Election Day 2006: Plan Ahead!

Posted by on August 7, 2006 at 03:32 PM

In this morning's open thread I wrote that today's Action Item on 100actions.com was really important. It is. I wanted to expand.

Take a Vacation Day

Start planning for Election Day by taking November 7th off work. You can't help get out the vote if you have other obligations, so take a minute to clear your schedule early.

Election Day is November 7, 2006.

That is just 92 short days away. It's a Tuesday. If you have the time and can manage it, plan to take off Monday, November 6th too. I promise you your local campaign will love you. Too often some of the best volunteers end up being unavailable on Election Day, which will break a field person's heart. So start planning to be available now.

Example:

Last November, during the Virginia Election, one of my best volunteers, a precinct captain, didn't remember that she had scheduled a doctor's appointment on Election Day until she got the reminder call from a nurse the Friday before Election Day. She'd made the appointment a year in advance.

So please, check your calendar now and, if you are can manage it, plan to take that day off and volunteer for your local Democratic campaign. When it gets to crunch time, the advertisements are bought, the direct mail has been sent, the real difference in made by the person-to-person contacts that are made on Election Day.

Election Day needs are many are varied, beginning as early as 5 a.m. with a morning lit drop (leaving a reminder to vote on their doorknob so you see it as you leave for work in the morning) to a late night stint at the Board of Elections while the votes are counted.

In between we need volunteers on the phones, at the doors, at the polls, at busy intersections with signs and smiles, on the road driving voters to and from the polls, running between precincts delivering "care packages" to fellow volunteers, etc...

If you are able to work on Election Day there is a job that will need to be done.

So, if you want to score that gold star early in the campaign season, call up your local field office today and confirm to your field director that you will work all-day on Election Day.

While you are planning to take the day off....(clearing throat)

MoveOn.org is doing on-line phone banking for Ned Lamont.

Can you offer an hour, 2 hours??

Here is my tip!! FIrst we have to get our party back from the DLC!!!

Do every little thing you can to take our party back first by booting people backed by the DLC from office. The DLC has done everything it can to cow to republicans and destroy the Democratic party. Helping defeat Lieberman by a great margin would send these power brokers a big message.

By the way, what is up with the coverage in the NY Times and Washington Post--it seems they are actually campagning for Lieberman. I guess the establishment can't handle the threat of a return to democratic values. Down with the establishment!

Howard Dean is doing a great job to reconstruct the party--KEEP IT UP HOWARD!!!

BTW, why isn't there anything on here about Leiberman's slap in the Democrat party's face by not accepting the will of the people who told him to get lost in the primary?
This guy was supported by the Democrat Loosership Comittee, and is now basically saying he's going to run as an independent spoiler to grab votes away from Lamont, and so aid the Republican candidate.
Worse yet, you have a Republi-lite sell-out, Ken Salazar coming out saying that he's going to support his "good buddy" Lieberman.
Why isn't he showing that concern for the people, or the Democrat party.
It shows you what these guys' true loyalty is and it's not either the Democrat party or their constituents.
Actions speak a hell of a lot louder than words.

There will be voter fraud committed Sunday in Nueces County when Precint Chairs of Precint 125 and 78 vote for who will be the Democrat nomination for District 33 State Representative, even though no one in their precinct can vote for the District 33 State Representative. This has been endorsed by our State Chairman Boyd Richie. The state party will be sued. The FBI will be called to investigate election fraud. I just hope SDEC will impeach Boyd before he taken to jail. This is tarnishing all Democrats here in Corpus Christi. Precinct Chairs cannot represent people in 2 Districts. Even if it allows you to vote for your brother. This makes it even harder to get people to the polls this November. People always say it doesn't matter because all political parties are corrupt. We can't point fingers when we should be looking in the mirror. This scandal will affect all political races here in Corpus Christi. We have lost the people's trust as a party. It's a shame it will have a bad impact on all Democrats running for office here. How could our State Chairman be so stupid to hand an election to the Republicans this November. The State Attorney has already said precincts must be in only one district. Boyd interprets this to mean go ahead and vote in two districts. Boyd Richie is encouraging two people to commit voter fraud. I guess he's promised to bail them out of jail. We are starting this election off all wrong.
