A Resolution Honoring the Life and Career of Lloyd Bentsen
WHEREAS, in his long career in public office, Lloyd Bentsen was involved in some of the most important legislative battles of the second half of the 20th century; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from the University of Texas School of Law in 1942, Mr. Bentsen served in the United States Army Air Forces from 1942 until 1945; and
WHEREAS, after the war, he returned to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1948, where he served for three terms before returning to Texas to begin what was to become a prosperous career in business; and
WHEREAS, after 16 years in the financial sector of Houston, Mr. Bentsen returned to the political arena, defeating George H. W. Bush for a seat in the U.S. Senate; and
WHEREAS, in 1972, he was appointed to the powerful Senate Finance Committee and in 1987 he was named Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee; and
WHEREAS, in 1988 Presidential nominee Michael Dukakis chose Mr. Bentsen to be his Vice Presidential running mate; and
WHEREAS, in January 1993, Mr. Bentsen resigned from the Senate after being named Secretary of the Treasury by President Bill Clinton; and
WHEREAS, he served as Secretary of the Treasury until December 1994 and in 1999 President Clinton awarded Mr. Bentsen the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Bentsen died on May 26, 2006, at age 85, and in his eulogy at Mr. Bentsen’s funeral, President Clinton noted the former senator’s obsessive dedication to his country;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) honor Lloyd Bentsen for his dedication and service to his country; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the DNC extend its condolences to B.A. Bentsen, their three children and their grandchildren.
