Philip D. Murphy, National Finance Chair
Mr. Murphy was, until recently, a senior director of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1982 as a summer associate and worked over the next 20-plus years in the U.S., Europe and Asia. In his career, Mr. Murphy led a number of global businesses and managed thousands of professionals. Among his positions were: Head of the German Region, President of Goldman Sachs Asia and global Co-Head of the Investment Management Division (the private wealth and asset management businesses). He served on the firm’s Management Committee.
During his career, Mr. Murphy developed some of Goldman Sachs’ most important global client relationships and helped set and execute the strategy in a variety of businesses. He hired and mentored scores of professionals and chaired a series of firmwide task forces and committees. He was also a sponsor of the Goldman Sachs Women’s Network and received the 2003 Business Leader of the Year award from the American Woman’s Economic Development Corporation.
Mr. Murphy serves currently in the following organizations:
- Local Initiatives Support Corporation Executive Committee Chairman;
- NAACP Special Contribution Fund Board of Trustees;
- Center for American Progress Board of Trustees;
- 180 Turning Lives Around Board President;
- U.S. Soccer Foundation Board of Directors;
- University of Pennsylvania’s Huntsman Program Advisory Board.
Mr. Murphy served formerly in the following capacities:
- Co-chaired “Renewing Our Schools, Securing Our Future: A Task Force on Public Education for the 21st Century” with Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and Professor Roger Wilkins of George Mason University;
- Chaired the “Benefits Review Task Force” focused on public sector employee benefits by appointment of New Jersey Governor, Richard Codey;
- NAACP President/CEO Search Committee;
- The Goldman Sachs Foundation Board of Trustees;
- Investment Company Institute Board of Governors;
- Prosperity New Jersey Board of Trustee;
- The Wharton School’s Graduate Executive and Asian Advisory Boards.
Born in 1957, Mr. Murphy is a native of the Boston area and is a graduate of Harvard College (A.B., Economics, 1979) and The Wharton School (M.B.A., 1983). He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Tammy, daughter, Emma and sons, Josh, Charlie and Sam.
