Thanks to Think Progress for their posting about the Middle East Crisis. IT IS GROWING!!!

Israel's Security Cabinet approved early Tuesday widening the ground offensive in Lebanon and rejected a cease-fire until an international force is in place, a participant in the meeting said.

Airstrikes in Lebanon would resume "in full force" after the 48-hour suspension expires in another day, said the participant, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters. He said there was no deadline for the offensive, though the United Nations Security Council is expected to debate a resolution this week about a cease-fire.

For those who find prayer helpful,

Let us pray for peace.

We thank You, O Lord, for destroying the dividing wall of enmity and granting peace to those who seek Your mercy.

We pray, O Lord, for all those who suffer from acts of war.

We pray for your peace and your mercy in the midst of the great suffering that people are now inflicting on each other.

Grant us Your Peace.

Amen

Tracy, i did my reading. Now, i will respond. I disagree with the conclusion:

The Senate has one week before its summer recess. As the senators struggle to produce decent legislation from the House’s sham bills, Americans will see the truth: their representatives in the House went on vacation without doing their job.

They did their job well. They work for the lobbyists and the K-Street corporatists. They can hoist their flabby white butts on fancy chairs in those fancy restaurants with that "Mission Accomplished" gleam in their greedy, beady little eyes. They have represented their bosses well, and did what they were paid to do. We the people don't have enough money to interest them with the special interest funding.

Can we blame them? The poor congressmen (oh yeah...and women hahahaha) have to raise money to win reelection every two years. It's much easier to get behind some social issues that will set back policy a good fifty years than actually take a risk and approach a real problem that requires unpopular decisions. What would Jerry say? and Pat, and Ken and all those big-box buying votes for Jeeezusa?

Little Elian could be the next defacto "Presidente for life" if he plays his cards right.

Castro's kid brother ain't exactly a Spring chicken, and the Revolution was EXACTLY about a 'Ruling Class" elite handful of people who were making money on the backs of the general population.

i hate polls but rasmussen has this:

Missouri Senate: McCaskill Moves Ahead
Challenger Breaks Tie With Incumbent Talent

July 31, 2006

Missouri State Auditor Claire McCaskillMissouri State Auditor Claire McCaskill (D) has moved ahead of Senator Jim Talent (R) in the latest Rasmussen Reports election survey to lead the incumbent 45% to 42% (see crosstabs). The candidates were tied at 42% in our survey last month.

While a 3-point lead for the challenger is well within the survey’s margin of sampling error, it is a concern for any incumbent to be so far below the 50% level of support at this point in the campaign. Four other Republican incumbents are in similar or even more difficult circumstances (Santorum in Pennsylvania, Burns in Montana, Chafee in Rhode Island, and DeWine in Ohio).

Frist and his wife are the sole trustees in charge of a family foundation bearing the senator's name, according to Internal Revenue Service forms. However, he has not been listing that position on his Senate disclosure forms, which are made public every year.
25
Kristen on July 31, 2006 at 11:07 PM

gregg, remember that Rasmussen is consistently giving George W 10 points higher tham ANY other poll.

If a Dem is beating a Pug in a Rasmussen poll (although statistically tied due to MoE) that means that the Dem is actually doing better than the MoE, and the Pug base is being notified.

Rasmusen polls are in the business of telling us what the Diebold machines will do.

DO NOT TRUST Rasmussen. Even when they have W at ZERO percent, they are LIARS due to their methedology.

Why are they consistently pro Pug? Zogby, Harris, Gallup, etc. never jibe with Rasmussen, yet at the end of the day, people still quote them.

HERE'S the Google search page for the Rasmussen polls on that race

It changes every day, but stays in the MoE so they can still get the big bucks.

WHEN the Dems take over I'm sure that they will tailor their results to "happify" the ones who are paying the rent at that time.

Houston??

I hope he gets the BEST medical care, and if I was President, I'd go on TV and say that, even to the point of offering US help and Diplomatic Immunity. Bring him here to the Mayo Clinic, and do ALL work possible to keep him alive.

The strategic and Diplomatic ramifications that WILL happen if Castro dies are mind boggling. Plus we actually look like the good guys this time. (As opposed to that whole Standard Oil wants to keep the Shah around thing.....)

Tracy,

I, personally, believe that the congressional desire to make the increase in minimum wage a wedge issue will blow up in the republican's feces [sorry, I mean faces].
Democrats will be able to return to their constituents with a first hand fresh perspective of whom this current republican congress represents.
In five short weeks, democrats will be able sense the victory of regaining control of both houses of congress.
I really sense that this power play by the republican congress was ill-conceived with the current ire of public opinion towards this congress and administration. However, that is good news for democrats.

