Harold Ford's Rising Star Heads Toward the Senate

As the son of former Congressman Harold Ford, Senatorial candidate Harold Ford Jr. has had some high expectations to live up to. And he's certainly done his part. Ford attended the University of Pennsylvania, and in his last semester at the University of Michigan Law School, he arranged his schedule so he would not have Monday or Friday classes...to have time to run for Congress. Since his '96 election, Ford has been re-elected four times by an average of 80% of the vote and enjoys a reputation as a consensus builder.

Recognized early on as a rising star, Ford was the keynote speaker for the 2000 Democratic National Convention. A member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Ford is a also a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate and fiscally conservative Democrats, and co-chairs the Community Solutions and Initiatives Caucus, a bipartisan group of lawmakers that seeks to help faith and community based groups solve social challenges.

As an African American and a southerner, I hope that Harold Ford Jr. does make it into the U.S. Senate.

They say that the south has not sent a black person to the U.S. Senate since Reconstruction, well, times, they are a changing, and I think that it is about time that Democratic African Americans start to take their place as members of the U.S. Congress.

I also think that we need more black mayors, governors, state senators, state representatives, county council members, sheriffs and policemen/women.

I also think that black members of every one of the 11 southern states should make sure that they are electing black people to these positions. I am not saying that they should only elect black people, but I think that they should sometimes.

I think Ford should be elected because he bests represents the interests of Tennessee. Corker will just be another vote for Bush and the status quo. Corker has so much money and so little taste that he is even mimicking Bush with his western jeans and boots in his tv ads which come on every two minutes because of the magnitude of his wealth from his deals in Chattanooga where he was mayor. If you want to hear another drawling voice saying "I'm 100% for the right to life"...whatever that means...then vote for your single-issue candidate. But if you want someone who we can be proud of to send to the Senate and who will give us input on the issues that are important to Tennesseans then vote for Harold Ford, Jr.
By the way, Tennesseans come in all colors, and few of us care what color Ford is, but when he begins to speak you know immediately that he is a Tennessean. He will remember us first before corporations and special interests, and he will serve us well. Lets put in someone who can bring unity to the Senate and stop the divisive practices of the previous gop member.
