them to act appropriately, they will support the president.
Sometimes it means voting for a 3rd party candidate that does have positions that I agree with. If Democrats believe they can count on my vote no matter what they say/do, then they never feel heat. Once they notice more people voting for a 3rd party that is willing to take risks and take unpoplar positions on issues, they will find they must choose to consider heading away from right wing choices or end up being an irrelevant alternative to the party in power.
That is nonesence, we bash the opposition, we promote the Democrats. We take our grievence to our Democrats in private and shout to the rooftops any grievence on the other side. How long have you played this political game?
good for Pelosi. the Repubs don't want everyone to vote, they are not for democracy.
I posted this on another thread but thought it should go over here as well. It was a response to some "English Only" commentary for the VRA Hault....I just hope I posted it in time to catch any fellow Latinos and new Dems seeking out info on the Party as the thread was listed in the "Hispanics" portion of the website.
Senor/a Patriotic-
Pregunta? Why are English-only speakers so afraid of other languages? Being multi-lingual is a good thing, for many different reasons. Besides the fact that we are living in a global economcy and speaking more than just English makes you extremely versatile professionally, and that increasing your knowledge base is always better than...well, not. Democrats who are afraid of embracing not only the culture of other minority communities, but our languages as well, risk alienating the very voters who may serve to push the Party into a majority. Latinos played a key role in the 2004 election, and right now, Republicans and El Jefe Tonto (that's Cheif Idiot for you english-only kids) are screwing us (not since my senior prom have I seen anyone try so hard...).
The Democratic Party has an opportunity to reach out to people like my extended family, who have been in the same part of Texas since it was Mexico (and wouldn't things be different if WE had been so concerned about Immigration back then...); and who don't read and write very well in English, despite being citizens by birth. (Its offensive that one would assume that speaking another language and being a citizen are mutually exclusive). And even better...they vote. So wouldn't it be swell if Democrats made it easier for them to give the Party the wins they really, really need? So for their sake, and for the sake of Democratic victories- stop with the English-only stuff. Thanks.
PS- To the DNC bloggers: I heart you. I'm 25, just out of law school (studying for the bar), and looking to make a difference through voting rights work, on behalf of Latinos AND the Democratic Party. It hasn't been easy, I didn't have the resources that some of my peers had, but whenever I felt like I might be better off just working towards my own self-interest- I need only read your posts, and I got all the reminders I could ever need.