Good evening, all.

Tweety was taping today in Rockefellow Plaza with a bunch of American and foreign tourists. He asked the crowd to clap if they were happy with the way things are going...especially with what Congress has done. There was a dead silence. He then asked them about Iraqi. I thought someone was going to shoot him...especially the Lebanonese guy.

My conservative brother said tonight that "we have to quit worrying about the rest of the world and start fixing things in this country." This is the same man who read the riot act to me four years ago about how we had to take over the Middle East and convert them to democracy...it was the only way to stop the terrorists.

Funny how four five years of Bush and his Do Nothing, corrupt Republican Congress can change one's mind...that and living four days without electricity with the temp at 100 plus and the electric grid over 150 years old.

Wait till he gets his electric bill. Not to mention fills up his gas tank or sees how much his mother-in-law's hospital bill will run them.

He wants to throw all the bums out and "put in someone who cares about us" (the middle class, I assume).

The natives are getting restless.

"Diebold has made the testing and certification process practically irrelevant," said the Foundation's President Alan Descert, in a statement obtained by RAW STORY. "If you have access to these machines and you want to rig an election, anything is possible with the Diebold TS -- and it could be done without leaving a trace. All you need is a screwdriver," he continued.

The poison pill. Attempting to wrap two much needed pieces of legislation around another tax concession to the ultra elite.

1. Every think tank in AmeRica has voiced an opinion of the potential for voter backlash if this congress uses "the pill."

Tracy,

I think the sad reality is that the republican controlled Congress and their sham legislation is a given to the politically proactive and informed voter. Let's face it, the republican culture of corruption (especially in Congress) is old news.

The real test of whether the Democrats can win is the uninformed voters.

republican loyalists will vote the party-line no matter what...

...republican loyalists will cut the nose off of America to spite the liberals.

The only constituents left are the uninformed voters and whether they inherantly believe anything that is going on in Congress will amount to anything redeemable in value.

I don't know.

But who turns out is the key. The uninformed may not even bother.

As far as Congress is concerned, I believe there are a lot of uninformed voters who are more than pessimistic to believe (whomever they vote for Democrat or republican or Independent) that Congress will always be corrupted by greedy self-serving politicians with their complicatedly worded legislation that only creates the illusion that something is being done.

If the Democrats take back Congress (and there are still 98 days before we find out) what the Democrats do from there will be the biggest test of all for the Democrats.

I hope that the Democrats take back Congress.

But I hope even more, that if they do, the Democrats do what needs to be done to get America back on track.

Riverbend wrotes about the Qana Massacre...

Although the sun is blinding this time of year in our part of the world, the Middle East is seeing some of its darkest days…

I woke up this morning to scenes of carnage and destruction on the television and for the briefest of moments, I thought it was footage of Iraq. It took me a few seconds to realize it was actually Qana in Lebanon. The latest village to see Israeli air strikes. The images were beyond gruesome- body parts and corpses being hauled out from under tons of debris. Wailing relatives and friends, searching for loved ones… So far, according to humanitarian organizations, 34 were children. They killed them while they were sleeping inside their bomb shelters- much like the Amriya Shelter massacre in 1991.

We saw the corpses of the children on television, lifeless and twisted grotesquely, what remained of their faces frozen in expressions of pain and shock. I just sat there and cried in front of the television. I didn’t know I could still feel that sort of sorrow towards what has become a daily reality for Iraqis. It’s not Iraq but it might as well be: It’s civilians under lethal attack; it’s a country fighting occupation.

There's more at her site and thanks to Jen for posting it.

Rabbi Michael Lerner is saying that Israel is wrong for going to war.

And Dennis Prager is a talk show host who proclaims he is an expert on Jews saying that Israel isn't doing enough.

And I can't help but think this Dennis Prager is a classic instigator.

Rabbi Michael Lerner is debating for diplomacy and peace and Dennis Prager some republican looking idiot is saying that there should be more bloodshed.

What is going on here? You'd think a Rabbi wouldn't need to defend his views about Israel to a war-happy talk show host who thinks that Israel will only establish peace through military means.

WHAT A CROCK!

First Mel Gibson let's out anti-Semitic drunken freudian slip colors out. And now a Rabbi is being lectured by a talk show host on Larry King about the virtues of war.

Prager used to have a TV show back when they were giving air time to any asswipe who agreed with the decimation of the Fairness Doctrine.

