I am very happy to see DNC is working on its Quick Reaction force. But we need an Instant Response team. The rebuttals against Rumsfeld by Massa and Walz yesterday were excellent and courageous, and the press work adequately placed the story in WaPo yesterday. Senator Jack Reed also managed to get a rebuttal against Rumsfeld into a WaPo item yesterday.

But "a day after" is not "Instant Response." We urgently need _same day_ rebuttals. The AP dispatch that originally aired Rumsfeld's garbage was posted on NYT's website at 12:25 pm with absolutely _zero_ response by any Democrat.

The AP's regurgitation of Rumsfeld's libels was allowed to stand for half of the news cycle. That was unacceptable. DNC must demand that AP contact DNC _before_ running a wire story parroting McCarthyite slanders and lies. We must go into Instant Response mode now to crush these liars and throw their GOP enablers out of Congress.

If DNC had to wait a full news cycle to rebut Rumsfeld, then DNC should have come up with something close to this piece by Peter Galbraith in the Boston Globe -- or maybe we did (wink)?

We do need an Instant Response team, which should be easy to do with the internet. Maybe someone could volunteer to contact Dean's office as soon there is a statement such as are being spewed now on a regular basis by Bush (didn't he say he wasn't going to attack anyone?????), Cheney, Rummy. Does Condi do this stuff? I can't recall. She can get in a subdued zinger occasionally but I think she is smart enough not to get into a dog fight -- but she's not smart enough to know who she's fighting for, so I guess her "press releases" should be monitored also. Where's Rove in all this? No doubt slithering around in people's pockets.

I think it's obvious that the RNC is in full campaign mode, not waiting for Labor Day. If so, RNC almost certainly has a war room and several instant response teams. That's what RNC can do when it has $40 million in the bank while DNC has only $11 million in the bank.

But I did not suggest that DNC is doing _nothing_ or that we do not have response teams watching every single move & utterance by the GOP. I'm sure DNC does have response teams, we are doing plenty, it's just one news cycle late. We need to ratchet up our pace.

I hope I don't sound like a broken record, but I wanted to emphasize again how important it is that DNC continue to denounce Joe Lieberman. The linked piece in the Washington Post shows that Lieberman is starting to realize he may not be welcomed back in the Democratic caucus next week when the Senate reconvenes.

Please, please tell the DSCC chair Chuck Schumer that it is time to end all ambiguity where Lieberman is concerned. Schumer must tell major donors to withdraw support from Lieberman or risk losing appointed party positions and be excluded from participation on party finance committees.

It was not enough for Schumer to tell the Hartford Courant that DSCC is supporting Lamont without also making public demands on all Democrat donors to stop giving aid & comfort to Lieberman. Lieberman is our opponent, not our friend: Lieberman campaigns with Republicans in Connecticut; Lieberman will hold a fundraiser in Connecticut early next month for Republican supporters; Lieberman repeats the same McCarthyite slanders against Ned Lamont and other Democratic candidates that Cheney & Rumsfeld are using. DNC must draw the line now and order DSCC to ensure Lieberman gets no further support from Democratic donors.

Joe Lieberman IS NOT the problem. He presumably doesn't want to be identified with the popular Republican "cut and run" label; WHATEVER. That's not our biggest concern. Neither Joe nor Lamont favor Bush policies and tact on many issues, and both want a successful and prideful exit from Iraq. Good luck to whomever CT voters choose (of these two). It's Iraq, it's fraudulent intervention, failed preparation and execution. Failure to anticipate and respond to changes in enemy tactics. Our own deaths at 2,400, 15,000 injured and 41,000 Iraqui deaths, Iran's gaining a foothold in Iraq through its surrogates, etc. It's also about Republican attacks on honest dissent, and influencing voters through spin control and photo ops. Forget about Joe Lieberman, once our VP candidate, and let's not disintegrate into this dribble of an argument, there are much larger challenges to conquer!!