Prager was on TV at about the same time OxyContin Boy had a "Show", and Prager actually, though obviously Pug, seemed to have at least read a newspaper, and kinda knew what his talking points were.

Now that he's relegated to nuttin' but radio he can spout anything he wants to the sheep who have a memory span of 2 seconds, like a goldfish.

If I remember correctly, Prager is actually an ordained Minister. I may be wrong on that point, but I actually used to watch his TV show at 3 in the Morning, (right before Flush), and he did a LOT of "religion and the World" kind of programs.

Domingo lives in California, and could possibly add more info on this guy, but when it comes to right wing nut jobs, Prager is far far down the list of flame throwers.

He's STILL an uninformed / misinformed idiot, though.

She was ALSO the Chair of the Illinois Pug Party who imported Alan Keyes to come here because Jack Ryan (The "morals" guy) got a little press flack due to his propensity for frequenting Sado-Masochism bars and trying to force his wife into having public and group sex.

Judy's Keyes experiment was designed to get the Southern Bible thumpers on board, except she forgot that ALAN KEYES IS BLACK, and didn't even live in Illinois.

The first (loud) voice for common sense in congress.

"The sickening slaughter on both sides must end and it must end now," Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel said. "President Bush must call for an immediate cease-fire. This madness must stop."

"How do we realistically believe that a continuation of the systematic destruction of an American friend -- the country and people of Lebanon -- is going to enhance America's image and give us the trust and credibility to lead a lasting and sustained peace effort in the Middle East?" asked Hagel, the No. 2 Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

No one believes that, Chuck. It's just that most people we elected to congress are too chicken shit to speak up.

Thank you for doing so.

Dear Joe Liebermann,

Passing out pamphlets to the Black American churches "warning" them that your opponent is "pandering" to them in order to get their votes, is, well, pandering in and of itself. The OT of the Bible and your Torah warnes about people who are first to plead their own cause. They are the ones who are usually guilty.

Hypocrites like you underetimate us all the time at your own political expense as you will see when you lose this year.Black Church Folk are different than Republican Church Folk. They don't just get preached to,they read the "thang for DEMselves."

Sincerly,

FreedomOfSpeechForProgressiveMajority on August 1, 2006 at 02:37 AM

This one is for, Sally.

So many superrich Americans evade taxes using offshore accounts that law enforcement cannot control the growing misconduct, according to a Senate report that provides the most detailed look ever at high-level tax schemes.

Cheating now equals about 7 cents out of each dollar paid by honest taxpayers, as much as $70 billion a year, the report estimated.

So much for law and order. With a wink and a nod and underfunding the IRS (cause taxes are EVIL) we've liberated the president's base from the law and if they don't want to pay taxes, well by God they don't need to anymore.

What do you think, Sally - do all these people with offshore accounts vote Republican or Democrat? Let me guess - those folks are all part of the "liberal elite" aren't they?

This will all trickle down to us someday I'm sure - especially when the inheritance tax is done away with.

It's like the golden calf is alive and if you speak out against it's brothren the hoof will fall upon your a$$!! I mean it is just amazing, I think.
What Israel has been doing, with US backing, for forty years is totally unacceptable. They are as much responsible for the current grief in the area today as the Arab states. It always takes two sides for a fight, no matter how big the fight is, or isn't.

David - In my humble opinion,

the occupation of Arab lands by Israel is one of the drivers of unrest in the Middle East. It is not in Israel's longterm interest that's for sure and we have probably been too tolerant of that policy.

For my part, I'm concerned that Israel's knee jerk response to Hezbolloh is going to escalate to the point that the Israel's existence will be placed in doubt

That may seem far fetched right now, but just wait. The U.S. will fight along side Israel if it comes to that

but the best thing for all is that U.S. return to the position where we are viewed as someone who has the best interests in mind of everyone in the region and not just Israel.

Posted by Kristen on July 31, 2006 at 10:17 AM Paul, Bruno's post was excellent.

As far as Israel's response to Hezbolloh goes for the killing and capture of its soldiers, I stand with Paul on this. And you all should too and I hope that you are all reading my posts because what Israel is doing is ABSOLUTELY not in her best interests nor ours.

If you are a friend of Israel, you best step outside the rhetoric and spin of the Bush administration because this is escalating to the point that Israel is going to be severely hurt.

As far as anyone or the other as taken offense to one thing or the other, well, you all know just as well as I what good that sort of thing does ...

dorsano on August 1, 2006 at 03:50 AM

Posted by Esmeralda on July 31, 2006 at 10:23 AM Is not most of Bruno's post his opinion? I agree with his assessment of the "situation". Not as directed to you and Willie D, but generally speaking.

Here is a better assessment of the situation.

Why is Chuck Hegel (R) the first one to first speak out against the absurdity of what Israel is doing?

Because he intends to run for president? Probably - but why speak out and challenge the Bushmeister? Because the Bushmeister is not liked and he wants to distant himself? But why distance himself on this issue and - gasp!!! - be soft on terrorism?

Why speak out against the most intimidating administration this country has seen in a long time?

Why isn't a Democrat speaking out?

What is there that Chuck Hegel said in that speech that anyone on this blog disagrees with?

Sorry, Jacque - I don't mean to rant -

But you tell me - why is the Democratic party not first and not leading on the right side of this issue?

Is it genetic?

ADL Says Mel Gibson's Anti-Semitic Tirade Reveals His True Self; Actor's Apology 'Not Good Enough'

New York, NY, July 30, 2006 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said actor and director Mel Gibson's apology for hurling anti-Semitic invective at a police officer during his arrest for driving under the influence was "unremorseful and insufficient" and said his tirade "finally reveals his true self."

According to reports, Mr. Gibson yelled epithets at the arresting officer, asked him if he was Jewish and stated that "the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."

In a statement yesterday, Mr. Gibson apologized for saying "despicable things" that he "does not believe to be true."

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

Mel Gibson's apology is unremorseful and insufficient. It's not a proper apology because it does not go to the essence of his bigotry and his anti-Semitism.

His tirade finally reveals his true self and shows that his protestations during the debate over his film "The Passion of the Christ," that he is such a tolerant, loving person, were a sham. It may well be that the bigotry has been passed from the father to the son. It is unfortunate that it took an excess of booze and an encounter with a police officer to reveal what was really in his heart and mind.

We would hope that Hollywood now would realize the bigot in their midst and that they will distance themselves from this anti-Semite

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

this mel gibson thing is good for out culture. we get to see the real underbelly of mel's belief system and strip away all the religious mealy mouthing about jesus's suffering and so on...we get down to the real nitty gritty about hate. mel was brought up to hate jews, plain and simple and he stayed with that hate. perhaps to honor his father ( often another fools journey thru life ) perhaps he had come to believe, like steve mcqueen in soldier in the rain, that jews are devils with little horns....but for whatever reason he truely hates jews. and so he made a movie that combined his theatrical and i suspect real life fascination with torture and his disgust with those holocaust hyping nasty little jews. and then he smiled and acted funny for us and swore he loved all people and watched as his venom ran thru our culture like wine thru cheese cloth. oh and rush and o'reily and pat robertson and the rest of the haters cheered him on and were gleeful that his "project" did so well. they burped a bit as the radical muslim clerics cheered with them but no matter the message of hate was smeared with lipstick and the pig was at the party to celebrate intolerance.

but now we must forgive poor mel with his drinking problem and his po wife and kids back in down under....we must move on becaue there are other people to hate and to curse and to hold accountable for our crimes.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The ABC television network has pulled a miniseries about the Holocaust it was developing with Mel Gibson's production company, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, quoting an unidentified representative for the network...

WTC rescuers suffered 12 years' worth of lung loss
Posted 7/31/2006 10:26 PM ET

By Liz Szabo, USA TODAY
Working amid the rubble of the World Trade Center may have aged the lungs of firefighters and rescue workers by an average of 12 years, a new study shows.
"It's pretty shocking," says John Balmes, a professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco who reviewed the research, published today in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, but was not involved in writing it. "They got 12 years' worth of loss in one year."

Doctors have closely monitored the health of workers exposed to dust from the towers' collapse.

In the study, doctors report the results of periodic lung function tests that were given to about 12,000 New York City Fire Department rescue workers from 1997 to 2002, says Gisela Banauch, an author of the paper.

Election lawyer to file legal contest in California congressional race

“Overall, this election was handled in such a way that we have no reason for confidence in the results,” famed election attorney Paul Lehto said of California’s 50th Congressional District special election between Francine Busby and Brian Bilbray.

The San Diego case will ask for a full recount performed by hand to detect counting errors and scanning errors, including mistabulations and ballots found uncounted. “That happened in Washington State in the 2004 governor’s race,” Lehto said, noting that a hand count overturned the machine results, giving victory to Democrat Christine Gregoire by around 100 votes. (More recently, hand counts in Pottawattamie, Iowa, overturned seven races – including Republican primaries.)
